Thank you for enriching our lives We dedicate our May issue to celebrating the women in our lives. As we reflect on them, we are thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having self-confidence, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing is beautiful and rewarding. Inspiring and empowering the people in our own lives can come naturally. Still, the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is compelling. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down, and warmth follows. In this month’s issue, we share stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We also recognize local women entrepreneurs finding ways to give back to our community; they have inspired us. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other, perhaps even a stranger. We also encourage you to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to express thanks for their impact on your life. We are incredibly grateful for our mothers: fantastic role models who inspire us daily to be the best version of ourselves and our kind, graceful, intelligent & truly beautiful daughter Capri, who makes this world a better place. We send love and appreciation to all reading this now and are so grateful for your support. Happy Mother’s Day!

Chef Michelle Bernstein One of Miami's Culinary Stars Known for her innovative fusion of Latin food and a burst of bright, contagious laughter, Miami native James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein is one of South Florida's culinary stars. This multitasker is currently involved with three restaurants: Little Havana's Café La Trova, Bayside Marketplace's La Cañita, and Miami Beach's Sweet Liberty. She is often on national television judging culinary shows, Bernstein hosts PBS weekly series Check, Please, and the Emmy-award winning SoFlo Taste on Channel 10. Let's not forget Michelle Bernstein Catering, one of the many enterprises she heads with her husband and business partner, David Martinez. All this while raising her tween son Zach gray Martinez Beaches of Miami interviewed Chef Bernstein How do you approach projects as different as Café La Trova and Sweet Liberty? Like I approach everything, with respect and understanding that everything I work on has its breath, flavor, culture, and livelihood. As a team, we fully immerse ourselves in work one at a time to give it the consideration it deserves. Do you visit the different restaurants that you are involved with regularly? Of course, however, mainly to work with the chefs, cooks, and FOH staff during the day. We can make changes, upgrade, fix and work. How long does it take for you to prepare each installment of Check, Please? We film in about 3-4 hours; however, production time, editing, and going back to film at the restaurants we discuss, takes months. What have been the most important lessons you have learned as a female chef in South Florida? I don't consider myself a female chef; I consider myself a chef that happens to be very much a strong woman. I have a lot of pride in being a homegrown girl and having deep roots here in South Florida. I love our flavors, colors, and cultures. It's essential to understand one's culture to cook within it. Who are your most important influences as a chef? My family, this is not a who but a what (our ingredients), our diners, what they want, and how they make me better.
Chef Bernstein ready for action.

TRAVEL IN TRUE
LUXURY
If you could change some professional elements? Equal opportunity, equal pay, and maybe that the work be less physically demanding. How do you help empower young women who aspire to be chefs? By breaking the glass ceiling, open the conversation, ask the right questions, and be transparent. Give opportunities to anyone that deserves them. Be an example. How do you structure your days to fulfill your commitments while raising Zach? He comes first, always, period. I make him fresh arepas and pressed juices every morning, take him to school, make sure homework is done, and snuggle as much as he lets me. After that comes work, which I also adore! Where do you go to disconnect? Outdoors, when I work out or go for walks with girlfriends. Do you listen to music while working? Yes, and it's funny, I love all types of music. What I listen to depends on the day, the mood, the intensity in the kitchen, and what I'm making. Some dishes need more brain and focus than others that come quickly and simply. What do you need to always have with you? My sanity and a little mascara! Oh, and wipes, I'm a freak about how my hands look and smell.

