Local Love

February 2022 PUBLISHER S

Dawn Cooper | dawn.cooper@citylifestyle.com Edward Cooper | edward.cooper@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart – a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and Valentines this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. We hope that you enjoy this issue and find solace and inspiration in the beauty around you.

Spreading Love and Positi vity

WHETHER SHE’S TALKING ABOUT PHILANTHROPY OR BUSINESS, FOR JENIYA PENROD, THE CITY OF MIAMI IS ALWAYS IN HER HEART ARTICLE BY ANDY CINGOLANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALESSANDRA FIORINI

14

T R E N D SE T T E R | A RTS + CULTURE

At 19 years old, Jeniya Penrod emigrated from Russia to the United States, arriving in New York. About a month after she arrived, she traveled to Miami and fell in love... with the city she calls home to this day. “I remember walking on Ocean Drive with the beach right there and someone had built these huge sandcastles,” Jeniya said. “Beautifully decorated with candles inside them. It was art. And there was music coming from every direction. And there was always movement, always action, always something happening. I thought, ‘What is this place?’ The energy was just so high, so vibrant. It was amazing!” Not even out of her teens yet, she quickly realized that this was the place where she wanted to build her life. “I would describe it as love at first sight,” Jeniya said. “After that experience, I decided to stay without knowing what I was going to do and what was going to happen for me. I just kind of trusted that it was the best decision for me, and it was, because right now I live in a city that I so dearly love.” Today, Jeniya pursues a wide range of business and philanthropic interests focused on her local community, as well as several more far-reaching projects, such as volunteering with the Global Empowerment Mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to being a first responder when natural disasters hit vulnerable populations.

“I started getting really involved in charity work and GEM when Hurricane Dorian practically destroyed the Bahamas (in 2019),” she said. “We have property there and it was completely demolished, completely destroyed. So I flew there a few times in the first couple of months and I saw the devastation first-hand. That touched me on a personal level really, really deeply and I decided that I wanted to be part of the solution.” Among her business interests, Jeniya expects to announce the launch of a hospitality company with a partner very soon.

“I remember walking on Ocean Drive with the beach right there and someone had built these huge sandcastles, beautifully decorated with candles inside them. It was art. “Our company will focus on working with local charities to bring exciting experiences to people while giving back to the city of Miami,” she said. “We have organized a couple of events in the past and it's something we're very interested in doing. We'll have an announcement soon and provide more details at that time.” Jeniya also owns Chamillion, a color-changing image editing app that is used to alter the look of clothing, hair, accessories, interior design, logos, and more. “One of my favorite sayings, something I try to follow as much as possible, is to ‘spread love and positivity.’ Miami has given so much to me and it is truly a city I love, so it's important to me to return the love and positivity in everything I do.”

planning the perfect romantic picnic NOTHING SAYS, “I LOVE YOU” LIKE SITTING ON A BLANKET WITH A BEAUTIFUL VIEW AND ENJOYING A PICNIC TOGETHER. ARTICLE BY ANDY CINGOLANI

If it’s been a while since the last time you surprised your spouse or significant other with a truly romantic and unique date, Valentine’s Day will be here soon. In fact, this may be the perfect opportunity to take him or her on a picnic, and there are plenty of places around Miami Beach that are perfect for a lover’s picnic. Packing a picnic lunch and heading for a spot on open grass with a scenic view is the perfect way to create memories that will last forever. Picnics are a throwback to a more traditional time when it was a far more popular activity. A picnic is a relaxing way to enjoy a meal that doesn’t cost a lot of money, and you don’t feel pressured to finish your food and get out of there. Instead, it can just be the two of you sitting on a blanket spread out over the plush grass, leisurely enjoying your meal while you gaze upon waves crashing on the beach, kids playing in a park, or butterflies doing their delicate dance in a garden of colorful blossoms. At Let Love In Picnics, they are happy to create the perfect romantic setting for a Valentine’s Day picnic, as well as catering to special occasions like bridal showers, marriage proposals, birthdays, anniversaries, and more. Typically, the packages they offer include fresh lemonade and water, food and light snacks, activities like board games, decorations, and a shade teepee if desired. Complete setup and cleanup are also included.

