March 2022 PUBLISHER

Home. It's meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
HOW ONE LOCAL MOM SURVIVED A DEVASTATING DIAGNOSIS
When award-winning children’s photographer Julie Newell felt a lump in her abdomen during July 2007 two weeks after the birth of her second child, Lachlan, she was of course concerned. But, because she was only 29 years old, doctors didn’t think it was anything too serious and attributed it at first to postpartum healing. “I had two healthy babies, two healthy pregnancies,” she says. “But through all of that I had unexplainable abdominal pain.” When other gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms arose, Julie says she was misdiagnosed with Crohn's disease. Later, when she developed a fever, her mother insisted she go for further GI testing. Due to her age, Julie had to fight to get a colonoscopy. “I didn't fit the model for colon cancer,” she says. “They used to call it an ‘old man’s’ cancer.'” She finally was approved for a colonoscopy, and on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, received the devastating results. “I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer and operated on the next morning,” she recalls. “The surgery was very successful. They removed the original colon tumor, plus 40 lymph nodes.” However, her ordeal was not yet over. During the surgery, five tumors also were spotted on her liver. “I did three rounds of standard chemotherapy for colon cancer, and then went to MD Anderson [Cancer Center] for my liver resection,” she says. “In January of 2008, all five tumors were removed. After that, I was given nine more rounds of adjuvant chemotherapy.”

In addition to traditional Western medicine, hopes, prayers and Eastern medicine also were incorporated into her treatment plan. Julie’s cancer journey, from first being diagnosed to receiving her last treatment, encompassed nine long and difficult months. Although she admits it was the hardest thing she's ever endured, she was grateful to be given her life back. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and friends,” she says. “My husband, Joey, was my rock. My mom and his mom took turns helping me with the baby and with Estelle, our almost 2-year-old daughter. My best friend came to cook and help out my family, and another friend picked me up every Friday to take me to chemotherapy. Other friends sat with me during chemotherapy if my mom couldn't be there.” She’s also grateful that before chemotherapy, she underwent fertility preservation. Years later, their now 8-year-old daughter, Vera, would be born. Three and a half years ago, Julie and her family moved to Nashville from Chicago. “We chose to come here to slow down and focus on raising our children in a family-focused environment,” she says. In addition to her husband and three children, their family includes four adorable fur babies. Today, Julie is 14 years cancer free, and is now on what’s called surveillance. “Typically, people who make it 10 years without a recurrence of colon cancer are considered cured,’’ she says. “Every year for 10

years I had to have a colonoscopy, and then after that, I was supposed to have one two years later.” Due to the pandemic, she ended up having to wait almost three years. “That gave me a bit of a scare, but I feel like things work out in ways they’re supposed to. That was the first colonoscopy I've ever had where they removed polyps. All of them were precancerous, and my life was saved once again. They told me if I had come the year before they may not have been able to find them all because they would have been too small. I would probably then have been told I wouldn’t need another one for five years.” She’s very open about sharing her story and helping others through "City Mom Goes South," her Instagram page. “People from all over the world reach out to me who either have someone they love going through colon cancer, or have colon cancer themselves. They say, ‘You make me believe that this isn't a death sentence.’” Julie’s advice to others: “If something doesn’t feel right in your GI tract, you need to find a GI doctor who will fight for you to help you get a colonoscopy. For me, colonoscopies have truly been lifesaving.” Note that March is Colonoscopy Awareness Month. I N L I KE A L I ON We have all heard the saying the March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. The Georgian Project is acting just like March. The wood and tile are flying with the trim work being completed and the tile being laid. Cabinets are waiting to be installed, and lighting is in boxes in the garage. “Now is when the project gets really fun,” says Joe Jennings, designer, “You can begin to see what the home is going to look like once the project is finished. It’s a huge difference when the drywall is up and the hardwood floors are in. You can really see it coming together.” Some of the exciting items that give the home that luxury feel begin with the trim work. For example, in the hallway to the bedrooms, we are adding cove lighting. First, we drop the crown molding about three inches from the ceiling. Next we add a special lighting strip that runs the entire length of the hallway, but is hidden by the dropped crown molding. When the lights are illuminated, it will reflect on the ceiling giving the hallway a barrel-shape feeling. The use of trim in unexpected ways is also taking the Georgian Project to the next level. For example, in the second bedroom, we are adding a decorative design on the wall made completely from wood trim. “Adding texture to a flat wall by including decorative trim adds dimension and interest to the room,” Joe says, “We will paint the decorative trim and the wall the same color as the crown molding which make an architectural statement instead of just an accent. We are also using tile in unexpected ways. One of the most unique elements is the mother of pearl tile applied to the ceiling of the powder room. Powder rooms are one of the most overlooked rooms in a home and often only considered functional. “I would spend more money in a powder room than you would expect, because the fit and finish of that room will be viewed by guests. It is designed only for them,” says Joe, “It is usually a smaller space, so you can use more luxurious finishes because you need less materials.” If you are loving the Georgian Project and want to read more about Joe Jennings and the renovation, go to www.readytosellnashville.com,

