LIFESTYLE LETTER

January 2023 Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of City Lifestyle Belle Meade from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle — it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Brightside Bakeshop - West. It’s not what you do some days — it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Kroger In Belle Meade To Relocate At press time, preparations were underway to relocate the Kroger in Belle Meade at 4560 Harding Pike to a nearby building that last housed a Harris Teeter grocery store. The current Kroger location opened in 1978. Belle Meade Kroger reportedly operated out of its building longer than any other Davidson County Kroger located either west/southwest of downtown Nashville. The Harris Teeter location is at 4301 Harding Pike; that grocery store closed in February 2015.

Concierge Medical Services Nashville Addiction Recovery / Belle Meade AMP Assists Those With Alcohol And Drug Dependence Roger Starner Jones Jr., M.D., is a board-certified emergency and addiction medicine physician and founder of Nashville Addiction Recovery / Belle Meade AMP. The practices were established to provide concierge medical detox and outpatient psychiatry services to patients in a no judgment zone. Detox takes place in private residences and luxury hotel suites for patients receiving treatment for alcohol and drug dependence. "Our goal is to make patients as comfortable as possible as quickly as possible," says Dr. Jones, who founded the company with Kevin Mallory, a former Wall Street hedge fund trader. Kevin states, “We are building a next-generation health care company, providing advanced medicines, therapies and recovery strategies. We harness the power of augmented artificial intelligence and pharmacogenomics coupled with

machine learning algorithms to produce a sustainable path forward in behavioral wellness.” Some industry sources indicate that drug overdoses increased by 200% during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was linked to numerous contributing factors, including pandemic fatigue, mood disorders, seasonal depression, psychological trauma, divorces, untreated post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, grief reaction, substance use disorders, insomnia, gambling issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder and recreational alcohol use. "Detox takes three to five days. Most patients feel better after four or five hours,” says Dr. Jones, a graduate of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Jones says he's treated more than 50,000 patients and detoxed more than 1,000 during his career. "Thirty percent of patients with a substance use disorder have a coexisting psychiatric diagnosis." Kevin, who is the father of three teenage children, says every household has its own issues. "We are all just one person away from a friend or loved one who needs help." 615.753.7966 NashvilleAddictionRecovery.com BelleMeadeAMP.com

Belle Meade AMP, located at 4515 Harding Pike, Suite 326, also offers comprehensive mental health evaluations. Outpatient medical services include prescription refills, IV therapy, fitness routines, nutritional assessment, in-home counseling, in-office appointments and telehealth services.

Fun New Fitness Options In Nashville ARTICLE BY MELISSA CORBIN

STRIDE FITNESS AND AKT OPENING SOON

A recent YouGov poll reports that out of the 30% of people surveyed, 50% of them listed getting fit as their number one New Years' resolution. If this is your goal, the Nashville area welcomes two new ways to do just that. As part of the Exponential Fitness brand, STRIDE Fitness and AKT aren’t your typical experience. Expect the studios to be a little bit darker with fun club-like lighting and banging playlists to fit the vibe. Along with the experience and science behind the locally-owned studios, this year just may be the year you actually keep your resolutions.

STRIDE FITNESS The California-based STRIDE Fitness will soon be calling Murphy Road home offering a treadmill-based interval training concept. The treadmills are Woodway treads which general manager, Jodi Suglio explains was designed to mimic the feel of outdoor running/walking but with less impact. Holding a master's degree in exercise and nutrition science from Lipscomb, Jodi says one of the things that will set STRIDE apart from other studios is the use of MyZone Heart Rate System. “Part of the science in our training style is that in the middle of class our coaches will coach people to be in a certain heart rate range based on the workout that day.’ “But, don’t think I’m not a runner so I’m not going there,” Jodi encourages, “I always say to start small. You don’t want to do too much right away, or you might be tempted to say forget this.” Perfect for walkers, joggers, and runners, three class formats and leveling systems will be offered for all fitness levels. STRIDE Fitness Certified Coaches

will lead classes that focus on your actual stride along with total body workouts, and ones that are core focused. Open gym time will also be available for members to access treadmills on their own with the digital platform XPlus also an option. Jodi Suglio’s favorite beats: “Give me some Nirvana or Breaking Benjamin and I’ll do some awesome things.”