Elena Cardone ENTREPENEUR, MOTHER, WIFE ARTICLE BY MARCIA MORGADO Author, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and billion-dollar empire builder Elena Cardone discusses her approach to success as a businesswoman, wife, and mother. She has built an empire with her husband of almost twenty years, real estate investor Grant Cardone. An early riser, a typical day for the energetic former model and actress, begins in front of her home computer at 6:00 AM, and physical training follows. Then it's breakfast with her daughters Scarlett and Sabrina before heading to the office for business meetings. At around 6:00 PM, she's back home to share quality time with her kids. On weekends, when the couple is not entertaining, they like to relax with the family at home in the exclusive enclave of Golden Beach, which she defines as Miami-Dade County's "hidden treasure." Cardone's active South Florida life adds to the area's patina as a place for 10X women to empower others to reach their potential while enjoying fulfilling family lives. As a powerhouse woman with numerous accomplishments, what strategies do you use to keep productive and successful in your daily routine? I keep connected to my purpose, keep a schedule, and surround myself with people who work with me, not against me. Is 10XLadies a vehicle to empower women, and how can our readers get involved? 10X Ladies is a global community of like-minded women actively interested in the success of each other. We empower and educate women to improve all areas of life, thus, elevating them to make a difference for the better on this planet, starting with themselves, their families, their communities, and eventually the world. The Series on Build an Empire Masterminds: baemastermind.com provides the tools to get women to 10X with the pillars to build the foundation for their empire. We focus on: Mindset - getting rid of blocks and barriers designed to diminish women; to small, give them the necessary tools to increase their ability to create the life they envision. Business/Finance - learning to become financially free and work as a team in a business environment for the best results. Lifestyle/Health/Wellness - health education to
permanently have the energy and body they desire to sustain the lifestyle they wish to have. Relationships - knowing who to trust to build their empire while getting on the same page with family and business, so they work cohesively towards the same goals to reach a heightened level of success. What made you and Grant decide to move to South Florida, and what do you find unique in this area? Taxes! In California, taxes went to 13%, so we moved to Florida, where the state rewards entrepreneurs. We were able to grow our business exponentially due to the move. I feel relaxed here in South Florida. It’s beautiful and feels like a working vacation, with a lovely mix of culture, family and lifestyle activities, nature, art and excellent restaurants. It has a constant allure. What are some of your favorite places in South Florida to dine or spend time with family and friends? My favorite place to dine is in my home here in Golden Beach. It is Miami-Dade's hidden treasure. When I venture out, I love all the trendy hot new restaurants and legendary Joe's Stone Crab Restaurant when I want to have stone crabs. What does a typical weekend look like for the Cardone family? We host events just about every weekend here in South Florida and bring a lot of business to the hotel industry: it loves us. So, when we aren't hosting events, we are happy to enjoy weekends at home with family. You have said: "Knowing who your true friends are is VITAL to your success." Please elaborate on that. Empires are destroyed from within: you can prepare for the blatant, obvious enemy. But the ones you let in are the ones who can potentially inflict the most harm: they have access to your information, your community, and your vulnerabilities. It's vital to know who you can trust to protect the empire. ElenaCardone.com/trust. Married since 2004, please share the principal CONTINUED >

“I feel relaxed here in South Florida. It’s beautiful and feels like a working vacation, with a lovely mix of culture, family and lifestyle activities, nature, art and excellent restaurants. It has a constant allure.” ingredients for your successful marriage. To be on the same page regarding core values personally, financially, and professionally, supporting each other to reach heightened levels of success as a couple, achieving our goals together. How has motherhood inspired you and your work empowering women? Motherhood made me realize the importance of the role that a mother is responsible for: the rearing of children to be happy, productive, contributing members of society, thus, forwarding humanity. It's an essential role in society, and I believe it is undervalued and underappreciated. I'm on a mission to restore the value of women, the family unit, and motherhood globally. Raising Scarlett and Sabrina has positively impacted your professional life: what is your approach? I give them the guidelines and parameters in which they can freely choose to live their lives and make their own decisions. However, just like in the real world, if they don't adhere to the guidelines, they will experience the consequences of those choices. What is the best advice you give mothers raising young children? Get help when you need it. You don't have to be a superhero. Have patience and respect them as the beings they are inside their little bodies. Treat them with the dignity they deserve; it generates benefits. What are your favorite family-related activities? Hanging out and just talking, jumping on our trampoline, watching a movie, swimming, having dinner, and traveling the world!
What were the most memorable and rewarding aspects of writing Build an Empire? I accomplished something that I thought was only for a chosen few. On a personal level, it rehabilitated my entire schooling years. Learning about the successes that others derive from reading the book fulfills me spiritually. Why did you take up martial arts, and how has it impacted your life? I began taking martial arts when I realized that if something terrible occurred, I could not protect myself physically without a weapon, and I wanted at least a fighting chance. It completely changed my life. It is not a sport that comes naturally to me, so I had to command my body and build it to make it function the way it does now. It took many hours of discipline to be in the gym training. I have not only gained strength physically but mentally as well. I'm more competent and trust myself to deliver when I say I will do something. I'm not afraid to take on new challenges anymore. What values do you hold dear? Honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, accountability, results-oriented, competency, and work ethic are fundamental. How would you like to be remembered? As leading the most significant female empowerment movement, inspiring women to bring sanity, stability, and order to their sphere of influence, making a difference for the better on this planet. What must you always have with you? I must have my purpose, honor, commitment, integrity, and sense of humor. What message would you like to leave for our readers? To be and do for yourself. To share yourself with the world and make a difference. Build an empire.

