until recently we didn’t even have to have a professional sports team to be athletically STYLISH. Coach Royal, Mack Brown, Ben Crenshaw, Lance Armstrong, Tom Kite, Rich Beem, and The Undertaker call themselves Austinites. Only in Austin can one High School deliver 3 Super Bowl winning players all wearing the same number, Westlake’s; Drew Brees, Nick Foles, and Justin Tucker wore STYLISH #9. Part of our STYLE is our sayings, “Keep Austin Weird”, “Alright, Alright, Alright”, “Hook ‘em”, “The Live Music Capital of the World”. No matter how you slice it, we have STYLE. Admit it, you see it in a stranger’s eyes when you tell them, “I’m from Austin”. You are suddenly different, unique, intriguing, talented, adventurous, dare I say, “sexy”? This issue of Austin TX Lifestyle is chock-full of Austinites, Longhorns and more places and brands that make our city sizzle with STYLE.

WATCHING AUSTIN GROW IN STYLE
DAN AND SYLVIA SHARPLIN BEGAN THEIR LOVE AFFAIR WITH AUSTIN IN 400 SQUARE FEET OF UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS MARRIED STUDENT HOUSING IN CLARKSVILLE. They were young graduate students at the University of Texas and at $220 per month the price was right. As Sylvia likes to say, “Austin captured our ARTICLE STEPHANIE CALLIHAN PHOTOGRAPHY CRAIG WASHBURN AND CASEY WOODS
hearts from the moment we arrived, especially Clarksville.” After they both completed their MBAs at the University of Texas, they headed West looking for career opportunities that weren’t available in Texas in the late 80’s. When they packed up their belongings, they left a piece of their heart in Austin. Their hope was to one day return to this city that they dearly loved.
12
Austin TX Lifestyle | September 2021
Following the birth of their first child after living through a few earthquakes and fires they knew it was time to return to Austin. Dan and Sylvia have three children that grew up in Westlake. When the last one flew from the nest, they began their search for the perfect piece of property back where it all began, Clarksville. Their check list for the perfect property was very specific. First, there must be a view of both the Texas Tower and the Texas State Capitol. Second, walkability to downtown and their favorite Clarksville spots. As you can imagine the number of properties on the market that achieved their wish list was zero. Dan and Sylvia knew finding this property would take time, creativity, and patience. They spotted their future home one day while driving the streets of Clarksville looking for their view. They approached the current owner, and the negotiating began.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)
The home was a typical small Clarksville Craftsman cottage, but it had a view from the 40 Acres to downtown. They knew this powerful view of their ever growing and changing city would never get old. With the guidance of their talented and patient architect Jim LaRue they began the process of creating their dream home. The historic front of the house was restored to its original beauty. The entry hall is the only interior of the home that stayed the same. Once you cross beyond the entry the home becomes a light filled oasis with a modern interior and 14-foot ceilings. When you look to the East you see it, the perfect unobstructed view of the town Dan and Sylvia fell in love with. The project took 4 years, but the Sharplins consider this time well spent. They designed every detail of the home to fit their lifestyle and to stay a while to enjoy their view.
14
Austin TX Lifestyle | September 2021
Through this process Sylvia realized she was not only passionate about Austin and the Clarksville neighborhood, but also about real estate. Over 4 years she gained an immense education on historic properties, building and permitting in a historic neighborhood, and how to redesign a historic home respectfully. Sylvia is now a Real Estate professional with Wilson Goldrick where she spends her days helping others find their dream home or location. These two devoted Longhorns and Austinites have called Austin home for over 30 years. They are generous to their city and alma mater through philanthropic involvement. In their down time you will most often find these two on their deck with a margarita taking in their view.

Eagles, the Opry House, as it was affectionately called during both iterations, hosted the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Jones, Lou Reed, Neil Young, James Brown, BW Stevenson, and Jerry Jeff Walker. For the grand opening on June 28, 1977, Austin was treated to a Willie extravaganza playing every night for a solid week. South Congress Avenue back in those days was not what it is today. But you knew when you walked through the doors of the Opry House magic could happen. Seeing Stevie Ray Vaughn play otherworldly licks on his guitar on that stage is an experience that is hard to match to this day. The Arlyn recording studios on the site are still cranking out the tunes. From the early Terrace days through the Opry House venues to today’s extraordinary redevelopment into Hotel Magdalena and the other spectacular living, eating and retail destinations, Music Lane WAS and IS an iconic experience for visitors and Austinites alike. This gem of property on South Congress has always been the stylish soul of our city.

