Westlake Community Shows Support For Columbia County Sheriff’s Office The Westlake community showered the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office with snacks and gifts to say thank you for catching a suspect that was hiding in their neighborhood! They also made donations to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol, who also were involved in the chase.
Unite In The Fight Against Cancer 2023 Unite in the Fight Against Cancer is hosted and supported by the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University. It’s a two mile walk that celebrates and honors all who have been impacted by this disease. Everyone who participates is able to wear a ribbon or lei in the corresponding color in honor or memory of a loved one during the walk. The RECing Crew The RECing Crew is a nonprofit organization that provides different types of leisure and recreational programs for any type of disability. Pam Stickler started this program twenty years ago for her son Stephen. “He had just come out of the school system and was in an adult day program,” says Pam. She tells us that he wanted to hang out with his friends he had made during high school, but they had all moved away for college. “I thought, how hard could it be to start a simple little bowling program,” says Pam. Now, The RECing Crew offers many activities such as baseball, martial arts, dance, and so much more. Going Back 2 Give Back Napoleon and Michelle Houser started Going Back 2 Give Back, a nonprofit organization, in 2021. “We focus on at-risk individuals, and that could be someone coming out of prison, coming out of drug and alcohol addiction, or even youth that don’t have family support and are on that same pathway,” says Napoleon. Compass For Hope Compass For Home serves the homeless population of Augusta by going out every Sunday and providing them with clothing, toiletries, and hot showers with their shower stall trailer. Mike Garrison felt compelled to start Compass For Hope after his twelve year old daughter wanted to serve in a soup kitchen and was denied because of her age. Later, he was at a store and noticed a homeless man outside. At first, he didn’t pay much attention until he saw someone else stop and help. “What caught my attention more than anything is that she gave him what I consider her most valuable asset, and that was her time. She stood there and held his hand while listening to him,” says Mike. Compass For Hope is currently raising funds to purchase a laundry trailer where people will be able to wash and dry their clothes. Sacred Heart Cultural Center LEARN THE HISTORY BEHIND THIS BEAUTIFUL BUILDING
Sacred Heart Cultural Center is a beautiful 125-year-old former Catholic Church located in the heart of Augusta. “We were a practicing Catholic Church for about 100 years until 1971 when the church was closed and went through a formal ceremony called deconsecration, which means we’re no longer considered holy space by the Catholic Church,” says Millie Huff, Executive Director at Sacred Heart. “The congregation was merged with two other Catholic churches in the downtown area and the building was left vacant for about 16 years.” Sacred Heart was on the verge of destruction before the property was purchased and over two years were spent restoring it. In 1987 it was reopened as a cultural center and is now run by a nonprofit organization that continues the preservation of the building.

“It’s definitely a labor of love to take care of it and keep it up. It requires quite a bit of money to keep it open and operational just because it’s an old historic building that needs a lot of upkeep,” says Millie. “We support ourselves in a number of ways: We have a little gift shop, we keep our art gallery filled with local and regional art, and our primary way of supporting ourselves year-round is by renting out the space that was the sanctuary, now referred to as the great hall.” “We also do special events throughout the year that benefit us and the one that’s coming up this spring is the Garden City Festival at Sacred Heart. We have done this every spring for more than twenty years and it is just a beautiful way of celebrating springtime,” says Millie. At the Garden City Festival, activities will take place at Sacred Heart Cultural Center and off campus. At Sacred Heart, there are two outside Garden Parties, vendors, speakers that cover all topics related to gardening and home, and more! “We also have pop-up demos so somebody who is new to gardening can learn something like how to create a composting pile or how to create a pot garden. Something that’s not just for advanced gardeners, but for somebody who is just getting started,” says Millie. On Seedling Saturday, kids can experience gardening with hands-on activities. They will learn about planting sprouted seeds, making seed balls, and learning different ways to start seeds and enjoy other gardening activities. Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour five local private gardens. Sacred Heart Cultural Center, which is located at 1301 Greene Street in Augusta, offers free tours to the public throughout the week. Each day at Burnside Law Firm, Thomas Burnside, III provides expert legal advice to clients while continuing a legal legacy that stretches over four generations. "My great grandfather, James Burnside, was a judge, a state senator, and a lawyer. His name first appears in the appellate records of Georgia back in 1901," shares Thomas. "Then his son, my grandfather (Thomas Reuben Burnside), was a lawyer and a member of the

Georgia House of Representatives. My father (Thomas Reuben Burnside, Jr.) was a lawyer and, of course, I'm a lawyer. So, we've been practicing law here in Georgia for well over 100 years." Visiting his father's law office and seeing the impact his father had on the community greatly influenced Thomas' decision to go into law himself. "It was going to the office with my dad as a kid and watching him help regular, everyday people and seeing how
appreciative they were of what he had done for them. They really appreciated how he had helped them in a critical period of their life and navigate a difficult time," shares Thomas. "My father was a true gentleman, not only to his clients but also opposing parties, lawyers, and judges," he adds. that spoke volumes about how he handled his business and is something I always appreciated. Don’t get me wrong, my father could be as tough as any lawyer out there; he just tempered it with compassion and decency—two things sorely lacking in our profession today." Thomas also continues the family legacy of being involved in the community and across the state of Georgia. "For many years, my dad served on the Board of Governors for the State Bar, which is the sort of the governing body for the State Bar in Georgia," explains Thomas. "Then when he passed away, I filled his spot and served on the Board of Governors from 2007 through this year, when I will roll off in 2023. We've invested a lot in, and value giving back to the legal profession." For the last two generations, the Burnside lawyers have focused primarily on personal injury law and have maintained the integrity established and passed on from past generations. "Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a sermon in 1963 based on Matthew 10:16 that was entitled “A Tough Mind and A Tender Heart.” I think that title sums up the dichotomy of skills that you need to be an effective advocate for a seriously injured client who needs help putting the pieces of their life back together.” says Thomas. “My father taught me that lesson and we strive to emulate his example here at our firm." Currently, Thomas practices law with two partners, Garon Muller and Robert MacGregor.
