SHAWN BOOTH SHARES WHAT OVERNIGHT STARDOM CAN DO AND HOW HE HANDLED IT
N EW BEGI N N I NGS When all the Christmas decorations come down, it is the perfect opportunity for a homeowner to rethink their current design. As you are cleaning up, you have the chance to think about what could be some inexpensive additions or changes that could revitalize not only the look of your home, but also how you feel about it. That can lead to many options from preparing your house for guests to maybe selling it and finding a new place to live. An easy and inexpensive change can be as simple as a new paint color or a change of accessories. That change can start with editing. Editing begins with a good cleaning that leads to removing some of the clutter that has built up over the last year. A good rule of thumb for editing is the Rule of Three. The Rule of Three says that a surface should have no more than three items on it to keep that clean, noncluttered look. The accessories that you select should be timeless and not follow a trend. When you are placing accessories on a surface, always think about the scale of the items. In the Rule of Three there should be a small, medium and large piece to achieve the right balance. You can also utilize accessories of the same size to achieve symmetry, but you have to be careful or it can put everything on the same plane, which can be boring. When Joe Jennings is designing a house, he tries to select colors that are harmonious throughout the house.
“When you choose
accessories throughout the house that compliment each other, you can move them from room to room, and change the overall look of your design,” says Joe. “At the same time, it’s not monochromatic or boring.” At the Georgian Project, it’s all about new beginnings. It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love but don't forget to have fun too. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

HEALING WITH HEARTFELT RESOLVE LOCAL MIND AND BODY WELLNESS CENTER WANTS PATIENTS TO THRIVE

While it's 100% wonderful to heal physically, the medical team at Thrive Wellness in Brentwood also want to help their patients heal mentally. Dr. Glen Blaschke, founder and chief medical officer of Thrive Wellness, says he anchors all customized treatments with evidence-based medicine. He also applies his 23 years of emergency medicine experience during consultations with Thrive clients. "We have a strong corporate and clinical team at Thrive that has patient care at the forefront of all decisions," he adds. Early in his college education, Dr. Blaschke discovered he loved chemistry. He then became a research assistant to a professor

who studied heart attacks. Eventually, he received a grant from the Alzheimer's Foundation to study how humans create and store memories. Along the way, he met and collaborated with doctors who worked with stroke patients. It was all his various medical experiences combined that made him a well-rounded emergency room physician. "Oftentimes, a person's sympathetic nerve system, which connects the internal organs to the brain by spinal nerves, gets crossed with the pain nervous system. That can lead to a severe and chronic pain syndrome in a certain area," he explains. The center opened just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the staff typically use innovative combinations of medicines, NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and IV vitamin treatments to assist patients. NAD is a coenzyme found in all living cells and has even been called an anti-aging molecule because of the many important roles it plays in promoting health and prolonging lifespan. Thrive Wellness patients come to the clinic to treat a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, migraines, obsessive-compulsive disorder, cancer pain, fatigue, vitamin optimization, brain health, weight management, hormonal rebalancing and immunity recovery. Dr. Blaschke says he's treated thousands of patients throughout his career with ketamine, which is a drug for treatment-resistant depression. The FDA approved ketamine as an anesthetic for people in 1970. Doctors then developed a protocol for medically supervised use that has helped people who don’t get relief from other medications related to debilitating depression and suicidal tendencies. Ketamine allows the brain and peripheral nerves to reorganize and return to their original functions, he states. "Ketamine treatment allows us to eliminate the symptoms of many conditions that lead to being labeled addicted, which in turn allows people to change their views toward addiction. It essentially allows a person to disassociate and move bad things [experiences, memories] out of the brain. The brain heals through this process," says Dr. Blaschke. thing, creates boundaries, and you can choose through therapy how you're going to react to it. It takes away its ability to invade your life." He says everyone employed at the clinic has had ketamine therapy. "So we know what it does, how it feels and how it affects people so we can describe it to clients. We're 90% successful through patient treatments." Since the pandemic, he says they've been focused more on mental health, especially with the success of patient care treatments that consolidate physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and psychotherapists as a team. "During the pandemic, we also treated the military for free, particularly ones that had had traumatic events overseas. We helped them through their PTSD," he adds. "Your heart just goes, wow, we're doing something with such purpose." He says they also apply a monitoring and surveying system with clients, texting them every day. Additionally, they recently added aesthetics services for skin rejuvenation and natural beauty, as potential post-therapy steps for clients. "This to help people feel good on the outside, too," says the doctor. They also offer lifestyle optimization, such as genetic and lab testing or testosterone therapy. In other cases, for example, the Thrive Wellnes team say they've been able to increase mobility for people dealing with Parkinson's disease, to assist people with cravings for opioids or to alleviate symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Dr. Blaschke graduated from Texas State University and completed his doctorate and surgery internship at Baylor College of Medicine. He finished his training in emergency medicine, serving as chief resident at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He's a diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has his American Board of Emergency Certification in Emergency Medicine. 5400 Maryland Way, Suite 100, Brentwood Office Hours: Mondays through Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 615.880.9566 ThriveWellnessGroups.com

