We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. In the last few months, I've really been analyzing my relationship with my kids, how our family operates as a unit and what we love spending our time doing. The way I made this more clear, was to first focus on the things that I don't love spending time on. For our family - it’s screens. For yours, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. But I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail in East Nashville, or going out to find a fun cookie place we've never been to before in a different part of town - like HiFi cookies. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To plan that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make some time to play in the rain! Happy April y'all!

New Artistic Director Named For Nashville Repertory Theatre Micah-Shane Brewer became the fifth artistic director in the 38-year history of the Nashville Repertory Theatre. He was promoted from his producer position that he gained during 2021 at the company. He first worked there as a teaching artist in 2020. He directed the Rep’s first production following the pandemic, the musical Ragtime, followed by three of the most successful shows in Nashville Rep history: Mary Poppins, Rent, and most recently Elf the Musical. A Family Affair TH E H ISTORY AN D LEGACY OF IROQUOIS STEEPLECHASE

As the warm breeze carried the sound of galloping hooves and excited cheers across Percy Warner Park, Marianne Byrd's heart swelled with pride. She had been involved in the Iroquois Steeplechase for as long as she could remember, but now, as the President of the Race Committee, she felt a sense of responsibility to carry on the legacy of this beloved event. The Iroquois Steeplechase has been a fixture in Nashville for generations, but its roots lay in the rolling hills of England. Steeplechase racing had begun as a hobby which was an outgrowth of fox hunters and riders, who would race to the church, navigating over, under, or around barriers in the way. The sport had made its way to the United States, where it quickly gained popularity in several states, including Tennessee. In Nashville, the tradition of steeplechase racing had been born out of a hunting club's desire to recreate the excitement of the Grand National Aintree. In the 1930s, people would bring their picnic baskets and blankets to watch the races, but the Great Depression hit the United States hard, causing many steeplechase racing events to fold. However, in Nashville, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) offered a project to build a new racecourse, and influential members of the community rode in Percy Warner to take advantage of the opportunity. The WPA racecourse was designed by Henry

Dupont, and it gave people in Nashville jobs while preserving Percy Warner Park. The first race was held in 1941, and it continues to this day, with the only exception being World War II and 2020. For Marianne's family, steeplechase racing had become more than just a pastime. Her grandfather, Albert Menefee Jr, had raced in the Steeplechase in the 1940s and 1950s, winning in 1950. Her grandmother was a longtime supporter of steeplechase racing through volunteer work, even welcoming Princess Anne when she came to race in 1987. As she walked through the bustling crowd, Marianne felt a sense of pride and gratitude for her family's involvement in the Iroquois Steeplechase. But for her, the event was about more than just tradition. The races were now held to raise money for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and other organizations, highlighting Nashville's volunteer heritage, beautiful green spaces like Percy Warner Parks, and supporting important charities. Hannah Dudney shared Marianne's passion for the event. She had attended the Iroquois Steeplechase with her family since she was a small child, watching in awe as her grandfather, Albert Menefee Jr, raced in the 1940s and 1950s, winning the race in 1950. Steeplechase had always been a part of their family legacy, and now, as an adult, Hannah cherishes the memories of those childhood outings. CONTINUED >

Hannah’s father was inducted into the Steeplechase Hall of Fame in 2019, shortly after his passing.. “Seeing the legacy that my father created and the lives that he had touched throughout his years of life was such a surreal feeling for me,” Dudney shares. Many of Hannah’s aunts and uncles had also volunteered in planning and serving on the race committee. The Iroquois Steeplechase has evolved over the years, growing in size, quality of horse racing, and philanthropic efforts through partnerships and volunteer work. Today, it is one of the premier steeplechase races in the US, attracting horses from Europe to come and race in Nashville. But despite its growth and success, the event remains rooted in the community and its commitment to supporting important charities, such as the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

For anyone who has never been to the Iroquois Steeplechase, Marianne and Hannah urge them to come and experience the event. Whether you enjoy tailgating in the infield, socializing in one of the tented areas, or watching from your box, there are so many ways to do steeplechase. But they also offer some advice: stay hydrated and arrive early to avoid fighting for parking. The Iroquois Steeplechase is more than just a horse race. It's a celebration of family, community, and philanthropy, all while carrying on a beloved tradition. A rapidly changing section of Music City, East Nashville may be recognized for its "hipster" vibes, ample new restaurants, and quaint aesthetic for those just passing through. But if you look a little further you’ll see something truly special — a neighborhood bonded by uniting time and time again to face tragedy and support each other. East Nashville has many parts to its whole: with Historic Edgefield, Lockeland Springs, East End, and Greater East Nashville (including Highland Heights, Cleveland Park, McFerrin Park and Inglewood).

