not aware of just how much is going on there. It has a true arts and entertainment district. A great boutique hotel, The Padre, good food, great bars, art galleries, antique stores and live music abound. Like the downtown America of many cities and towns, life had long ago migrated to the suburbs and malls. But for visionary entrepreneurs, empty stores and general decay in Bakersfield presented opportunities to revitalize what had been a hive of activity until the '70s and '80s. And for those old enough to remember the '50s, a visit to the Woolworths Diner is a time tunnel back to less complicated times. Your town probably had a soda counter like it. It’s truly a time warp that’s faithful in every detail. The prices aren’t at '50s levels, but a hamburger is still about half what you’d pay at a café. Take time to grab a burger and milkshake—and just relax a while.

NEED A LITTLE ESCAPE? Didn’t get an opportunity to schedule some much-needed time away lately? We’re all aware of the value of rest. It’s beneficial to mind, body and soul—but can be oh so difficult to capture! But taking a break is key to avoiding burnout and renewing your daily lease on life. Having a place to unplug and unwind can help balance a too-busy schedule. Create your own little space that helps you flip the “off” switch to enjoy a little something you love. Light a candle in a nature-inspired fragrance, enjoy a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Snuggle up for a nap or let your mind wander to another time or place, immersing yourself in the pages of a good book. Or, just do nothing! Create calm in your little oasis inspired by a relaxing color palette. They call them spa colors for a reason. A comfy chair or chaise, a little table, a good read or a soft throw for a snooze, whatever renews your soul and helps you enjoy the present for a moment.

BOXING AND KICKBOXING 20
Bakersfield Lifestyle | January 2018
JANUARY IS BAKERSFIELD LIFESTYLE’S "ACTIVE" ISSUE. So, we took a look at what’s happening in local fitness. If you’re hoping to discover a new direction in your own health and fitness pursuit, we hope you find something here that enlightens or inspires you.
TOTAL WOMAN FITZONE 5329 TRUXTUN AVE. BAKERSFIELD, CA 93309 661.325.0208
“Kickboxing has been an important part of maintaining my own fitness,” Leigh says.
Conventional wisdom says that boxers are among the fittest athletes on the planet. They spar for hours, and it’s aerobic, it builds strength and muscle, improves balance and discipline, and creates a lean and muscled physique that’s never muscle-bound—less than 10 percent body fat. So, with the growth of mixed martial arts (MMA), kicks have become part of what is now known in exercise circles as kickboxing. It engages the entire core—both upper and lower body—in high-intensity workouts with loud pulsating music that drives energy in the room. Total Woman FitZone is a 20+ year-old Bakersfield institution. Owner Leigh Pozas is the guiding force behind one of the most comprehensive fitness operations in Bakersfield. She’s also a primary instructor for boxing and kickboxing. Exercisers wear heart rate straps and can visually track optimal aerobic zone heart rates to maximize the benefits of building strength and burning calories. It’s fun, high energy and the strength and weight loss gains provide all the motivation anyone needs.

Bakersfield Lifestyle | January 2018
CROSSFIT CROSSFIT CRAZY HOUSE 1759 ELZWORTH ST. BAKERSFIELD, CA 93312 661.477.1135 In simplest terms, CrossFit is bursts of intensely strenuous exercises, followed by short rests. But it’s so much more. It’s about 60 minutes of sweat that pushes your body to today’s limits. It’s been called by some the world’s most “beautifully addictive” workout. CrossFit has enjoyed continuous growth in reaching 15,000+ locations globally today. Jennifer Wright, founder and owner of Crossfit Crazy House, has developed a viral and passionate following in Bakersfield. The incredibly fit mother of three is both a certified physical trainer and CrossFit-certified. She has found her life’s mission during her six years of operating CrossFit Crazy House. Workouts are purpose-built to focus on different body parts and muscle groups. But the real beauty of how Jennifer goes about it is that each client can bite off only what they can manage today. You take on greater intensity when you’re ready. Above all, she wants clients to succeed. "Whether it’s to build strength, lose weight, gain confidence and flexibility, we can build the right program," she says. And, she says members feel like part of an extended family, She has worked with people from ages 4 to 70+. A Masters Challenge class for clients 55 and older has been very popular.