It was only a year ago that Jessica Zweig visited Nashville and fell fast in love. Now she has a new office space, the second abode to her multi seven-figure branding company, SimplyBe. Agency, which she founded in 2016 in her hometown of Chicago. Her new Nashville home is an enchanting white farmhouse, built in the 1800s, situated on 10 luxuriously historic acres that she and her husband are renting in Bellevue. She smells of rose with a hint of vanilla. Her energy lands like spring. Despite being a bestselling author, self-made millionaire, and one of the most Googled female entrepreneurs of the moment, Jessica almost certainly makes every person who crosses her path feel worthy and significant. Though it’s impossible to imagine, with her feline green eyes, kittenish style and celestial presence, she swears that, growing up, she was gawky and had a face full of acne. “I was insecure and all I wanted was to be accepted and cool. In the early days, before I became the woman I am now, it was my ultimate mission to find out how to be that,” Jessica says. In the years after earning her bachelors of fine arts degree in acting from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, she and a friend, both young enthusiasts of the Chicago fashion, food and nightlife scenes, founded an online lifestyle magazine, Cheeky Chicago, in 2008. Almost instantaneously, its fun-loving, witty combination of cosmopolitan flair and real talk spunk caught fire, especially amongst her 20-something counterparts. Which meant that gawky, uncool Jessica needed to step aside. A new and improved “It” girl persona would be running the show from now on. Before long, she found herself bumping elbows with celebrities and high rollers. Posing for photo ops at swanky social gatherings. Strolling through velvet ropes and V.I.P sections. Publishing viral blog posts with the same ease that most would write a simple grocery list. It was as though everything she touched swiftly turned to gold. She’d become the envy of her formerly awkward self. Or, had she? “For a while, the success of Cheeky validated me. It was exciting, and it gave me a sense of falsified ego. Because I’d never been cool. But, the truth is that, behind the scenes, my life turned into a mess,” Jessica says. Where there was no wifi connection and no cameras flashing, there was loneliness. Despite the magazine’s loyal following, she was financially broke, emotionally broken and physically exhausted. Though she was living in the city that had raised her, she felt a thousand miles away from home. Eventually, she and her business partner weren’t speaking. They were also smothering under mountains of debt. The facade was getting harder to uphold. How, she wondered, would she ever turn her light back on? It was in the summer of 2013. Her body was shutting down. Every time she caught a cold, a simple sniffle and a sore throat would spiral into a severe sinus infection and a migraine headache. While her stubborn will was hellbent on blazing forward, her body was throwing up stop signs. CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BE L L E M E A D E

At 32 years old, after many months of medical exams and prescriptions, she was forced to undergo an intensive sinus surgery. This meant she was to spend six to eight weeks staring at her apartment walls, swathed in piles of blankets, resting in a chokehold of anxiety and frustration. Desperate to reconnect with the world, one day she decided to throw on some clothes and venture across the street to a park to breathe fresh air. She positioned herself onto a grassy knoll, Indianstyle, taking in the balmy, cloudless June afternoon. Also fairly convinced that she was one thought away from a nervous breakdown. Maybe, she thought, she’d try meditating. “I’d never meditated in my life. I didn’t even know how,” she says, laughing. “But, I shut my eyes and turned my palms toward the sky. After a few minutes, I heard a voice--my voice, except it was much more sovereign and calm, say to me, ‘It’s okay. You’re allowed to rest. Just Be.’” She’d been hustling so hard to uphold the public persona she’d created--the one that was far more glamorous and charismatic than the Jessica she’d managed to run away from. But she couldn’t run anymore. “I’d been telling myself, ‘I have to keep feeding this machine. I have to get back to work. This is my entire identity,’” Jessica says.

