Happy Father's Day
June 2022 PUBLISHER S
Edward Cooper | edward.cooper@citylifestyle.com Dawn Cooper | dawn.cooper@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
An inspirational man has the power and privilege of mentoring and shaping young people in their lives to grow and mature in numerous ways. Whether a father, coach, uncle, or boss, being a role model and leading by example can impact those around you. We can probably think of a man in our life that had a lasting impact on us at one time or another. It could be someone who encouraged us to be a better version of ourselves, who saw the best in us, or who we looked up to for guidance. Perhaps, someone we don't personally know but inspires us by their greatness. These role models can make huge impacts on our lives. We are so grateful to our fathers, who were both named John. They inspired us to live in our greatness, be the best version of ourselves, and be kind to everyone who crosses our path. They taught us to live each day with gratitude, have respect and compassion for others, and be better every day. Our Dad's encouraged us to live in our light, grow every day, look for the good in people, and keep the faith always as life is truly happening for us, not to us. We appreciate and thank all the amazing men in our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We highlight men who work hard and inspire others to do the same. We applaud all men making a difference in someone's life, big or small. Your lasting impact and its ripple effect are worth it. In this issue, we feature John Ruiz and his family. John is the owner of Cigarette Racing Team, MSP Recovery, MSP Recovery Law, and many other business endeavors. His work ethic and family dedication are inspiring. Thank you for reading and supporting Beaches of Miami Lifestyle. With love,

The Ruiz Family shares a love of sports.

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE
LOVE OF FAMILY AND THE SEA A CONVERSATION WITH JOHN RUIZ John Ruiz has a love affair with the sea that began when he was fifteen years old. From the moment he took out “the first boat that I owned: a 28-foot Pantera that I built pretty much on my own,” he experienced a passion for boating and a sense of being wholly disconnected while at sea: “it’s pretty much my favorite place.” From his law school days at the University of Miami through today, that emotion has remained a constant. Meanwhile, he raised a family and built a multibillion empire. Thirty years after he began practicing law, Ruiz’s business portfolio includes the soon-to-go-public MSP Recovery: a Medicare, Medicaid, commercial, and secondary payer reimbursement recovery platform, MPS Recovery Law Firm, Cigarette Racing Team, Lionheart Acquisition Corporation, and the recently launched NIL Time is Now, Luminsea, and Luminsea Offshore Powerboat Races, Life Wallet, powered by MSP Recovery to provide individuals easy access to their healthcare history. Taking MSP Recovery public implies more responsibilities, while acquiring the Cigarette Racing Team means complete involvement in the design process: “I’m involved in every product, every design, very deeply involved. I do a lot of the safety aspects for the boats. I’m very much into safety because even though you feel very safe in Cigarettes, I want to make that even better with anti-collision systems and self-deploying bumpers.” The cigarette will also
be introducing new products to the market, beginning with the E-Jet personal watercraft. How does he manage all his business and personal activities? He doesn’t sleep much, works very efficiently, does not procrastinate, and makes quick decisions informed by his years of experience. “I do the work that requires focusing between 3:30 – 6:30 AM” when there are no interruptions. Speed reading, learning from experts, and a photographic memory lets him “do things quicker.” Ruiz also credits his success to starting his practice alone: “I didn’t have money to pay rent,” therefore, he exchanged legal representation for office space; and did everything himself, from making copies and interviewing clients to filing his documents in court: “It was a huge learning experience from the get-go.” And there is his father, Eliseo Ruiz, who, at 92, continues to play a vital role in the family. According to Ruiz, “99.9% of everything I am today results from my father’s life lessons.” A hard worker who didn’t sleep much either: “taught me you have to work hard.” Trait John Ruiz’s children also practice: “I’ve tried to instill in my kids that nothing’s free, money doesn’t make you, you’re not better than anyone else just because you have money.” But he proudly says: “I’m blessed; my three kids are just amazing!” Like him, Johnny, Cristina, and Alex are University of Miami graduates and work with him: “they are very, very hard workers.”

