Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore both locally and globally. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. We hope that the destinations featured this month give you something to dream about visiting in the near future. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure and peace and sunshine.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STABILITY HERE AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD

Next time when cleaning out a closet and purging shoes and clothing, instead of throwing them out, donate them and change people’s lives for the better. “Those items are valuable,” says Rod Arnold, chief marketing officer for Soles4Souls. “Those pairs of shoes can turn into a meal for a family. They can turn into a brick that people can use to build their houses. They literally turn into income and help sustain people.” How does this magic happen? Since 2006, the nonprofit has been collecting new and used shoes and clothing to help people both locally and around the world. “We like to say that we turn shoes and clothing into opportunity, and that really comes down to a couple things,” he says. “It's providing relief to people in need and it's helping people fight poverty.”

Soles4Souls distributes new shoes and clothing to local people experiencing hardships and homelessness, and used shoes and clothing overseas to support entrepreneurship in impoverished countries. “Our new shoes and clothing come from an amazing group of brand partners, corporate partners, and retailers who donate some of their inventory.” Used shoes and clothing, he says, are mostly acquired from individuals, church groups, and other civic groups. They also have a partnership with DSW stores as a shoe drop-off site. “We collect millions of pairs of shoes every year that way,” he says. Rod recently returned from Honduras where he and his team interviewed people who are taking these used items and reselling them to create jobs and provide income. “We went down to visit with and document the stories of the entrepreneurs and the employees who are impacted by the used shoes that people donate,” he says. “There is so much poverty there and people really struggle to find work. We got to hear about how selling these shoes has transformed their ability to live and provide a stable life for their families.” These videos are then shared on their website. There are around 10 thrift stores in Honduras, he explains, that employ six to seven people each, and then there are people who are individual entrepreneurs. They live in small villages and take a sack of shoes and sell those to make a living. Adds Rod, “These people are working really hard and making their country better. Soles4Souls, with our partners, is really focused on giving people an opportunity for a better life.” Items are also shipped to Guatemala, Haiti, Moldova, Africa, the Philippines and other places. “Right now we're also raising funds to ship over a million dollars’ worth of goods over to the Ukraine refugees,” he says. “We really rely on our supporters,” says Rod. “We have a great group of donors who contribute on a regular basis. We also have business relationships with our nonprofit partners that help us pay for the costs of shipping and processing.” But, more help is always needed. There are several ways to support Soles4Souls. You can make a donation on its website, hold a shoe drive, or donate your own shoes and clothing. People are also needed to sort and pack up the clothing at its warehouse and distribution facility in Nashville. “We distribute over 5 million pairs of shoes and 5 million pieces of clothing every year, so there's a lot to be done,” he says. “We are so grateful to all our supporters. We're only able to do this work because of the thousands of people who are generous enough to donate their dollars and their used shoes and clothing.” Soles4Souls.org

At Home With The Archie Family LOCAL RESIDENTS MICHAEL AND CRYSTAL ARCHIE JUGGLE HOME COMMAND CENTER WITH ‘WE CAN ACHIEVE’ MOMENTUM

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARIEL RENAE

While a popular TV comedy drama used to declare 'Eight Is Enough,' one Nashville family ponders an inverse question in their home: 'Is Eight Really Enough?' Although the oldest of Crystal and Michael Archie's six children is the only one currently not living at home, another young man has been staying with them while he finishes college locally -- and they really enjoy having a full house. "My heart is family. Family is everything," ascribes Crystal, who recalls wanting to maintain her flexibility to be home while also desiring to supplement their family income after an injury concluded her husband's NFL running back career. Usher in Rodan+Fields, an American manufacturer and marketing company specializing in skincare products, 13 years ago. Crystal saw this at-home business opportunity as the answer to her prayers, but juggling family, business and life from the same

“There were down days, but I always saw the bigger picture, and I didn’t compare myself to others. I focused on my family’s journey, and it may have taken me a few years, but I got here, and I don’t have a single regret.” — Cr ystal Archie

residence came with its own challenges. "I remember when little fingers would come wiggling under the door when I ran to the bathroom for privacy to do business calls or presentations. My husband was amazing about supporting my work efforts, and eventually placed 'Do Not Enter' signs on doors when the kids got older," she says. "I can't say enough about how helpful Michael was, including cleaning the house and making lunches for the kids if I had to leave for meetings. He told me that he had gotten to pursue his dream with football and now it was time for me to get after my dream." The Archies had four biological children, then adopted two boys from Ethiopia, one 10 and one 17. "Most days, it seems like we always had enough kids here for a sports team or two at the house," recalls Crystal, who had her first baby when she was 18 years old and had four children total by the time she was 28. Operating a family that large takes many skills. She says she and Michael handled it by being "easy going," taking one day at a time, and encouraging their children to be determined and know in what they believe.

