Hands down my favorite thing about the Northwest is the long, warm summer nights. For most of us, summer is packed with family vacations, camps, outdoor activities and hopefully a few lazy days in there just to hang out and enjoy. This issue is extra special to me because I was able to include my family. My dad has been an avid fisher for as long as I can remember. His passion is fly fishing, but he does all kinds, and our family has definitely enjoyed the fruits of his hobby (try to beat his salmon recipe). This issue he shares with us how you too can create memories and plan a quick and easy fishing trip with those you love. Young or old, it’s a great way to bond and spend time outdoors. MEET ANDREW OLDHAM, CHEF DE CUISINE AT ERITAGE "Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.” -Julia Child When asked about his approach to life and cooking, the word that comes up most often is “learning.” As chef de cuisine at Eritage, Andrew Oldham is looking forward to embracing a new challenge by collaborating on the Eritage culinary program with James Beard Award-winning chef Jason Wilson. “I am constantly inspired and driven daily to learn as much as I can. I am a firm believer that we always have more to learn.” Andrew grew up in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from The NOVA Project, an alternative high school focused on a collaborative and student-led curriculum. Food and cooking was an important part of growing up for Andrew. “I have loved cooking for as long as I can remember and have always felt at home in the kitchen. My mother is an avid Julia Child fan and may have prepared everything from her repertoire at least once during my years at home,” he recalls. Andrew was eager to learn all he could in the culinary field and began his career as a dishwasher. An early position at Café Campagne gave him the chance to work with one of his greatest mentors, Daisley Gordon. “Daisley once told me early on to set goals for myself as a chef and keep learning and not become complacent,” he says. Over the span of his 15 years in Seattle restaurants, he continued to learn, advancing in his career as the sous chef at Le Pichet and executive chef at Lecosho. In 2013, Andrew moved to Walla Walla to serve as corporate chef for Waterbrook Winery, where he had the opportunity to develop a food program from the ground up for multiple locations. “It was a wonderful learning opportunity, and I am grateful for the invaluable experience,” he says. In April 2018, Andrew joined the team at Eritage and sees the menu as a reflection of the wonderful community of farmers in the Walla Walla area. “These farmers are our friends and neighbors," he says. "The menu will reflect all of the care taken from the time seeds are planted, to the time it all comes together in a dish. I see the kitchen filled with an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce and meats from local farms being prepared with great care and focus on technique.” He and his wife, Tricia Rose, have been married for almost seven years and have two daughters, Charlotte, 5, and Georgia, 4, as well as two dogs, CONTINUED >

Andrew also enjoys working in his garden, playing the cello and listening to country music. Andrew is enjoying the process of getting Eritage ready to be a wonderful addition to Walla Walla. Try this tart, creamy concoction combined with Jell-O—the food that makes anything a little bit more fun—and hit it out of the park with these after-party treats.

FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set. 2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth. 3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (they’ll need to fit in the popsicle molds). 4. Fill the popsicle molds about halfway with Jell-O cubes, then fill the remaining space with the blended lemonade mixture. 5. Add popsicle sticks if needed and freeze overnight.

A fun and memorable first fishing experience for kids requires lots of smiles, enthusiasm and patience. Trout Unlimited is a great organization that has beginner classes and organized activities for young anglers. You can also find many TU members who are willing to help you figure out how to get started. Want to do a lot on your own? The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife fishing websites cover regulations governing all state fisheries, tutorials, videos and even where to find a good fishing spot nearby.

Getting geared up is the first challenge, and perhaps the most intimidating. The fishing department of the Sportco & Outdoor Emporium in downtown Seattle, for example, can be overwhelming. Here you’ll find gear for virtually every type of fishing. Where to start? Let’s assume for simplicity, that you’re looking to fish for trout in the local lakes and streams from Lake Washington to the west slopes of the Cascades. These sites provide a pretty good list of the basics: SkyAboveUs.com/Fishing. Learning to cast a spinning rod is pretty straightforward. The first experiences are usually on small lakes and ponds for rainbow trout. Watch a YouTube video or two on casting and basic trout fishing. Practice with the kids in the backyard for an hour. Pack your lunch and head out. Fly fishing requires a bit more study. Casting a fly rod is more challenging, and the rod, reel, line and flies (the lures of fly fishers) are quite different. Learning together with your youngsters is a great bonding experience. The best way to start is some lessons. Creekside Angling in Issaquah is a great fly shop and a good place to build your relationship with local fly fishing. They offer classes that introduce all the equipment and basics of casting in a nearby park. CreeksideAngling.com Next, take a guided fly fishing trip. Talk to the gang at Red’s on the Yakima River. They will set you up with an experienced guide for beginners. Spending a day with an expert picking flies, tying knots, casting and getting coaching on the spot really shortens the learning curve. We are rich in accessible fisheries. For short outings with the kids in the early stages, try one of the many juvenile-only fishing holes nearby. The Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River is accessible, beautiful and productive. Rattlesnake Lake is another great option, but it is best fished from some sort of small boat or raft. THE HISTORY OF THIS GORGEOUS SAN JUAN ISLAND BEACH RETREAT READS LIKE A NOVEL. Following the end of World War II, Army veteran Darrell Roberts and his wife, Isabelle, came across a business opportunity in Friday Harbor and decided to relocate to the San Juan Islands. Once there, the Roberts lived in a small apartment until eventually finding their piece of island paradise — a quaint cabin perched on the waterfront of 22 acres, built in the early 1900s just a couple miles south of Friday Harbor. In the ‘60s the Roberts built their permanent residence and became deeply involved in the local community and island life, often hosting out-of-town friends and family, including Isabelle’s sister, Melva, and Melva’s daughter, a young Tere Foster, who would spend much of her summers on the island with her aunt and uncle. Tere’s own daughter, Moya Skillman, also grew up traveling to the island. The two became very close to Darrell and Isabelle, who never had children of their own. Upon Isabelle’s passing in 2005, the property was left to Tere and Moya with the promise that it would stay in the family forever. Intent on keeping that promise, the main house received a much-needed upgrade, making sure to retain and showcase some of the original architectural features that made it unique, including the wooden rafters and fireplace chimney.
