LIFESTYLE LETTER
December Holidays and Giving The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

Easing Trauma When Transitioning Into Foster Care
14
G I V IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
Most people have never heard of “removal day,” but in the world of foster care, it’s usually one of the most traumatic days of a child’s life. “When I heard that a child was removed, I always thought, ‘Well, that's a good thing’,” says Ronda Paulson from Elizabethton. “They're going to be safe. But, it's also the hardest day for them.” When she and her husband, Corey, who were college sweethearts, became foster parents in 2014, it opened their eyes to the reality of this situation. She says to imagine, as a child, going to school one morning and then that afternoon, as you are about to leave, being greeted by your principal, your guidance counselor and a case worker and told you cannot go home. Even though that child’s home life may be chaotic and unhealthy, that’s all he or she knows. “All of a sudden you don't know where mom is,” says Ronda. “You love mama; it doesn't matter what she’s done. You want to go to your home. It doesn't matter what the conditions are. You may have pets that you're wanting to see. All of your possessions are there. Oftentimes, most children enter foster care with nothing, truly nothing.” Their first foster child was a 9-month-old red-headed baby boy named Isaiah. Because their son, Mac, was 9 years old and daughter, Sophie, was 12, they didn’t have any baby items in the house. “He literally had an outfit that didn't fit and a roach-infested diaper bag,” she says. The more Ronda learned about the foster care system, the harder it became to not do more. The child welfare system, she says, is struggling. There are not enough foster parents or facilities, so when removed, these kids wait for placement in an office.
Recalls Ronda, “I had a moment with God and I heard him say, ‘These are my children, what are you going to do?’ At first I told Him, no. I'm a cheer and dance coach; I have two children. But I felt like every step of the way, He was pursuing me.” Eventually, says Ronda, she just couldn't say no anymore. “We created Isaiah 117 House as a nonprofit in February of 2017, and we opened our very first home in June of 2018 in Elizabethton.” Today, there are 11 Isaiah 117 homes in operation in eight states, with another 13 in construction, and many more to come. So far, the nonprofit has served more than 3,000 children. “They’re hungry, they're tired, they're confused and sad, and they're convinced that they've done something wrong,” she says. “What we do is we step in, and instead of waiting in a sterile office for hours, they come to a home with big, fluffy furniture. If they’re hungry, we've got a fully stocked kitchen. And if they want to take a bath, we've got bubble baths and Elmo bath toys. Anything they need, we provide: new shoes, new shirts, new pants, new backpacks, new pillows, new blankets, new stuffed animals. Everything is new.” Pre-COVID, a child's stay was anywhere from eight to 12 hours; now, it’s closer to 48. The number of children in a home varies depending on needs and the ages and sex of the children. “We want to keep our ministry focus very personal, very intimate, so usually our homes only have about five or six children at a time. Our goal is to reduce trauma for these children. We set out to lavish love on them on their hardest day

“If they’re hungry, we’ve got a fully stocked kitchen. And if they want to take a bath, we’ve got bubble baths and Elmo bath toys. Anything they need, we provide.” because we've learned that with the way the brain processes trauma, no one ever forgets removal day. And so, we want to step in with God's love and grace and reminders that they are loved, and truly set them up for a different trajectory as they enter the foster care system.” Isaiah 117 does not receive any state funding. “I believe that this was never the state's mission or calling, and so all of our money comes from private foundations, churches and individuals,” says Ronda. Monetary gifts and clothing are always needed. On its website, people can choose a specific location where they would like their money or donations to go. People also may volunteer their time.
“I’m just blown away by all the ways I’ve seen God mobilize His people. We learn about coming together to do what we're called to do, and that's what I see in community after community. I see God's people stepping out, giving of what they have. It's just been a beautiful picture of what can happen when God's people join together,” Ronda says. Today, Ronda and Corey’s family has grown. Instead of two children, there are four. “We adopted Isaiah, who is now 7 ½, and then we adopted his full-sibling brother as well. Eli, who was 3 weeks when he came to us, is five and the baby of the family. We also have a dog named Millie and a cat named Figaro. It just feels like this was the family we were always supposed to have.”

