NATURAL FOLLOWING OF THE GROWTH IN THE ARTS. This winter, The Stranger, one of Seattle’s most popular alternative newspapers, had a cover story suggesting “Bellevue could be the new Williamsburg.” For those unaware of Williamsburg, it’s Brooklyn’s trendiest neighborhood, buzzing with hip restaurants and chic boutiques that attract fashionable artists and business professionals alike. And while Bellevue is not quite there, with the coming of the Spring District, the light rail and all the new development, it’s only a matter of time until a new vibe sets in. What’s often overlooked is that our area is already is full of those “Williamsburg” types, and in this month's issue, it was difficult to narrow down who to feature. You’ll read about artists using all different types of mediums—from glass and clay to different types of paints and inks. Our writer Susan George, who is also a full-time musician, tells us some favorite arts-related things to experience around the area including options for foodies, music lovers and theater buffs. Also get to know the owners of Brackish, local furniture makers with a unique eye for design and craftsmanship.

AUTOMATED FINGERPRINT INFORMATION SYSTEM RECOGNIZED BY KING COUNTY COUNCIL On Nov. 5, King County recognized the Automated Fingerprint Information System that for three decades has been assisting law enforcement agencies solve thousands of cases. Responding to crime scenes, taking photographs and fingerprints are just some of the tasks the AFIS staff does to help solve a crime. County Sheriff Mitzi Johananknecht celebrated the AFIS by saying, "30 years of success in helping to solve thousands of cases."

GROWTH FOR BELLEVUE'S OFFICE TOWERS Bellevue's planning department recently received two new tower developments, and if approved, Bellevue would build five new towers within downtown. The first project would be the Bellevue Plaza which would build three towers in three separate places. The second project is the Bellevue Cadillac Plaza and would bring two 15-story office buildings by 2021.

EVER WONDER WHY A WEDDING BAND IS TYPICALLY WORN ON ONE’S LEFT “RING” FINGER? It directly connects a loved one to your heart—literally and figuratively. Beginning with ancient Roman culture, the belief that a vein in the fourth digit known as the Vena Amoris (Vein of Love) directly carries blood back to one’s heart, the symbolism of the ring/marriage and where it is always worn would hold your loved one close forever—till death do you part. But what happens when death does part us? Be an ill-fated parent or a child taken too soon—what then? How do we hold onto them? Some needle ink into their bodies, trusting the pain in their flesh will somehow rid them of part of the laceration they forever carry in their hearts—and maybe, just maybe, that black Kuro Sumi ink might allow the extremely missed soul to live on and walk beside him or her as they continue on. Many others struggle with how to reconnect the phantom limb after the death of a loved one. Maja Arnold traumatically met this burden in the early morning hours in 2007, when her sweet baby girl, Isabella, left this world due to SIDS. Just two years, Isabella’s twin brother, Lucas, was diagnosed with cancer. After two unimaginable tragedies no parent should ever have to endure, Maja, an exquisite artist, set out to find a piece of jewelry to commemorate the loss of her daughter; her son’s battle with cancer; and her third child, Ella. Maja entered the rabbit hole of Googling yet found nothing that was quite right. Instead of getting discouraged, she decided to create something herself: after hours of intricate hand-sketching, a stunning epitaph transformed into a gold necklace she never removes, connecting her three children right to her heart. Her pendant transcends time and death and fills her heart that was once broken and forever cracked with love and a constant reminder of her story—her struggles—but most importantly, her strength. People soon took notice, from other parents at school to the editors at Good Housekeeping. Maja began to share her craft, not only creating a modern emblem for people to hold their dear ones close but also, more importantly, inspiring others with her story and retelling theirs via an organic and always unique creation for her clients to wear.

Craig Wellborn The Language of the Soul For Craig Wellborn, art was never a choice. It was a way of life that seemed to run in his family. From a young age, he recognized it was much more than just a hobby; it was a calling he couldn’t ignore. Five years ago, he began pursuing his art more seriously, all the while continuing his full-time job as a firefighter. He hung his artwork in a few local shows and found that more often than not, someone would inquire about purchasing the piece as soon as it was up.

“Art is the language of the soul.” This saying inspires Craig deeply. Painting is his way of communicating the things that are important and meaningful to him. It helps him find a sense of peace and tranquility. When starting a painting, Craig begins with handmade birch panels from sustainable forests and uses acrylic paint to create texture and sculpture-like paintings. During the creative process, he takes notes as he begins to visualize the piece and then brings those notes to life as he paints. Craig enjoys being able to take risks with his artwork, exploring different methods of creating, instead of taking cues from current trends. One example of taking a risk was his early inclination toward white, minimalist art before it became a trend. Meeting the people through his artwork is another highlight for Craig. Molly Schwartz Shattered Beauty Growing up, Molly Schwartz didn’t have a lot of exposure to art outside of basic childhood coloring books. Art History 101 in college introduced her to the massive world of art—one full of different styles and masters—a fun and magical world. In 2015, she began working with shattered glass, both tempered and annealed, to create sculptural pieces. Something about glass enticed Molly; taking what people typically discarded and transforming it into something beautiful. Nature is Molly’s greatest inspiration—the way water reflects, clouds move and the sun sets. Shattered glass reminds her a lot of the ocean, and it’s reflected in her work. Molly loves how shattered glass can add another level to a painting. It is the way that glass can be sharp, powerful, refracting light in all directions—all while adding texture—that she connects with. Molly begins her process by creating a work sketching out her vision. She paints the glass, then attaches it to wood with resin, sometimes painting the wood itself. Afterward, she determines the breaking point and shatters the glass, then pulls up sections of glass and pours in more paint to create depth. Shattering the glass can be the most unpredictable part of the process; she puts a seatbelt cutter-type tool to the glass and hammers away. Sometimes it can take one hit—or 20! “It’s a love/hate relationship because it’s such an exhausting process. Each piece takes six to eight weeks and hundreds of hours.” Molly’s favorite creation is called “Pacifica.” It was her first time working with annealed glass instead of tempered glass. The hand-cut glass, coupled with the dark green and blue paint, created a lot of movement in the piece, reminding her of the Pacific Ocean. Her pieces are featured at Schoener Home Furnishings

