Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. Countless spots around town are waiting to be discovered: a new restaurant with a great outdoor vibe to enjoy with friends and family or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation or taking a boat ride to find our beautiful sea life and the surrounding scenery. There is something for everyone. For our April issue, we feature the legendary and world-renowned artist, biologist, angler, conservationist, and entrepreneur Guy Harvey and his incredible foundation GHOF. You will learn more about this remarkable man while reading the cover story. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town, the best places you have been on your boating adventures, and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us a line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. Face to face with a shark.
A Conversation with Guy Harvey ARTICLE BY MARCIA MORGADO
A life dedicated to caring for the oceans Underwater exploring.

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L IFE + CULTURE
Guy Harvey, GHOF, and palette in hand.
Seeking inspiration from different habitats in different oceans, I continue my relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of the sea. A highly successful self-taught artist and a popular celebrity with over 1 million social media followers, Dr. Guy Harvey, is a marine biologist, diver, photographer, conservationist, explorer, and angler, a humanitarian committed to education for the understanding of oceans. To that end, he founded the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF) in 2008. The foundation funds scholarships to support fulltime undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Florida higher-education institutions conducting research on the biology, ecology, habitat, or management of fish in Florida's marine environment. The GHFO began a K-12 program with a marine and environmental science course designed for those grade levels. An expert on sharks, he partnered with SeaWorld in 2016 to increase the understanding of sharks in the wild. In 1999 he established the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) in partnership with Nova University's College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography for the purpose of understanding and saving the world's fish resources and biodiversity from drastic, ongoing declines. It is one of a few private organizations focused entirely on expanding scientific knowledge to conserve fish populations and maintain its biodiversity. We interviewed Dr. Harvey shortly after the Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) announced the (GHOF) as its sustainability partner, providing invaluable expertise on education and conservation to the SFC. The foundation will manage educational programs within fan fest, promoting ocean and fish conservation and coordinating interactive children's camps.
1. WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TO PAINT, AND WHAT LED YOU TO IT? I am a self-taught artist and refined my ability while away at boarding school in England. My mother was a naturalist and an artist in her own right, she encouraged my art from the early days. My interest in marine life traces back to my family fishing for marlin in Jamaica; the first one I caught was in 1973. Reading Ernest Hemmingway's novel, "The Old Man and the Sea," was a defining moment early in my career. Motivated by the adventures of Santiago struggling against a marlin, I created 44 pen-and-ink images depicting scenes from the book.
2. WHAT MEDIUM DO YOU USE TO PAINT? The need to authentically depict what I was studying is paramount to my work. In addition to photography, I made pen and ink drawings. Later, I expanded to watercolors, oil paint, and the faster-drying acrylics on canvas. Paper has size limitations; canvas or board let me paint some life-sized fish: large, majestic, and graceful, they demand a large canvas.
3. WHO ARE THE ARTISTS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST? I had a creative tie with Hemingway from an early age. Wildlife sculptor Kent Ullberg NA was and still is my mentor.
4. WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU ARE PAINTING? I listen to a great variety of music, podcasts, and Ted talks and watch many different sports. CONTINUED >

5. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST DEMANDING ARTISTIC ENDEAVOR, AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM IT? That would have to be designing the artwork for the Norwegian Escape in 2015. The hull design spans 1,065 feet in length. The most significant piece of art on the ship's bow features a sailfish, and along the hull are many turtles, stingrays, reef fish, frigate birds in flight, and the largest of all fish, the whale shark.
6. WITH SO MANY ACTIVITIES, HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME? I have to be very organized because of all my activities. However, during COVID, because we couldn't travel, I spent the first three months writing a new book, Guy Harvey's Underwater World, published in 2021.
Garbage! People who throw trash on the roadside, sidewalk, in the water, and anywhere really. Indifference to our oceans, their natural resources, and the creatures that inhabit them. The feeling of entitlement by many about marine resources. The lack of interest and unwillingness to change. It irks me that so many politicians worldwide have no idea about the natural history of sharks and rays as their numbers plummet year after year.
12. WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE MARINE ANIMAL, AND WHY? I love them all, but the blue marlin's combination of size, speed, and beauty make it one of my favorite marine animals with which to interact and to paint.
7. HOW DO YOU RELAX?
13. WHERE DO YOU FEEL MOST AT HOME?
I spend time with my family, particularly now that [wife] Gillian and I are grandparents. I do a lot of fishing and diving at home in the Cayman Islands with family and friends. I like to keep active, I don’t have the personality to just "sit on the beach". I love what I do.
Besides spending time with my family, I feel most at home on or in the water. That's where I grew up, and where I get the inspiration for my artwork.
8. ARE YOU OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE OCEANS' FUTURE?
Many aspects of my work are gratifying. The groundbreaking research work on sharks with Professor Mahmood Shivji at the GHRI/NSU. The marine industry is a multi-billion dollar economic engine that impacts local communities here in Florida. Our marine science educational curriculum focuses not only on STEAM; students benefit from eco-tourism and learning about possible marine industry career paths.
Yes, I am optimistic about the future of our oceans. Our research, education, and conservation efforts are making a difference. The need for more research is paramount. Marine ecosystems are resilient and will recover quickly if left unexploited.
9. AT WHAT AGE SHOULD WE TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY VIS A VIS OUR OCEANS? We developed and implemented a marine science curriculum for kindergarten through 12th-grade students. It is never too early to teach children responsibility; the oceans are one of our most critical natural resources, they must understand that. We have a responsibility to conserve the marine environment and maintain the biodiversity of this planet. To accomplish it, we must help educators foster the next generation of marine conservationists, and that is the goal of our new educational initiative.
10. WHAT MAKES YOU SMILE? My family; mainly my two beautiful grandchildren make me smile. The faces of schoolchildren as they watch one of our shark documentaries or when they listen to a presentation about sharks by my daughter, Jessica; when I beat my son Alex at ping pong! Experiencing family and friends catch fish, dive, and explore the wonders of the ocean.
16
11. WHAT IRKS YOU?
A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L IFE + CULTURE
14. WHAT IS THE MOST GRATIFYING ASPECT OF YOUR WORK?
15. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEANINGFUL WORK? It is incumbent on us to be good stewards of our natural resources. Everything we do, from our educational initiatives to our groundbreaking research, impacts the long-term survival of our natural resources. Our children and grandchildren depend on it. We must continue to educate and generate awareness.
16. WHAT NEW PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON? We work hard for local corporations to sponsor our marine science education and research projects. We are working on several research projects and launching our exciting educational curriculum. And we recently opened a new gallery and retail location on Las Olas Boulevard, in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Additionally, we announced at the Miami Boat Show, that the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation will benefit from the 2022 Sport Fishing Championship. This additional funding will facilitate expanding our extensive STEAM curriculum and professional development programs for teachers. In collaboration with
Guy Harvey fishing to release.
“I spend time with my family, particularly now that Gillian and I are grandparents. I do a lot of fishing and diving at home in the Cayman Islands with family and friends.” the Charles Darwin Research Institute in the Galapagos Islands, GHRI launched a new research effort on scalloped hammerhead sharks and silky sharks: two of the most overfished oceanic shark species.
17. HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED IN YOUR CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS? It's our collective responsibility to conserve the marine environment and maintain the biodiversity of this planet. I say repeatedly that it takes cash to care: purchasing Guy Harvey apparel and licensed products helps, supporting the GHOF by purchasing our Florida license plate. I invite your readers to visit our website at GuyHarvey.com.
18. WHAT MUST YOU HAVE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES? You must always have your wits about you, as these are challenging times. Before cell phones and computers, I kept a detailed daily journal. I must have it with me, particularly when I travel. It is my multi-prong log: family, travel, fishing, dive, painting, business, and thinking log: my "to do" log. Being a person whose life revolves around images, I use my phone as a photographic log of art, fishing, diving, and outdoor experiences, a library of images to draw from at any time. The iPhone has become some people's third hand, and it's easier to keep people in contact. It is a valuable tool.

Exploring Dry Tortugas National Park.
EXPLORING FLORIDA FLORIDA IS A WELLSPRING OF DIVERSE AND MAGICAL PLACES TO DISCOVER AND ENJOY ARTICLE BY MARCIA MORGADO
20
R OA D T R IP | TR AVEL
The Sunshine State merits exploring its many vacation destinations. Whether interested in picnicking, bicycling, or just relaxing under the sun or stars, the states’ wide-ranging offerings include 174 state parks, beaches, 72-degrees spring waters and waterfalls, and even mysterious caves. An annual $60 pass to visit them will allow your explorer side to unleash. There are urban sanctuaries, 38 state forests, such as the Apalachicola National Forest, Osceola National Forest, and Ocala National Forest. Wildlife is accessible through the 510 wildlife viewing sites in the Great Florida Birding Trail, the 140,000 protected acres of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. FLORIDA BEACHES If you are interested in exploring beaches, you’ve come to the ideal state. Florida is uniquely endowed in this respect. The peninsula has beaches for all tastes, from internationally known destinations to hidden gems, known only to those interested in quiet, secluded spots away from the maddening crowds. Along the East Coast, perhaps the best known are Miami Beach and Key West, with Daytona and Jacksonville to the north; Clearwater and Destin, on the Gulf of Mexico. There are beaches known for their family allure, including Hollywood Beach, on the Atlantic, Panama City Beach and Siesta Public Beach, both on the Panhandle, where you can find the secluded St. George Island. Further south and accessible only by boat are Caladesi Island State Park (an hourly ferry departing from Honeymoon Island, a bit north of Clearwater.) On Florida’s Emerald Coast, one can find the upscale Santa Rosa Beach community that includes Gulf Place, an artist’s colony. Seventy miles north of Key West, Dry Tortugas
National Park is accessible only by seaplane or boat. The imposing Fort Jefferson dominates the landscape, with sugar-like sands and turquoise waters. MIAMI-DADE: BISCAYNE NATIONAL PAR K You don’t have to travel far or even leave MiamiDade County to find the beauty of Biscayne National Park, 250 square miles of pristine water spotted with lush islands and vibrant coral reefs make boating a favorite pastime. Channels south of Caesar Creek invite canoers and kayakers to explore lagoons and creeks. Because of its shallow waters, Jones Lagoon is ideal for this activity. At the same time, Hurricane Creek is another privileged area to snorkel the mangroves and discover the thriving marine life underneath them. Bring your canoe or kayak, as the park currently doesn’t rent them. The Biscayne National Park Institute coordinates eco-tours on the Maritime Heritage Trail that offer snorkeling at a shipwreck, discovering the little-known wonders of Jones Lagoon, as well as cruises to Boca Chica Key. Watch out for the mooring buoys that signal coral reefs; boaters should exercise caution and slow down to prevent damage to the fragile ecosystems. Advanced reservations are recommended. Fishing in Biscayne Bay has been a constant activity since the Tequesta people, early settlers along Biscayne Bay, were the only residents in the area we know as Miami. The Tequesta found their principal sustenance in the waters surrounding their settlements. What was a basic necessity has become a relaxing pastime, but fishing has never ceased in the area. These days fishing in the park is regulated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which requires a valid Florida fishing license.