DYNAMIC REALTY TEAM “The key is to set realistic customer expectations, and then not to just meet them, but to exceed them, preferably in unexpected and helpful ways,” is the self-proclaimed core belief of a married couple and Realtor team, The Polzel Group of Benchmark Realty, LLC. Amanda and Jeremy Polzel indicate they focus on hard work, comprehensive solutions and their true passions within their real estate business. “To give real service, you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity,” Amanda says. She admits her intense interest in real estate led her headfirst into the industry about six years ago. "We specialize in all facets of the business, whether it be navigating the way for first-time home buyers, establishing a new home for the growing family, or providing help in the luxury market." Coming from the world of high-end residential architecture, Jeremy says he offers a unique take on each individual property. "We're there every step of the way helping our clients with all of their real estate needs. We want our clients to have a fun, easy and stress-free experience, whether buying or selling a home," he says. Jeremy and Amanda work with buyers, sellers and investors throughout the Greater Nashville area. He says they guide clients step-by-step. "We're also here to make sure you get the most out of your home so that you can start making new memories in your new home. We take pride in our ability to market your property to the right audience so that your home sells quickly and for top dollar."

For selling properties, Jeremy says they execute strategic home prices, creative advertising and top-notch negotiation tactics, bolstered by weekly communication with clients. Regarding buying properties, Amanda says they serve as clients' trusted advisors throughout the entire process. "This frees clients to focus on the one thing that nobody but they can do — pick the house that feels right. We’re here to do everything else." "What makes this so gratifying is to be a part of something so personal for our clients," Jeremy assures. "God has given us a life that far out does anything we could have imagined for ourselves. I love people and meeting new people. I think that each individual is brought into our lives with a purpose, it may be for a brief moment or maybe a lifetime. Either way they are there for a reason," reflects Amanda. The holidays are now underway, and with it, the real estate world typically welcomes brief moments of respite. The Polzels share that they use this seasonal slowdown to press the reset button and be more intentional in their relationship with each other, their daughters, family and friends. They also celebrate the spirit of giving by taking part in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program to supply children in need with Christmas gifts. Amanda and Jeremy say they value the importance of teaching their children the power of giving and thinking of others, especially at Christmas time. 615.499.8603 503.332.9469 ThePolzelGroup.com

BEHIND THE SCENES:
OPRY COUNTRY CHRISTMAS The Grand Ole Opry has been called the home of country music, and as the saying goes, there’s no place like home for the holidays. In 2021, Opry Country Christmas debuted for its inaugural season, bringing beloved holiday songs and country artists together to celebrate a new Christmas tradition in Music City. This year, Opry Country Christmas is back and even better than before with double the shows for the 2022 season, each brimming with beloved, Nashville-influenced stories and songs filled with holiday spirit. “In the past, there hadn’t been Christmasrelated Opry programming,” says Dan Rogers, executive producer of the Grand Ole Opry. “Of course, the closer we get to Christmas day, the more likely you are going to hear holiday favorites on stage. This is the first time this iconic show has created its own holiday performance.” In true Opry fashion, each Opry Country Christmas show is filled with varying styles of music spanning generations, plus storytelling and comedy. Hosted by Grammy-award-winning trio the Gatlin Brothers, each show features at least one guest artist and a single spotlight artist to conclude the show. “This is where Music City and the holidays truly converge,” Dan says. “Not only is it the best of the Opry with a holiday flair in that you CONTINUED >

