SOLES4SOULS (CONTINUED)
Around the world, the nonprofit team typically provides 4 to 5 million pairs of shoes to people in need each year, often through their microenterprise program that helps individuals launch their own businesses by reselling donated clothing and shoes. One program that Buddy says they hope to do more with during 2022 is the Street Business School, a Colorado-based curriculum that gives women around the world the tools to become entrepreneurs to support themselves and their families. "We were working through this program in Africa, and have now taken it into Central America and the Caribbean," he says. "It's about doing it together, with everybody winning a little

h e lpin g Through the end of December, Soles4Souls is partnering with the following companies whose leaders are donating to the nonprofit with purchases of these brands: Purchase Tree Tribe’s best selling eco-bottle and they will donate 20% of all sales to S4S. Get free shipping from Yenta + Posha when buying two or more insoles; an additional 5% of all sales benefit Soles4Souls, on top of their regular 5% already donated. Use code SOLES at checkout for 15% off entire order at Kayla Elizabeth magnetic clasp shoe jewelry and they will donate 10% of all proceeds from this promotion to the micro-enterprise initiative, helping women step out of poverty by starting their own businesses. Buy MaCae casual chic sneakers and they will donate to S4S a $1 of every shoe sold. GIVING BACK A FOUNDATION BUILT ON LOVE AND DEDICATION

WHEN 21-YEAR-OLD DUSTIN JACK WELLS WAS KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN 2005, THE LOSS OF THIS GREGARIOUS AND LOVING PERSONALITY SHATTERED HIS ENTIRE FAMILY. What they soon came to realize was how much his loss was felt by others as well, and how many people would step up to honor Dustin’s memory. The Dustin J. Wells Foundation was founded in 2008, and since then it has raised, through its annual Gift of Music benefit concerts, more than a million dollars to help many amazing nonprofits with their missions. Dustin was a music business major at Belmont University and a musician. “It was very clear when we were looking for ways to keep his memory alive, we were looking for works he would have supported,” says his father, Dr. Dennis Wells, a well-known cosmetic dentist with the Nashville Center for Aesthetic Dentistry. “The WO Smith Community Music School was an easy decision for us and it was a nice match up for Dustin’s interest and what he was about.” The school helps to share the gift of music with underprivileged children in the community. The other main beneficiary is The Scott Hamilton Cares Foundation,

which focuses on finding a cure for cancer. “We’ve been blessed to know Scott and Tracy Hamilton for many years and we’ve just always admired Scott’s unbelievable fortitude to rise up and really try to individually move the meter on cancer research,” he says. “We know that Dustin would have really been proud to help advance that work.” Proceeds from the Dustin J. Wells Foundation also support many other charities and organizations such as Make-A-Wish, Feed Middle Tennessee, and Hy-Lake Christian Camp. Being able to help others in their son’s name has been very healing, and Dr. Wells and his wife Doris credit many people with being instrumental in helping them find this path to healing. “One is my office manager of 25 years, Deb Ham,” he says. “She almost single handedly gets all the organization done and makes it all happen. “Another person who is very integral to all this is my brother Kent Wells, who has always been very generous in getting the bands together year after year. He’s given so much to make sure everything works out well.” Kent’s son Derek, a well-known studio guitar player who has played on multiple number one records, also became involved along the way. He helped put bands together and asked various artists to join in on the cause to celebrate his cousin’s legacy. In addition to being Dr. Wells’ brother, Kent is Dolly Parton’s long-time producer and musical director; Dolly is also one of Dr. Wells’ patients. The famous CONTINUED >

IT’S SAID THAT MUSIC SOOTHES OUR SOUL. It also brings us joy and has the ability to evoke strong feelings, whether listened to alone, or in a crowd of people. Without music, our lives would be less magical. The contemporary Christian band, We the Kingdom, brings us this magic not only through its sound, but also through its meaningful, uplifting and sometimes brutally honest lyrics. Every song tells a story. Based out

Soon after, the band released the single, Holy Water, in 2019 and it hit number two on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart. In October 2019, they released their first EP, Live at the Wheelhouse, which reached the Top Three on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart. Then in 2020, their second EP, Live Acoustic Sessions, was released, followed by their full-length album Holy Water, which debuted at number four on the Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. This past October, We the Kingdom released their Christmas album, A Family Christmas, which contains some beloved

classics with the band’s own unique spin. There are five songs in total and one song has two versions. While categorized as Christian, the music actually encompasses the sound and style of rock, soul, country, folk and pop. Because of this, it appeals to a very diverse crowd. The group also uses their music not just to entertain and connect with others, but to find peace and serenity within each other. “It’s almost like five different artists came together and God used the five of us to mesh and heal each of our five individual stories and to fulfill the same dream that we all had to be an artist,” says Martin. “It’s more about writing songs that speak the universal language of the world and I used to think that Christian music was sometimes so specific to one thing that it kind of ruled out everyone else who didn’t understand what was going on,” says Martin. “But every once in a while, songs come out that become the soundtrack to people’s lives

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

F LI P THE SWI TCH As a child, remember how the bright lights of a Christmas tree mesmerized you. Perhaps how the multicolored lights reflected off your favorite ornament and drew you in. Lighting, both year-round and during the holidays, is key says Joe Jennings, designer of the Georgian Project.
“It can have several purposes from drawing attention to
making it possible for work to be done. We are working hard in the Georgian Project to make the lighting unique and special.” When you are thinking of lighting in a new construction or in a remodel, you should consider the three types available: task lighting, general lighting, and accent lighting. Task lighting is generally used in kitchens and other workspaces where tasks are done.
General
lighting is solely to provide livable light in a room and includes can lighting. Accent lighting can go anywhere you want to create a focal point that highlights something, like a pinspot light on a piece of art or over a mantle. As you enter the Georgian project, the lighting has been strategically placed to move guests’ eyes from the front of the house to the back with many surprises in between.
There will be symmetrical sconces
flanking the doorway that leads to the back of the house, and accent lighting on a backwall.
As you look left into the formal living and
dining rooms, your eye will be drawn to the 1800’s French chandelier, which is original to the home, with focused lighting accenting special pieces of art. “In the main hallway, we are using cove lighting to make everything feel much larger than it is,” said Joe. Cove lighting requires the crown molding to be dropped three inches with lighting recessed inside of it so that the light bleeds to the ceiling taking the focus off the long hallway and bringing in an unexpected architectural feature. The rest of the project will incorporate other innovative lighting ideas and fixtures. “Every room will have something special,” said Joe. To learn more about Joe Jennings and the Georgian Project, go to www.readytosellnashville.com.