Eva Hughes
Impeccable style and strong convictions.
A Leader in Fashion ARTICLE BY MARCIA MORGADO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA
20
LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | L IF E + CULTURE
Behind Eva Hughes’ bright smile, soft Spanish accent, and flawless style are a work ethic and perseverance as strong as steel, which together with a commitment to family, define her. Eva returned to Miami after a twenty-year career in the editorial industry –including an eight-year stint in Mexico City, as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and CEO of Condé Nast Mexico and Latin America – carved through hard work and perseverance. Back in Miami, she redefined her professional profile. Tireless and energetic, she currently hosts a weekly podcast, Eva Talks; has established a coaching, consulting, and public speaking enterprise while being an active part of fashion industry school Instituto Maragoni's Advisory Board and the Latin American Fashion Summit.
YOU ARE CONSTANTLY INVOLVED IN EMPOWERING AND INSPIRING WOMEN TO FULFILL THEIR DREAMS. WHAT IS YOUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION? Women empowerment is a crucial issue in my new stage of entrepreneurship and professional reinvention. Through my conferences and coaching programs on leadership and personal brand, my goal is to share my own story and the challenges I faced: to equip women with the tools they need to make strategic choices in all areas of their lives and to feel that they belong at the table.
ARE YOU OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY? Absolutely! The fashion industry is evolving. The future of fashion has a new meaning now, with the advancement of artificial intelligence and NFTs, and the Metaverse. Adaptability is the name of the game. Sustainability and digitization are the two major categories determining and changing fashion in the coming years.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH ISTITUTO MARANGONI? Education is one of the most powerful resources available to provide people with the knowledge, skills, and self-confidence needed to achieve their goals. Being part of a distinguished and respectable school's advisory board and working with a top-notch faculty is an honor. Two years ago, I co-founded the first Fashion Business Entrepreneurship and Leadership Executive Program in Spanish for Istituto Marangoni Miami. I taught a course in their master's program on leadership and entrepreneurship. I am convinced that leading implies, among many other responsibilities, sharing your experiences and learning. If you have stumbled when forging your path, change the direction you are driving; reflect, meditate, and learn.
BEING CONSTANTLY ON THE GO: HOW DO YOU RELAX? Everything begins with your thoughts. You must take control of your thoughts, what you visualize, and the actions you decide to take. When I need to reboot my mindset, I disconnect from everything, talk to friends, or sometimes even spend time on my own to balance my thoughts and emotions.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR PODCASTS? The first step is to speak with the interviewed person before the podcast to frame the topic and focus. What do we want people to take away from the podcast? That is my second step. Then I develop preliminary questions.
WHERE DO YOU FEEL MOST AT EASE? At home, on my terrace. That's where I relax, go through my thoughts, and find peace of mind.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS AND FILMMAKERS? I enjoyed Influence is your superpower, a book by Zoe Chance that my sister Ana gave me. My favorite director is Christopher Nolan of Batman Begins. There is a scene where Bruce Wayne's father asks him: "Why do we fall?" He says, "So that we can rise stronger."
WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO REGULARLY? Everything! I love soundtrack music, piano, pop, country, and even reggaetón. I am also a romantic by nature, so songs that speak of love are always on my playlist.
FASHION HAS BEEN A CONSTANT IN YOUR LIFE: HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Feminine, romantic, and traditional. My motto is to wear clothes that make you feel good. Easy to wear and versatile pieces, suits, and dresses, are at the core of my wardrobe. On weekends, I go for jeans and a t-shirt!
FAVORITE FRAGRANCE Bulgari BLV II Eau De Parfum.
WHAT MAKES YOU SMILE? My nieces and nephews.
WHAT IRKS YOU? Lack of empathy and inconsistency.
WHAT MUST YOU ALWAYS HAVE WITH YOU? My phone and reading glasses.

Bla ke Roses The love of flowers
Blake Roses has served Miami-Dade and parts of Broward County for over 20 years. Even though "the flower business was not part of the plan originally, it has been a wonderful surprise and welcome addition to the family." Initially drawn to the business's entrepreneurial aspects, they soon appreciated it for its connection to nature and creativity. As Farzanah Angus explains, "it's a feel-good business that allows us to provide a special product and service for various types of occasions." Trevor and Farzanah Angus especially enjoy the "joy and appreciation" they receive from their customers. Even though they find inspiration "everywhere, from color trends, fashion, interior design," the interaction with their customers adds a more rewarding level to the process. Although they love working with all flowers, "roses and orchids are our thing." Long-stemmed roses offer a unique possibility for striking designs. Weddings are an essential part of their business and one they enjoy regardless of size. It usually takes 1-2 weeks after the initial consultation to draft a complete plan for the event. Flower choices are decided at the second meeting, depending on "wedding style, look, color scheme and budget." The Angus credit their "very experienced team" for the ability to manage whatever challenges might come up, especially when working on significant events. A reliable team is a vital component of any business, mainly when dealing with delicate materials. Blake Roses is available to help buyers use e-commerce; they understand the hesitance of some customers to decide on a flower purchase by looking at images on their website but will "help make this transaction easier." They know that the flower business is a highly personal service. Individual interaction is another reason they love their work. But they are delighted to facilitate the use of e-commerce to order flowers. For events such as Mother's Day, orders should be placed early, especially if customers are looking for specific flowers. The folks at Blake Roses will greet personal stops or online services with characteristic warmth from their bright and colorful shop in Sunny Isles Beach. blakeroses.com 18660 Collins Avenue Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160 305-792-2788