AKT Or, maybe you dance like no one’s watching? Coming soon to White Bridge Road in Belle Meade, the New York City-based AKT (Anna Kaiser Technique) features four full-body dance-based class formats focusing on low-impact, high-intensity, booty-lifting moves sure to improve anyone’s strength and flexibility. "When you're taking our Dance class, you're getting that cardio calorie burn but you're also increasing strength by transferring your weight to your toes and engaging muscles throughout the entire body to keep you balanced and agile,” general manager, Kaycee Bales explains how dance can not only give you that tight booty dancers are known for but an overall body workout. Each move of a routine is broken down during each class. But, as Kaycee says, “If exercise isn’t fun, you’re likely to not follow through.” Holding a kinesiology degree from Miami University, Kaycee also was a professional dancer in Los Angeles prior to moving to Nashville. She says, “You get to celebrate your progress as you learn and master a new dance routine every three weeks." Push AND Pull is the name of the game in the Tone class where isometrics is key to that booty burn. In the Bands class, alternate between dance and strength intervals for a workout that challenges attendees to the core. Or, opt to get hit from all directions with the plyometrics applied in the Circuit class. Offering a free introductory class, from there Kaycee promises all of the classes at AKT are beginner-friendly.

“I always say to start small. You don’t want to do too much right away, or you might be tempted to say forget this.”

Kaycee Bales' favorite beats: "You'll catch me dancing all day to ‘Whip It!’ by LunchMoney Lewis. But, I also love the Michael Jackson classic ‘Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough’!”

LiveWell By Blakeford

This Local Senior Life Program Promotes Safely Aging In Place With Peace Of Mind As a unique, personalized and comprehensive aging assistance program in Middle Tennessee, LiveWell By Blakeford offers lifetime memberships for adults 60 years of age and older who want to live independently at home as long as possible. Blakeford Senior Life’s president and chief executive officer Brian Barnes says LiveWell combines the best aspects of long-term care insurance, customized home care and community living for its members in an innovative package of benefits. “It’s the plan for people who want to be proactive, preventative and stay at home as they age. Unlike conventional LTCI policies, a LiveWell membership gives members and their families peace of mind that when a need arises, there are no waiting periods, caps or medical approval requirements to receive benefits,” adds Brian. Health industry data indicates that aging-in-place services, such as meal delivery, transportation and care management, can noticeably benefit seniors in staying active, engaged and fulfilled. “With LiveWell By Blakeford, members live better, so they also may live longer,” says Brian. LiveWell is designed to eliminate stressors that aging can place on spouses, families or individuals. Brian says the LiveWell team handles care coordination for members and takes a pre-emptive approach toward preventing issues through home safety assessments, nutritional counseling, fitness programming and patient advocacy. “As we age and our health status changes, the LiveWell program adjusts to fit varied needs,” he adds, sharing that many seniors are eager for this type of plan because they don’t want to burden their relatives or neighbors.

Benefits Of Aging In Place In Nashville: LiveWell combines the best aspects of long-term care insurance, private home care and retirement community living into an innovative package of benefits that are expertly administered and delivered personally. “We work proactively with people to map out how they’re going to be able to stay at home. Then we provide the individual attention that’s needed case-by-case with each member,” Brian assures. “As people live longer, we’re evolving the program and services to meet those needs.”

For Peace of Mind:

For Finances:

For Health and Wellness:

Oftentimes, an unexpected incident, such as a stroke or post-surgery recuperation, opens one’s eyes to the need for planning ahead, says Brian. LiveWell relieves members from the concern of depending on family and reduces the anxiety associated with managing both home and health care, he adds. “Relatives of some seniors live in completely other cities, so we fill in to decipher advice from medical professionals and to provide services needed, either temporarily or permanently.”

LiveWell membership assures clients’ non-medical health care costs are simultaneously covered and contained. Membership fees aren’t increased, state LiveWell representatives, due to any changes in one’s health status. In the event that a member requires nursing or assisted living care, a LiveWell membership not only ensures priority access to that level of care but also covers it financially, protecting members against potential care costs that could surpass $100,000 per person per year on average.

Signing up for LiveWell while still healthy and independent has many advantages, Brian asserts. The program incorporates myriad wellness initiatives and holistic approaches to aging while offering a lifelong guarantee of care. LiveWell members can visit and tap into the amenities and services of Blakeford at Green Hills, a 10-acre Continuing Care Retirement Community campus. During 2023, Brian and his staff are eager to reveal a fully renovated Wellness Center on campus, including a new indoor pool, fitness gym, salon, dining room, art studio and event space. Blakeford Senior Life is a notfor-profit provider of senior living solutions and services. Consultations can be scheduled.