Except, that day, pressed against the grass, alone, she realized it wasn’t. Breaking her meditation, she opened her eyes and found herself staring directly at a tattoo on her wrist. It was one she’d gotten eight years earlier, but it suddenly had new depth and life and nuance, or, perhaps, had finally revealed its supernatural meaning. In her own handwriting, it read, “SimplyBe.” It was as though 26 year-old Jessica had blasted out a memo of love and light into the ether–one that, though always visible to the eye, had been waiting for the most auspicious moment to meet the gaze of her future self, and in a strangely divine way, reveal the fullness of its message. “I saw the tattoo and understood its meaning for the first time. And, instantly, I knew that whatever I did next, it would be called ‘SimplyBe.’” There in the park, a seed was planted. And, a little more than two years later, Jessica founded her branding agency, SimplyBe, which blossomed into a garden of top tier clients, profits and accolades. Although, this time, it’s never been about notoriety. It’s about impact. “I needed to go through the fire and feel the burn of my mistakes in order to learn how to serve. I needed to live inauthentically so that I could grasp the power of authenticity. That’s the only way I could stand in authority and teach it to others,” Jessica says. In other words, she had to fumble in her relationship with money in order to learn the language of abundance. She had to chase all of the seductive things that proved to be fleeting and soul-sucking in order to discover what truly lit her up and motioned her down a pathway of contribution. She had to date all of the wrong guys who loved her in all of the wrong ways in order to learn the right ways to love herself. And Be loved. While it ended in a way that she was desperate to be freed from, Jessica wishes to be clear about something: “The truth is that my experience with Cheeky wasn’t all ego and celebrity-chasing. It was a meaningful time because it helped me find my talent and sense of volition. It was my first journey into entrepreneurship, and it forced me into a direction that led to the life I’m living today,” she says Today, SimplyBe. Agency employs 24 ambitious creatives, three of whom are in the new Nashville office, which opened in January. Last February, she released her first book, Be.: A No Bullsh*t Guide to Increasing Your Self Worth and Net Worth by Simply Being Yourself, which quickly landed at the No. 1 spot on the Amazon chart in the Women in Business New Releases category. Her podcast, SimplyBe. Podcast, is wildly successful, with featured guests like Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell, artist, writer and Instagram sensation Morgan Harper Nichols, and fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff. She confesses that many people, at least initially, misunderstand what she does, however. “SimplyBe. Agency is a personal branding company, yes. But, really, we’re a personal empowerment company. For example, people come into our offices and they’re like, ‘I want the logo. I want the website. I want the big following.’ And, sure, we do all of those things and more; we’re brilliant at them. But, most of all, we teach people how to be authentic, magnetic and in service to others.” So, then, what is the art of SimplyBe.ing? “To SimplyBe. is to own who you are, because that’s what makes you magical. It’s embracing your evolution. It’s understanding that you’re here to teach what you’re here to learn. And, mostly, it’s believing that, no matter what, you’ve got you and the Universe has got you,” she says. Jessica says she feels that her divine assignment is to help others wake up to their truth–the one that can only be found within. “I put myself out there in the world in a big, bright and shiny way because I understand that I have a finite amount of time to do my job, which I believe is to show others that every single person on this earth has the ability to make a profound impact. It doesn’t matter if you’re a barista or a bus driver or a CEO. Don’t take for granted your own power,” she says. She then adds, “And always remember that anytime someone throws sludge at you when you show up as your authentic self, it’s because they don’t know their own light. It’s not that they’re mad at your light; it’s that they’re unconscious of their own,” she says. Essentially, Jessica’s work is about inviting people to come back to themselves. It’s about moving away from the noise and letting yourself remember. So, how then, does Jessica come back home to herself? “My true medicine is solitude. I love taking baths. I love to turn on a beautiful piece of music, connect with Spirit and draw. I love storytelling through art. Truly, as much as I have to be ‘on’ and in front of an audience, I restore my energy reserves through alone time,” she says. And, most significantly, she loves burrowing inside the gentle pulse of her newfound respite. One ripe with Tennessee history, scenic charm, and peaceful landscape. When she visited Nashville last August for her book launch party, after having fallen in love with the property through a screen, it exceeded her expectations. Tucked in its woods, there’s an old graveyard and horse stables. She calls it her “magical place.” “The vibration of Chicago is high energy and kinetic, which is wonderful in its own way, but after my husband and I packed up our lives and our two dogs and decided to make ourselves at home here, surrounded by the vibration of creativity and nature, I found restoration. It’s teaching me how to have an even deeper relationship with myself,” Jessica says. Her most treasured corner of the sprawling estate? The front porch. “I get up every morning, pour myself a cup of coffee, step outside and listen to the birds chirp. I take in the sky and the air and the silence. And it’s just me, spending time with me. And that’s how I access the source of my own power. Me, just simply being.”