HEALTH AND BEAUTY COMES IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

Many people thank a boom during the 1960s in Nashville’s health care industry for health-realted companies working together and making the Music City their hub. Associated companies reportedly contribute an estimated $38.8 billion-plus and 250,000 jobs annually into the region. In addition to routine health care, residents can receive expert care for specific medical needs as well -- which helps with people’s desires to look great at any and all ages.

Dr. Don Griffin is a local, board-certified plastic surgeon committed to helping patients enhance and maintain their own unique beauty. He's the founder of Nashville Cosmetic Surgery, a surgery practice specializing in procedures of the face, breast and body, as well as nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. "Along with our highly qualified team of providers, we use both surgical and nonsurgical techniques to help our patients achieve the best outcomes with a focus on natural-looking results," he assures. He says it's an exciting time in the field of aesthetic medicine with so many new technologies available to help address the issues of aging and beauty. "Aging is a normal part of life, but we can decide upon and redefine the concept of 'aging gracefully.' Our job is to cut through the noise in this industry for our patients and provide treatments with proven scientific results and patient safety; it's always my first priority." Nashville Cosmetic Surgery plastic surgery services are for both men and women. Nonsurgical treatment options at the practice include fillers and laser treatments supported by skilled nurse injectors, laser technicians and aestheticians. "I was trained in general surgery first and continued training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, and I love what I do. But there are times when surgery isn't appropriate or can't address the issue. I enjoy the process of weaving together
a solution that fits each patient. No two patients are exactly alike, so neither are my surgical plans. My goal is always to combine both surgical and nonsurgical treatments to achieve a beautiful and natural-looking outcome for each patient. I appreciate the trust that my patients place in me and my team and I love getting to take part in the journey with each of them," says this careful physician. Giving back is one of Dr. Griffin's priorities. He volunteers at the Faith Family Medical Clinic, caring for uninsured patients with plastic and reconstructive surgery needs. He’s also a die-hard hockey fan and was the original plastic surgeon for the Nashville Predators for 10 years. "While there's no one perfect formula for what makes a person beautiful, the concepts of natural, healthy and confident are always part of the equation. Most patients in our practice are seeking subtle and natural improvements to their appearance and that's what we provide. If we've done our job well, you can expect your friends and acquaintances to notice an improvement without knowing exactly what you had done," says Dr. Griffin. 4322 Harding Pike #314 Located on the third floor of the Hill Center Belle Meade 615.321.1003 NashvilleCosmeticSurgery.com CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Kevin Malloy ROGER STARNER JONES JR., M.D. Private, discrete concierge acute medical detox and outpatient psychiatry services are provided by Belle Meade AMP/Nashville Addiction Recovery. Roger Starner Jones Jr., M.D., is a board-certified emergency and addiction medicine physician who founded this health care company with his business partner, Kevin Malloy, a former Division 1 college athlete and Wall Street hedge fund trader. The two provide a “no judgment zone” in private residences and luxury hotel suites for patients receiving treatment for alcohol or drug addictions, depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders. “We’re providing advanced medicines, therapies and recovery strategies while adding the power of augmented artificial intelligence and pharmacogenomics to produce a new path forward in spiritual, physical and mental wellness,” says Kevin. He says individual cases are associated with a spectrum of factors, including pandemic fatigue, mood disorders, seasonal depression, trauma, divorces, untreated post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, grief reactions to deaths, substance use disorders, insomnia, gambling issues, sexual addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorder and recreational alcohol use. Dr. Jones has treated more than 50,000 patients and detoxed more than 1,000 during his career. “Often, our patients are afraid to ask for help. Many people are reluctant to go to a brick-and-mortar location to detox, and don’t want anyone to know they are struggling,” says Dr. Jones, who adds that their success rate ranges from 80-90% of those treated.
With a goal of customized treatments, he says they provide patients with a dedicated physician to develop a personalized treatment plan for their specific needs. “Patients who seek to manage anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder have the best chance of improvement when they have regular follow-up with the same physician who truly knows their medical history and current medication regimen,” he adds. They also work with families to coordinate interventions and help convince users that treatment is the right answer. Their therapy treatments typically last five to 14 days. “Most patients feel better during the first few hours,” says Dr. Jones, who is a graduate of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The practice offers comprehensive mental health evaluations. Other outpatient elements incorporated into their medical services are prescription refills, IV therapy, fitness routines, yoga, music, nutrition, in-home sessions, in-office or telehealth services. Kevin says every household has its own issues. “The lifestyle of Americans has changed. The party atmosphere starts in high school, ignites in college and continues throughout adulthood. Legalization of marijuana and a ‘rosé all day’ attitude affects Americans in different ways. I believe all people are just one person away from a friend or loved one with addiction.” 4515 Harding Pike Suite 326, Belle Meade Open 24 hours 615.753.7966 BelleMeadeAMP.com NashvilleAddictionRecovery.com JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Church & Union Owners Hope Other Nashville Restaurants Join New Initiative

