IN THE HOME STRETCH As we roll into the merry month of May, the Georgian Project is getting close to completion. It has been a crazy year for renovation and design! With all of the logistical and delivery issues, the material shortages; and staffing issues, there has been the potential for nothing to go right. Fortunately, the amazing team at Hammond & Brandt has kept us moving forward, and the end is in sight. “When move in date approaches, the job of the designer really takes off,” says Joe Jennings, “The finishing touches with trim and tile work are going in. Meanwhile, the owners are beginning to imagine move in day with every accessory in place.” At the beginning of the Georgian Project, Joe laid the foundation for everything from curtain and upholstery fabric to tile and furniture choices. Those choices have exploded into hundreds of details, all of which need to be addressed. “Everywhere you look in the Georgian Project, from the unbelievable mother-of-pearl tile ceiling in the powder room to the intricate molding in the secondary hallway, adds layers of interest,” Joe adds, “Combine that with how we have used color in this house makes the Georgian Project unique
and
special.
There
are
a
hundred “WOW”
moments in this home.” Something really awesome is the special space for pets. We have created a pet retreat under a back staircase. Max and Barney, are part of the family, and will have a bedding area with access to water, light, and fans. “You shouldn’t miss the pocket pet-gate,” says Joe, “The Chippendale design matches the stair railing used throughout the home, and secretly hides in the door trim. It will provide privacy for Max and Barney and let them stay in their space. It’s another example of how cool and usable can combine to make the perfect home.” If you want to learn more about The Georgian Project, go to www.readytosellnashville.com.

LIFESTYLE LETTER
May Ladies
May 2022 PUBLISHER
Jennifer Downs | bellemeade@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community that have left me inspired. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

Iconic Iroquois Steeplechase Rite Of Spring Since 1941 Women Intertwined With Nashville’s Passionate Equestrian Community And Time-Honored Tradition
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALI MILLER
Several loyal ladies have lent vital support to the Iroquois Steeplechase -- an annual event that attracts more than 25,000 spectators to the Equestrian Center at Percy Warner Park in Nashville to watch some of the best horses and riders in the world. The Iroquois Steeplechase is a full day of racing whose organizers state the mission as managing and producing a world-class event that supports Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and other local community nonprofits. The event’s rich history dates back to pasture races in Middle Tennessee during the 1930s, and now fans come from all walks of life. Meet these women who adore their special connections to these large, gentle and beautiful animals, relationships that give them undeniably inspirational solace. These ladies also have special connections with each other, as they’ve crisscrossed life together, often going on the same trail rides or volunteering for the same initiatives.

Sara Jo Gill Daughter of the late steeplechase owner Calvin Houghland, Sara Jo Gill, served as honorary co-chair at the 2010 Iroquois Steeplechase, and again in 2019. She and her husband, Don Gill, ride horses frequently and used to work as trainers at their residence, Bright Hour Farm in Brentwood. Sara Jo’s father was a key part of the event since its inception. His father, Mason Houghland, was one of the founders and was chairman of the race for the first 17 years. Calvin Houghland rode in the first Iroquois in 1941, and won it as a jockey two years later. He captured the event five times as an owner, and chaired the race for 34 years. As the first woman on the Steeplechase Race Committee, she also was a trustee. “I think people love the race for so many reasons. It’s such a magnificent tradition, and it’s known and respected nationally and internationally,” says Sara Jo.

Virginia “Gigi” Lazenby A lifelong dedication to the sport earned Virginia “Gigi” Lazenby, of Nashville, the 2016 honorary co-chair role of the 75th Iroquois Steeplechase. As a horse owner herself, she also serves on the organization’s race committee and has been a board member of the National Steeplechase Association. Gigi’s father worked for Mason Houghland, one of the initial founders of the “Nashville’s rite of spring since 1941,” who became the secretary of the Volunteer State Horsemen’s Foundation. Gigi says she grew up around the Iroquois, as friends with Henry Hooker, who chaired the race committee for 17 years, and George Sloan, an amateur jockey whose father, John, also co-founded the Iroquois. Her brother, David Banks, also was a trainer and former jockey. Her most memorable memory, she says, was when she, as a 16-year-old, was asked by Calvin Houghland to be an outrider at Steeplechase, which meant she had to ride side-saddle. “I borrowed an outfit and helped lead horses to the post on a Thoroughbred that Calvin gave to me. It was such an honor to be invited, and that was my first direct introduction to the event,” she says. Another standout memory involves being an outrider when a horse blew the rail and knocked her off her horse. Gigi’s third favorite memory happened in 2014 when her brother, David, who once was one of the youngest riders at the Iroquois, and she watched one of their horses, Pleasant Woodman, win. “My brother said that was one of the happiest days of his life. He died that December after that race, and I still have the bottle of Iroquois Special Label Jack Daniels won with that race. I will never drink it,” she vows. “I like the horse aspect of Steeplechase, and those who attend enjoy the cheering, the entertainment and being able to get outdoors for one of the first events of each spring. It’s a fun party and a wonderful social gathering,” she adds.