MONROE: FROM JOHN PENNEKAMP TO STUNNING SUNSETS A short trip from Miami-Dade to Monroe county will offer a variety of activities, from snorkeling in Key Largo to scuba diving in Looe Key, with more than 150 species of fish and 50 types of coral populating the 800 yards long, 200 yards wide reef. There’s the option of taking a cruise on the Spirit of Pennekamp, where visitors aboard the 65-foot glass-bottom high-speed catamaran can peek into the reef while traveling to different spots in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Whether snorkeling or star gazing, Bahia Honda State Park is a favorite. It is the darkest point in the Florida Keys. At night, get comfortable and look into the sky for an unforgettable display. The park coordinates two stargazing programs each month: the Florida Keys Astronomy Club hosts Friday night’s program when they install telescopes for the stargazers; Saturday’s program consists of a stroll to the Old Bahia Honda Bridge for naked-eye viewing. Or one can opt to relax and take in the easy-going air of Key West. At the southernmost city in the United States, you can visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum or stop at Sloppy Joe’s, the author’s favorite hangout. Don’t leave Key West before taking in one of its spectacular sunsets. Florida will be waiting when your adventuresome side is ready to explore some unique destinations.

Chandelier created by splicing together components of other light fixtures.
Jorge Pardo at MOAD AN EXPLORATION OF THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE THROUGH ART
Jorge Pardo, recognized for his elaborate installations, explores the immigrant experience in Mongrel, the site-specific installation currently on view at the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD). In Mongrel, he examines the hyphenated idiosyncrasies of exiles. Pardo relives and shares memories from the time he left his native Cuba as a child and, along with thousands of his compatriots, was welcomed at the historic Freedom Tower, which now houses MOAD. Here we find a space of reflection accomplished by recreating an interior that conveys the sense of exile, loss, and fragmentation. Still, in the colors and textures, we also find light and the possibility of fulfillment. The Museum’s largest gallery is transformed into interior domestic spaces that resonate with familiarity. Twenty-five drawings explicitly created for this installation hang on this living area’s walls. Pardo manipulates personal images into near abstractions through computer, resizing, superimposing, colorizing, thus conveying mood and emotion rather than specific memories. The drawings, printed on Guarro paper, dialogue with the chandeliers –assembled from splicing together elements from other light fixtures– and the carpet, both expressly made for this exhibit. Modernist chairs are inspired in the butaques, a classic Latin American furniture familiar to Cuba and Mexico, where the artist lives, thus closing the circle from remembrances to actuality. Mongrel, at the Museum of Art and Design, through May 1, 2022

Tuna Tartare
Villa Azur springs from a desire to transform dining into a vibrant experience. It fuses fine dining, creative mixology, and personalized service with musical collaborations as the champagne flows and a French Mediterranean air permeates the 8,000 square feet of Villa Azur, the seductive restaurant and lounge. The tree-lined open-air courtyard, ideally suited for a delicious meal, spills into indoor salons furnished with the welcoming white tufted sofas that we find outside and elaborate chandeliers. Each night features a different musical style, from a jazzy saxophonist to a rock guitarist. As the evening progresses and music pumped by DJ Yes takes center stage, a party vibe sets in, encouraging patrons to dance the night away, and they do. We share one of Villa Azur’s more popular appetizers with our readers: tuna tartare. Tuna • 4 oz Ahi tuna diced in small cubes • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil • Pinch salt • Pinch black pepper • Combine these ingredients in a mixing bowl and keep it very cold. Orange Sauce • 1 cup orange juice • One tsp yuzu juice • 1/2 gr bonito flakes • One teaspoon of lemon juice • Strain the juices to remove any pulp. Reduce for about 20 minutes, add the bonito flakes. After 5 minutes, strain again to remove any impurities and cool down. Add the rest of the ingredients and cool down the sauce.