G IV IN G B AC K | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Patrick Whalen, 5th Street Group CEO
One Nashville restaurant helps balance wage gaps between front-of-house and back-of-house employees through a new initiative called "Tip The Kitchen." Fresh to the Nashville restaurant scene as of September 2021, Church & Union Nashville managers are challenging the industry standard of only tipping servers by adding a second tip line to guest checks as part of their Tip the Kitchen initiative. Guests voluntarily can leave a gratuity for essential back-of-kitchen staff not typically seen during dining, such as kitchen managers, prep cooks, sous chefs, line cooks, pastry chefs, kitchen callers and dishwashers. The full amount of guest-donated money goes directly to the employees. In addition to tips left by guests for the back-of-house, Church & Union Nashville matches that amount up to $500 a night. Church & Union is one of multiple restaurants owned and operated by Charlotte-based, 5th Street Group. Patrick Whalen, 5th Street Group owner, says the goal of their new effort is to make a living wage a reality for all employees working in their dining establishments. He says he also wants his employees to be happy and feel valued. "Based on average work weeks before the pandemic, a restaurant employee may only make about $22,000 per year. That's living below the U.S. poverty line. When the volume of diners picked back up rafter the initial pandemic shutdowns, we realized there was a staffing crisis. Restaurant employees were being asked to come back to typical hourly wages that were unsustainable to begin with," recalls Patrick. "We didn't want to raise menu prices, and we operate overall on thin margins. Raising per-hour wages by a small amount seemed like a self-defeating approach, like we'd just be treating symptoms rather than solving the challenge."
Then a firsthand development hit Patrick's awareness hard: an employee asked about a possible loan to buy personal groceries. "I felt physically ill thinking that one of our employees may not have enough to eat. I couldn't live with that," he remembers. Patrick and his managers brainstormed how to get more money into the pool for their back-of-the-kitchen crews, with the objective to hopefully increase those employees' annual salaries by $15,000 to $20,000 per year. "We're sharing in this increase, and I'd like to help every employee get to middle class wages. It's been a game changer. Out of the company's 315-plus employees, about half of them work in the kitchen," he says. Since starting the initiative in April by explaining the program on menus, Patrick says they've noticed a more productive work environment and reduced turnover. Specifically, after being open for 15 days, the kitchen staff at Church & Union Nashville had received $16,000-plus in tips for the kitchen staffers, he says. More than $817,245 companywide has gone to the kitchen staff since they launched the initiative earlier this year, Patrick adds. "We project the tally will be at a million dollars by mid-January." 5th Street Group employees who qualify for Tip The Kitchen are those making less than $70,000 per year. In the spirit of 'partnering' with diners, Patrick is publicly transparent about the status of the initiative by posting the data and financial contributions on the company's social media. He also posts the company's sales information. At press time, 20.7 percent of guests were participating in the optional kitchen effort, with an average of an additional $63 per shift awarded to each kitchen staffer. "We hope this action brings insight and compassion into the mix, and that more Nashville restaurants will join