Mary Wade Mary and Alex Wade undoubtedly are counted among Nashville’s Steeplechase royalty. They hosted the 2021 Steeplechase Eve cocktail supper in coordination with The Volunteer State Horsemen’s Foundation. While Mary certainly marked that special 80th running of the event, she’s celebrated most for the past five decades. “I grew up in Belle Meade, sometimes riding bareback on Lynwood/Westview Ave., and my grandfather had a tradition of riding horses on Belle Meade Boulevard,” recalls Mary. Alex’s grandfather was the first clerk of the course, so their families are always mindful about the course’s condition and irrigation needs. Mary’s currently on the race committee. She, Alex and their daughter, DeeDee Wade, enjoy sponsoring the owner/trainer/rider tent for the event. “It’s nice to be so close to the competitors, horses and volunteers, even after the race,” says Mary. “Steeplechase is still Nashville’s signature spring event. We’re all ready to enjoy the beauty of the city at that point, it’s typically held the weekend after the Derby so we’re filled with excitement, and it’s a fun way for the community to come together. It’s great that this equestrian experience is open to everyone,” says Mary, who admits she particularly enjoys wearing Christine Moore Millinery hats to the race. Whether sitting on the hill, being on the infield or gathering in box seats, Mary says there’s a way for anyone to join the festivities. Mary is quick to applaud the wonderful cooperation everyone related to the Steeplechase event has received from the Metro Parks staffers through the years. She says it’s also been a pleasure to meet other race sponsors and to make connections with the Children’s Hospital representatives and doctors. “Because of the special ritual we’ve had in Nashville, I was inspired to attend other Southern steeplechases, from New Jersey to Virginia to South Carolina, and had fun at those as well. But it’s the Iroquois race that gets my heart,” asserts Mary. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BE L L E M E A D E

Marianne Byrd As president of Iroquois Steeplechase since 2017, Marianne Byrd’s only missed the Steeplechase twice since she was 10 years old. And those two absences were due to the births of two of her children. She started as a young spectator then progressed to an outrider on her “cleanest, best-braided pony” escorting racehorses to the starting line, to a patrol and then tower judge who ensures the races are run fairly and where one can “really hear what the jockeys are yelling to each other,” to handing out participation ribbons and to an honorary chair of the event along with her husband, Andrew Byrd. Once tracing the history of the race for its 75th anniversary, she says they realized that their two families together had been involved since its start and the development of the course. “The Steeplechase has been in our family’s fabric from my earliest times and from the grassroots up. My dad was on the stone crew who built the first box seats in 1940,” she says. “When I got asked to be an outrider, that was some proud day in my 12-year-old life.” She recalls the years at which Steeplechase held the Diana Plate for lady riders, before women could compete equally with male riders. Marianne’s father, Albert Menefee, raced at the Steeplechase during the 1940s-1950s. She says the first year he competed, he fell off his horse at the third fence and was trampled by the other steeds. He broke three ribs, knocked out many teeth and cracked his hand, however, he came back two years later and won in 1950. She says she grew up on the family’s Brentwood farm, learning to ride and fox hunt on horseback by having her pony follow closely her father’s horses. “There’s the romance of little girls with their horses, and The Steeplechase represents a unique continuity in my life,” she adds. Marianne has volunteered with the event in so many capacities: auction volunteer, chief placing judge and the race committee, moving from coordinator to treasurer to president. She and Andrew are box holders on the sixth row, seats that hold special meaning because they were inherited from her grandfather. A new offering at this year’s race, Marianne reminds, is the new venue, Royal 615 Lounge, located in centerfield. She says it will be filled with multiple DJ entertainment, craft cocktails and a vibrant vibe. The 81st annual race meet will be held on May 14. For tickets, contests and schedules, visit IroquoisSteepleChase.org. The event has donated more than $10 million to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt since 1981. Tailgating vehicles must be in place by 11 a.m. that day. Opening ceremonies begin at noon, with the first race starting at 1 p.m. There are six races, with approximately 40 minutes between each race. The stick horse race will occur after the second scheduled race. Tailgate winners will be announced at approximately 3:30 p.m. The grand prize will include a topside tailgating spot for Steeplechase as well as other fabulous prizes and giveaways. A parade of hounds is slated for 4:50 p.m. At approximately 5:30 p.m., the races end with the featured race, the Calvin Houghland Iroquois.

