Life by Design Twelve years ago Camille Styles started a namesake blog. Around the same time she moved into a house she and her husband of 13 years built in Tarrytown. She and her husband, Adam Moore, have since made that house a home where they currently live with children Phoebe, 10, and Henry, 7 - when not at the 1950s beach house they’re renovating in Malibu, California, Casa Zuma – the inspiration for her lifestyle line of the same name. For our Home Issue, we caught up with Camille who says, “My mission is to empower
people to create their most beautiful lives. I want to give them all the tools and inspiration and knowledge they need to truly design the life of their dreams.” Read on to see how she’s doing that for her audience, and herself.
YOU LAUNCHED YOUR FIRST BUSINESS, AN EVENT PLANNING COMPANY, IN 2009. HOW LONG DID YOU DO THAT? I ran Camille Styles Events for about 3 years, with my blog as a creative side hustle.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THAT COMPANY?
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A POSITIVE PERSON WITH A ZEST FOR LIFE?
I really loved planning events. Meeting with clients and helping them develop a vision for their event, and then collaborating with people to bring it to life was so much fun. I learned so much from the chefs, florists, set designers and I learned how to stay cool under pressure. In the world of events, it’s not if but when something is going to go wrong, so it’s all about learning to handle a potential disaster and being the calm anchor for everyone else.
I do think that positivity and resilience are in my DNA—I’m a passionate lover of life and I’ve always had an inherent sadness over how quickly it races by. The silver lining is that I’m constantly trying to wake up and pay attention to my actual everyday experience because every moment is so precious and I don’t want to miss any of it. When I look back on the things that brought me joy and excitement as a little girl, there are many patterns that still carry through. I loved making things with my hands, beautiful imagery that sparked my imagination, reading and writing great stories. I inherited my love of beauty and nature from my mom. We would take nature walks and collect everything that we found, like flowers and leaves, and put them in a scrapbook with labels identifying the names of everything.
WHEN DID YOU WRAP THAT UP AND WHY? I started my blog as a side creative outlet when I launched my event planning company. It was a place to share tips and inspiration through my lens as an event planner, and I was a Journalism major in school and have always loved expressing myself through writing and visuals. As the blog started to take off and build an audience, I saw an opportunity to turn it into a real business. So, even though I knew very little about digital media at the time, I took a leap of faith and decided to try blogging full-time.
“I was a Journalism

WHEN DID THE VISION EXPAND TO LAUNCHING YOUR OWN LIFESTYLE RETAIL BRAND?
I’ve thought of a lot of different product ideas through the years, and while many of them could have worked and even been fun to pursue, I knew that if I was going to pour my heart into something it had to feel purposeful and core to who I am. Ultimately, the brand was inspired by the slower way of living we discovered as our family began renovating a 1950’s beach house in Malibu, across from Zuma Beach. We wanted to share that experience through handmade goods that could inspire our community to slow down and enjoy life, and so Casa Zuma was born. As a former event planner and lifelong party thrower, I have a strong POV about the plates, glassware and linens that I want to use on my table. My passion for handmade ceramics, textured table linens, and beautiful glassware run deep, and I’ve spent years searching for the best versions of each one. For example, I’d long searched for the perfect

and visuals.”
When I launched the site, it was about entertaining and cooking, inspired by what I was doing as an event planner. While those are still major themes, the intent has changed from one that was about ‘planning the perfect party.’ a la Martha Stewart vibes, to now being a voice that embraces authenticity and imperfection and approaches gatherings as an opportunity to connect with the people.
DO YOU STILL DO A LOT OF THE WRITING? I still create many of our recipes, write articles about my own design projects and each week I write my Breathing Space newsletter, which is a more personal letter to our community about what’s on my mind.

