In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. F A M I LY VA L U E S The Henderson family prioritizes time together during busy seasons of life

Meet the Henderson family. As is common in families of multiple children, the Hendersons find themselves very busy with their oldest son Tres attending Clemson University, daughter Alana Kate participating in sports and school activities, and younger kids Millie Ann and Knox growing rapidly and exploring the world around them. Keeping everyone on schedule, happy, and healthy are John and Brooke. John serves as Division Manager for Satterfield Construction Inc. and owns H&A Development. Brooke, an Occupational Therapist, works part-time when needed in the Jefferson County Hospital and at Doctors Hospital. With all the things that pull their family in different directions, they work hard to prioritize spending time together. “As a family, the kids and I really enjoy the beach and we try to go several times a year and also take a mountain trip with John since he enjoys the mountains more than the beach,” shares Brooke. “We love the pool, the splash pad… anything to do with water and playing outside.” The family also enjoys attending GreenJackets games, riding on the golf cart each day, and protecting their Sunday afternoons as time to relax together and prep for the busy week ahead.

As the holiday season approaches, John and Brooke reflect on the things and people for whom they are most thankful. “We are thankful that we have family who live near us,” says Brooke. “John’s parents are about 20-25 minutes away and my parents and both sisters live within five miles of us. With two small kids, having family close by is wonderful because it really does take a village to raise children.” They are also thankful for having a healthy family. Since 2007, John has raced as part of the late model dirt track circuit (Johnhendersonracing.com). In August of 2020, John flipped his car while racing and what he thought was a minor injury quickly turned into something much bigger. Just a week after celebrating their youngest daughter’s first birthday on September 28th, John found himself in the ICU for five days following emergency brain surgery. “John had a midline shift, which most people don’t survive,” shares Brooke. “He had two centimeters thickness of a brain bleed on the right side, but he was living with it telling himself that he had whiplash or a concussion. He was still walking, talking, driving, racing… still working but with a headache. He had

very minor symptoms for the severity of injury. We had a CT scan done just to check things out which sent him into emergency brain surgery. We’re all healthy now though and we’re thankful for that.” Although the injury sidelined John for a while, he is grateful to be back in the driver’s seat traveling all over the eastern U.S. for races. As they reflect on life’s blessings, John and Brooke also acknowledge the importance of blessing others. “My brother is a pastor, and he is part of a ministry called BRICK,” explains John. “They choose five to seven different projects a year to help the underprivileged with things like putting a roof on a house or building a handicap ramp for an elderly person and they do all the projects in about a week’s time. It’s like a camp with worship each night, and the older kids get to participate while I help with coordination of equipment and whatever they need on the work sites.” This holiday season, let the Hendersons inspire us to not only be thankful for all the blessings in life, but strive to make spending time with family and serving others a priority in the midst of busy schedules.

Exciting Developments at Augusta Technical College President Dr. Jermaine Whirl shares details of this new era at the college

In November 2020, when Dr. Jermaine Whirl became the President of Augusta Technical College at thirty-five years old, he also became the youngest President hired in the technical college system. Since then, he has expanded the programs offered and brought significant opportunities to campus, which serves approximately seven thousand students per year. “The faculty and staff here are just unbelievable. It’s a great group of colleagues,” shares Dr. Whirl. “We have a number of PhDs who do research, publish findings, and present at national conferences. We're very fortunate that we have the level of talent that we have here at Augusta Tech and they're not only researchers, but they are also practitioners. We have folks who have been in the workforce for a number of years, bringing a practicality to the education.” In the past few years, Augusta Tech has seen a plethora of new developments. “I think one of the greatest accomplishments that we've had in the last two years was developing our new School of Health Sciences Campus at Summerville,” shares Dr. Whirl.