“We’re sharing in this increase, and I’d like to help every employee get to middle class wages. It’s been a game changer. Out of the company’s 315-plus employees, about half of them work in the kitchen,” he says.
this unique initiative to change the way tipping can support every employee supporting restaurants. Having said that, we also believe a kitchen gratuity should only be awarded for experiences that are worthy, so we work together as a team to create great meal services," he says. Patrick shares that his main, underlying reason for launching Tip The Kitchen is because he would like the restaurant business to be a viable career for all who especially desire and enjoy working in the hospitality sector.

Pulling Back A TV Curtain ‘BACHELOR NATION’ FAV SHAWN BOOTH SHARES WHAT OVERNIGHT STARDOM CAN DO AND HOW HE HANDLED IT
He fell into Nashville on a whim, in a similar way that he’d one day fall into being known as a reality television sensation. “A few friends and I visited from Connecticut, we saw the exciting things it had to offer, and all of its lovely women. I got into a fling and decided, hey, why not make this great city my home,” says Shawn Booth, 34, a native of Windsor Locks, Connecticut. This is the part where one might assume that “the rest is history,” but that would be among the greatest underestimations of the century. In the years that followed, Shawn’s life would take a cinematic turn that he never could’ve predicted. In 2015, he appeared on Season 11 of ABC’s "The Bachelorette," instantaneously swapping sparks with the show’s leading lady, Kaitlyn