Women Making Waves in Nashville
SKILLED, LOVELY LADIES WHO MAKE GOOD WAVES AND GET THINGS DONE
Nashville is such an insanely popular place, but what does the region need that it doesn’t already have? Oh, what a great question; since you’re asking a New Yorker, I could probably dive into this pretty deep, but two things: Intentional public meeting spaces, where people can dine outdoors, sit and read a book, and enjoy their morning coffee. We have so many neighborhoods that provide ecosystems of service providers in small concentrated areas, yet no communal space. Imagine if Broadway had a block that was reserved for cafe style seating for people to connect. Or if on 12 South in the middle of the businesses there was a communal public area with bike racks, tables, shade and a dog park attached to it. More outdoor space that doesn’t stretch the outskirts of neighborhoods, yet erects itself right in the middle of all the action to create a space for pause that’s designed to bring people together. New York has done an incredible job in Time Square, West Village and around 34th St. We could learn from this. My second would be more public bike rentals, the city has such an easy layout to navigate, I wish there was an initiative to get Nashvillians on more bikes. What do you most like about working with the Nashville environment? Oh I love that Nashville has that front porch swing, sipping tea, waving at every neighbor that passes by kind of vibe. I opened a coworking space, partially financed by crowdfunding, only after living here for 1.5 years. Everyone who supported my vision, my dream and bought into the concept when we didn’t have HVAC, walls or even electricity; made me feel like I was welcome long before I even started calling Nashville home fulltime. Nashville is a place where everyone will lend a hand and cheer you on to succeed; that’s rare in a city of this size and growth.
Kathy Thomas
Owner of 615 Collective
Why is public coworking space valuable, and especially beneficial to women? I believe your house should be your home, not your office. I’m not sure when we started telling people that working from the same place you lay your head at night, do laundry, and dinner with family and friends should also be the place you work. Nashville is in the top 10 cities that produces the highest number of female entrepreneurs, yet every coworking space prior to Collective615 has a very heavy male make-up to not only in the design but the majority of memberships are held by men, too. Collective615 solved a void in the coworking environment in Nashville.
for everyone in Nashville. I would recommend leaning into a network of people who fill your cup, support your endeavors and most of all inspire you to show up as your best self. That will look different for each person, so much like buying a great pair of jeans, you’ll have to try a few on to find the one that best fits your needs, both professionally and personally. Some of my personal favorite ways to connect with like-minded women are groups, like TN Women Connect, Heels & Handshakes and BrainTrust, to name a few.
What type of networking steps or activities would you recommend? One of the things Nashville excels at is providing women access to an abundance of networking resources. I believe there’s a community
What personal motto helps guide your day-to-day decisions? “Let Fear Be Your Fuel” -- if it doesn’t scare me, I’m not stretching myself enough.

