KEEPING THE CHARACTER Every renovation project has boundaries. Unless you are willing to tear down a house and start fresh, there are limitations to what you can do. “With every home, you are given some good, some bad and some ugly,” says Joe Jennings, “If a house has good bones, you will be starting with more good things than bad, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have challenges.” In the Georgian Project, we started with a lot of great things, but some challenges. Though there are some beautiful original architectural elements, it does create some challenges when bringing it into the current era. One example is the built-in stereo and cabinets in the paneled den. It’s a beautiful piece of dark stained wood, but it isn’t exactly the light and open look we’re going for. Think of converting an English library to a bright and airy sitting room. Originally, we considered removing all of the wood, but with a change of cabinet pulls, removal of the shelves for a tv mount, adding mirrored fronts and some paint, it becomes a 21st century showpiece. Another beautiful “keeper” is the slate floor in the sunroom. Extremely popular in the 60’s, black slate can be an anchor to a light-filled sunroom. Fortunately, rebuilding the room has given us a vaulted ceiling and a back wall made entirely of windows. With the right design elements like an amazing rug and small accessories, it becomes the wow-room with ties to the 60s and the twenty-first century! A large element in the sunroom is the chimney. In the original 60s design, the chimney and sunroom were encased in a large box made of painted pecky Cyprus paneling. When the paneling was removed, we exposed the beautiful clinker brick. In our open design, we’re going to paint the exposed brick to contrast with the black slate floor. We will also layer decorative moldings to accent the brick. In the 2021 Georgian house, the chimney becomes a focal point of the sunroom instead of an afterthought. The key is to remember that your remodeling, not rebuilding. Keep those things that made the house worth buying, and you’ll have a home with charm and character while still creating a beautiful modern aesthetic. CREATE A BEAUTIFUL HOME THAT WORKS FOR PERSONAL LIFESTYLES PEOPLE ARE FOCUSING MORE AND MORE ON THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THEIR HOMES. They want to actually use all the space they have, whether it’s for an office, a craft room or a den. They also want these spaces to be not only aesthetically pleasing, but also comfortable, warm and inviting. “I think there are a couple of trends which were already established ARTICLE SUE BALDANI

and have been accelerated by COVID,” says Jennifer Turberfield, a realtor with Benchmark Realty in Nashville. “Firstly, homeowners are looking for homes that work for them with beautiful family spaces and functional design. Secondly, today’s homebuyers are willing to pay more for a home that’s already done versus taking on projects in a property that has potential.” Here, Jennifer talks about what’s in style now.

Warm Neutrals: The essence of elegance is simplicity, and Nashville home-

1

owners are definitely embracing Coco Chanel’s mantra with monochromatic neutral color palettes. Gone are the cool, grey tones. Now we’re seeing warm whites, sandy oatmeals and creamy hues, which usher in a welcome calm and serenity into our homes.

Texture and Color: In parallel with and complementary to the rise of warm

2

neutrals, the use of texture has seen a massive resurgence as a means to add visual and tactile interest. Whether it’s raised and patterned tiling, or perhaps wood grain knots in ceiling beams, texture is a beautiful way to incorporate dimension, design and allure with more of a whisper than a shout. Using wallpaper on either one wall in a larger room such as a dining room or bedroom, or adding it to an entire small space, such as a powder room or laundry, wallpaper is a fantastic way to infuse personality and character. Color and pattern can add an impactful punch that livens up a space without overwhelming. CONTINUED >

toward a more open floor plan for many years now and while that shows no sign of changing anytime soon, what we’re seeing is an increase in dramatic architectural statements to add a wow factor. It might be floor-to-ceiling steel windows that bring the outside in, or perhaps a limestone surround wood-burning fireplace or maybe a sculptural triple tier chandelier. Although less is more, a show-stopping focal point can visually anchor a space as well as commanding attention and adding a touch of decadence.

