Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our homes to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

Kits contain two doses of opioid reversal medication Naloxone. The new life-saving TEMPO (Training and Empowering Musicians to Prevent Overdose) Nashville Live Music Venue Program is being executed in alliance with the Metro Nashville Police Department. Tennessee Triennial Exhibit Now At The Parthenon The Parthenon and Centennial Park Conservancy representatives are holding the Tennessee Triennial exhibition on display in the East and West Galleries of the Parthenon through May 7. Kate Figler of Kate Figler Interiors delights in classic design with fresh twists. Below are the four things she's most passionate about seeing in a home. 1. Traditional purpose. “Nashville has a very unique market with new construction and renovations. Selections should not be trendy. Keep elements difficult to remove or replace as timeless as possible, and then layer in something whimsical or fun. I encourage clients to select things that will still look good 25 years from now. Many clients say, ‘I want this house to look like it has been here forever and like it belongs here.’ I spend a lot of time advising clients on that, a lot of time thinking about it, and a lot of time studying it.” 2. Textiles. "I believe your home should reflect your personality. I try to push people to bring in textiles that are one-of-a-kind and super custom. I love mixing different patterns from different materials and wallpaper patterns as well. A throw pillow is a very easy thing to swap out down the road. I encourage people to take risks in those areas. Your home is a unique reflection of you, what you're drawn to, and your taste. Having products in your home that are made by hand by someone halfway across the world.”

3. Incorporating history. “In the south, most of my clients come to me with grandmother's breakfront or dining table or dining room chair, with many antiques that have been handed down through generations. I encourage them to work those into their homes if they're in good shape and handsome. Not everything should be new. Old pieces ground a space.” 4. Make sure what you have in your home tells a story. “Display those inherited items and take all that old china out of the boxes! We can think of a fun way to display antiques in your house. We can make things work for the way you live, whether it’s by using a performance fabric on a piece or a Roman shade instead of drapery. We can ensure that an heirloom chair is in a corner rather than the main sitting area, so it gets less wear and tear.” “Being a chameleon makes this job interesting,” says Kate. Cooking With Purpose HOW CHEF LAURA LEA HELPS HER CLIENTS HEAL FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Single-Serving Blueberry Crumble DF option, GF option, vegan option, Q&E Yield: 1 serving

ingredients: • 1 cup frozen blueberries • 3 teaspoons/1 tablespoon granulated sweetener, divided (monkfruit sweetener, white sugar, coconut sugar. Add an extra teaspoon to crumble if using coconut sugar) • ½ teaspoon cornstarch or arrowroot starch • 1/8th teaspoon almond extract (sub vanilla) • 3 tablespoons blanched almond flour • 3 tablespoons rolled or instant oats • Pinch salt • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened (sub-refined coconut oil) • Optional garnish: ice cream, vanilla custard, whipped cream, frozen whipped toppings

directions: 1. Grab a microwave-safe bowl. Add blueberries and toss with 1 teaspoon sugar, starch and extract. 2. In another bowl, combine the remaining tablespoon of sugar, almond flour, oats, salt and butter. Stir into a crumble consistency. 3. Add crumble topping to blueberries and microwave on high for 4 minutes. *NOTE: for a more traditional crumble consistency, you can also make this in an ovensafe dish at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes. In early 2022, Meagan Benson felt she’d hit a brick wall in her career, feeling underwhelmed and lacking passion. One day at the beach with her husband Graham, when discussing her love of curating tea parties for family and friends, he said "you always make everything so pretty and lovely" for these tea parties — and Pretty Lovely Teas was born. Co-owned by the couple who married in downtown Franklin, Meagan created the Instagram account @prettylovelyteas, and the business snowballed from there. In fact, most of their bookings happen via DM.

Originally from the UK, Graham grew up less than 10 miles from Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire, England, where the 7th Duchess of Bedford invented afternoon tea in the 1840s. When he moved to the US for college and met Meagan, trips to his homeland led her to fall in love with all things British, especially the tradition of afternoon tea. With Pretty Lovely Teas, the Bensons bring the hallmark of beloved British tradition into customers’ homes. Meagan handles everything, curating all elements of a proper afternoon tea including savory bites, sweet treats, scones, plus linens and decor. All tea party packages are customized to suit the event, whether a bridal shower, birthday, holiday celebration or anything else. They use Nashville-based Firepot Nomadic Teas for events, which the couple says span all ages. Pretty Lovely Teas isn't stuffy and pretentious, it’s all about the intersection of the best parts of afternoon tea merged with the Southern hospitality Meagan was raised with. "At their core, both customs are about slowing down and sharing moments with family and friends around a table of delicious food," says Meagan.

"Tea is great but it’s all about the method of coming together, very similar to Thanksgiving where you gather and visit. And in a post-COVID world, we all really want and crave that in-person experience. With time at home, people have made their homes more to their liking, comfort level and coziness. The dinner party is coming back in fashion, and more intimate gatherings are trending, so why not tea too?" asks Meagan. When asked about her personal favorites and recommendations for tea when visiting the UK, Meagan is noticeably excited to share her love. In London, Meagan recommends Fortnum and Mason — "its a very popular historic department store. Their Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon is truly one of the best in the world." She also recommends very posh tea spot the Savoy. When Nashville spouses Hannah Paramore Breen and Bill Breen reached their mid-50s, they decided to remake their lives and priorities. "We already had purchased traditional long-term care insurance because we didn't want to put any burdens on our children," Hannah shares. However, when they learned about the Nashville-based amenities offered through LiveWell By Blakeford and the organization's lifetime memberships for older adults who want to live independently at home as long as possible, she says they bought into the security of knowing they could have personal support and an advocate to coordinate their care. And then, the people we were dealing with claimed some records got lost, and we essentially got delayed again. I felt like we were often at a disadvantage." She says she ended up moving her mother's living location three times in a year and a half. "With the LiveWell program, we have one trusted person to coordinate our needs and we won't have to suffer through a 50-day wait policy or lose any health benefits," Hannah says. She says she and Bill like the idea of having a familiar location as an alternative in case their needs change, which will allow them to work with people with whom they already have relationships. "We're focused on fitness and healthy diets, and work out first thing right after breakfast. So, while we have no current interest in going into a facility, fear of unknown things that might happen can discourage people from planning. Now, we feel more in control of our lives and can enter our next stage of living in a different, reassuring frame of mind."

Simplify615 is a home organization company that helps clients, truly, get it together. Brentwood neighbors and friends, Lauren Thurman and Courtney FraserMason, met a few years back when Courtney moved just across the street. Simplify615 founder Lauren, born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, worked as a licensed clinical social worker, serving grieving children and families through a local nonprofit hospice in Nashville after attending Vanderbilt. Born and raised in western Canada, Courtney has become all too familiar with the moving process over the course of her life. Courtney says her constant, long-distance moves necessitated a minimalist lifestyle, but settling in for a few years in Brentwood had led to a well-known struggle — the overwhelming accumulation of stuff. The chaos of 2020 led Lauren to look for what was next professionally, and with that plus a desire to nurture her creative side, plus a lifelong knack for organization — Simplify615 was born. The two women agree that it’s in their DNA to help others. "Creating order out of the chaos of everyday life grounds me, and the opportunity to share this joy and peace of mind with others sounds like the perfect job for me. I'm passionate about helping others in a way that I can relate to," explains Courtney. "Sorting through clutter can be overwhelming, and this is where a helping hand can move mountains. in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