For Health and Wellness Continued... In 1996, a group of citizens founded Blakeford, a nonprofit provider of quality senior lifestyle solutions and health services to senior adults. Brian began his tenure with Blakeford in 2018. He has more than 17 years of senior leadership experience, while currently leading the financial and operational aspects of this multi-site, not-for-profit senior living company. He has substantial experience in running high-quality, fiscally strong and vibrant communities. He's also developed new communities from the ground up, as well as started new home and community-based service programs. Brian says each LiveWell member also is assigned a personal care coordinator who is available to solve issues related to urgent needs and to assist with daily tasks, such as discussing medical jargon, ensuring a home is fit for aging or taking members to a doctor’s appointment. "For members, this is a much-needed resource, and for the family, the relief in knowing there is someone there who can be trusted to care for their loved one is priceless." LiveWell team specialists indicate that it’s most beneficial to consider aging-related plans when people are in their 50s, followed by securing plans before entering their 70s. Brian says the LiveWell team offers complimentary seminars regarding the program’s history, services and costs. “Between 85 and 90 percent of people want to stay in their own homes for their entire lives. Helping seniors do that is my calling, and knowing that we’re assisting generations of families to make such important decisions is gratifying.” 615.665.0694 Blakeford.com/LiveWell

‘THERE’S BEAUTY IN IMPERFECTION’

COSMETIC AESTHETIC PLANS TAILORED TO MEET INDIVIDUAL GOALS

"It's time to rethink the dialogue around beauty. Beauty doesn’t mean perfection. No one is perfectly symmetrical, not even supermodels. It’s what makes for unique beauty," says Don Griffin, M.D., owner of Nashville Cosmetic Surgery. This board-certified plastic surgeon says no two patients are exactly alike, so neither are his surgical plans. "Our team believes there's no one definition of beauty. We provide customized treatment plans designed to bring balance and harmony to enhance, not change, what makes each person unique" says Dr. Griffin. "While there's no one perfect formula for what makes a person beautiful, we believe being natural, healthy and confident is always part of the equation.

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Most of our patients are seeking subtle, natural improvements to their appearance and that's what we provide. We help our patients love what they see when they look in the mirror," he adds. "We customize surgical and non-surgical solutions to beauty and aging with an emphasis on wellness. Sometimes that includes lifestyle changes." For those seeking a wellness crash course, Dr. Griffin's wife, Susan, says The New Rules of Aging Well primer is a great place to start. "The goal is not to stop aging, it's to age well. Shouldn’t the focus be on being the best version of yourself whatever your age?" she asks. 615.321.1003 NashvilleCosmeticSurgery.com

PRIORITIZE WELLNESS IN 2023

ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON BENZ

AN INSIDE LOOK AT ARETE WELLNESS

28

S PA DAY | HEALTH + WELLNE S S

It’s 2023, and a new year also poses an opportunity to set new goals. From setting a resolution to hit a fitness goal or taking steps toward prioritizing overall health, there are plenty of tools available to place an increased priority on selfcare this year. Whether battling a longstanding injury, fighting a pesky cold that just keeps coming back or feeling extra sluggish during the winter months, it can be difficult to both identify a problem and know where to turn for relief. Situated in a comfortable clinic in Green Hills, Arete Wellness is a great place to start -- where the team at 2210 Crestmoor Road, Suite 4, states they stand behind the mantra of "excellence redefined." With an expert clinical staff onsite, including three full-time nurses and approximately 20 part-time nurses, the team at Arete Wellness says they are ready to help individuals reach their goals, whether that means healing an injury, boosting immunity or looking for an overall well-being overhaul. “If someone has an injury or ailment or is looking to better themselves, boost their immunity,

or have more energy, we have something for everything,” says registered nurse Meghan McPherson, RN-BSN. “At Arete, we prioritize overall health and wellness. When people come in, we can discuss what their health goals are and work with them on some different ways to reach those goals.” Modern techniques and traditional therapies combine across Arete’s full suite of service offerings, which include a variety of infusions, injections, wellness treatments, lab services and even healthy bites, juices and kombucha available to purchase on-site. Known for boosting hydration, Meghan says IV infusions and injections are available to tailor to each patient’s unique goals, and can be administered in the clinic or even in-home. Other infusions and injectables are available, such as a vitamin C treatment for an immunity boost, or a B12 injection for an extra dose of energy. As singer/songwriter Sam Hunter attests: "Arete stays on the front end of the progress [of the health and wellness world]. I’ve been burning the candle at both ends for several years now and their treatments help me get my mind and body back on track when I’ve worn myself down." For an expanded focus on self-care, Arete offers a broad range of wellness treatments each targeting a different goal. Book a cryotherapy chamber, which exposes the body to cold temperatures for a short time, proven by industry sources to aid in recovery, help with inflammation and reduce pain. Despite its short duration, cryotherapy can burn 600 to 800 calories per session. Or, visit an infrared sauna to help rid the body of excess toxins. Hyperbaric chambers are also offered, used for a variety of ailments from ankle injuries to traumatic brain injuries.

