A Time to Make Memories... One New Year’s Eve weekend 15 years ago, Gen Padalecki, our friend Amber and I road-tripped from Los Angeles to Sun Valley Idaho to ring in the new year – in pretty dresses and Converse sneakers. Gen and Jared Padalecki had started dating not long before and Jared sent a text to Gen saying that it would be the last NYE they ever spent apart. He’s held true to that promise. And, this Christmas, what Gen’s looking forward to the most is spending time with her family – which now also includes three children. I caught up with Gen and chatted about having a marriage with longevity, prepping for the holidays and two of her greatest passions – books and Towwn, the site on sustainability (for the planet and ourselves) she started that stands for Take Only What We Need. Elsewhere in this issue you’ll find gift guides galore! Safe to say you should find an idea for everyone on your list in the following pages. As we close out 2022, I hope you celebrate, spend time with your families, reflect on the year that was, and plan for what you want your 2023 to be. KATIE – CAN YOU BELIEVE NEXT YEAR IT WILL BE THE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF KATIE KIME? WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOURSELF OVER THE DECADE? I've gotten a lot better at being okay with something taking way longer to happen or not happening when I want it to in order for it to happen the way it should. I no longer feel like a diva to say, no that's not good enough (for us as a brand), let's try again even if something is delayed. Style-wise I still am a more is more girl but certainly even that continues to evolve too.

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS AN AUSTIN VIBE OR TEXAS STYLE IN INTERIORS? Austin continues to be such a melting pot of styles and ideas. What I love about visiting homes in this city is I never know what I'm going to find. From the MOST modern things I've ever seen to really traditional stone and wood, every friend of mine here has a very different house from the other, and from me.

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR HOME FEEL EXTRA SPECIAL DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON? Candles are really big for me. At Christmas there are dozens and dozens. All of my most vivid memories in life are most conjured by smell so I try to do that in our house. In general I love going over the top during the holidays and having kids allows me to go with whatever without being too hard on myself for it being perfectly designed.

ANY STYLE TIPS FOR HOSTING FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR GATHERINGS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR? A stocked bar? Just kidding...kind of. I do think that's key for hosting, mostly in a way that allows people to access their own drinks, snacks, etc. without needing to ask the hostess. And flowers, as obvious or simple as that sounds, really do go such a long way. Little arrangements (even from Trader Joes, doesn't have to be fancy), in bathrooms, bedrooms and unexpected places make guests feel welcome and cared for.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT DECEMBER, THE HIBERNATING, SNUGGLING, CELEBRATING…. Ah, it really is the most wonderful time of the year. Our family does relish in all of it. We go all out on the decor, and in the evenings there are home-cooked meals, hot chocolate and the same Christmas movies on repeat. That time when we're all home together is what I look forward to most.

ANY TIPS ON GIFT GIVING FOR THE AUSTINITES IN YOUR LIFE? Obviously, I recommend our Austin toile but beyond that I think homemade gifts are underrated. One of my friends makes the best salsa in the world and all I want for Christmas from her is a few jars of it. Things like that can sometimes be the best and most unexpected gifts.

DO YOU MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS? WHAT STYLE GOALS AND RESOLUTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE YEAR AHEAD? I definitely do goal planning each January, not necessarily resolutions. But it's a big thing in our family and my husband and I take it seriously, going back and looking at what we wrote down the year before and then processing that before planning for the new year. It's such a refreshing time for me.

LASTLY, I HAVE TO ASK AUSTIN’S DESIGN GURU OF COURSE: WHAT TRENDS SHOULD OUR READERS LOOK OUT FOR IN 2023? I'm happy to say I feel like there's definitely some maximalist trends on the rise. Colorful, rainbow stripes, maxi dresses, statement bows and blouses. I'm here for all of it.

The run up to the holidays is packed with parties and festive events, gift buying, travel prepping and wrapping up all the loose ends of the year. Add to that running a business and a book club, acting, being a wife (to actor and entrepreneur Jared Padalecki) and mama of three (two boys and a girl), and things are busy for Genevieve Padalecki. We caught up with Gen, and talked about things from family and their new farm to two of her passions, books and Towwn. Short for Take Only What We Need, Towwn is a site she started with longtime friend Kelly Mickle to help people sustainably win the battle against burnout, both for themselves and the planet, with tips from eco-friendly kitchen swaps and sustainable sandals to self-care.

It’s been a wild couple of years and I am so inspired and feel so incredibly grateful for all the insightful, thoughtful and thought-provoking, stunning and beautiful writers I have been able to meet, converse and collaborate with because of it.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS? I love all the decorating, crafting, and meal making. I find it therapeutic and I love when my kids propose the activity.