SINGER-SONGWRITER, ACTRESS, WRITER: THIS ENERGETIC TEXAN IS CREATING A PERSONAL EMPIRE SPRINKLED WITH NASHVILLE INFLUENCES

RECONNECTING WITH RACHEL BRADSHAW RACHEL BRADSHAW IS NO STRANGER TO THE SPOTLIGHT, NOR DOES SHE AVOID IT. The daughter of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw grew up on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, before embarking on a successful music career in Nashville. Today, she stars in the hit reality TV series ”The Bradshaw Bunch” on E! Network, alongside her dad, stepmom and two sisters. While Rachel finds herself under a brighter spotlight today, that’s not what motivates this 34-year-old, multi-talented Texan. “I’m confident in my own skin, and that’s a trait I get from my dad,” Rachel confidently explains. Terry’s musical interest and singing with his daughter helped lay groundwork for Rachel’s music career. “Dad and I always sang ‘Crazy’ together, and he encouraged me to play and sing.” Fans of the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback may recall the elder Bradshaw recorded several country and gospel albums, including “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” in 1976. Rachel enrolled at Belmont University in 2002, initially studying music before focusing on business. Her 16-year stint in Nashville delivered much success. Soon after settling in Music City, Rachel signed her first publishing contract. Writing songs and hanging out with friends also set the stage for future endeavors. “My first group of Nashville friends included Jamey Johnson, Jerrod Niemann, Randy Houser, Dallas Davidson and other

aspiring writers,” says Rachel. “I surrounded myself with people

who had big dreams. We’d always go to Tin Roof because that’s

where dreams are made.”

She co-wrote the No. 1 hit, “What Do You Want,” with Jerrod in

2010 and played his girlfriend in the video. However, she also encountered a few potholes along the way. In 2014, her fairy-tale marriage to Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas ended three months later when he died in an automobile accident. Rob’s untimely passing broke Rachel’s heart but not her spirit. She regained her focus and continued writing and recording songs, including a stint in 2015 with the trio, Stella James. In 2020, Rachel released three singles, including “Wild Horse.” Both her triumphs and tragedies melded together to create a strong, determined woman. MOVING FROM STAGE TO SCREEN The Bradshaw family’s foray into reality TV began in 2016 when Terry starred in “Better Late Than Never” with fellow celebrities. However, the family’s 2020 appearance on the TV game show “Family Feud” got executives thinking about showcasing their antics in their own reality show.

Initially, Rachel liked the idea of her family filming a TV series together. Then she thought about having to relive her most challenging personal moments. “I don’t think people realize what all goes into filming a reality show,” explains Rachel. “You’re really putting your life out there, especially when you discuss intimate issues.” The difference between performing music before live audiences and filming a TV series is night and day to Rachel. “Everyone knows you’ve got to have thick skin to perform. The difference is when you’re playing music on stage, you can instantly relate to the crowd because you’re in the flesh with the audience. When filming TV episodes, it’s just you and the crew. You have to wait months to find out how fans and the media feel about the show.” When Terry sat down with the family to discuss the opportunity, he got straight to the point. “We’re really putting ourselves on the chopping block by putting our lives out there,” Rachel recalls. In 2020, the inaugural season of “The Bradshaw Bunch” launched with success. It took six months to film 10 episodes. Season two took about four months and will debut Oct. 6.

BRADSHAW REBRANDING RACHEL BRADSHAW (CONTINUED)

RACHEL’S STYLE

Describing Rachel’s personal style is similar to herding wild

mustangs. “I’m all over the place. I’ll dress like a Southern girl one day. Another day I’ll branch out into something more high fashion. I love sleek looks -- the classic look. The bottom line is I stick with what looks good on me.” Almost everything looks great on Rachel, yet her affinity for blazers sets her apart. “I’m a blazer girl, and I probably wear them five days a week. It’s my go-to signature look. Someday I hope to introduce my own blazer line.” Rachel praises the fashion differences between her sister Erin and step-sister Lacey. “I’m the loud, high-end sister,” notes Rachel. “I love walking into a room and kind of owning it, and my style reflects that whether I’m going to the gym or visiting my favorite Nashville restaurants.” “Lacey is sporty and is effortlessly beautiful. She can easily rock the no-makeup look. Erin is more high-fashion and Southern, yet a little more reserved. But when she gets in a mood, she becomes the life of the party.” Do Rachel or her sisters offer fashion advice to their Hall of Fame dad?