linen napkin, so I designed a heavyweight oversized napkin that is a true essential for the home. Our stemless handblown wine glasses are what I love to drink out of at home, so I worked with artisans in Oaxaca to make my ideal version and they’ve been one of our most popular items. When I thought about designing and sourcing my own products for the table, I got that feeling deep in my soul that just said—YES. Over the last year and a half, we’ve been working with artisans around the world to create handmade

pieces for the home and the table. Casa Zuma’s products align with so many of the ideas we’ve long explored on my site: learning to be more fully present, surrounding ourselves with things that spark joy, and connecting with the people who matter to us.
YOUR RITUAL MUG COMES WITH SEVERAL SUGGESTED RITUALS, WHAT ARE SOME YOU PRACTICE REGULARLY? Our Ritual Mug is a limited edition drop that will happen every fall—our final 2022 batch sold out in four hours! (You
can get on the waitlist for next year’s mug now at casazuma.com.) The Ritual Mug was actually the product that started it all and was inspired by my own morning ritual. Every morning, no matter how busy my day is, I spend some time journaling or reading, doing something that puts me in a good headspace. I also look at my schedule and my goals, so I can be really intentional with my time that day. And I always do it while holding my coffee in the same handmade ceramic mug that I’ve owned for years, made by a ceramicist in Santa Fe. So, when it came time to design the Ritual Mug for Casa Zuma, I reached out to her, and she agreed to team up with us on this launch product. It was really special.
HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR HUSBAND? We met at work. Before I launched my company I worked for the digital marketing agency that Adam had founded. In general, I would say that dating the boss is a really bad idea… but in our case, it all worked out.
IT SOUNDS LIKE HE HELPS YOU WITH YOUR BUSINESSES? Adam and I are constant collaborators in each others’ projects, and I feel so lucky to be married to someone with so many shared passions. Our date nights often consist of opening a bottle of
wine and talking about design projects, work ideas, or dreams for the future—nothing gets us more excited.
WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU LEARNED FROM MOTHERHOOD? Motherhood forced me to look at the way I was spending my time in a new way. Pre-kids, I actually loved working around the clock, and then when my kids were little, I felt a constant pull between giving my 110% to both motherhood and work, until I realized that something had to give. Now I’ve learned how important it is to carve out space just for them, with no distractions. When I’m working, my goal is to do the most focused work I can on the things that are really moving the needle for my business so that when I do unplug, I can fully unplug and live life to the fullest. My absolute top priority in the world is these two precious people who bring so much joy to my life every day—I’m so grateful that I get to be their mom.
WHY DO YOU THINK AUSTIN IS SUCH A GOOD PLACE FOR THEM TO GROW UP? I love raising our kids in a city that prioritizes getting out in nature, being active, and most of all, being open to new ideas. Austin celebrates creativity and individuality, and I want my kids to grow up feeling confident to be exactly who they are. CONTINUED >

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR HOUSE? The natural light that floods the spaces—the big steel doors that open to the backyard and create a seamless flow between the indoors and out.
WHEN DID YOU START THE GARDEN? We finished building it in August, and I began planting right away.
WHAT DO YOU GROW? This was my first season to grow a vegetable garden, and I was surprised by how much you can plant in a Fall garden in Texas! Since cooking is my passion, I planted the things I knew we’d want to eat—all the winter squashes (butternut, acorn, spaghetti), spinach, peppers, tomatoes and as many different types of herbs as I could get my hands on. For me, fresh herbs are the quickest way to add layers of flavor and beauty to a dish, so I need variety!
HOW HANDS-ON ARE YOU WITH THE GARDEN? My husband Adam loves working in the yard and takes care of all our hedges, shrubs and olive trees around the property. He
actually built the raised beds for my vegetable gardens, but the planting and maintenance are all mine! We ran drip sprinklers, so while there’s quite a bit of work involved in preparing and planting at the beginning of the season, once things start growing, it’s pretty simple. I love putting on my gardening gloves and going out to work. Since I spend so much of my time at work on screens and connected, I find it really meditative to get outside and dig in the dirt.
THE TAGLINE ON YOUR BLOG IS ‘LIVE LIFE LIKE YOU MEAN IT.’ WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? On the site, I write a lot about living intentionally and being more present—themes that I’m always working on in my own life. I think when we realize how short life is, it inspires us to spend our time on what matters most. For me, “living life like you mean it” means being purposeful with every day, knowing our time is limited and that the way we spend it should be aligned with our deepest values. And sometimes, that means letting go of the things that aren’t, to create more space for what matters. Keep up with Camille at camillestyles.com