Britney Campbell
SVP of Marketing and Public Relations at Legends Bank
Britney’s brainchild, Her Bank, is an initiative focused on delivering a better banking experience by women for women. “Banking is very much a relationship business. We’re empathetic to situations and questions many women have, and are striving to be more accessible so we can brainstorm options with our female customers. It’s about customers trusting us with their money, and we’re flexible so they can lean on us when decisions matter most,” she assures. Britney says she got creative ideas about how to enhance banking relationships for women while connecting with other female business coaches, attorneys, wealth advisors and professionals at Collective615. “This location is filled with incredibly talented and intelligent women who’ve poured themselves into their business, yet conversations around money and finances were still uncomfortable. I wanted to find a way the bank could be a resource to improve women’s confidence around these topics,” she explains.
“I’ve lived in Middle Tennessee my whole life and I love it! I wouldn’t live anywhere else. We have everything you need—well, except a beach with an ocean view!” she quips. Britney also was one of five inspirational women who recently championed females in business through the “Women Empowering Women” campaign on The Nashville Sign for networking group Heels and Handshakes. Britney says she appreciates the ups and downs of life and business. “We aren’t guaranteed to have everything work in our favor all the time. I try to see ‘obstacles’ as places to pause, reflect and understand why they may be happening and let them guide, redirect or show me a problem that needs resolving.” Having a gratitude mindset strengthens my intuition so I can make decisions in a way that feels good to my spirit and live more wholeheartedly, she adds. Heels And Handshakes is an all-inclusive community dedicated to helping women in business and female business owners put their best “heel” forward. Shannen says it’s an organization made up of fun, passion-driven individuals focused on advocating and advancing women in all facets of hospitality, tourism, and business in Middle Tennessee. Heels And Handshakes is continuing to add value for their community by developing monthly networking opportunities such as “puppy yoga” and an awards luncheon hosted at City Winery. “Best of” awards were handed out and much love was felt. Members include but are not limited to restaurants, venues, hotels, planners, DMCS, meeting planners, florists, designers, bankers, CPA’s, entrepreneurs and City Lifestyle Publishers. Shannen says, “What sets us apart is our mantra, “Surround yourself with women who would mention your name in a room full of opportunities,” Nashville is growing and evolving, but we want to remain true to the collaborative spirit. We truly believe in collaboration over competition.” “Whether you’re in heels or flats, says Shannen, “You are valuable and we believe in you.”

Kirbee Miller
Founder of KiNiMi Kitchen
Some of Kirbee’s fondest memories are based from cooking and baking in kitchens. “I’d select a variety of cookbooks from my mother’s backer’s rack, find a quiet place, often behind the couch with a blanket, and just get lost in my own culinary world of imagination and possibilities,” she admits. Nashville has a rich culinary history and there’s a beautiful mixture of traditional Southern food, international cuisine and foods from all of the ‘transplant’ residents that have also made Nashville their home, Kirbee says. “My heart is in the kitchen, and I get such joy through sharing love and the opportunity to connect over a table full of delicious, flavorful food. There are few things better than the few seconds of contemplative silence that follows the first bite of food then the person expresses how they feel sometimes in words, and sometimes with an expressive gesture. Yep, that never gets old,” Kirbee assures. The strong sense of community and the commitment to collaboration over competition has been the best part of my entrepreneurial journey in Nashville, says Kirbee. “Food is a powerful connector and when prepared with intentions and served with grace, it provides a backdrop for real connection, where people do not have to ‘qualify’ to be a part of the experience,” she adds. “I often remind guests of my experiences, that they just need to be human and get hungry! That’s all they need to fit in. Through that freedom, people give themselves permission to have real, nourishing conversations.” One of Kirbee’s favorite quotes is by Joseph Campbell says: “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” And she says this has become the foundational motto for how she navigates life. “At the end of the day, I want my life and work to be of service and an example of what it looks like to live fully,” she says.

