M AN OF THE HOUSE As the Georgian Project rolls into June, the paint is being applied, the plumbing is being installed and appliances are being delivered. Move-In day is rapidly approaching, and the Georgian Project will soon be over. Over the last year, we’ve discussed a lot about how the changes to the house will create special spaces for the homeowners. Eye-catching architectural details or creative uses of light and dark that will make the home unique. “This has been a designer’s dream,” says Joe Jennings, “We have been able to bring this beautiful 1968 ranch-style house into 2022.” An area that we haven’t discussed are the specifically masculine touches that we have added. First and foremost, the backyard was made for Dad. After moving all of the overgrown boxwoods to the back of the property to create a green cloud barrier, we added a gas firepit with six Adirondack chairs surrounding. “The space is perfect for lounging on a cool night,” Joe adds, “And, its’ only a patio away from the grill area.” The grill area is designed to match the large half circle patio. It is somewhat hidden from the views from the house by a reclaimed shuttered wall on the screened-in porch. A fun fact is that the shutters used in the wall once hung around the windows on the front of the house. Covering the Pit Boss grill is a metal grill veranda to protect the grill and the griller from the elements. Another masculine nod to the pre-renovation home is the counter in the den. Once a built-in stereo system, we removed the stereo leaving the access panel through the counter. We built a shelf under the opening. Now, there is a great storage space for remote controls and other electronics. “It has been such an exciting project,” says Joe Jennings, “From working as the homeowners’ realtor in purchasing the house, to creating the design, to making the homeowners’ dream a reality. THE AIRPLANE FOR DOERS A REVIEW: Cirrus fits the bill for those who love to explore and seek new luxury experiences on weekends

When you ask someone from an Aircraft manufacturer how their product stands out from their competition you expect to hear something technical. “Our airplanes are 0.03% more efficient” or “Our plane can climb 2% faster than our competition”. Ask someone at Cirrus Aircraft the same question and you’ll get a much different answer- “Our company is lifestyle and relationship-driven. We like to focus on how our airplanes can change your lifestyle.” Cirrus customers tend to be highly active, driven, and adventurous individuals. Usually business owners who travel to multiple locations throughout the week and love to explore and seek new experience on the weekend. Cirrus sees its airplanes, the SR series or the Cirrus Vision Jet as instruments of their clients’ lifestyles. There are 5000 airports throughout the US but only 500 commercial airports. Depending on where you’re traveling there could be a 3 hour car journey waiting for you once you land but in a Cirrus you may have the luxury of landing at a small airport across the street from your destination. Not only does this speed up the process but it also relieves the stress of commercial travel. Cirrus Airplanes are built in Duluth Minnesota but the HQ, delivery and training center is in Knoxville. They also have service and training centers in Dallas,

Scottsdale, and Orlando. When taking delivery of a Cirrus airplane you receive 3 days of hands-on flight training with a Cirrus flight instructor, an added bonus to ensure your ownership experience is as safe as possible. Safety is something Cirrus takes very seriously. Aviation can be unforgiving but all Cirrus airplanes are built with a unique feature- a parachute. No, not one you sit on or have strapped to your back, a parachute for the plane itself. Enter an unrecoverable situation or an emergency and all you have to do is reach over your head and pull on the handle between the two pilots’ seats and a rocket fires a parachute from the top of the plane allowing it, and its passengers to float gently down to safety. This system has proven to be highly effective and at the time of this writing has saved more than 200 lives. In fact, Cirrus has an overall safety rating that is twice as good as the average rating in their segment. Cirrus is the only aviation company in the world to have such a feature but they haven’t stopped there- they’ve developed software and avionics systems that make flying incredibly easy. You can fly one of their aircraft using no paper, and no mental math. 39% of Cirrus buyers last year were completely new to aviation so the company does all it can to ensure everyone flying in one of its planes comes home safe.