John Ruiz and his kids
Believing in himself and working hard are the cornerstone of his success story. Also, “I don’t take no for an answer.” Or stop something he believes in because others say it will not work. What is Ruiz’s strategy for success? He refers to Elon Musk, who recently said: “I don’t have a strategy. I start doing it, and my strategy develops along the way.” Ruiz follows a similar process: “When I start something, I envision it already carried through. So, if I think of a new technology, I see it the whole way through in my head, I can envision how I’m going to put it together, so it’s just getting the team to execute it. And along the way, you make some adjustments.” And then he continues to move forward: “To me, it’s par for the course; I still keep working the same way.” Resting on his laurels is not part of his working process because he says: “I have a lot more to accomplish yet.” No doubt. As his workload continues to expand, Ruiz makes sure to create the space in his schedule for quality time with his family: “I eat at least once a week with my dad, with my sisters, and…” although he sees them regularly at the office, “the same thing

with my kids.” He keeps his parents’ lessons close to heart: “to be giving, not be selfish, think of others.” He shares what he learned with his children: “No matter what happens, you must put in the time and the effort, treat others with respect, practice the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And try to be positive all the time.” He is committed to keeping his word, one of the precepts “my father instilled in me is at an early age: your word is gold.” Another piece of advice is never to leave home without cash or go on the road with less than half a tank of fuel: “in case there is an emergency, you are not without cash or an empty tank.” Ruiz is an avid sports fan who plays a bit of basketball, exercises, lifts weights, and does yoga. He picked up the latter as Covid made itself known; he appreciates the yoga practice because “it helps physically and mentally.” But for relaxation, Ruiz is “either watching sports or in my boat.” Because, as when he was 15, the sea continues to manifest its magic and deliver the priceless disconnect.
Eliseo and John Ruiz.

ERIC HORSTMEYER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARMANDO COLL
The Reward of Helping Others
As a divisional sales leader for USHEALTH Advisors, Eric Horstmeyer currently heads a team of over 50 insurance agents to fulfill the needs of his Miami Beach office. Eric and his team are readily available to help by answering your questions, explaining the intricacies of the health insurance options available in the market, and finding the product best suited to each customer’s requirements. Eric answers some questions about USHEALTH Advisors and his operation as an introduction to his services. What led you to become an insurance agent? I found this career by accident. Previously, I was a restaurant owner for 14 years: Co-CEO of one of the largest hospitality groups in the Caribbean and operator/investor in 11 different locations in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. In 2017, two category-5 hurricanes: Irma and Maria, hit St. Thomas; they wiped us off the map within two weeks. A friend asked me to join him at a meeting where the USHA pitched an opportunity. Looking to reinvent myself, I signed up immediately to get licensed and never looked back. What made you decide to join USHEALTH Advisors? I joined USHEALTH Advisors not only because they were the “disrupters” of the health insurance industry, which meant an economic opportunity. But I was more impressed that this is a company with a heart, practicing its mission statement of “H.O.P.E.—Helping Other People Everyday.” That was most attractive. How many agents work with you? We’ve grown dramatically since opening on Miami Beach in October. I currently have 52 contracted active agents with 13 more in the licensing. My leadership team is incredible; they are the best in the business; they know how to care for the customer. What types of products do you offer? We focus on selling health coverage and various ancillary products in 30 states. We work nationwide primarily with families, individuals, and small businesses (typically under 20 employees). Focusing on this niche market allows us to provide concierge service, advising people on all their options. After the sale, we provide top-shelf customer service, assisting clients with questions, claims, reimbursements, and billing issues. Relationships are everything in this business. By building a relationship, you gain a client forever. What should people look for in insurance coverage? The most crucial aspect of any health plan is unlimited lifetime benefits. A lot of limited benefit plans cap out at $1 million.
20
FAM ILY CA R E | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
That may sound sufficient, but it won’t cover a catastrophic claim. Second, make sure the deductible is affordable to the client; they must pay it before having surgery or being hospitalized. How can you and your team most effectively help people seeking health insurance? I believe “Visibility leads to credibility, which drives profitability.” As part of our HOPE mission, we do a quarterly charitable project where all agents participate. My agents are involved in the Miami-Dade community, building relationships, letting people know about our work, and guiding them through the complicated maze of the health insurance market. How different is the Miami-Dade market from others in Florida? This market is perfectly aligned with our work. We solve the problem of many self-employed entrepreneurs and small businesses in the Miami-Dade market who don’t have access to an employer plan or cannot afford a large group health insurance plan. When are you busiest during the year? Our prime season runs from November 1 to the end of the year. That coincides with the Obamacare open enrollment period. Millions of individuals and small businesses start shopping for a new (and usually more affordable) plan, so our phones ring off the hook during those two months. But we are super busy year-round with several top-notch products that help people outside the open enrollment period. Tell us the three most important lessons you have learned in the business? First, I’ve learned that you cannot accomplish a big goal alone: you need a team, one that is like-minded, with similar values. Second, a 40-hour-a-week mindset is not conducive to success in a sales business. We work 55-70 hours a week because we love what we do, and that’s what it takes. Lastly, the most important thing I’ve learned is that income is the outcome of helping people. Solve their problem, show that you care, and you will be super successful. What is the most rewarding aspect of HOPE? Watching agents’ lives transform as they level up professionally and financially is most rewarding. This company saved my life, and I’ve seen it do the same for countless others. The next best thing is saving clients the money they need while getting them a comprehensive health plan that meets their requirements: it’s a win/win for everyone.
Eric Horstmeyer, third from the right, and his dyamic agents.