Lotus House
Lotus House A conversation with Constance Collins In 2006, the Sundari Foundation (known as Lotus House Women's Shelter) established its first facility to address homeless women in Overtown, Miami. Lotus House provides shelter and supportive services, including primary medical and mental health care, dental and eye care, and diverse counseling and training programs. A national leader in addressing the needs of homeless women and children, it is the largest women's shelter in the United States. Lotus House constitutes a refuge from the despair of homelessness and the threat of domestic violence to more than 500 women and children daily; it offers solutions to the cycle of suffering they endured. In 2021, under the Lotus House Endowment Fund, the Lotus Village –a national prototype– became a reality; it includes a holistic neighborhood health clinic with shelters to accommodate special needs individuals and families. It is also an advocacy center for public and social policies to raise awareness of the homelessness experienced by women and children on a local, state, and national level. 2004. Before joining Lotus House Women's Shelter, she practiced law. On this issue dedicated to women, Beaches of Miami interviewed Ms. Collins.
What led you to devote yourself full-time to Lotus House? Supporting, empowering, and uplifting women, youth, and children experiencing homelessness has become a true calling for me. To be honest, I set out to establish a resource center for women, and it has surpassed my imagination. We recently celebrated over 9,000 women and children sheltered by Lotus House. Many personal stories shared by the women, youth, and children we have been blessed to serve over the past eighteen years have inspired me. I grieve deeply at the violence and trauma they have experienced, the disparities, inequities, and lack of opportunities and resources. I am in awe of their perseverance and resilience, the unfailing hope for a better life for themselves and their children. I want to be in service and part of the solution, knowing we are one –not in some vague theoretical sense– but truly we fall or rise as one.
ARTICLE BY MARCIA MORGADO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LOTUS HOUSE
What is the protocol for accepting a woman to the shelter? Lotus House has a "no wrong door" policy. Women, youth, and children arrive almost daily via Lotus House direct street outreach, Miami-Dade County's Homeless Trust Outreach teams, the County's homeless assistance hotline list, and referrals from the public school system, local law enforcement, domestic violence centers, and many other agencies across the county working with women and children. Lotus House is also a direct access point for victims of domestic violence and youth, allowing us to bring them into the shelter as self-referrals. Outreach is coordinated by alumnae of Lotus House, former program participants of our programming and support, and experienced mental health professionals and victims' advocates.
Do you follow a vetting process? Upon arriving at Lotus House, women, youth, and children are welcomed with a trauma-informed, needs assessment admission process by our Intake Director, a licensed mental health counselor experienced in supporting victims of domestic violence. Through that process, our teams (clinical, health and wellness, education and employment, programming, and children's services) work together to provide a holistic, multi-faceted,
wrap-around support system that is person-centered, empowering, and tailored to their needs and those of their children. We strive to be welcoming and inclusive, knowing they have endured much before coming through our doors.
Is there a time limit for a stay at the shelter? While the average stay for women and children ranges between 6-8 months, our program model is solution-focused, designed to provide education, services, tools, and resources that assist each woman, youth, and child to heal, grow, thrive, and build the foundation for a safer, brighter future. We recognize that each action plan of those entering Lotus House will be different and focused on providing therapeutic, person-centered supports and resources for their individual unique needs. With that in mind, we understand that despite our average length of stay, there are some who may require more profound and extended support. For example, an unaccompanied female of high school age who joins us in her junior year may stay with us until she graduates and transitions to college or secures vocational training and employment. 80% of the sheltered women, youth, and children successfully exit the shelter system CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . evidence-based best practices, and people coming together at all levels of government, philanthropy, business, non-profits, and community to create change. Lotus Village is a living example of these lessons learned. With deep therapeutic support and protective factors, Lotus Village serves as a model, setting a new standard on a national level, showcasing evidence-based, best practices that end and prevent homelessness, while putting children first. It takes a village!
What would you have changed to make the shelter even more successful?
Constsnce Collins
Is there a limit to the number of children per family or an age limit for children to stay with their moms? There are no limits on the number of children accompanying mom if we have the bed capacity available, and there is no age limit for children staying with mom at Lotus House, understanding that all guests must follow Lotus House policies and that children are enrolled and attending school.
How has The Farm at Lotus House impacted the shelter's women's and children's lives? The Farm, a hi-tech self-contained hydroponic urban garden, provides a uniquely therapeutic and educational environment, including seed-to-harvest and farm-to-table educational programs. Participating women and children learn the basics of hydroponic gardening, including harvesting, transplanting, seeding, food safety, maintenance, and crop care. Then they deliver the 100% organic produce to our culinary center in Lotus Village, where it is served in the daily salad bar at lunch and dinner.
Are all women in the shelter trained to prepare healthier food? All sheltered women and children receive three healthy and nutritious meals daily, made fresh in our culinary center at Lotus Village. For those interested in participating, nutrition classes, cooking classes, and other programming are offered throughout the week, yielding a high engagement from women, youth, and children. For those who desire a culinary career, Lotus House offers a program leading to Safe Food Handler certifications from the state of Florida followed by an on-site, paid internship program in the David and Leila Center Foundation Culinary Center at Lotus Village, dispensing deeper instruction and hands-on experience in a busy professional kitchen.
What are some of the most important lessons learned since 2004? Solutions to the pressing public health issues of our time, such as homelessness, may be found through innovation,