Yes, even their Goldendoodle, Arlo, has gotten in on the family action, by becoming a fluffy, online duo star. Vision boards also were a valuable tool for this family. Crystal says they sat with the kids and asked them about their own dreams, so those goals could be incorporated into future decisions. "We had an organic group approach, they saw their desires in the vision boards come to pass, and they grew up in the business, so they totally understand why we focused like we did. The skin care business was life-changing for our whole family," she adds. Michael, who played for the Oilers/ Tennessee Titans for four seasons, now trains young football players, a few who just started their NFL careers. While he still helps Crystal with her business, this stay-at-home mom turned CEO entrepreneur now manages a large team of independent consultants that has expanded globally into four countries, representing clinically proven dermatological products primarily for acne, sun damage and aging. “I was not an overnight success, but I chose to stick with it," recalls Crystal.

"There were down days, but I always saw the bigger picture, and I didn’t compare myself to others. I focused on my family's journey, and it may have taken me a few years, but I got here, and I don’t have a single regret." In her 'spare time' (wink), Crystal sandwiches in trips to Ethiopia, her home-away-from-home, to support her initiative called Treasured. In fact, she traveled there this January. Not only do the Archies sponsor children in Ethiopia, Crystal welcomes missionary donations to assist what's commonly referred to as the 'Trash Dump Community.' Through her Specifically Designed program, Crystal says they provide business and skill-set training to women in Africa, which creates the space and teaching tools for them to grow and have opportunities to secure long-term changes. "We're now partnering with 100 women there, teaching them skills and trades that empower them to take care of themselves and their families, and to get into better housing. For many, it's the first time in their lives that they're working and saving money," she says.

FAM ILY CA R E | L IFE + CULTURE

To that end, Crystal offers a special silver or 14-karat gold-plated necklace through her Treasured Shop for $59 each, with all sales proceeds funneled completely into assisting the estimated 200,000 women and children in need who live in Korah, Ethiopia. Additionally, Crystal owns an online boutique through which loungewear and curated accessories -- such as ruby red slippers, mirror trays, cosmetic bags, clutch bags, themed coffee mugs, blankets and wine glasses -- can be purchased. Crystal's secret to progress? "Never, ever, ever give up!" "Part of our legacy in teaching our kids how to handle and overcome life's challenges is to dream big and handle the day-to-day issues and decisions with a go-getting, enterprising attitude, and never let anyone have the power of stopping you from pursuing your goals. The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is a legacy of character and faith," she asserts. CrystalArchie.com

TAKE A RIDE ON THE MULTI AWARDWINNING MUSIC CITY ROLLIN’ JAMBOREE.

Searching for the best route to explore Nashville while laughing through a country music sing-along and comedy tour? Take a ride on the multi award-winning Music City Rollin’ Jamboree. Jenny Carson, owner and comedienne extraordinaire, makes one thing very clear. “It’s a show, not a party bus, but the show is a party. This is a tour of Nashville you aren’t going to find anyplace else.” A TripAdvisor Hall of Fame and Traveler’s Choice Award winner, and featured on Good Morning America and HGTV’s Flip or Flop, the Music City Rollin’ Jamboree celebrates its 10 year anniversary in 2022. After taking a yearand-a-half off during the pandemic, Jenny added musician Gil Grand, CCMA and GRAMMY winner, to the experience. Together they’ve created an alchemy that garners repeat business,

as well as referrals from previous satisfied customers. The idea for the Rollin’ Jamboree came to Jenny 10 years ago, when she and her grandparents took a ride on the Nash Trash Tour. All seats were sold out, and the pink bus ended up leaving a crowd of people behind. That crowd, and memories of the old Dolly Trolley that used to tour downtown, led her to an epiphany. “This is it. This is the time.” A week later, she purchased a retired school bus for $5,000, painted it, put in a sound system, and the Music City Rollin’ Jamboree was born. When asked what she would do if the business failed, she insisted that she knew “it was going to work, no matter what.” Ten years later, and she’s been proven right. “I wanted to make it so my grandparents could get on it – anyone’s grandparents – have a good time, and

leave knowing more about Nashville.” Back then, she drove the bus herself, and took a couple of years to develop the tour and find her rhythm. The gates opened once she started making people laugh. “You get on that bus, you put everything down, and you have a good time for 90 minutes. You enter as a stranger, you leave as a friend, and possibly as part of our family,” Jenny says. Her warmth and humor carry over once people disembark. She texts every rider to thank them personally, and they keep the jokes going. She even occasionally hears from participants when they run into fellow attendees at other Nashville landmarks. “It’s just special,” she says, “when strangers let their guards down with one another and no joke is off limits. We don’t make fun, we have fun.” And don’t forget the music. Jenny has high praise for Gil Grand. “People don’t expect the music to be as excellent as it is. He surprises people.” Gil leads a dual life. After spending time in his native Canada touring, performing his own award-winning music and traditional country shows, he then returns to Nashville, gets “on a bus, and starts acting goofy. There’s never a ride where something unexpected doesn’t happen.” He holds Jenny in high regard as well. “She commits to the jokes, and there’s nothing she doesn’t talk about. She makes the comedy happen. I’ve never seen anyone pull out the character aspects of people like she does.”