To pull off the perfect romantic picnic, here are a few tips to keep in mind: Choose the right menu. While it’s important to pick food that you both really enjoy, avoiding items that are too messy will help with the “romance” part. For example, with the right preparation and seasoning, you can create a delicious turkey breast sandwich that’s easy to handle, as opposed to pulled pork barbecue, which can end up all over your shirt if you’re not careful. You should also consider avoiding food that’s too greasy or too spicy, because indigestion could be a real mood killer! Be cautious with alcoholic beverages. Taking a bottle of wine or champagne with you on a picnic is definitely a romantic thought. However, call ahead to the locations you are considering to make sure it’s allowed. Public parks, for example, have laws prohibiting the consumption of alcohol. Even if you’re planning your picnic for a non-public space, it’s a good idea to check first. Don’t forget the essentials. An old-fashioned picnic basket will add a note of tradition and warmth to your romantic event. These are available at many retail locations, as well as online. If you can’t find a picnic basket, try packing everything with a large, attractive piece of cloth, tying the corners together. The last thing you want to do for this picnic is throw everything CONTINUED >

into a plastic bag or an old, beat-up backpack. Also, use real silverware instead of plastic utensils, which are just plain tacky for this occasion. Put some thought into the location. The main reason you’re going on a picnic is for the view. Otherwise, you could just as easily eat a sandwich sitting at your kitchen table. Public parks, private gardens open to the public, and beaches are all great places for your romantic picnic. In fact, there are quite a few places near Miami Beach that are perfect, such as:

South Pointe Park 1 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139

The Barnacle Historic State Park 3485 Main Hwy, Miami, FL 33133

Oleta River State Park 3400 NE 163rd St, North Miami Beach, FL 33160

Amelia Earhart Park 401 E 65th St, Hialeah, FL 33013

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park 1200 Crandon Blvd, Key Biscayne, FL 33149

A.D. “Doug” Barnes Park 3401 SW 72nd Ave, Miami, FL 33155

Tropical Park 7900 SW 40th St, Miami, FL 33155

Finally, remember to bring a garbage bag so you can pack up any wrappers or other trash and take it with you. After all, one thing that’s definitely not romantic is littering.

ARTICLE BY ANDY CINGOLANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY LE CHOCOLATIER

The SWEET LIFE Nothing says happy Valentine’s Day like deliciously hand-crafted chocolates.

In 1980, Joseph and Marlene Marmor opened Le Chocolatier Fine Handmade Chocolate with a vision of bringing the most delicious, tempting chocolates and unique gifts to the people of Miami. Originally from Romania, they lived in Montreal and New York before planting permanent roots in Miami. “We knew that if we kept intensively and exclusively focused on quality, taste, and presentation, we would be successful,” Joseph said. “That’s our approach in the kitchen. We have a devoted team of chocolate artisans truly dedicated to their craft.” While premium-quality chocolates are a welcomed treat any time of year, Valentine’s Day is an annual opportunity for Le Chocolatier to shine. “One of our most popular items is a gift box of fine chocolates with different greetings,” he said. “Like ‘Love,’ ‘Best Friends,’ ‘Happy Valentine’s Day,’ and more. Chocolate roses are also a big hit this time of year and chocolate-dipped strawberries are very popular.” Local delivery is available. Le Chocolatier is located at 1840 NE 164th St, N Miami Beach, FL 33162. For more information, visit lechocolatier.com.

And buzz-worthy hotspots like Swan, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, and Le Jardinier make any night out special. Finally, for dessert, there are multiple artisanal ice cream experiences on hand. More than 20 years ago, Miami native Craig Robins recognized the potential of the Miami Design District,

and started acquiring buildings in the neighborhood. His goal was to reinvigorate a forgotten part of Miami, transforming it into a unique creative community through exceptional architecture, design and experiences. This singular vision for the neighborhood has now been realized. Today, the District is a vibrant community where residents and visitors enjoy amazing shopping, chef-driven restaurants, world-class museums and abundant outdoor space. Like all true neighborhoods, the Miami Design District continues to evolve, with plans for more amazing shops, restaurants and galleries, as well as a boutique hotel and residences.