MAKE THE MOST OF 15 MINUTES! A 15-MINUTE HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING WORKOUT
1.
ARTICLE LEIGH POZAS OF TOTAL WOMAN FITZONE | PHOTOGRAPHY ALI WHYTE
FITTING IN EXERCISE CAN BE CHALLENGING, SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE THE MOST OF ANY TIME YOU HAVE. This quick 15-minute high-intensity interval training workout is perfect for both cardiovascular health and muscular strength.
2.
WARMUP Important: Start with a warmup—it is critical to change the blood flow and distribute it throughout the body to fuel the muscles— and avoid injury. Start by marching in place and increasing the height of the knees as you get warmed up. After 1-2 minutes turn it into a jog in place, high knees, then, if possible, a series of jumping jacks. Take at least 5-7 minutes to warm up.
24
Bakersfield Lifestyle | January 2018
3.
SIDE TO SIDE STEP WITH BAND ON LEGS
A miniband is a great tool for working out at home or on the road. They’re cheap, effective and light—and take up very little space! Place miniband around legs just above the ankles. Keep knees slightly bent and step side to side, keeping the band taut. The bigger the steps, the harder the exercise. The intensity can be increased by adding a little side to side leap instead of a step. Do this 10-12 times for three sets. This works the legs, hips and glutes, as well as keeps the heart rate up for cardio gains.
PUSHUPS The pushup is a perfect exercise that can be modified for all levels. Pushups engage almost all parts of the body, including the core, chest, back, shoulders, glutes and even the legs a little. Adding the miniband around the ankles amps up the benefits for the lower body. Pushups can be done on the feet, knees or even on a stable chair or against the wall. In all cases, it’s important to keep the head in line with the body and the core tight. Draw the abs in like you are pulling your belly button into your spine. Arms should be far enough out to create a 90-degree angle when at the bottom of the move and are in line with the chest. There is no need to take the chest all the way to the floor. Stop when elbows create a 90-degree angle and push back up. Repeat 8-12 times for three sets.
It is important to work the core, which is more than just the abs. The core involves everything from below
AB EXERCISE WITH BAND
the neck to above the hips. This exercise may be done with or without the miniband. Using the miniband adds leg strength to the exercise as a bonus! If using miniband, place it around the feet—not the ankles. Sit back in a V position and engage abs. Hands can be placed behind for balance or lifted for more balance and difficulty. If sitting up is too difficult, then the exercise can be done in a cone lying down. Bring one knee in as the other leg pushes out and repeat 10-12 times. Repeat for three sets. Always complete a workout with a cool down and gentle static stretches. The blood flow needs to slow down gradually, so muscles are warm enough to stretch safely. January 2018 | Bakersfield Lifestyle

A STUDENT ATHLETE AND HER PERSONAL TRAINER CARR ELITE, ELITE TRAINING FOR ATHLETES OF EVERY SPORT AND ADULT FITNESS
AS A COLLEGE SOCCER PLAYER BACK HOME IN BAKERSFIELD FOR SUMMER BREAK, I DISCOVERED CARR ELITE, ELITE TRAINING FOR ATHLETES OF EVERY SPORT AND ADULT FITNESS. So, after many years of self-directed training, workout routines and sports drills, I felt I needed to raise the bar on ways to increase my speed, explosiveness and strength with improved agility and acuity. Carr Elite was exactly what this goalkeeper needed. ERIC MAHANKE Eric is the head strength and conditioning coach at Carr Elite. He and best friends David and Derek Carr, quarterback of the Oakland Raiders, founded Carr Elite with the idea of helping serious athletes enhance their competitive skills, strengthen their bodies and increase mental acuity and toughness. The programs are custom designed based on the athletic and fitness goals of each individual. Eric, as a professional athlete himself, knew precisely how to take my training to the next level in sessions that were different than anything before. The schedule—alternating mornings and afternoons, with a range of exercises kept the body off guard—weight training on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with agility drills on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Eric is dedicated to helping us become the best versions of ourselves we can be. His biggest frustration is not being able to help everyone. Desire and commitment are critical ingredients.
“Fad diets are killing people,” Eric says. As a father of two kids, it frustrates him to see kids eating junk and not exercising. He eats no grain and consumes plenty of protein. His cheat meal is sushi or maybe an occasional hamburger. 34