A PATH TO SUCCESS FROM HOMELESSNESS TO HAPPINESS

G IV IN G BAC K | ED U CATION
Women experiencing domestic violence often have to flee with very little money and few belongings. They often do so after years of abuse and risk everything for a chance for a better and safer life. Julie (a pseudonym) knows this well. She suffered for years, and coming from a troubling childhood, she felt like she didn’t deserve any better. “I didn't know how precious I was,” she says. “It was ingrained in me that people can do whatever they want to you.” Last year, Julie knew she had to leave -- this time for good. She left multiple times before, but her husband always managed to find her. “I just packed a bag. I left my cell phone, my credit cards. I had less than $300,” she says.
RESER A
Julie had a long journey ahead of her, and although he found her once, she managed to get away again. “I drove for hours; I didn't know what to do or where to go.” It was during this drive that she heard a woman call into a radio show about her abusive husband. The show’s host, who is from Tennessee, told the woman she needed to get away from him and that she mattered. “That's how I chose Tennessee,” says Julie. “I slept in my car for about two weeks and then I walked into the local police department. They got me into a shelter.” It was this shelter that introduced her to a path to success through Resera, a jewelry company based in Nashville. “I founded Resera, along with Alexis Cook, in 2017,” says Corbin Hooker. “I had this growing sensation that I needed to try to do something to help the homeless, and from day one, our heart has always been about this mission. The jewelry has been a means to work with women experiencing homelessness and survivors of domestic violence.” By partnering with other organizations, such as Community Care Fellowship, the YWCA and Renewal House, not only are these women given jobs, but they also learn many skills, such as wax injecting, molding, chaining and distribution. Resera also partners with financial literacy coaches and career counselors who come on-site to help the women navigate these issues. “Some women come in with a really clear idea of what their dream career is, and they can use this job as a stepping stone to stabilize, earn some money, develop some skills, and then go get that dream job,” says Corbin. “For others, they may come here and decide that this is their dream.” “My case manager at my first shelter told me she thought I would be a really good fit for Resera,” says Julie. “I had no jewelry-making skills whatsoever, and when you interview with Corbin, he totally understands that.” She was also able to get into another shelter, which offered her a lot more support than the first, including therapy. On Jan. 1, she went from being a maker (which is what they call the women at Resera) to the director of events. “I handle all

37
of our events and do all of our outside sales because that's my passion.” And thanks to her job at Resera, she moved into her own apartment on Jan. 7. “I wake up and I fall asleep in my blessing every day,” says Julie. “It’s where I feel safe.” She wants other women in her situation to know there is hope. “It's not going to be easy to leave and you’re going to be so scared,” she says. “But I believe you can do it -- you're worth it! You're going to start healing and you're going to start dreaming. And those dreams are going to come true – like mine.” Julie is a rockstar, says Corbin, and his dream is to grow Resera to support more women like her (he has helped more than 20 women so far). He also wants to partner with other organizations to incorporate similar models. “It's important to separate the trauma the women have been through and the person themselves,” he says. “You also have to recognize the legitimate barriers they face and come alongside them.” Each piece of Resera’s high-quality and beautiful jewelry comes with a story of the person who made it. Just wearing it is impactful. Resera.com

PAIGE PARKER’S EASYDRINKING BOURBON Nashville-Based, Female-Owned Happenstance Bourbon Is Approachable, Sleek New Option For Whiskey Aficionados ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY
In a world heavily dominated by men, Paige Parker’s Nashville-based Happenstance Whiskey brand offers something a little different. Happenstance’s motto focuses on "celebrating life’s moments that happen by chance," but the intention behind Paige's bourbon is obviously well-planned, with plenty of attention to detail. The sleek bottle design stands out on any restaurant bar shelf or home bar cart, with foil and noir finishes and modern lettering. Paige emphasizes Happenstance’s bottle design as equally as she did the bourbon blend. The Founders Edition straight bourbon whiskey goes down easily, with fused notes of vanilla, hazelnut, toasted oak, toffee and honey. It’s double-distilled, then barrel-aged to perfection. Paige says Happenstance aims to fill a void in the whiskey category — offering something equally approachable for those new to whiskey-drinking alongside seasoned professionals. Blended and bottled in Nashville, Happenstance Founder’s Edition Bourbon is 90 proof (45 percent ABV) and runs $55 for the 750mL bottle. It’s now available for distribution via Lipman Brothers, and the sleek, eye-catching bottle has been spotted in a few local restaurants and bars, such as Jane’s Hideaway, Bottle Cap, and EG&MC. Happenstance is also available for purchase on their website and in select Nashville liquor stores. Paige says her brand is also expanding to additional U.S. markets soon, so cheers to Happenstance as the femaleowned, Nashville brand makes a name for itself nationwide.

“We wanted to create a product that pays homage to the tradition of American bourbons that have come before us, but with an unexpected punch of today’s most sought-out flavors,” says Paige Parker. “Although we believe many great moments happen by chance, our premium bourbon is not one of them. At Happenstance, we’re raising a new generation of whiskey lovers who celebrate life’s little moments, so cheers to that!” HappenstanceWhiskey.com