Family And Cooking Are His Passions AN INTERVIEW WITH CHEF SAMUEL “SAM” GORENSTEIN ARTICLE BY MARCIA MORGADO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANABELLA PADULA
The last eighteen months have been very gratifying for Chef Samuel “Sam” Gorenstein: he became a father and opened Abbale Telavivian Kitchen in Miami Beach. His initial culinary steps were in his mom’s kitchen in Barranquilla, Colombia, where he was born. The family moved to Miami when he was 14, and as a teenager worked at Les Halles in Coral Gables, Florida. The next stop was at Union Pacific, in New York City, under world-renowned chef Laurent Tourondel’s, followed by Michelin-starred BLT Fish. Back in Miami, after a stint at Michael Schwartz at Michael’s Genuine Food & Wine, he opened BLT Steak at The Betsy for Tourondel. In 2012, Gorenstein co-founded My Ceviche, and in 2015, Zuuk Mediterranean Kitchen. Last year, he and partner Omer Horev, founder of Pura Vida Miami, opened Abbale, located in a renovated bungalow in Miami Beach. He is thrilled to be back in the kitchen, cooking and experimenting with the flavors of Tel Aviv and the Mediterranean imbued with Colombian essence. What lessons have you learned during Abbale’s first year and what would you change if you were starting again? Opening any restaurant is a learning experience but launching Abbale during a pandemic was a challenge of a different
kind. There are always things to consider throughout the process of an opening, but honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing! How did you incorporate Barranquilla’s color and rhythms into Abbale’s menu? To a certain extent, the menu at Abbale is colorful and folkloric. I feel it’s representative of my birthplace and childhood in many ways, and the freshness of the food and the global ingredients we use all tie into that. How does a Telavivian kitchen reflect the kitchen where you took your first steps? Abbale reflects the foods I grew up around. My mom was always cooking; one of my earliest culinary memories is the smell of eggplant and pepper roasting. I was about seven years old when I started cooking with her and have never stopped. What do Tel Aviv, Barranquilla, and Miami Beach have in common that we find in the restaurant? All three are coastal cities with great weather, so fresh seafood is abundantly available. Ceviche, a staple in our dinner menu, is tied to my upbringing in Barranquilla and Cartagena. Café culture is quite popular in all three; sitting on our terrace, listening to

Chef Gorenstein in his favorite place: the kitchen.
people speak different languages: English, Hebrew, French, Spanish, you could be in any of those cities. Do you follow a daily routine in Abbale’s kitchen? Yes! I start my day with a macchiato; it gives me a chance to taste our coffee every morning, which is very important to me. We carry a blend of Colombian beans freshly roasted twice a week exclusively for Abbale. Then I check in with my team members and make my rounds tasting the production in the kitchen. By then, it’s time to begin service and welcome our guests. Who are the three most influential persons in your culinary development? Chef Laurent Tourondel gave me a shot at an early age and taught me valuable lessons that helped shape who I am today. Chef Michael Schwartz gave me an opportunity to learn about simplicity and embrace the local bounty. And finally, my grandfather sparked my interest in the kitchen at an early age.
Enjoying the outdoors at Abbale.
Abbale pays homage to fathers: how has being a father changed you? My priorities shifted once I became a father. Family comes first, above all else. Now, I am more focused than ever on building a solid brand and business for my children to have as an example. What do you want your children to learn from you? Honesty, perseverance, and kindness are three qualities that go together in life and business endeavors. How do you balance family life with the life of a chef? I focused on building a solid staff to spend time with my family while confident that the restaurant was running smoothly. I greatly appreciate my wife, she has been my biggest supporter. Without her, nothing would have been possible. How do you relax? Family! We love staying home and spending time together. And cooking together at home is a must! Where do you feel most comfortable? In any corner of my restaurant!