Financial constraints or being bored easily are two reasons that keep people from outfitting the walls of their homes with museum-quality artwork. Easing the commitment to a single piece of coveted artwork is CoCollect, an art membership that allows people to curate their homes with high-end work on loan that can be rotated out yearly. Founded by UT alum Keli Hogsett in late 2022, they offer three membership options, each with ongoing education on the pieces borrowed and white glove installation. “I started CoCollect after I couldn’t find an answer to my own problem — I wanted to live with art while I learned about it,’ Keli told Austin Lifestyle, adding, “Building a meaningful collection should take a lot of time, thought and patience. I was trepidatious about investing in art while I knew I was still learning, and at the same time wasn’t willing to spend money at big box stores just to get something on
the walls. After searching for an outlet to loan art from museums and coming up short, CoCollect was born.”
They also have art works available over $35k, which they offer at custom membership rates. These include works from well-known artists like Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder and Donald Judd and practicing well-known contemporar y artists.
DIFFERENT MEMBER LEVELS INCLUDE: The Local Level where members get 3 works below $10,000. Named local because of a large offering of artwork from talented artists living and working in Austin, some artists you may recognize include Tammie Rubin, Tom Jean Webb and Xavier Schipani. They also have artworks available at this level that are sourced out of state. The Collector Level and Patron Levels members receive 4-7 pieces and access to pieces valued at $10,000 to $35,000. Artworks in this tier can range from established regional artists like Chuck Ramirez, Claire Oswalt and Matt Kleberg, to postwar abstract expressionists like Michael Goldberg, to blue-chip artists like Robert Rauchenberg and Ellsworth Kelly.
Currently only available in Austin, they have plans to expand throughout Texas and then go national. Keli says there is about $1 million of artwork currently on loan or headed to members and they boast a 100% renewal rate. Looking ahead, “I want CoCollect to be perceived as a collecting museum, where members can exhibit the art collection in their homes,” Keli says, “As we grow, we plan to roll out more educational programs that support our members and surrounding communities.”

N O W T R E N D I N G Get in the spring of things with these looks
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN
Four trends (three pictured) to make sure you have in your closet to look your best this season. 1. Column dresses have made a comeback. They are sleek and tailored and elongate the body. 2. The shrunken jacket. Cropped jackets are the perfect addition to a spring ensemble. 3. Blue hues are back for spring, specifically in icy shades and paler blues. They’ll keep you cool and chic throughout the season. 4. Black is back. It sounds like an unlikely color for spring, but black is always flattering, classic, and a must-have in your spring wardrobe.