THE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE. I’ve been around aviation in one form or another my whole life but I’m not a pilot. I was excited to experience the Cirrus SR22T GTS but I thought I should probably get some insight from someone with decades of flying experience who is also new to Cirrus. Bruce Langer is a retired pilot and one of those immediately likable guys who you can tell has a great story to tell. He exudes that calm reassuring competence and confidence that only experienced pilots have. Bruce has been flying airplanes since he was 17 years old and throughout a 29 year career at UPS, nearly 3 years of that time were spent in the air crisscrossing the globe. He’s flown everything from small taildraggers up to the Boeing 747 and lots of planes in between so I was surprised to learn that despite the huge experience gap between the two of us, we both had the same outstanding impression- this airplane feels really safe. Bruce especially liked the non-retractable landing gear “safer that way, one less thing to go wrong”. He actually said it flies just like a 747, just a little smaller. I suspect he was being a little snarky but he emphasized that if someone new to aviation asked him which path to take, “this(SR22T) is the route to go.” Nick Elenz is the sales director for Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. As we walked out onto the flight line towards his red and black SR22T GTS I thought, “what a good looking airplane.” As a photographer I pay special attention to these sorts of things. The airplane’s proportions, lines and the overall build just look stunning. There’s an old saying, “if it looks right it flies right” and I was about to find out. The Cirrus SR22T is very easy to get into, even the backseat of the plane (If you’re new to the world of aviation- this is not common). The vertical hinge doors are very similar to new McLaren supercars and leave a huge amount of space to slide into your seat with ease. With leather stitched doors and control panel the interior looks more like a luxury car than a light aircraft. Once the engine burst to life I was surprised at how quiet the engine and composite prop were, even without the headset it’s not difficult to talk inside the plane. The Cirrus SR22T leaps off the runway thanks to its turbocharged 315 horsepower engine and soars like a dream. Once we rapidly climbed to 5,000ft I took the controls and spent a few minutes banking and slicing around puffy cloud formations. The view provided by the massive side windows is spectacular, the best I’ve ever experienced in a private plane. The controls are reassuringly firm and responsive giving the SR22T a very sporty feel. Speaking of controls, they’re quite different from your granddad’s taildragger. In the left seat you have a left hand joystick and in the right seat you have a right hand joystick. The absence of a traditional control yoke protruding from the control panel just adds to the feel of spaciousness in the cabin. I completely enjoyed every minute flying the SR22T, the last time I had that much fun flying I was sitting on an ejection seat that was not plush nor did it have stitched leather. Nick took over as we banked back toward BNA for landing. As we lined up with the runway I studied the control screens, everything was there in brilliant, easy to see graphics and it took very little time to grow accustomed to finding the right information. In the very little time I’d spent flying in the SR22T I’d grown very confident in the airplane’s capabilities. I never once thought about the parachute stored just over my right shoulder but I think that’s that’s the idea. Build the safest plane in the entire general aviation world so that the only time you have to think about that parachute is when it has just saved your life. The aviation world is full of compromise. Speed at the cost of efficiency or maneuverability at the cost of stability- but for the doers, the fast-paced and adventure-seeking pilots who fly a Cirrus they don’t have to compromise. Imagine the ability to park your car and walk to your airplane, be airborne in a matter of minutes cruising at over 200 mph at 25,000 in your own airplane. This incredible freedom could change everything about your lifestyle, and that is exactly what Cirrus is waiting to do.

Quality is the hallmark of our practice, assures Patrick Ryan, MD, FACS, owner of the Nashville Vein and Vascular Institute. Dr. Ryan says they actually measure the quality of their treatments. "We invested heavily in the Vascular Quality Initiative sponsored by the Society for Vascular Surgery, which is a database that measures our results and compares them with vascular surgeons and practices around the United States." The Institute was the first, and as of 2021, is still the only private practice in middle Tennessee to embrace the VQI, reveals the physician, who is board certified in general surgery as well as vascular surgery. He says they then analyze the quality-driven data to enhance their best practices and to improve outcomes. Dr. Ryan says the practice earned 3 out of 3 stars every year since joining the initiative. "We know what our results are, for instance, in stroke or cranial nerve injury after carotid endarterectomy. We know what our limb-salvage rates are for minimally invasive vascular surgery and leg bypass. We also measure our results in open and minimally invasive aortic surgery, and other procedures," he adds. Dr. Ryan and his family moved to Nashville in 2004, and focused on lifestyle improvement strategies for patients. He says preventative medicine is the cornerstone of his practice. She's been trained to perform a wide variety of vascular procedures for PAD and aneurysmal disease, both open and endovascular -- on the carotid, subclavian, mesenterics, thoracic and abdominal aorta, lower extremity stents and bypasses, ports and dialysis access. Shane Nasby, formerly of Bellevue barbecue destination Honeyfire, is setting up shop this summer in Nashville with a cool new smash burger spot, Cledis — named in honor of his grandfather, Cledis Nolen. Expected to open this summer, Shane and his wife, Angela, say this burger joint will be located in the former Various Artists Brewing space at 1011 Elm Hill Pike. Cledis, born in 1926, grew up in the hills of Kentucky during the Great Depression. Shane recalls childhood in Indiana, but also

