Happy Holidays! WELCOME TO SOME INSPIRATION FOR GIVING, LIVING & RECEIVING IN YOUR MAILBOX THIS MONTH. Growing up, my family would volunteer around the holidays. As I got older, wanting to give back around the holidays, and throughout the year, stuck with me. I even donated my dad’s clothes to a homeless charity after he passed away, and got to see people give new life and purpose to his old clothes.

Holidays spent volunteering with my family are actually some of my fondest memories. One of John Paul DeJoria’s clearest memories is being poor himself when he was young and his single mom giving a dime to he and his brother and telling them to donate it to the man ringing the bell for The Salvation Army. “Someone always needs it more than you,” she told them. That stuck with John Paul and this year he gave $250,000 to the Salvation Army – and millions more to causes he vetted and saw it could make an effective difference. John Paul and his wife Eloise’s genuine spirit of giving, 365 days a year, is why I really wanted them for the December cover. I was impressed by how much they quietly do to give back to Austin and make it better. But, after meeting them, I’m in awe of the time they invest in

TOWWN TIPS We’e such a fan of Nina Berenato - the person and her jewelry line. From permanent bracelets to the lip cuff Angelina Jolie recently wore to the Eternals premiere, she has great pieces for holiday gifting - and it’s all sustainably made. She even was the first fashion retailer in Austin to be named a Platinum Green Business Leader. Find her store in the domain on online at https://www.ninaberenato.com Austin BeerWorks Love Austin Beerworks but appreciate them even more knowing that they are actively looking for more ways to be better to the planet. They collaborated with a local company called Earth Labs to pull carbon from the atmosphere to carbonate their beer. Wine For the People Tis’ the season for toasting and wine and had to toast to a wine that makes a big impact for the people. Not only is their wine delicious, it is the perfect collaboration with nature to foster a better connection. Now that’s something to celebrate! Southold Winery is a winery that is “non interventionist” - now that is something to spark a holiday conversation. It’s the perfect harmony between beautiful bold wines and love and respect for mother nature.

It’s a really cool song about Christmas, representing Jesus the King of Kings and the velvet picture of Elvis we have on the wall here at Lala’s, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Two or three months went by before she could get herself together to get back into the bar, and AS ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY APPROACHES NEXT YEAR,

Austin venues has always been a priority to me and my business partner, Matt Luckie. From Star Bar to The Mean Eyed Cat, we’ve been warriors in keeping these places open and stopping them getting pushed out of the way for condos and chain restaurants. Frances sadly passed away about a year and a half later, but Lala’s is still the place she grew, a place where people can come to celebrate the best moments in life, recover from the worst moments in life, or to sit on their own at the bar and feel welcomed. In November and December, people line around the block past midnight to get in. Its fun to be discovered by a whole new group of people. TELL OUR READERS THE TRUE STORY

I’ll tell you all three rumours, but I’m not going to confirm which one’s true. We prefer just to let people discern for themselves which one they want to believe, whatever makes them feel comfortable and happy, and gets them through what they’re going through at that time. The first one is the most well-known, that Frances’ son left for Vietnam right before Christmas, and she promised not to take down the decorations in the bar until he came home from the war. He never returned, so the decorations never came down. Hayes Carll wrote a song about it called Jesus and Elvis, and Kenny Chesney

the world a better place because you’re here.” He adds, “We really pay attention to Austin as our global counterpoint to get things going.”
Inspired by Community
That’s thanks in no small part to his ever-supportive wife, who even after more than 30 years together still looks at John Paul like a lovestruck newlywed. A look of adoration and admiration John Paul reflects right back. “I dragged him here,” Eloise, a native Texan says of getting California-born and raised John Paul to move to Austin decades ago and make it the place they’d call home and raise their children. “We looked the world over and we had a two-year-old son,” John Paul says, “And we thought, ‘Where do we want to raise him?’ It could have been anywhere in the world. We picked Austin for the community, you can’t beat it. It has some of the best schools in the nation, it’s family oriented and there are good family values here.” After decades here, their love for Austin (and each other) has only grown. Eloise says, “We love hiking the trails and the parks. We love being outside. And then, of course, the music festival. We love music. And I Iove the spirit of Austin. I just feel like everybody’s heart is in the right place here.” John Paul adds, “My favorite thing is that a week does not go by where Austin doesn’t provide a variety of things to do. In Austin you have your choices and you can get involved if you want to. A lot of our friends come through who are musicians, we could go out and see them or we can have an easy weekend and just

GIVING BACK
Gratefully
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