Through a partnership with Piedmont of Augusta which allows Augusta Tech to lease the property for $1 a year for fifteen years, the retired Trinity Hospital was renovated by Piedmont and converted into classroom and clinical learning space for students in the health sciences program. “We have not only been able to increase capacity, but Piedmont also raised over a million dollars for nursing scholarships in one year,” he adds. “It will eliminate the expense for anybody who wants to be an RN and also have a guaranteed full-time opportunity with Piedmont.” Looking ahead, there are more opportunities on the horizon. “The first week in November, we'll be launching our new Microenterprise Center in partnership with the Downtown Development Authority,” says Dr. Whirl. “We were awarded $2.3 million from Senator Warnock to open up this incubator to really support small business development. The building is already under contract, and we will be spending eight to ten months renovating it. It will be open about this time next year.”

“More importantly, this investment is going to increase other manufacturing economic development jobs coming to Augusta.”

“We'll also be doing a soft launch of our automotive training facility, which is the former Johnson Cadillac automobile dealership on Walton Way,” he adds. “We purchased the building last December and we're going to be turning that into a 65,000 square feet automotive training facility teaching diesel technicians, auto body collision, automotive technology, and electrical and hybrid vehicle technology. Our students will also learn how to operate a dealership if they want to do parts, sales, service, finance, etc.” The facility is set to open in 2025. Most recently, Augusta Technical College has been awarded $45 million dollars to open an Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Technology facility, which according to Dr. Whirl will be the largest state investment in Columbia County to date. “It is going to be a three-story facility specifically focused on training our next generation of manufacturing professionals, specifically in the engineering areas,” he says. “When you talk about electrical, mechanical, and nuclear engineering plus architectural drafting, chemical technology, machinists, robotics technicians, mechatronics

technicians….those folks are in extremely high demand. We need to ensure that we develop the next generation to replace those who are retiring, but also to keep up with the new companies that are coming into the area, it is essential that we have a facility like this that replicates 21st-century manufacturing. We're going to be able to have upwards of thirteen hundred students in that building at any given time to produce the next generation of manufacturers.” “More importantly, this investment is going to increase other manufacturing economic development jobs coming to Augusta,” adds Dr. Whirl. “Representatives Lee Anderson, Jodi Lott, Barry Fleming, and Mark Newton, along with Senator Max Burns and the entire Augusta delegation deserve tremendous praise for shepherding this throughout the state legislative cycle last year. Working to get it passed and getting the governor to approve it was no easy task. DIY at Home Theater Our family had so much fun creating this At-Home Movie Theater party for our son Ezra’s 8th birthday. All you need is a projector and an outdoor space, but I wanted to jazz it up just a little bit more.

I created a ticket booth and concession stand for a full movie theater experience to ensure that our movie night felt like our guests were actually going to a movie theater and not just our house. In attempt to achieve that, we set up a ticket booth at the front door using our kids old puppet theater.

I love displaying food in a creative way at our parties. I made this simple DIY Popcorn Display Wall as a statement piece in our concession stand. We have also used it in many other ways for other parties such as a donut wall, bagel wall, pretzel wall and more. You can easily recreate your own for your next party.

Materials: • Tickets • Ticket Booth (optional)

Materials: • Pegboard. I chose the 4ft square size at Lowes for $10 and spray painted it white. • Frame (optional). I bought two 1x4’s for $5 each, cut 2 pieces 4ft long and 2 pieces 3.5ft long, stained minwax walnut, attached to pegboard with screws through the back. • Twine to string popcorn bags. Or, if you’re using the pegboard display for donuts, bagels or pretzels then use golf tees hot glued into holes from behind! • Clothes pins to hang popcorn bags. • Popcorn bags

Before entering our theater (aka our backyard), I set up a shadow box for guests to place their entry ticket.

My daughter handed out tickets for guests to use to “purchase” their popcorn, candy and drinks at the concession stand.

I cut out red stars (from foam sheets) and stuck them to the floor (with adhesive putty) to lead guest through the house to the concession stand and back outside to where our movie was going to take place. Finally, our guests could choose their seating on chairs or blankets around our yard. I also set up a little bug-spray table for people to grab as needed. Dramatic play, even as an adult, is so much fun! Who says staying home can’t be just as entertaining? I hope you have as much fun at your party as we did! In reflecting on the party, my son said that “the best part of the night was eating candy with my friends.” After all, people are what matter most!