As the straight man with a quick wit, he relishes both the irreverent comedy and performing his music. “It’s a show, not a party. Many people come back, and it evolves the longer we work together.” As he says on the website, “I never realized how fulfilling it is to bring laughter to people. There’s something special that happens on the bus that I don’t get from the stage and that’s why I love it.” The same two drivers have been with Jenny for 10 years, which speaks to the warm atmosphere she and Gil create. The tours take place at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, for ages 21 and up. No bachelorette parties or large groups are permitted. “We will not tolerate disruptions,” Jenny says. “People are here for a show.” Soon, the Music City Rollin’ Jamboree might park the bus outside its own venue. “We’re looking into it,” says Gil, “trying to develop a stationary show in Nashville.” They’d like to create something like the old Johnny and June show, with country music and comedy. Recently, some visitors from across the pond took the tour. When asked how they found out about the experience, they said, “You are quite popular in England. Everyone recommends this show there!” Locals recommend it, too. So, take some time to see downtown with the Music City Rollin’ Jamboree, famous worldwide, and relish in the opportunity to laugh, sing, and leave all worries behind.

{I PROMISE, THEY ARE} FAUX-REAL BOUQUETS I have a secret! More than half of the flowers in my Spring tablescape are faux. Can you tell which ones are which? I’ll reveal one of them... all of my white tulips are faux! I am sure I’ve made all Florists cringe but in my humble opinion, when you mix faux flowers with real ones it really does something magical. Not only do faux look real next to real flowers but the whole bouquet lasts so much longer (I mean, half of them aren’t going to die anyway so I guess that’s pretty obvious). Mixing faux-real does a trick on the eye and I promise that you cannot tell the difference. There are, however, a lot of really bad obviously-faux flowers out there so follow these simple tips to get the best looking ones. FAUX FLOWER TIP #1: When hunting for the best faux flowers, look for the colors that you would see in nature. For example, in the natural world, flowers are often brightly colored but never, ever neon (save that for an outfit at your next 80’s party). FAUX FLOWER TIP #2: Choose faux flowers that have a natural looking shape as real flowers are rarely perfect and never identical. Stay away from faux flowers that are totally perfect. Perfect is not real life. FAUX FLOWER TIP #3: When choosing faux florals don’t forget to keep an eye on the stems and leaves. Go for a finish that is textured and never high gloss or smooth. Check out my faux floral highlight on instagram to see the difference @silvertoothfarmhome. FAUX FLOWER TIP #4: Unlike real flowers where you can use a floral frog to secure stems into place, faux flowers work much better if you use chicken wire inside your vase. Using chicken wire lets you place flowers exactly where you want them and they stay put. FAUX FLOWER TIP #5: When arranging faux flowers (even if you aren’t mixing with real flowers), always, always add water to the vase. Seeing the water is another eye trick that will make your faux flowers look completely real. AP R I L 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BE L L E M E A D E

48

LOCA L’S C H OICE | EN TERTAI NME NT

ARTICLE BY SHELBY MCLEOD

Music and motorcycles will collide May 19-22 at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch at Hurricane Mills for the fifth annual Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival (TMMR). Located just one hour west of Nashville on 400 acres, this one-of-a-kind event attracts music and motorcycle lovers far and wide, and offers something for many. “This is our first big event since the devastating flood in August, so we’re so happy to be able to do this. Memaw loves having everyone at her place,” says granddaughter to Loretta, Tayla Lynn. “After the flood, the TMMR folks were the first people to reach out and rally around us. It makes total sense that our first big event since the flood is with them.” Sponsored by Harley-Davidson, the lineup of events is full, and includes stunt shows, bike shows, field games, motorcycle racing plus more. The musical lineup is, of course, stacked with Billy Gibbons returning to headline May 20. Other acts for this four-day event include Ben and Noel Haggard, The Outlaws, Tim Montana, Bones Owens, Red Clay Strays, War Hippies, Tayla Lynn, who also will perform with her dad, (Loretta’s son) Ernie Lynn. Tayla Lynn will also host and emcee the event alongside Jay Allen. CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BE L L E M E A D E

This event continues to grow each year and to really get the full experience, TMMR invites attendees to camp on-site and soak up every part of the four-day bash, which Loretta’s Ranch has hosted for 40 years. Pack up RVs or bring a tent and stay awhile, because guests will be in good company with Loretta’s Ranch serving as the perfect backdrop for these talented musical acts and amazing motorcycle events. Glamping and camping will occur at TMMR. Cycle Source Magazine voted this event the 2021 Reader’s Choice winner. Catch a show and discover up-and-coming singer-songwriters from an array of genres with day parties by the creekside. The fun won't stop there as the talented line-up will rock well into the evening with nightly bonfires. It’s been a ride for Loretta Lynn’s Ranch and TMMR, and a full-circle moment to have them join forces yet again for this special event. Fans will get to enjoy music in one of the coolest spots in Tennessee and experience the very best from the motorcycle world. With shops and the Coal Miner’s Daughter Museum nearby, guests can explore the area and will have no problem staying entertained with a little bit of music and a whole lot of motorcycles. General admission TMMR tickets start at $35 each, with VIP passes at $179. Packages are available for recreational vehicles, tents and primitive camping. 8000 Tennessee Highway 13, Hurricane Mills info@motorcyclesandmusic.com MotorCyclesAndMusic.com