“Amazingly, one of the original family members still had the recipe for La Original, an amber lager that we’re now brewing again on site.” In 2020, Cervecería La Tropical opened its doors in a new Wynwood location, welcoming customers to the brewery and restaurant for the first time. This, however, is not just a story about a trendy new dining establishment. It's the compelling story of a place with roots that date back more than 130 years, and a history that started in Cuba. The Blanco-Herrera family established Cervecería La Tropical in 1888. By the late 1950s, La Tropical produced more than 60% of the beer brewed in Cuba. The brand became known throughout the world and, at the time, La Tropical was a point of pride for the island nation, along with cigars, rum, and music. “When La Tropical was thriving in Cuba, it stood on a piece of land that was very large,” said Irina Zabelina, brand marketing manager. “That allowed it to be much more than just a brewery. It was also an entertainment space where it became like a rite of passage for up-and-coming artists in Cuba to perform there. It had tropical gardens that spread out over the majority of its property.” With the Cuban Revolution, however, Cervecería La Tropical was seized by the government and in December 1960, the family fled to Miami. Now, after nearly four decades of dormancy followed by a 23-year struggle to regain the brand, La Tropical has a new life in the family's adopted homeland. “Amazingly, one of the original family members still had the recipe for La Original, an amber lager that we’re now brewing again on site,” Irina said. “It's been modified to adapt to modern brewing equipment, but it's the same basic recipe. About four years ago, we partnered with another craft brewery in the area to launch La Original and it was a great success. At the time, people were waiting four hours just to get into the brewery, it was so popular.” Cervecería La Tropical is located at 42 NE 25th Street in Wynwood. BEVERAGES PERFECT FOR VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and that means it’s time to celebrate with your sweetheart! This year, as you raise your glass to toast love and romance, try one of these tasty beverages, each creatively and perfectly named for the occasion.

Bésame

Cherub’s Cup

We scoured the Internet – and polled a few bartenders – searching for the most appropriate beverages for a fun, delicious Valentine’s Day Happy Hour. While there were plenty of contenders, these four were the ones that really stood out. B É SA M E : This cocktail’s name means “kiss me” in Spanish, so it’s perfect for a Valentine’s Day toast. One of the main ingredients of a Bésame cocktail is Agavero tequila, which is created from a blend of blue agave añejo and reposado tequilas, hand-blended with the essence of the Damiana flower. The cocktail also includes whole raspberries, passion fruit juice, and Chambord, garnished with lime wedges or fruit of choice and served in a cocktail glass.

Love Potion #9

CHE R U B’S C U P: The Cherub’s Cup can easily become a new favorite for just about any time of year. Simultaneously sweet and dry with a hint of intriguing and refreshing flavors, it’s perfect for a romantic celebration. The recipe includes elderflower liqueur, which is fantastic against the recipe’s strawberry and sparkling wine. And, whether you’re a fan of vodka or gin, either can form the foundation of this cocktail. LOVE POT I O N #9 : It’s not just a hit song from the 1960s. Love Potion #9 is a tasty frozen cocktail made with strawberry vodka, vanilla ice cream, and white crème de cacao liqueur, served in a chocolate-rimmed glass. And because it has just 1½ ounces of liquor, it’s a gentle, low-proof drink that can be enjoyed before or after a romantic dinner or while having a drink with your sweetheart. PASS I O N C O C KTA I L: One way to describe the Passion Cocktail is that it’s like a Tequila Cosmopolitan. This festive pink cocktail recipe combines tequila with cranberry, lime, and orange liqueur, specifically, Grand Marnier. This tequila drink perfectly complements a dinner for two, especially Mexican cuisine because the sweet fruits offset the spiciness of the food.