East Nashville is no stranger to tragedy. The Great Fire of 1916 destroyed over 500 houses and left over 2,500 people homeless. In 1933, a tornado made a rampage through town, tearing through three miles of homes, churches, schools, and stores. And sadly, that wasn’t the end of tornadoes for the neighborhood, as 1998 and 2020 also saw significant damage and loss of life. Needless to say, the neighborhood has bonded and rebuilt despite getting knocked down more than once. There’s so much to explore about the East side of town, let’s start scratching the surface with a few local favorites, old and new.

WHERE TO STAY: Even better than visiting for the day? Take a little staycation and fully immerse yourself in all things East Nashville. New in town, Waymore's Guest House & Casual Club is a petfriendly 93-room boutique hotel located in the former Field House Jones building which was damaged in the 2020 tornado. The quirky Dive is a hybrid motel, swim club, and dive bar. The renovation pulls out all the stops, a fun modern day interpretation of the rundown 1956 Key Motor Inn decked out in vintage 70’s wallpaper and throwback wood paneling. Ever wanted to sleep inside a 115-year-old historic church? Enter The Russell, an all-brick stunner built in 1904 that’s survived its share of poverty, illness, and natural disaster — but also has seen the East Nashville community rally and rebuild in the midst of hardship. With just 23 rooms unlike any other in a town popping with new hotel options, The Russell’s owners kept many of the church’s original features like stained glass windows, original brick walls, pews reimagined as headboards, and more. Most importantly, The Russell uses a portion of every night’s stay to support local homeless ministries. An average stay at the Russell provides 16 beds and warm meals at a local homeless shelter.

WHERE TO SIP: Lucky for East Nashvillians, the neighborhood has some of the best bars in the country, literally. Four top haunts for alcoholic beverages on the East side are Attaboy, Chopper Tiki, The Fox, and Pearl Diver. For beer aficionados, check out Southern Grist, Smith & Lentz (the pizza!), and Living Waters Brewing. For caffeine stimulation, East Nashville has a wide array of options. Retrograde, Elegy, Slow Hand, Flora & Fauna, Barista Parlor, and Bongo East are just a few.

East Nashville is one of the best districts in the city for dining out, and that’s not a new trait. From the original location of Prince’s (now flocked south) to still-standing Bolton’s Spicy Chicken & Fish to newer staples like Sean Brock’s stunning flagship restaurants, Audrey and June, these dining destinations have helped put Music City on the culinary map, worldwide. In the morning hours, locals have long gathered at Nashville Biscuit House for classic breakfasts, while those in search of breakfast tacos (and a stellar burger) find happiness at Redheaded Stranger. Find Tex-Czech kolaches at strip-mall spot Yeast Nashville or hip (and tasty) cookies at HiFi Cookies. Only open on Friday through Sunday from 9am to 2pm, Shugga Hi Cafe is a black-owned, women-owned restaurant serving up homestyle vibes and comfort food (think juicy chicken and waffles alongside a standout Sunday brunch buffet) with unmatched Southern hospitality. Meanwhile, a few of my favorite spots for dinner: Butcher & Bee, Pelican & Pig, Xiao Bao, Peninsula, and the Maiz de la Vida truck at Chopper Tiki. Late night prowlers love long-time watering hole Dino's for a proper diner burger.

Music, of course, might be top of mind when exploring any part of Nashville. Longstanding local destination The Basement East is yet another shining example of strength and rebuilding — its iconic “I believe in Nashville” mural damaged from the tornado is top of mine for many remembering the storms of 2020. You can also catch a show at the 5 Spot or Jane’s Hideaway — which recently relocated to the East Side. There are also several local parks and a great Farmers Market, plus arcade/bar options for gamers. Those looking for small boutique shopping will find plenty in East Nashville. Apple and Oak, the East Nashville Crystal Store, and Nelson’s Drum Shop offer a little something for everyone looking for a unique find or even a Nashville souvenir for a visiting friend. Abode Mercantile, Jerry's Artarama, Tabla Rosa Toys, Bookshop, Welcome Home, and Gift Horse are a few other local favorites, ripe for exploring.