When the new state-of-the-art facilities at Lotus Village were developed, we concentrated on maximizing our capacity to shelter as many as possible because the need was and is so great. Since then, we have recognized the importance of allocating more space for education, programming, supportive services, and operations support. We are planning the development of a new project, affectionately named the Children's Village at Lotus Village, with the recent acquisition of additional land across from Lotus Village. It will complement and expand the enriched holistic environment and services offered at Lotus Village, while serving as an innovative new neighborhood resource center with expanded educational and therapeutic supports, diverse programming and community services and resources to support the children, youth, and families of our beloved Overtown neighborhood and surrounding area. The new project will also include our long-awaited playground!
At what stage is the Children's Village project currently? The Children's Village is being sponsored by Lotus Endowment Fund, Inc. via its development subsidiary. They are completing the land acquisition and preliminary plans are already underway. We hope the project will break ground this fall with a view toward occupancy in the Fall 2023. We are asking our community to support this important project for the future of our children and urge anyone who can help to contact me – constance@lotusendowment.org.
What other projects are you working on now? In addition to the construction, development, and capital campaign for the Children's Village, we are leading an initiative for a new comprehensive national network of women's shelters. A web-based information sharing platform has been created at www.nationalwomensshelternetwork.org. I am personally traveling to and meeting with shelters across the country to help build this important initiative to raise public awareness and resources addressing the needs of women and children experiencing homelessness and the shelters that serve them. In addition to helping build the organizational capacity for these life-saving shelters, The National Women's Shelter Network will be an important information-sharing tool on best practices and innovation. As the largest women's shelter in the nation, it is appropriate that Lotus House lead the way for women and children in the fight to end homelessness. Together we are stronger.

NANCY BATCHELOR
Real Estate runs in Nancy Batchelor's family: with a real estate attorney and developer father, and an architect for mother, Nancy grew up in the business, learning the ins and outs from an early age. After graduating from college and working as a licensed real estate agent in her native Wisconsin, then Colorado and New York, she had learned important lessons when she moved to South Florida. Here, she built a solid business with nine agents on her team; together, in the last 20+ years, they have made over $1 billion in sales. Their motto is "We listen. We care. We sell." Her top producing skills are grounded in building trust among her clients, many of whom become friends. If sales projections are correct, Nancy's business will continue to grow. As she puts it in simple terms: "With the market so hot, South Florida homeowners are taking the opportunity to get top dollar for their properties. So many companies are moving here and bringing buyers from all over the country. While inventory is at a record low, my team and I have been able

to work with our clients to get them the results they want. We have over 100 years of combined experience and an array of exclusive services through Compass that will give them a leg up and help them better navigate this robust market." Nancy believes in giving back; through the Batchelor Foundation, she contributes to nonprofit organizations in South Florida, principally focused on helping children, animals, and the environment. She decompresses in the mid-Miami Beach waterfront home she shares with her husband, Jon. They relax, enjoy the lovely surroundings, and share quality time with family and friends: recharging the batteries for the work to come.