Bristowe, in front of all of America. Which is also to say that he was tossed, full-speed, into a frenetic pulse of life–one that was completely foreign to him. In what he says felt like the snap of a finger, he went from being what he calls “a regular guy,” working 9 to 5, to a reality TV phenomenon and red-hot topic of conversation among suburban housewives. Suddenly, every Monday night, 10 million people were curling up in front of their screens to gasp and shrill over every amorous frame of his budding relationship. Suddenly, to the world, he’d become fascinating in ways that no one had ever considered him to be fascinating before. He was being interviewed on the "Jimmy Kimmel Show," "Good Morning America" and "Entertainment Tonight." “Inside, I was still the small-town kid from Connecticut. Being thrown into that spotlight, and feeling like you have to live for your audience, I realized how it might cause a person to lose sight of who they are,” Shawn says. Precious moments in time have become performances. From meals to romantic milestones, nearly everything is documented. Many people are addicted to watching the private lives of others unfold, and Shawn has some not-so-shiny thoughts about it. “It was strange to see how differently people were treating me. It was fascinating, but also sort of confusing. My life was no more important after being on TV than it had been before,” Shawn says. He adds, “I never felt like I’d done anything to gain so much exposure–other than just show up on their TV screen, so I promised myself from the beginning that I wouldn’t let the experience define me or change me. And I’m proud to say I haven’t.” By the end of the season, Shawn had been selected as the winner, and was shown kneeling on one knee to propose to Kaitlyn, presenting a blindingly extravagant masterpiece of a diamond ring. Instantly, America swooned–falling even harder in love with their love. Except, though the couple would remain intact for three more years, they didn’t exactly ride off into the sunset together. Shawn says that, in the aftermath of the show, he shuffled through nearly every emotion possible – many of them unpleasant. “It was a great time in many ways, but it was also a pretty dark time, too. I felt like my public relationship had become my identity,” he says. Shawn says his sudden relevance solidified for him that he needed to better value his true friendships, the people who knew him as Shawn, not as the guy on TV who was engaged to Kaitlyn. “The craziness of becoming so known made me more appreciative of those who genuinely value and support me, and cautious of those who might not,” he says. So, then, what was it like to have his relationship fall apart in front of the world?
38
B ACK STAGE | EN TERTA INME NT
Shawn says it was exceedingly tough, beyond the obvious ways: "Because you’re not just processing your own emotions and you’re not just processing your partner’s; you’re also being met with a storm of emotionally drenched, severed expectations from people you’ve never met and probably never will." Break-ups are disenchanting enough in private, but when there’s a limelight shining over you, and you spot your face splattered across magazine racks, punctuated by headlines that speculate about the nuances of what went wrong, while standing in line at the grocery store, merely trying to buy yourself dinner, it can land a bit violating. “I was getting hundreds of messages from people who seemed so crushed, because they loved our relationship, or, at least, their view of our relationship. They’d tell me that they were crying and grieving. I didn't want to disappoint the people who’d supported us for so long, but it was hard to digest,” Shawn says. To keep his emotional footing, Shawn hurled himself into entrepreneurship, investing time, energy and sweat into his new business, BoothCamp Gym, located in SoBro, on the edge of The Gulch. “I knew that if I could turn my focus toward other people, and if I could channel my energy into helping others achieve their fitness goals, and feel amazing about themselves, it would help me move past what I was going through,” says Shawn. As for his relationship with his own far-reaching presence, Shawn says he enjoys connecting with people all over the world, and definitely at his gym, but that he mostly finds social media to be poisonous. “I force myself to put my phone down, as much as possible. I think social media can be a huge mental health threat. It’s a world of comparisons, highlight reels and illusions. It’s scary because sometimes it’s hard to know who someone really is,” he says. And, as for dating, Shawn says he’s done quite a bit of that over the past few years, but has avoided going public with any relationship. Watchful eyes put unimaginable pressure on romantic entanglements, and that’s a realm he’s not ready to step back into. Though, with the right person, he hopes it’ll be worth sharing with the world, though maybe in a more contained fashion. “You shouldn’t feel like you have to put on a show for anybody, especially about your relationship,” he says He’s also shy. “I’m incredibly introverted–my friend recently described me as ‘socially hesitant.’ I sometimes worry that fans of the show assume I don’t want to talk to them or take a picture with them when they see me, but that’s not the case. I’m honestly just extremely shy,” he says. So, "Bachelor" fans, it’s probably a safe bet that you won’t be seeing any pictures of him canoodling with a sexy love interest anytime soon. But do expect to see pictures of another special someone: his dog, Walter,
a golden retriever, who snoozed just feet away from him throughout the entirety of our conversation. Their love story rivals anything you may have ever seen unfold in a rose ceremony, though it started in a way that could’ve been so tragic. Shuffling back to the days before reality show stardom was in his orbit, shortly after graduating from Keene State College, where he’d played soccer, Shawn was in a near-fatal car accident. He spent the several months that followed recovering in a hospital bed. “I got hit in the driver’s side by a kid who was going 70 miles an hour. My jeep flipped six or seven times, and I thought I was going to die. That time of recovery was also mentally challenging, especially considering that I’m an athlete who’s been active my whole life,” he says. After being discharged from the hospital, Shawn set his focus on fulfilling a dream he’d held for a long time: owning a golden retriever. When he found the dog, who he named Tucker, his paperwork revealed that he’d been delivered to Connecticut on the same day as Shawn’s accident. “Tucker stayed with me through every high and low, big moves and major career changes. He was my partner in crime and the greatest thing that ever happened to me,” he says. Sadly, at the dawn of quarantine, in the midst of so much uncertainty and heaviness, shortly after being forced to padlock his business’s doors, Shawn was also had to have Tucker euthanized. “When I lost him, it sent me into the darkest place. But, not long after, I found Walter, who I learned was born within hours of Tucker passing. It was wild and so meant to be. He’s been my closest buddy ever since,” Shawn says. So, then, what’s next for the television paramour? His exploding business, BoothCamp, has on-demand personal training options and a fresh app, along with group classes and locations that are constantly in development. He also plans to exercise his fondness for Nashville by going full-speed into selling real estate. “I actually had my real estate license since before I ever went on the show, though things got so hectic that I couldn’t do anything with it,” he says. He adds, “But, now? Even though I never thought I’d have a public presence, I feel like it’s something positive I can do with it now. Especially in a thriving city I’ve grown to love.”