Jolinda Linden The Art of Science Art has been a theme that has flowed through Jolinda Linden’s entire life. From a young age, she attended art camp, creating her very first tile at 5 years old. That tile hangs in her office today. In college, she studied science, not art. She remembers being in class and seeing the diagrams and thinking, “I want to draw the diagrams…who draws the mitochondrion?” Her mother bought her a kiln as a graduation gift, which she brought with her everywhere she moved. When she got married and moved to Vancouver with her husband, she wasn’t able to work for a year and decided to use that time to focus on her artwork. She began working with porcelain on panel in 2008, the medium of choice for her. The medium itself, porcelain, and what it can yield inspires Jolinda in her creativity. After a decade of studying porcelain, her inspiration has expanded to using the medium to interpret infographics in an abstract way. When creating pieces, she employs just a few tools, techniques and temperatures to reign in the raw porcelain. Her approach to art is similar to a Scientific Method: “a method of procedure that has characterized natural

science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement and experiment, and the formulation, testing and a modification of hypotheses.” “I am motivated to see what results I can coax from a block of wet porcelain clay, using a minimal number of tools and then accurately recording my steps, kiln firming times and temperatures.” These methods are the process of art creation for Jolinda. To date, she has 13 methods and creates all of her pieces using them. Jolinda assembles hundreds to thousands of intricate porcelain pieces to create “large yet metamorphic compositions” resembling a two-dimensional sculpture. These methods also allow her to use her studies of science to create her passion: art. Jolinda’s work can be found on Instagram

FOR DESIGNER ANDY WHITCOMB, IT’S ALL ABOUT IMAGINATION AND CONSCIENCE, AND THE JOURNEY TO HIS CURRENT CAREER AS CO-FOUNDER OF LOCAL MADE-BY-HAND FURNITURE STORE BRACKISH HASN’T BEEN A TRADITIONAL ONE. When he was 19 years old, he decided to be a furniture designer, with no experience, training or education. He got a job at a refinishing shop in Ballard refinishing antique furniture to gain some hands-on experience. After several years, he attended Kendall College of Art and Design in Michigan. The four-year program focused on design, and after graduating, he designed mass production items that were produced overseas. In 2007, Andy stopped in New York City on his way home from a work trip to China. He walked into ABC Home and Carpet, an iconic six-story home store in Manhattan, and had a religious awakening. When he reached the floor that featured furniture made of reclaimed materials, he realized there was so much more to design that he wanted to pursue. That was when he decided he would start his own company. That moment shifted his perspective and his entire career. “I realized I couldn’t design stuff anymore that would be in a landfill in three years. I wanted to create something people would appreciate and that I would be proud of. My imagination and conscience have been my main drivers in design and running my business since then.” In 2009, Whitcomb & Co. was born, with Andy handling 100 percent of the design and creation of his custom furniture pieces. He began working with wood. It was the easiest medium to start with, and he had some experience with it from his time refinishing antique furniture. The style of furniture really stemmed from his lack of skill at the time; he would build a metal framework and bolt the wood to it because he didn’t have the knowledge to make strong wood joints. He also realized his passion for the industrial look and the ability to create something from the basis of authenticity. He fell in love with being able to take a work bench that had been used and abused for years and making a beautiful table out of it. During that time, Andy met Forest Eckley, who would come to own Glasswing, a retail design shop. Over a conversation about an idea for a couch that Andy had in mind, Andy and Forest decided to merge their businesses and create Brackish. Many of Brackish’s designs combine wood and steel together, creating a modern industrial aesthetic. One thing that sets Brackish apart is their incorporation of reclaimed and salvaged materials. As a child, Andy grew up in a rural area and loved taking wood he would find around his home and build treehouses. That continues to this day. He loves the idea of scavenging things and making something magical and beautiful out of it.

Today, while Andy is still hands-on in the creative process, he doesn’t make every piece of furniture himself, but he is a part of the entire process until the piece is finished. He most enjoys creating custom pieces because it involves interaction with the client. When he delivers the finished product to the client, and he can hear how excited they are with it, he appreciates that honest moment of enjoyment. 40

His favorite part of his job is the license to be creative. Coming up with creative solutions and objects has always been something Andy enjoys, and he is able to exercise it every day. Alongside that creativity, Andy also credits a quote by Napoleon Hill as the greatest lesson in his life, both personally and professionally: “If you can conceive it and believe it, you can achieve it.” Currently, Andy is working on a project for a high-profile cabin, designed by Tom Kundig, owner and design principal of Seattle-based Olson Kundig. Andy is redesigning some of the interior of the cabin as well as making a custom sofa. It is a dream project for him, being able to work with his professional hero and favorite architect, whose work is so well regarded by the design community. Brackish also owns two homes that are furnished completely with Brackish furniture. Brackish House is in Capitol Hill, and Canyon Creek Cabin is in Granite Falls. Both are available for rent on Airbnb.
