MEET THE ELLIS FAMILY: SHANE, AMBER, COOPER AND LAYLA. Amber had no idea what the future would hold when she met Shane. At the time, they were both in school at CSUB. Amber considered herself more of a city girl, and Shane had spent his childhood in a more rural setting. They fell in love and married. Shane is director of operations of KCSI Aerial Patrol, and Amber is a substitute teacher, oversees the farm and has many other projects underway. Now after two children—Cooper, 12; and Layla, 10—the Ellis family resides in a charmingly renovated vintage house built in 1940. The original house was located on Calloway and later moved to its current Johnson Road location. Life on the farm is never dull. There’s always something to do, someone to feed, someone to clean up after and someone to love. The other residents include four dogs: Louis, Clark, Sadie and Cowboy; two cats, Harry and Sophie; and four new kittens that just found their way to the farm. Horses, goats, chickens, a miniature donkey and a pot-bellied pig named Zippy round out the roster. Many of the animals have been rescued and mercifully have found a slice of paradise in the loving care of the Ellis clan. No wonder theirs is the go-to house for all the neighborhood kids.

Dakota is the newest resident on the farm. She is a mare whose fate seemed doomed until the family saved her. Layla immediately bonded with Dakota and seemed to empathize with the little horse. She says she loves Dakota and feels happy that she has been saved. Dakota has a surprise for the family; she appears to be pregnant. So the ever-growing family will soon add yet another member. Zippy and a miniature horse named Cash are best friends. They spend their days together bathing in the sun, watching antics of all the other animals and enjoying their peaceful home. Despite this idyllic life, Zippy can be somewhat mischievous. He occasionally wanders off to check out the neighbor’s property. He recalls that since day one, he knew he was destined to change the lives of Bakersfield’s kids as well as 7,200 children throughout the county. Zane’s vision helped the organization build a modern, state-of-the-art recreation facility named the E.L. Jack and Monica Armstrong Youth Center. Since the beginning, the club’s mission is “To enable all young people especially those who need us most to reach their full potential as productive, caring responsible citizens.“ SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The club provides pathways for children to realize their dreams, attain their ambitions, explore new interests and grow as individuals. Character and leadership skills are important components emphasized by a caring and trained staff. Nutritious meals are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A vast array of programs are offered, including education and career development, health and life skills, visual and performing arts, writing, sports, fitness and health. The club provides services for infants and toddlers up to older teens. CHANNELING THE POTENTIAL Every child has potential, and the challenge becomes how to channel the energy, redirect the flow and encourage positive behavior. For more than 20 years, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kern County has provided guidance, inspiration, opportunity, encouragement and instruction to thousands of Kern’s children. Barks and Books is a therapeutic and educational program where children read to dogs in libraries. Pawsitive Change gives inmates a chance to rehabilitate themselves by learning to be dog trainers, an employable skill after their release. Miracle Mutts is a community outreach program in Kern County that utilizes therapy dogs for social and emotional enrichment, addiction recovery and job training. The Mutt Militia is a group of dog lovers who are dedicated to the abolition of unnecessary euthanasia. The dogs utilize their healing powers to benefit residents at various senior centers, New Advances for People with Disabilities and The Mission of Kern County. They also have a spay and neuter program to help control Kern’s dog population. Today, Marley’s Mutts occupies a ranch set in the peaceful hills of Tehachapi. HAS
TOUCHED THE LIVES OF SO MANY CHILDREN IN BAKERSFIELD. Her caring and gentle manner has nurtured children for 46 years. She says she knew she wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl. She admired her own teachers as she was growing up in Berkley, and she loved school. After graduating from Berkley, she and her husband, Jim, spent a year and a half in France during Jim’s Army deployment. They moved to Bakersfield in 1969. Jim had completed his Ph.D. and was offered a position at CSUB. Dee enrolled in a Master’s program in reading and language arts. She taught graduate studies at CSUB for a while. Then Dee started teaching fourth grade and was called upon to serve as principal at Wayne Van Horn Elementary School. In 1991, she was asked to open Christa McAuliffe Elementary. Dee’s later became the first sitting board member at PanamaBuena Vista Schools. After a long and distinguished career, the district unanimously voted to name the new elementary school after the beloved educator. The Dolores S. Whitley Elementary School will open for the new school year this month with approximately 850 students. The new school was designed by Ordiz-Melby Architects. Some of the modules that comprise the buildings were constructed off-site and transported to the McKee Road location. The campus features a central courtyard, playgrounds and athletic fields on almost 15 acres. The school mascot will be a bear, a tribute to Dee’s alma mater, UC Berkley. A mural by Nancy Putney in the multi-purpose building also features a bear. Lisa Beasley is principal. A grand opening and dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 28. Thank you, Dee, for your commitment, talent and a lifetime of caring. 38