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 44
T R E N D SE T T E R | FITN ESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

Creating Healthy, Happy And Efficient
Workforce
The Right Tools For The Job

During what is being called “The Great Resignation," companies are losing employees at an alarming rate. People are realizing, after working from home and having more autonomy over their schedules, that the way they were working before was not in the best interest of their mental health and happiness. So, how can employers hold onto their employees, while making their work environments healthier and more productive? “Obviously, the physical side effects of stress are terrible for the individual, but they are also terrible for the business,” says Elizabeth Moore, cofounder, along with Ashley Brook James, of TRILUNA. “Stress directly impacts the bottom line. Estimates on the cost of stress-related illnesses to businesses are in the billions annually.” There are three major components to burnout, she explains. The first is exhaustion, the second is cynicism, and the third is reduced professional efficacy. Elizabeth and Ashley have personally experienced all of these components. Both worked in high-pressure careers for many years, and over time became burnt out. “Ashley had debilitating month-long migraines,” says Elizabeth. “I have struggled with anxiety all my life, and it got to the point where I was having panic attacks every day. My anxiety manifests in digestive issues and I was even having heart palpitations. We were both miserable and physically sick.” The two quit their jobs and decided to team up to help others who may be experiencing the same issues, and TRILUNA (originally TRILUNA Wellness), was founded in 2018. (They recently rebranded and dropped the “wellness” part of their name. They share they came to realize that most people equate “wellness” with weight loss and outer beauty, while their focus is on inner health and mental wellness.) “We started the business doing a lot of in-person events for the community, but when COVID hit, we had to pivot very quickly,” she says. “Then, we started to see an increase in requests from corporations to do online workshops. And that just kept growing and we decided that was the direction we wanted to go in.”

The two start with companies or departments leadership to discover the culture in the workplace and assist management with creating solutions that will result in happier, healthier and more productive employees. The initial 30-minute consultation is free of charge. “We provide stress management and burnout prevention workshops, and have one class that has been expanded out into a series – which we have broken up into three modules,” says Elizabeth. Most of TRILUNA’s workshops are virtual, but if a company is local, they can be done in-person. They also provide stress management boxes, which are filled with small batch and handmade items that aid in reducing everyday stressors and just make people smile. “We also hold intensive corporate retreats where companies can hire us to

come in for a weekend and we will do a deep dive into everything,” she says. Instead of one-to-one training, TRILUNA always works with groups within companies. “Wellness must be community care as well as self-care,” says Elizabeth. “It is really difficult to be a healthy individual in a sick environment. When we do stress management, we have to consider the context of the organization, the culture, and what’s going on inside that company. “We can help an individual deal with the stress in his or her body, but the context of community helps to deal with the stressors. If we can give individuals the tools to deal with the physical stress and at the same time give the company the awareness of the stressors, then we have done our job. We are not there to tell people what they should do. We’re there to equip them with tools so they can take care of
their well-being in the way that best suits their life.” Elizabeth and Ashley say they know what they’re doing is working. “We’ve really been able to change the way people think and talk about mental health inside an organization,” says Elizabeth. “We are cracking open this veneer of professionalism that keeps everyone from talking about what’s really going on and it has been so powerful. We know we are doing our job when one employee says to another, ‘Wow, I didn’t know you were also feeling that way.’ They realize they’re not alone.” One employee remarked that she hoped they realized that what they are doing is saving lives. “And that’s why we do this,” says Elizabeth. “It is truly an honor to get to do this work.” TrilunaWellness.com