“We hope people leave with a great appreciation for the music, but also for Nashville’s contributions to the holidays.” still hear these different styles of music, you also hear holiday songs of the Old West, you hear traditional favorites, both secular and Christmas hymns. There is more often than not a touch of bluegrass, and there's, you know, the rocking side of Christmas.” Planning the Opry Country Christmas show is no small feat. For the 2022 lineup, planning began immediately after the 2021 show wrapped due to its rousing success. Prior to the announcement this summer that the show would be returning, several acts had already been booked. “I think we all looked at each other and said, ‘Wow, we feel really good about [the show],’” Dan shares. “People were interested from the get-go. It was just really interactive, lively, smiles on people's faces, multigenerational…all those things you want in a holiday performance. We really started planning the minute we finished last year.” One of the most interesting aspects of the show stems from the city’s robust country music history, as many holiday favorites have unique (and unknown) ties to Nashville. What are they? The stories will be

thoughtfully revealed throughout the show, so guests must visit to find out! “We hope people leave with a great appreciation for the music, but also for Nashville's contributions to the holidays,” Dan adds. “Most importantly, it’s one of the few places on Earth where you can see Santa play an electric guitar.” Beginning November 27 and running periodically through December 22, this year’s lineup includes headliners Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, Chris Janson, Trace Adkins and Mandy Barnett, plus appearances from renowned Opry members. Audience members can expect a 2-hour, two-act show, with beverages available to purchase onsite. “To me, the Opry Country Christmas show is the quintessential way you can celebrate the holidays in Nashville,” says Dan. “It speaks to what our city and our region hold dear and our collective history. The Opry hopefully makes everybody proud of their hometown, and I hope that this show does the same.” To purchase Country Christmas tickets, visit Opry.com.

Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Relatable interior designer, television host and locally based lifestyle influencer Lauren Makk was instrumental in HGTV Urban Oasis' design home in Nashville. Additionally, she's willing to share some inspiring design ideas with Brentwood Lifestyle readers. If Lauren and her helpful advice seem very familiar, it should. She's known for renovation space makeover TV shows and competitions, such as Design Star: Next Gen (2021), Bake or Break (2022) and Shop Class (2020). She also provided real estate expertise as the co-host and home life-stylist on ABC’s talk show, FABLife. She spearheaded the Emmy AwardWinning show, Trading Spaces, and the hit home renovation show Drill Team for A&E, too. At press time, she was flying to New York to film a Christmas Special for celebrity cook and TV personality Rachael Ray. She says the Rachael Ray show is about fun and easy DIY holiday entertaining. "It was a blast!" Lauren's signature approach to affordable luxury, as well as her homegirl-next-door charisma, is noticed and appreciated by her audiences. By incorporating “relaxed sophistication” into her approaches, she says she draws inspiration from architecture and from how clients are actually functioning in their spaces. She grew up in Oklahoma watching her mother renovate and flip houses. Then her design career ramped up after college while she was designing model homes in Los Angeles. "Bold, bright, clean and classic definitely sums up my design style," surmises Lauren. "So holiday-related designing is certainly my fun time." Lauren says she loves out-of-the-box ways to approach decorating for the holidays. To that end, she's happy to share the following fun, budget-friendly design tips for adding extra spirit into the upcoming holiday season: 1. Have some extra ornaments? Throw them in a cute dish or bowl. These little orbs of opulence look great on a coffee table, entryway, or shelf. If the colors match one's decor, they can even be kept out all year long. "You could also string groups of them together on some fishing line to create a stunning mantle garland," she adds.

2. Wreaths aren’t just for front doors. Consider hanging smaller versions over upper kitchen cabinets, oven hoods or even around dining lights for an unexpected punch. "Just make sure they aren’t obstructing any light bulbs, and you’re good to go," she assures. 3. Think outside of the gift box when it comes to holiday gift wrap. Lauren says she likes to use coordinating paper as a disposable addition to her tablescape. "I layer them up by using one pattern as a tablecloth, another pattern as a runner, and even cut out rectangles or other shapes in a third for my placemats. The effect is breathtaking, and I can throw it all in my recycle bin when my guests leave."
