For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Augusta City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Brittany Hutto Project Refresh Project Refresh is a non-profit mobile shower that serves those experiencing homelessness or home insecurity. “We are an eighteen foot mobile shower unit that houses two shower stalls, one of which is handicap accessible. Both stalls have air conditioning, heat, hot water, cold water, a toilet, and a sink,” says Brittany Hutto, one of the four ladies that started Project Refresh in 2020. “We all work within healthcare, and know the impact that hygiene plays in overall wellness. So we wanted to provide a safe space for people to shower off and get clean. We provide them with all the stuff they need to walk away feeling better, from toiletries to clean clothes. Sometimes people forget how taking a shower can make you feel, and we wanted to find a way to give back to our community that promotes health and wellness in a new way for Augusta and surrounding areas,” she shares.

Project Refresh is on a mission to change the perception of homelessness and restore the dignity and hope that a shower can bring. Patrisia Miller Secretary. Augusta Elks Lodge #205 Members of Augusta Elks Lodge #205 have always been big supporters in the community and especially for local veterans. “We do a lot of volunteer work,” says Patrisia Miller, Secretary of the Elks Lodge. Patrisia has been a member of the Elks Lodge since 2008 and loves serving people. “We have a special needs dance every fall and we also do a lot for veterans. We go every month to the VA nursing home and serve sandwiches, cookies, and sodas. We also bought guitars for the veterans that take lessons at the VA hospital,” says Patrisia.

Lola Colvin Supporter, Golden Harvest Food Bank October proved to be an extraordinary month for six-yearold Lola Colvin. She, and many of the 400 students who attend Sieglers Karate Center, participated in the It’s Spooky To Be Hungry Campaign, which benefits the Golden Harvest Food Bank. During the campaign, Lola got sick with COVID and was unable to continue her fundraising. However, when followers of her mom’s Instagram business account (Lola Bean Yarn Co. – Adella Colvin) found out Lola was sick, they wanted to help. With their support, Lola raised over $3,500! In total, the students collected almost $10,000 and several thousand pounds of food for Golden Harvest. In response to the attention Lola is receiving from the fundraising, she says, “Helping people makes my heart happy!”

EXPERIENCE THIS ONE-OF-A-KIND TREASURE HUNT AT JEKYLL ISLAND

Every year, Jekyll Island hosts an exciting treasure hunt for their guests and residents to find Island Treasures; a unique and fascinating handmade glass float. “It’s an island-wide treasure hunt that began more than twenty-one years ago and happens every January and February. We work with artists from all around the country to create these one-of-a-kind glass floats,” says Kathryn Hearn of the Jekyll Island Authority. This treasure hunt was inspired by fishermen in the early 1900s who would use hollow glass balls, also known as floats, on their nets as markers. The floats would sometimes come loose and float to the shore where they could be found and kept. In the 1950s, searching for and finding these floats would become a popular hobby for collectors. Over two hundred clear plastic globes with redemption codes inside will be hidden throughout Jekyll Island for guests to find and exchange for a handmade glass float at the island’s Guest Information Center. “We have employees called “Beach Buddies” who volunteer their time to

hide the clear globes around the island. They are very stealthy and know that people are looking for them. They wander the island hiding all the island treasures in fun places. We like to say that they are hidden in plain sight,” shares Kathryn. Some places to search for treasure are common areas such as beach parks, the Historic District, and along established paths. You will never find a float on residential property, in the dunes or marsh, or anywhere “off the beaten path.” Jekyll Island offers ten miles of beaches to explore and twenty-two miles of bike paths. “We don’t have any stoplights on the island which is unique. Biking is a great way to get around. It’s the right place to unplug and reconnect,” says Kathryn. The island is also known for its history. “Jekyll Island is the site of Georgia’s first brewery and one of the oldest historical homes in the country, and where the first transcontinental phone call took place.” There are many things for people of all ages to explore and enjoy during their stay at Jekyll Island. “The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is the only sea turtle rehabilitation and education center in Georgia,” says Kathryn. The center offers guests a chance to see rehabilitation in action and guests may even get a chance to watch when it’s time to feed the turtles. At the Jekyll Island Bike Barn, you can rent adult bikes, kid-sized bikes, and specialty bikes. There are various bike routes to enjoy, all of which include beautiful scenery. Though the route that leads you to the Historic Horton House ruins and Horton Pond will take you where you might spot a few alligators! The Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum has in-depth and interactive exhibits that draw you in and incredible visuals and audio that tell the story of Jekyll Island. There you can enjoy the

Welcoming a new year and leaving behind the hectic pace of the holidays leaves many people longing for a quiet place to relax, refocus, and recenter their lives on prioritizing self-care. SageHaus Studios owner Saintetè Martinez can help with that goal. In addition to offering holistic self-care coaching, she specializes in a variety of wellness modalities including peristeam hydrotherapy, yoga and guided meditation, and is a certified doula. “One of the reasons I opened SageHaus Studios is to offer a more personalized, relaxed, one-on-one wellness and self-care experience,” shares Saintetè. “A lot of our getaway places are still congested with many other people, so we don't have the opportunity to really clear our minds. I love being able to service people and offer the opportunity to sit, clear your mind, and release.” A full menu of services provides clients with a variety of ways to focus on holistic wellness. “We offer manicures and pedicures, detox services that includes herbal foot detox, womb detox, pelvic and perineal steams, infrared sauna blankets, and yoga,” explains Saintetè. “The herbal foot detox is offered in two ways, the foot sauna or the foot soak,” explains Saintetè. “The foot sauna is basically a foot steam with herbs and the foot soak is soaking with the herbs in the foot soak. Foot soaks and saunas help in many different ways, including reducing the swelling in your legs and your feet, which is especially important for people who work constantly on their feet.” Saintetè offers several options for yoga as well. “I do private one-on-one or small group yoga sessions. I primarily do restorative and Yoga Nidra, which is one of my favorites because it's a yogic sleep. You're not asleep, but your

body gets to relax and rest as I guide you with a mindful meditation,” she shares. “I offer prenatal yoga when working with many of my doula clients. I also provide trauma-informed and mindfulness yoga, which is working with people who have dealt with some form of trauma. This is especially great for veterans and people who deal with PTSD, anxiety, or panic.” “One of my most intriguing services is the pelvic and perineal steam,” says Saintetè. “Pelvic and perineal steams help with fertility, menstrual issues, menopause, irregular cycles, negative sexual experiences or trauma, uterine disorders, rectum and pelvic issues. It can benefit men with erectile dysfunction, prostate health, reducing an enlarged prostate, rectal issues, and hemorrhoids.” The services offered through SageHaus Studios are adaptable. “I customize the herbs with the pelvic steam, as well as the foot steams and foot soaks, to what the client is needing,” she explains. “I check for any contraindications with medications as well to confirm nothing is contrary to what is indicated on any medications taken by the client.” Saintetè truly enjoys helping others feel better. “I love the smile on a client's face after they've had services and the difference in their demeanor from when they walk through my door versus when they leave,” shares Saintetè. “It brightens my day to know that I helped brighten someone else's day; even if that means just being able to help you sit and take a load off your feet, you know you have a place to relax, release, and renew.” SageHaus Studios is located at 4210 Columbia Road, Bldg 11, Suite 11C in Martinez.