spending time at his grandfather’s roadside restaurant, the Midway Cafe. It's here Shane first dipped his toes into the restaurant industry and came to admire Cledis' passion for helping people. Since, Shane has gone on to co-open HoneyFire BBQ and made TV appearances on Food Paradise and Chopped. The Nasbys met nearly two decades ago at church, and have two children, Harper and Nolen (also named in honor of Cledis). restaurant is not only to serve excellent burgers in a comfortable setting but also to create a place Cledis would’ve been proud of and felt comfortable visiting himself. Shane describes Cledis as a humble, simple man — "one of the kindest souls you’d ever meet. Cledis lived a life full of compassion and kindness. No one who knew Cledis ever had a bad word to say. So to see his name being honored this way is very special to me." The Nasbys plan to continue their family tradition through Cledis, the restaurant. Each Monday, Cledis will close to feed the hungry in Nashville, and partner will People Loving Nashville to hire employees who graduate PLN’s restoration program, which helps the unhoused get off the streets and back into the workforce. "We want to lower barriers, making it easier for people to transition back into the workforce by providing a safe community for people to be honest about where they are in life, but still be able to have a job," says co-owner Angela. The merch at Cledis also supports the Nasbys cause: Cledis logo hats are available for purchase at Cledis.Store, with proceeds from the sale of each hat providing two meals to feed the hungry. Once open, burger aficionados can expect classic smash burgers and Oklahoma-style smashed onion burgers, plus inventive takes like the "Skippy Thai Yay" -- slathered with Thai peanut butter sauce, bacon and chiles toreados. Sides include fries (which can also be served with roasted chili queso for dipping), sweet potato tots and pickle fries. For dessert: scoopable cheesecake sundaes. The backyard beer garden is slated to be a centerpiece, with live music appearances and collaborative chef burger features. Cledis will be a family-friendly destination with vibes drawing inspiration from the 1980s. Levi Hummon’s mother, Becca Stevens, is the founder of Thistle Farms, a priest, an author, and an entrepreneur. His father, Marcus Hummon, is one of Nashville’s most prolific Grammy-winning songwriters, having written for The Chicks and Rascal Flatts. But who is Levi Hummon as an artist? With more than 145 million streams on Spotify, a dedicated fan base that can sing his lyrics back to him, and wisdom to spare — he’s poised to thrive. “I can say this, the only reason I’m a strong man is because my mom is a strong woman. Growing up with the women of Thistle Farms is the reason I am who I am. My dad had so much of an impact on my creative self. My soul and the reason I’m doing this and why I feel like there’s a platform and I feel like there’s hope is because of my mom. She’s a rock star.” When asked about the weight of expectations, he laughs. “I ignore it. I don’t really feel a weight from my parents, only support. I want to impress my dad, and to show him I’m a legit artist, and I also want to step away from his shadow. Still, my favorite moments are coming home and sitting at the piano, playing him my new music, and hearing his. Now that I’m thirty, those are the moments in music I value the most, my dad playing the banjo and me playing the guitar, just picking and chilling.” Regina Stuve, the vice president and general manager of pfa Entertainment Media and Marketing and close family friend, shares a story. “Levi told me that his dad wakes up every morning and plays the piano starting at 7 am. That’s how he started his day as a kid.” “Every single morning growing up,” Levi says. “And know this — my room growing up was in the basement, and the piano is right above … I would hear my dad’s boot just stomping on the ground as he kept the tempo. Now I twitch every time I hear that exact same sound. “I didn’t realize how much of an impact it had, hearing my dad write songs … until I left Nashville. When I picked up a guitar for the first time, I was like, ‘Why am I listening to The Clash, The Ramones, Mumford and Sons, and then I pick up a guitar and it sounds like Rascal Flatts?’ It was always a country song or pop country, and that’s where I laid my roots in songwriting. I was writing songs every single day, sometimes twice.” All this occurred in Florida, where Levi went to art school for two years. He sent his songs back to Nashville. His dad eventually told him he might as well come home but wouldn’t let him drop out of college, so he enrolled at Belmont. After six months, Levi did leave school — because he had a publishing deal and record contract. “I had a lot of work to do when I signed to Big Machine. I realized that I needed to do some artist development for myself. I’d never really played in a show, never really toured. I told the label, ‘I need to do this on my own for a little bit before I can do it with y,all.’ It’s an incredible feeling to step

away and decide if you’re gonna believe in yourself. I’ve been able to open for people like Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Lady A, and Martina McBride — some of my favorite artists of all time. I’ve played the Opry now 20-something times. It’s just been an incredible journey so far.” He started releasing songs independently in 2017. “I feel like we’re just getting started. It’s not just the industry that gets to define what you’re going to put out now. Fans are so accessible thanks to things like Tik Tok and Instagram. You can put out songs that are a little different and if they really react, there’s not just an option to say no to them. They drive it.” When asked where he finds his support, Levi says, “My parents are huge, Thistle Farms is an inspiration for me, and the people who’ve been supportive of me from day one, Fletcher Foster, Jimmy Robbins, Eric Arjes, John Ozier, those who’ve really championed my music, Greg Galloway, Regina Stuve - I’m always trying to surround myself with good people, because at the end of the day I want it to feel like family. I always want it to be a relationship. Music is a business, at the same time it’s so personal. My marketing scheme is what I do every day, and my songs are my heart, so how can you not want to surround yourself with people who are part of your family?”