DO YOU HAVE A RECIPE YOU LOVE TO MAKE AROUND THE HOLIDAYS? We love cooking during the holidays and all the kiddos love to contribute. It can range from a great lasagna to a medium rare steak (cooked by our 10-year-old), to my husband’s favorite, tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons. The holidays are so fun and gathering with friends and family for a meal is the best part.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD YOUR BOOK CLUB? I started my book club when we went into lockdown. I wanted a way to connect with people and have an outlet. I reached out asking for a “this or that” book pick for the

HOW DO YOU CONSUME BOOKS? DO YOU PREFER REAL BOOKS, AUDIOBOOKS, KINDLE? I prefer old-fashioned books I can hold in my hand. There’s something so wonderful about the sensory experience, the weight, the pages in between my fingers, turning a page, the smell of the binding. It just adds to the experience and for me is a delectable rush. I also love a good audiobook, especially with all the driving I do, but it all depends on the narrator.

WHAT’S NEW WITH TOWWN? Towwn is growing so quickly and we’re incredibly proud of our community. We just launched our TikTok channel to help spread our anti-perfectionism message about the planet and ourselves to reach new audiences. We’re also building an informative and fun newsletter. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO SEE IN THE EVOLUTION OF TOWWN IN 2023? Our main focus is reaching people who want to find solutions to burnout for themselves and the planet, regardless of background and politics. We’re looking at hosting more events where we can bring people together for these kinds of conversations, curating products to help people solve these challenges. YOU AND JARED RECENTLY BOUGHT A FARM… Yes, we love nature and I’m obsessed with soil health and regenerative farming. I’m hoping we slowly let the land speak to us and thoughtfully nurture biodiversity and tend to the soil as best we can. I’d like to have rotational cover crops as well as grazing animals to contribute to this beautiful symbiotic relationship. It’s also nice having a refuge for our family to get messy and breathe in and get lost in the woods so to speak.

WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN 2022? I’m most proud of my family. They are what I am so grateful for.

YOU WENT BACK TO ‘WALKER, TEXAS RANGER’ THIS SEASON IN FLASHBACKS, ANY DESIRE OR PLANS ON THE HORIZON TO RETURN TO MORE ACTING? Definitely, if it works for our family schedule.

YOU AND JARED HAVE BEEN MARRIED 12 YEARS, ANY ADVICE ON HAVING A MARRIAGE WITH LONGEVITY? Marriage is the best and most amazing adventure in the world. And like farming, there are some good seasons and not so great ones. Marriage takes a lot of love

and nurturing. Throughout our lives we change and evolve into many different people. So, in a partnership, you’re both constantly growing and it’s impossible to always grow together, whether in parallel lines or intertwined at the same time. The best advice that’s been helpful for me is to take time and try and understand where your partner is coming from, and before reacting to anything that maybe feels a bit incendiary or frustrating, give it 24 hours.

WHAT’S SOMETHING ONE OF YOUR KIDS DID LATELY THAT SURPRISED YOU OR MADE YOU LAUGH? Well, I’m currently watching my 8-yearold try and tell me U2 is the best band of all time—I had no idea he knew U2! My oldest sang a song in Mandarin at a school talent show and my youngest gave her best ‘Hocus Pocus’ rendition dancing on our kitchen table - all in the last 24 hours! I don’t know why I’m surprised by their theater bug, but clearly it’s shining through.

Growing up Jewish in Texas, we celebrated both Holidays in my household, Christmas and Hanukkah. I grew up in Round Rock, Texas for most of my life. Every year, my family would do a hayride around the neighborhood to look at all the Christmas lights with hot chocolate. It was something that even when I went off for college, I would come back to do.

wrapping the gifts for children in foster care. My family and I have done this every year since 2002. Enamel Dentistry donates to many causes throughout the holidays, including gifting a smile to someone who is in need of extensive cosmetic dental care. Giving back is something we love to do!

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE HEALTH COMMUNITY HERE IN AUSTIN? The sense of giving back to the community and uniting for common causes is what I truly love about the health community here. Having worked in many different industries, I can confidently say the health community bands together even if they are competing offices in Austin.

WHAT EXCITING NEW GOALS HAVE YOU SET YOURSELF FOR IN 2023? I am taking up a new hobby! I want to learn something new this upcoming year. I’ve narrowed it down to making pottery, painting or playing an instrument. Check back with me next year to see!

For me personally, I’ve learned you need to love yourself and to be your biggest cheerleader in life, in and outside of the office. Make time for the ones you love, because time is the one gift you cannot get back after it’s gone. Manifesting your dreams is real. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