At 35 she is young and refreshing with the wisdom of an old soul. As a former athlete and coach, she understands the industry of sport and she is definitely all in as a member of the team. As a woman of faith, she trusts that Austin and the Longhorn nation is exactly the place where she and Coach Sarkisian are meant to be.

Checking off the boxes for Loreal is also being in a place that will allow her to be true to herself and to successfully navigate the many roles she will be playing. A former track star (she ran the 100 m hurdles in less than 13 seconds) and coach at USC, she understands the mental and physical stress experienced by athletes and looks forward to connecting with the players as the “team mom”. “UT is the home away from home for our players and I want them to be comfortable and feel safe. It is important to know that they are supported not only by the university and the coaches but that I am there for them. I want to provide the female ear and let them know that I understand what it means to be an athlete. No one pressures an athlete more than they themselves do and I get it. Because I’ve been a coach and an athlete, I believe I can be an asset with a unique perspective when it comes to supporting not only my husband but also the team.”

Loreal’s desire to inspire and empower people has been her North Star in both her career and her life purpose. “I want to be a resource to help people become the best version of themselves they can possibly be. We are all works in progress and we all need help sometime.” Loreal has combined her love of fashion and people to build a brand, Loreal Luciano (https:// lorealluciana.com/) as a professional stylist. Backed by a wonderful team, she advises everyone from CEOs to athletes and celebrities to ordinary people on ways to look and feel their best with an emphasis not only on clothing and accessories but also on fitness, health and wellness. “A person’s style speaks for them before they can speak for themselves. It is so much more than choosing a trendy or a chic outfit. In order to present your best self, you have to be fit and confident - mentally and physically - before you even look in your closet. I hope I can inspire people to do more than see my fashions. I sincerely believe that style encompasses the big picture including health and wellness. Being authentic and genuine allows you to express yourself in different ways.” Inspiration and empowerment are also key ele-

It is the pillar of her philanthropy and the Loreal Sarkisian Foundation she is in the process of creating. “I learned firsthand and early from my parents that helping others was part of living my faith. With an optimistic and creative spirit, Loreal is looking forward to becoming a member of the Longhorn Nation. On game day all eyes may not be on the field as the First Lady of Gameday arrives. Loreal describes her style as classic but a bit edgy, sophisticated with a hint of spice and timeless with a nod to Longhorn colors and tradition. Although her website (https://lorealsarkisian.com/ gameday-looks/) gives a sneak peek of game day looks with more to come, Loreal wasn’t certain she could pull off burnt orange or wear cowboy boots. “At first I struggled with burnt orange because I couldn’t find it in many pieces of clothing. I’m also aware of making sure whatever I wear compliments my skin tone. I love white but I wanted to find some other pairings and looks. Once I got into it and started pairing it with colors I love like navy, olive green, black and grey I was all in. And on game day you will see me wearing not only trendy boots but cowboy boots. I always wondered what the hype was about and never owned a pair before coming to Austin. Now my closet has a place of honor for them. I have ordered a pair of custom boots from L.M. Easterling in Fredericksburg so I can feel like a true Texan.” No matter what she chooses to wear on September 4th and subsequent game days it’s a sure bet that heads will turn when Loreal Sarkisian enters. She will be wearing her best accessories - optimism, grace, faith, a smile and living her mantra ‘To thine own self be true.’ - win or lose. When you meet her, you feel like you’ve reconnected with an old friend. She is light and free, fierce, and bold all in one stunning package. Our mission for the day was to find Loreal’s new Austin style at our Congress Avenue shopping mecca – Music Lane. Dirty little secret, I’m not a shopper. After our first stop at Gorjana I quickly realized I was with a pro, and I needed to up my game. Loreal has the bone that I wish I was gifted. She has the eye for style and fashion.