“Oh my gosh, we try to get him outside of his fashion box, but Dad beats to his own drum. He loves his Tommy Bahama shirts, shorts, conductor cap and tennis shoes. I seriously doubt he’ll make any celebrity style list,” Rachel laughs. MUSIC CITY FAVS AND FUTURE PLANS When Rachel pops in to visit friends and write songs, there’s a chance you’ll spot her at one of several trendy spots in the Nashville area. She and her dad, Terry, had a delightful time posing for these photos at the gorgeous Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille in Cool Springs, certain to be a new hangout for Rachel and her entertainment friends. “Adele’s is one of my favorites. The bacon with cotton candy at Kayne Prime is amazing. I also like the Marsh House in the Thompson Hotel for its vibe and seafood. And I love the original Puckett’s in Leiper’s Fork for the small-town ambiance and yummy barbecue. It feels like you’re in paradise.” Music’s played an enormous part in Rachel’s life, but she’s no longer placing her eggs in one basket. “I just want to release music for fun these days. That takes the pressure off of having to live in Nashville full-time.” Now a brand ambassador for Hot Works, her next steps include writing a memoir and possibly introducing a perfume line. “I’ve always wanted to write a tell-all intertwined with personal advice. I’ve seen triumph and tragedy and I want to impact the lives of others.” 28

While casual dress codes and earthy tones in fabrics are expected to be sought for this fall, Charles says they were able to locate amazing new Tweeds from Scotland that are making smashing jackets. Fabrics used in their garments originate from all over the globe. He says the shoes and leather products come from Spain. The accessories are created mainly in New York. Examples of the quality-driven fabric manufacturers they use are: Gladson New York, Holland & Sherry and Caccioppoli. FOR A HEARTY DOSE OF DOPAMINE DRESSING, A TAL-

help define who people are, and that creating such auras is a true art form. “I enjoy what I do, especially when customers like the apparel we put together for them. I love seeing the looks on clients’ faces when they glance in the mirror at that ‘aha moment,’ and say they’re gonna’ look like a million dollars,” admits this clothing enthusiast. Charles’ fashion pedigree includes a detailed eye for style and a passion for making people look outstanding and confident. He exercised his gift through his college years in Memphis, selling custom clothing. Many feel Charles’s real talent is creating one’s entire look. He can go into a closet and orchestrate a whole wardrobe from socks to hats. Charles’ incredible sense of color coordination is one skill that stands out to clients. “I’m still a big fan of color. There’s excitement and joy in pushing the envelope of what colors go together,” he adds. He says starting with accessories can really change up one’s looks. “Ties are becoming optional for office wear, with men opting for cool shirts with interesting cufflinks, great-looking shoes and jeans or chinos. Or sometimes, it’s about boldly mixing stripes and patterns.”

ANY OLD IRON DESIGN PIONEER BROADENS EDGY STYLE BEYOND SEQUINS

42

Belle Meade Lifestyle | September 2021

COMING OFF A YEAR AND A HALF OF LIVING IN COSIES SIGNALS IT’S A PERFECT TIME TO ADD A LITTLE SPARKLE BACK INTO FALL WARDROBES. Remember, life’s too short to be boring. Clothing enthusiasts exude lifestyles fueled by a love for classic, timeless and sometimes flashy garments made with the highest level of craftsmanship. At Nashville-based Any Old Iron clothing design studio, concepts and products spring from anything but ‘any old’ ideas -- and Any Old Iron garments beckon to fashionistas with varied dynamics in play. Any Old Iron founder, designer and stylist Andrew Clancey moved his flagship British-themed boutique from New York City to Nashville during October 2014. He began dressing Music City’s musicians and fashion-forward locals. Now a retail store, Any Old Iron’s clients include Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Cher, Ozzy Ozbourne, Kate Bosworth, Taylor Swift, Elton John, Cardi B, Florida Georgia Line, Bruno Mars, Cyndi Lauper, Nikki Minaj, the Jonas Bros, The Black Crowes, Meghan Linsey, The Shindellas and Jane Fonda. Miranda Lambert was one of his first Nashville clients, he recalls. “We add new sizzle designs every month, based on music-inspired flair,” says Andrew, who relays that his younger self used to rush to dress like new music artists that he discovered or bands he enjoyed. BACK STAGE (CONTINUED)