Fresh Twist On Traditional Interior Design KATE FIGLER ENJOYS MAKING ART AND DESIGN ACCESSIBLE TO CLIENTS
ARTICLE BY GENEVA MARESMA
Growing up in New England among an Italian-American family of entrepreneurs, Nashville-based interior designer, Kate Figler, has always lived in a world of vibrancy steeped in tradition. Her grandfather was a concert pianist who opened a restaurant after retiring. He married his love for music with the dining experience and would play piano for the diners each evening— a local “piano man.” Later, the family business expanded to include an inn and a gift shop that Kate’s mother and grandmother operated. “We ate dinner at the restaurant every night, and after dinner, my sister and I would greet guests. Each evening was a family affair of our family serving our guests. Those years were the beginning of my customer service training. Design also became a normal part of my life, as I watched my mom and grandmother select tapestries, furniture and decor for the inn and gift shop,” she says.

“Design also became a normal part of my life, as I watched my mom and grandmother select tapestries, furniture and decor for the inn and gift shop.” — Kate Figler
Kate initially pursued a career in elementary education, but when Kate and her husband started their family and purchased a home to renovate and settle their young family, she had a change of heart, realizing that designing was her dream, and Kate Figler Interiors was born. Starting with projects for personal friends, Kate built her portfolio and grew her word-of-mouth referrals. Networking and social media channels also helped her establish her name as a sought-after Nashville designer, she adds. Kate’s rich life experiences laid the groundwork for a joy-filled career, and she credits her early years with teaching her the values of hard work and creating client experiences. Her role as a teacher paved the way to listen to, educate and guide her clients. Specializing in fresh perspectives on traditional interiors, she sees her life and career journeys much like her designs — layers of color, patterns and texture that combine to create a unique story. Those who embrace colors and patterns, wish to fill their homes with meaningful items, and appreciate livable home designs likely will appreciate Kate’s eye for timeless and inviting designs. While a white couch might look beautiful, for those with children, pets, or an affinity for

red wine, it might not be the most functional. Kate says she enjoys helping her clients find beautiful pieces that fit their real lives. She also enjoys uncovering items with memories attached to them and finding ways to showcase them. For example, rather than have a passed-down china pattern on a shelf, she might hang the plates, allowing families to connect with cherished people and memories. While some of Kate’s designs capture elements of the past, others move people toward their futures. Clients who are empty-nesters, for example, may want to reimagine their forever home. Kate works with these clients to repurpose or reclaim home spaces. “I really love helping people, and I care about what they want. My firm takes on large residential design projects like new construction and gut renovations as well as smaller projects like single rooms. If a project speaks to me creatively, I love making art and design accessible to the client,” she says. Kate says she feels immensely fortunate to be invited into people’s homes and hopes to bring joy to more clients’ lives this year through her signature style of fresh, refined, traditional and livable designs. 203.313.2627 KateFiglerInteriors.com

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in
New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families.
CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach
is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.
If you’re looking for a yummy signature cocktail, I’ve fallen in love with the Plume & Petal range of mid-proof premium infused vodkas. Each of their lemon, peach and cucumber flavors is naturally infused and layered with essences like white tea and elderflower and just a hint of honey for sweetness, so the taste is sophisticated and bespoke.
CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEWEST COOKBOOK AND WHAT CAN WE GET EXCITED ABOUT? DO: In “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss
Food To Celebrate Eating Clean” I share the techniques I’ve used to get my mind, energy and body back on track after each pregnancy or anytime I’ve needed to reboot good habits—without ever losing the joy of cooking, the fun of mealtime and the stress-free pleasure of doing it intuitively. “Eat Your Heart Out” is a collection of 150 recipes free from gluten and refined sugar that have consistently helped me lose weight without ever disappointing my demanding tastebuds—or making healthy eating feel like a job I don’t need or want.
CL: IN ADDITION TO YOUR COOKBOOK, WHAT ARE SOME HOUSE-WARMING OR DINNER HOST GIFT SUGGESTIONS? DO: I find a little gift basket of some of my favor-
ite seasoning essentials goes a long way and feels personal and unique. I’ll add things like a favorite herbal tea like the Plain- Rooibos Passionfruit, some delicious Kosterina or Fancy Peasant olive oil, Westbourne Togarashi Crunch (such as an incredible saltycrispy pairing with buttery togarashi spiced chex cereal, toasty nuts, and a little bit of sweet to balance the spice! It’s the perfect bar snack FYI), Daphnis & Chloe herbs and spices (love their quality and pretty glass jars!), Gjelina Honey Trio, Maldon Flaky Smoked Sea Salt, Primo Botanica Tree Hugger Chaga Chocolate, Olive & Linen Turkish Hand Towels…the list goes on and on! With more than 670k Instagram followers, Daphne Oz is an Emmy Award-winning television host, New York Times-bestselling author, chef, and entrepreneur focused on innovation in food and beverage, beauty, wellness, fashion and media.