Additionally, lab services, such as COVID-19 antigen and antibody testing, can be performed on-site, as well as food sensitivity, allergen and micronutrient testing to uncover problems that may begin with gut health. “It’s really rewarding to see a company that wants to truly work to heal someone from the inside out,” Meghan shares. “I think there is something really special about finding more natural ways to help someone reach their health goals.” Many people make whole-body wellness the ultimate resolution for 2023. Whether booking an appointment or simply walking in, the team of experts at Arete confirm they stand ready to help formulate a plan to prioritize wellness this year – from professional athletes to professional moms and everyone in between. Multi-level memberships are available, or services can be purchased a-la-carte. Plus, discounts are offered for new clients. The clinic is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are required. “Wellness is within reach for everybody, and that’s something that we pride ourselves on being able to offer,” says Meghan. 615.981.0340 Arete-Wellness.com JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Celebrity Trainer Gunnar Peterson FITNESS IS OUR COMMON GROUND

Gunnar Peterson is a household name when it comes to the fitness world, with a sprawling client list as diverse as his training methods. After more than three decades in the industry, training universally-recognized names from professional athletes to Hollywood celebrities, and his gym’s lease ended in Beverly Hills earlier this year, it was time for a change. Gunnar, his wife, Jess, and their two youngest children decided to flock to southeast to middle Tennessee for a myriad of reasons, including their oldest daughter’s enrolling at Duke. Gunnar and Jess had visited the area many times over the previous couple of years, but now they were on the clock. They fell in love with the breadth and space that Tennessee provides, after many years spent in the city. Beyond the space to spread out, he also adores the added sense of family values that raising kids here fosters. But Gunnar isn’t new to the south: he grew up in Houston, Texas, attended college at Duke, and lived in New Orleans. Gunnar’s parents have called Tennessee home for a decade — living on a farm outside of Memphis, so the call was natural for the celebrity trainer to move back to be near them, and for them to spend more time with their grandchildren. Unfortunately, as happens too often in life, things didn’t go according to plan.

One morning in the spring, Gunnar’s fitness-minded mother went for her usual mile-long swim but was hospitalized later that day before slipping into a coma, and heartbreakingly, passing away. For anyone who has lost a parent, specifically a mom, that loss deeply changes people. Gunnar says, like most, he isn’t yet able to comprehend such a sudden, life-changing loss, but the motivational trainer has already let this loss teach him what’s important in life. "I had a good friend at the Lakers say 'There’s no crying on the yacht,' and for me, this rings especially true now. We are so lucky, blessed even, in this life, the small stuff just doesn’t matter. The real problems are things like your mom being sick, losing her, and all of that small stuff just fades away," says Gunnar. Truly, not sweating the small stuff and appreciating the time he has with his father just three hours away and his family, are key to Gunnar as he settles into life in Williamson County. Since moving to Nashville on July 3, what he calls a personal "Independence day" and celebration of freedom and room to breathe, Gunnar laughs, he's been quick to make his own stamp on Nashville's fitness community in addition to his worldwide wellness thumbprint. He serves as chief of athletics for F45, while the father of five also

recently set up shop renovating a space in Cool Springs, a gym he's named Common Ground TN. "Fitness should always be our common ground. Whether we agree or disagree on the world's larger issues doesn’t matter, we can all find common ground in improving ourselves." Currently, it's Gunnar and one other trainer, Collin Schoen, working one-on-one with clients for private sessions. Once the gym's expansion is complete, Common Ground TN will staff four full-time trainers focused on training with an athletic bent and added functional components centered around body composition, performance, and overall quality of life. Spending a trio of decades helping people improve their lives, in addition to private training, Gunnar has offered workouts on DVD since the early 2000s, including his Core Secrets DVD series and the Best Ever Hollywood Workout DVD. He also wrote a best-selling book, titled G-Force in 2005, about training and creating a positive mindset and created exercise machines the Bottom Line, The RAC and Hoop Hands.

“I’ve been in this industry for 31 years…24 of those years owning a gym. The people who come through my door come from a broad demographic. Different socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, ages, religions, and aisles of the political arena. Yet they are able to train hard, side by side, chit-chat, and fist-bump after the last set. That is their common ground." Gunnar had a quote displayed in his old gym, one he says he'll also add to the new walls once they finish the expansion at Common Ground TN: "Everything you do inside the gym makes everything you do outside the gym better." He emphasizes that the time spent in the gym improves mental acuity while decreasing absenteeism in the workplace, and at the same time increasing resistance to illness, disease and injury, all the while improving all relationships and self-confidence. "It all means you carry yourself differently, which means people see you differently, which positions you to be more likely to succeed in all aspects of life. That, is the common ground. We can all be in the same space doing our own thing, and it works beautifully."

“Anytime people are in the gyms, there is a mutual respect, a shared end goal of self-improvement which lends itself to all aspects of your life being better,” - Gunnar Peterson

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