As a Yorkshire, England native, Andrew likes that the name “Any Old Iron” also is an Old English music hall song that references a young man’s style and fashionable art of dressing – a quality that he assures is distinctly English, and, ever-present in his brand’s aesthetic. A chance meeting at an Irish wedding led to Andrew’s first retail store as a multi-brand showcasing of British designers to shoppers in the United States. It’s been an ambitious, soulful journey since. “I make things that I like to wear, which sometimes are like a punked-up Liberace approach. I try not to follow trends, and I really like old punk with disco. I like the individualism of the whole Punk movement,” he says. “My clothes reflect an alternative music mixture, which certainly includes country.” NEW DRESS LINE WITH A TWIST New this month is Andrew’s fresh dress collection. “This collection is a foray beyond sequins for me, and they’re digitally printed. The dresses are easy to wear, and are meant to comfortably go from day to evening. They are bold, bright and colorful,” he reveals. With various fashion shows coming, Andrew says his new, full collections will include his “greatest hits with a

few surprises.” For Nashville Fashion Week during Oct. 12-16, Andrew says each designer is only allowed to feature 10 pieces each. “We’ll have some fully hand-beaded pieces for the runways, along with fusion of new, one-of-a-kind elements,” he adds. Andrew premiered his first collection at Nashville Fashion Week during 2016. CUSTOM ORDERS The Any Old Iron team has access to an off-site tailor, with the shop also offering ready-to-wear items. Andrew recently designed a custom suit for Sam Williams, the grandson of country music pioneer Hank Williams and the son of outlaw legend Hank Williams Jr. “I got great satisfaction from that. But everyone who comes through our door can be their own celebrity with individual measurements and custom clothes. We’re very relaxed and easy-going,” he says. In fact, when asked how he decides what to wear, Andrew admits he has a go-to look with a basic template, but that he doesn’t think too much about it, although

he does say he always liked to dress “differently.” Rather, he lets his intuition lead the way -- often with symbols of skulls, stars and lightning bolts. “Any challenge is interesting,” says the designer of new projects stemming from companies or high-profile clients. Saying that he’s inspired by making their own textiles, Andrew’s currently working on uniquely branded pajamas for the global gin distiller Bombay Sapphire. AROUND THE FASHION CORNER During the early stages of the recent pandemic, Andrew even made facial masks into fun statements by creating a signature, sequined version for both adults and children. When those masks kept selling out, Andrew says he wanted to do something more helpful in the fight against COVID-19 spreading. So he partnered with Med Threads Nashville, and donated cotton versions of the masks. He says he still helps supply masks to schoolchildren and college students, and will provide discounts to medical teams who may need them in bulk. He says his overall sales increased by 25 percent once his company joined some online clothing platforms. “We got the eyes of England and Europe during the pandemic, and gained an international following,” he adds. “Now we’re thinking people are ready for some going-out pieces. They want some sparkly evenings. And we realize it’s not just about designing pieces for being up on stages. Style is shifting in that more people want to put a little more glam into their daily lives. That makes me happy,” Andrew concludes. 8 Music Square South Thursday through Monday; appointments available during 12-5 p.m. 615.649.8499 AnyOldIron.us

Any Old Iron is the brainchild of designer/stylist Andrew Clancey. The label's name is rooted in the olden cry of a scrap man collecting metal with his horse and cart. It hearkens to Clancey’s family scrap metal business founded in 1872. “Any Old Iron” also is an Old English music hall song referencing a young man’s sartorial dandyism. THE SKY'S THE LIMIT WITH THIS EVENTS STAGING AND WEDDING PLANNING BUSINESS

“NO EVENT SHOULD BE THE SAME, AND IT SHOULD BE ALL ABOUT YOU! WHETHER IT’S A BIG MARRYING-YOUR-BOO DAY, DOING POPUP CONCERTS, OR CREATING BRANDED EXPERIENCES FOR EMPLOYEES, WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED,” SAYS BRITTANY OLSEN, OWNER AND EVENT DIRECTOR OF STUDIO B CONSULTING. Studio B was born during 2020 when this Nashville native decided to anchor her international event producer expertise from Music City. Brittany actually started her career in Nashville, handling weddings, corporate/social functions and music industry events. She then worked for an event agency based in the United Kingdom, and traveled the globe to produce events.

CITY SCENE (CONTINUED) “We create tailor-made, intentionally curated experiences. There are no borders and we know no limits. We’re doers. Creators. And memory-makers. We’re relationship people who are in it for the long-haul,” says Brittany. She says event specialists are naturally used to adjusting and making last-minute decisions, so the pivoting often required by current pandemic conditions can be done calmly and smartly. In fact, she says Studio B has added “COVID Compliance Management” to their services, which includes on-site testing and contact tracing. “We believe hybrid events that combine in-person with virtual options will remain, as we’re all mindful of others health concerns,” says Brittany. Adding style to parties starts with determining the intended mood desired at any event, Brittany explains. “Every company, couple or group has its own identity.