A sampling of Abbale's menu.
Where do you see Abbale in five years? I am grateful for the popularity of our restaurant and the appreciation of the cuisine, but I try not to get too far ahead of myself. I would love to see Abbale grow into a multi-unit brand. We are ready to take modern Israeli-Mediterranean food to different markets. Do you listen to music while cooking, and what music do you prefer? I love silence. After a busy-noisy shift, I enjoy having some time to think and reflect on the thoughts in my head. I appreciate music, but it’s not as part of my work. What irks you? What gives you joy? Honestly, I am calm, and it’s tough to get upset. My true joy is my family and the ability to to take care of their needs. What must you always have with you? I wish I could always carry finishing sea salt with me! What does Father’s Day mean to you? Father’s Day is a special occasion: a day to honor the bond I am building with my children and celebrate my father!

STEAKHOUSES FOR DAD ARTICLE BY MARCIA MORGADO
From myth to reality
StripSteak's Cut of Meat

StripSteak's Upstairs Lounge
What is it about men and steakhouses? Could the myth about cowboys wildly roaming the prairies, stopping to rest around the fire, and cooking a piece of meat to replenish their tired bodies impress masculine imagination? Many steakhouses transcend the myth creating a sophisticated eating experience for meat lovers. Miami has always offered its residents a steakhouse option. With the area’s culinary expansion in the last twenty years, some exciting places abound, ranging from the ultra-sophistication to a fun-filled expression with a gamut in between, including Japanese grilling. Michael Mina’s exquisite take on steakhouses includes Bourbon Steak at Turnberry and StripSteak at the Fontainbleau. Prime cuts of beef aged and grilled to perfection are the pieces-de-resistance. Please, don’t leave without sampling Bourbon Steak’s sides dishes, and its wine menu is ideal for pairings. StripSteak is a traditional steakhouse, its’

tantalizing prime cuts direct from their on-site aging room and an eclectic wine menu offers superb pairings. Sunday’s Parrillada at Los Fuegos by Francis Mallman will keep you around the table, sharing stories and sampling delicious Argentine-style beef cooking for hours, perfect for a family gathering. For fun, the Brazilian take on steakhouses cannot be topped. The new addition to that category is Coral Gable’s Fogo de Chão, and of course, their Miami Beach restaurant is equally fun and delicious. Make sure to flip the tag table on the red side when you’ve had enough, or the gauchos will bring more. For another take on beef, there’s KYU in Wynwood. The restaurant’s limited menu highlights longtime smoked brisket, fork-tender short ribs, and tasty beef marrow miso on toast points. KYU has an extensive cocktail and sake menu. Whatever your choice, enjoy it with Dad!

DJ SHAQ
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARMANDO COLL
From Tel Aviv to South Florida without skipping a beat
That could be the introduction to D.J. Shaq, who began his career as a D.J. while turning his passion for performing into a profitable business. Influenced by Solomun, Noir, Karmon, The Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Tupac, Bob Marley, Tiesto, and more, Shaq began as a performer in neighborhood bars. Back in 2009, he launched a D.J. company that grew into a lucrative operation: the company ran 12 top Tel Aviv entertainment venues. After three years as resident D.J. at the city’s Penguin Club, followed by six months at The Cat and the Dog, he moved to perform at Club Solo for three seasons. Fluent in all existing styles, he entertained at Clara, Light House, Shalvata, Litzman, Morfium, Markid, Langa, Mad, Cameo, La Gare, Bee, Leo, Mojo, Pascal, Shmone, and Lobby. His work earned him praise and recognition. Then the time came to explore other options. After stints in Washington, D.C., and Maryland in 2018, Shaq settled in

South Florida, where he has been active in the music scene. Shaq’s creativity moved him to innovations of deep house music, the genre derived from Chicago’s house music, the electronic dance music rooted in the Chicago of the 1980s. Defined by a steady pulse, it mixes European synthesizer music with 1970s soul and DJ-created beats using drum machines and synthesizers. Shaq is resident D.J. at The Guitar Hotel’s Rooftop Live. He is the owner/ musical director of Yalla Radio (Yallaradio.com), playing Jewish and Israeli music 24/7. Aside from the Seminole Hard Rock, some venues he enjoys in Miami-Dade include Temple Emmanuel in Miami Beach, Chabad in Aventura, and the Trump National Doral. He continues to innovate while enjoying South Florida’s “great weather and its people.” 786-622-5656 www.DJShqfx.com