Referencing his most recent release, “For Me,” he says, “It’s for everybody. It’s a love song, but it’s also really about redemption, and it’s a song [that says] it’s okay to be flawed and messed up, and it’s okay to change. The most honest and genuine version of change is not when you change for somebody else, but when you change for yourself. When you find somebody in your life, when you have a mother, when you have a girl, anybody, when they love you so much that you want to change for yourself? They’re doing good work. When I wrote that song, the original idea was that I wanted somebody who loved me for me, and then I thought, actually, I kind of want to love me for me, and then it turned into, I want you to love me so much that I want to change for me.” Levi says that fans can look forward to “a bunch of new music coming out this summer, early fall,” and he has local shows on the horizon. On June 2, he’ll play the Ole Smoky Distillery Shine Fest to celebrate National Moonshine Day, and he’s part of the lineup for Nashville’s July Fourth “Let Freedom Ring” celebration. “So many people are cheering for him,” says Regina Stuve. “I can’t wait to see what he does.” Neither can we.

On September 11, 2001, Richard Casper was a high school student, and the events of that day would change the course of his life forever. “It inspired me to go into the Marine Corps, so two weeks after graduation, I was on a bus going to boot camp,” he says. While in the service, he spent time guarding then-President of the United States, George W. Bush. He also went to war. “I was in Fallujah, Iraq, for seven months,” says Richard. During that time, he was badly injured and his buddy, Luke Yepsen, made the ultimate sacrifice. After leaving the Marines, it was hard for Richard to transition back into civilian life. “I couldn’t do a lot because my anxiety and depression were so bad.” It was at this time, while living in Bloomington, Illinois, that he randomly found an art and music program at a community college. He says it’s what ultimately saved his life. “They started teaching me about art and how to use color to symbolize emotions. Being able to express myself without talking about what was wrong with me, and being able to evoke emotion from others who would then understand me, was powerful.” After receiving his associate’s degree, Richard applied to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “Through these classes, my brain was remapping and restructuring all these negative situations into a positive because I was turning them into art pieces.” He then expanded into songwriting. “I still had an issue talking about Luke, and I thought, ‘What if I could write a song so people would know his story?’” Eventually, Richard hooked up with Mark Irwin, who has written songs for Billy Ray Cyrus, Alan Jackson, Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift, and Tim McGraw. “I traveled to Nashville and wrote a song with him within three hours,” he says. “I was blown away.” He wanted to bring these healing tools to other veterans, and along with Linda Tarrson, founded CreatiVets in 2013. “It’s strictly for wounded veterans — someone who’s been to a combat zone and has mental, emotional, moral, or physical injuries from that experience,” says Richard. Today, the nonprofit has helped veterans across 48 states in both its music and art programs. With its four-day music program, vets are paired with mentors and work with accomplished songwriters and music artists backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. Once finished, these songs are recorded at the Rukkus Room and OMNIsound Studios.

“Each veteran thinks they’re alone in their fight, but as they hear each other’s songs, they feel connected,” he says. “They get to heal together.” They also have their photographs taken by Jason Myers, a well-known photographer who donates his time. A majority of veterans with serious mental-health issues become isolated and never seek help. “In order to reach them in their homes, we’ve partnered with Big Machine Records to release our veterans’ songs.” These songs are sung by renowned artists like Vince Gill and Justin Moore. Its three-week art programs are held at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Belmont University, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Tuition, food and housing is completely covered and like regular students, the vets have access to wood working, ceramics and other classes. With the help of the teachers, who are esteemed artists, they create art pieces that reflects something they’ve been through.

Greg Pihs, a Marine from Chapel Hill who served alongside Richard and Luke at one point, knows how valuable these programs are to veterans. He wrote a song with CreatiVets about a situation he could never verbalize, and it helped him to finally process his pain. “For the first time in my life, I had a voice, and that was life-changing for me,” he says. “It greatly helped me over the last three years.” Today, Greg is a mentor in the program as well as a successful businessman. CreatiVets is always in need of volunteers, especially in Nashville, where they have a new facility to hold classes. “We need people who are willing to volunteer and share their artistic skills, whether it be painting, drawing, jewelry making or something else.” Like any nonprofit, it also needs funding. “We have more veterans on our waiting list than we have money coming in,” says Richard. “In order to support them, we need to grow.” To learn more and help support CreatiVets, go to CreatiVets.org.
