HAPPY AUGUST AUSTIN, It’s early Friday morning in Old Austin, and I’m sitting in my pink velvet chair, looking out the front window of my 1950s ranch-style home. As I sit here, I think about how much has happened in Austin over the last 70 years: how many births and birthday parties, games and graduations, concerts played, businesses created, new buildings built, salamanders saved, legislative sessions held, snowstorms survived, life’s surprises and disappointments, all woven together by people with hope, laughter, tears, and dreams.

IDEA Health Professions Principal Cameron Cook put it this way for a recent “Teachers and Leaders” blog: “Of course, parents would love to see their child become a doctor, but we don’t know what our kids are going to be,” Cook said. “But as my science teacher did for me, we can get our students excited about something so they work hard to explore different health professions while getting a great foundation in STEM careers.” Cook sees IDEA Health Professions not just as a way of changing the landscape of East Austin and the families living there but as an investment in the community. “When you look at doctors, surgeons and dentists throughout the state, it is overwhelmingly white,” he told IDEA’s blog. “That’s why IDEA Health Professions is here—to invest in our community and change that landscape.” Perhaps the most illustrative example of IDEA Health Professions working to invest in East Austin via the intersection of education and healthcare? This May, the school vaccinated over 950 community members against COVID-19.

LOCAL’S CHOICE

WHEN YOUR SKIN LOOKS GOOD, YOU CAN FEEL GOOD

FOR LOTS OF US, AUGUST IS BOTH THE FINAL MONTH OF SUMMER AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO BEGIN AGAIN. For teens and tweens, heading back to school is an ideal time to cultivate new self-care regimens. Focusing on skin care health can be a key element of laying a new foundation to begin again because when your skin looks good, you can feel good! Strait Music MUSIC TO OUR EARS FOR 57 YEARS

IF YOU’RE A MUSICIAN, A BAND MEMBER, NEED A CLARINET REPAIRED, OR HAVE LIVED IN AUSTIN FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME, YOU’VE PROBABLY HAD THE PLEASURE OF SHOPPING AT STRAIT MUSIC. Opened in 1963 by Dan Strait, it’s been the home store to many Texas musicians and music lovers alike. The devasting Memorial Day flood of 1981 brought 8 ½ feet of rushing water through their store. One of the most iconic scenes of that flood was one of Strait’s pianos floating down Lamar. ATX Lifestyle recently sat down with Dan’s grandson and current Executive Vice President Clint Strait, to ask him about the importance of music’s place in education, as well as what makes Strait music an integral part of the Austin music scene. 1. Q: FINISH THIS SENTENCE-STRAIT MUSIC IS IMPORTANT TO AUSTIN BECAUSE………. A: We are an integral part of the music scene. From getting that first instrument into a child’s hands to finding the right equipment to help a musician get that perfect sound. Our repair department keeps the music going. 2. Q: AFTER 57 YEARS IN BUSINESS WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? AND, ON THE FLIP SIDE, WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT ASIDE FROM THAT ROGUE FLY. A: The fact we are a third generation family-owned business is a serious source of pride for our business (and our family). What keeps me up at night are things like local and national political issues that can affect small businesses negatively.
