The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. Eric & Kristina Mongillo Broad Street Ministry Center “We have a week full of ministries and programs we offer through partnership with many different churches and other organizations that also serve the community,” shares Kristina. “Over 100 families walk through the doors of Broad Street over the course of a week to enjoy a warm meal, attend Bible study or adult literacy classes, receive resume assistance, or browse the clothing floor - with the core of it all being our food pantry where we serve the homeless, low income families, disabled veterans, and seniors.”

Susan Swanson, Director Augusta Care Pregnancy Center Susan Swanson serves as the director and is truly the heart of the Augusta Care Pregnancy Center. She spends countless hours connecting pregnant women with resources to help them and their babies live healthy, safe lives. “We direct a lot of resources to helping homeless mothers and children and pregnant mothers,” shares Susan. “We offer parenting classes and a class on healthy relationships, because so many of our clients grew up in troubled homes and don’t know what a healthy relationship looks like.” ACPC also offers pregnancy testing, counseling, Bible study, and support for women in a variety of areas.

John McGill Lynndale Inc John McGill works at Lynndale Inc. in the cane and rush department. He creates custom stools that are handwoven and depending on how complex the project is, it can take several weeks to complete a piece. There are a variety of colors and patterns to choose from but John’s favorite pattern to create is the checker pattern. John has worked at Lynndale for ten years and has been in the cane and rush department for over five years. In his spare time, he loves to read, research, and learn new things. He has a collection of over 80 Bibles and has taken several seminary classes online.

Snowflake (Salt Dough) Ornaments OLD TRADITIONS WITH MODERN DAY TRENDS

Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. Salt Dough Recipe *Makes about 12 ornaments

2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½ to ¼ inch thick.

Supplies Needed • Rolling Pin • Cookie Cutters (optional) • Plastic or Metal Straw • Cookie Sheet • Parchment Paper • Lettered Stamps • Acrylic Sealer • Bakers Twine

3. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking.

Ingredients • 1 cup All Purpose White Flour • ½ cup Table Salt • ½ cup Water (give or take) • 4oz White Acrylic Paint

5. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side.

Step-By-Step 1. Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry.

6. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags.

4. Place ornaments on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake.

PA N ROASTED FETA W ITH BROCCOLINI

Change up your normal foods for the holidays with this Pan Roasted Feta with Broccolini recipe from Chef Megan Alig of Creative Cuisine! This is a light and fresh dish that your guests are sure to love! It's great for large gatherings and takes the time out of cooking so many appetizers.

THIS DISH IS PERFECT FOR LARGE CHRISTMAS GATHERINGS

PAN ROASTED FETA WITH BROCCOLINI Ingredients: • 1 bunch broccolini, ends trimmed and thick stalks split lengthwise (Can use broccoli if preferred) • 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved (about 2 cups) • 1 small red onion, peeled, quartered and cut into 2-inch wedges • 1 lemon, ½ cut into thin rounds and the remaining ½ left intact, for serving • 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for serving • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon thyme • ½ teaspoon red-pepper flakes • Kosher salt and black pepper • 2 (6 to 8 ounce) blocks feta, cut into 1-inch slices. • 1 cup fresh basil leaves to top after cooking

Directions: 1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Toss all vegetables in a bowl with all ingredients except basil. Add directly to sheet pan once coated. Nestle the feta slices into the vegetables. Make sure your vegetables are not loaded on top of one another, as the cooking will steam instead of roast. Feta tends to break apart, so no biggie! 2. Roast 15 to 25 minutes, stirring halfway through but leaving the feta in place, until the broccolini is charred at the tips, the stems are easily pierced with a fork, and the tomato skins start to blister and break down. 3. Drizzle with olive oil and serve with the remaining lemon half for squeezing. Top with the fresh basil leaves. This is best served right out of the oven. If it sits too long and gets cold, the cheese can become chewy. You can also serve this with warm toast points.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.)