Five Tips for a n Out st a nd i ng Outdoors! How to make your garden sing this spring and beyond!
1. PLANTS, PLANTS, AND MORE PLANTS! While I love using faux and dried plants inside, I prefer using live plants outside. I highly recommend finding a local nursery to source plants and planters from. The team at the nursery can help ensure that you are purchasing plants that will work for your space based on the amount of sunlight that comes in. Nurseries are also a mecca for a wide variety of planters, so I tend to start there when I need a vessel for planting. If you’re in Austin, I highly recommend Barton Springs Nursery or The Natural Gardener.
2. DECORATE YOUR TABLETOPS Not all materials are suited for exterior use, so it’s tempting to forgo decor and stick with the essentials for tabletops. However, there is certainly decor that will hold-up outside. Look for glazed ceramics, metals, or glass pieces which will help bring your space together without the fear of them being ruined.
3. ZERO-MAINTENANCE FURNITURE From freezes to storms and brutal heat in the summer, Austin experiences all types of weather. Investing in the right materials will allow you to enjoy your furniture throughout Austin’s various seasons. Aluminum is a go-to material for
outdoor furniture given that it’s rust-proof and water-resistant. We also love teak or concrete pieces, as they are also incredibly durable in any climate.
4. ADD A FIRE PIT While a fire pit is definitely not needed year-round, it can still act as a focal or gathering point in your outdoor space. In the cooler seasons, it’s the perfect excuse to get outdoors and create memories with family or friends. We love round, concrete fire pits as a way to offset the straight lines that are more common in large furniture pieces such as couches or tables.
5. ANCHOR YOUR SPACE WITH A RUG Similar to the inside of your home, rugs help define and pull a space together. They are also more comfortable to walk on than a hard patio floor. Make sure that your rug is outdoor rated and that it is large enough for at least one leg of all furniture pieces to sit on. ABOUT AUDREY A native of Fairchild, Texas, a rural village south of Houston, Audrey credits her small-town upbringing for her love of cozy, welcoming spaces. During middle school, she watched her parents go through the process of designing and building a house from the ground up, working with a builder and an architect, and traveling to source materials. Now Based in Austin, Audrey Scheck Design (ASD) is a full-service interior design firm expert in transforming both residential and office environments.

BRING SPRING IN! ARTICLE BY SARAH IVENS
HOW TO INTRODUCE THE GREAT OUTDOORS INTO YOUR HOME FOR A FRESH, FLORAL START TO SPRING I became interested in the power of connecting with nature after experiencing forest bathing in Japan a decade ago, where it began in the 1980s as a wellness movement to reduce depression and anxiety. I immediately incorporated the practice into my own life, getting out into the great outdoors as much as possible, immersing my senses in nature, being mindful instead of distracted by my phone as I breathed deeply and slowed down. The uptick in my positivity and energy was striking, and it prompted me to spend 12 months researching the reasons I felt so much better, a study that became a book, Forest Therapy. I was overwhelmed by the science that proved nature is the biggest, best – free! – boost we can give our mental and physical health. One study showed that people immersed in nature for four days were 50% more able to solve problems creatively than those stuck indoors; another discovered that just five minutes of physicality in a green space daily lifted spirits and self-confidence. Mother Nature encourages us to feel gratitude and look at the bigger picture, said another… and we can easily incorporate her into our homes as we spring clean this month.
SCREEN SAVERS Research shows that even looking at pictures of nature reduces mental fatigue and increases positive thinking. Switch your phone lock screen and laptop screensaver image to your favourite nature photo, frame artwork from favourite beauty spots, and buy yourself a nature-themed coloring book. Just looking at a green scene decreases the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which helps us to calm down.
FLOWER POWER Focusing on small details from the natural world enables our brains to switch off from work worries and think more creatively, so keep plants on your desk, treat yourself to a bunch of flowers for your bedside at weekends, hang air plants in

your bathroom – these little nods to nature will boost general happiness and change our mental gears.
BOTANICAL BATHS A warm bath soothes muscles, induces comfort, and helps us sleep better and adding woody essential oils to your tub for a true ‘forest bath’ boosts the medicinal benefits. Studies show valuable antibacterial, antifungal chemicals emitted by trees called phytoncides make their way into the bottle to help us feel our best.
BLUE SKY THINKING Daydream. Pay attention to the world outside your window. Look at the birds nesting, clouds floating, leaves falling. Mediate on how they move and change as you make coffee in the morning. Studies show a brain observing nature is more open to reflect, wander and be creative.
CULTIVATE CALM Turn your fingers green with some inside gardening. Horticultural therapy is real and growing and nourishing plants from cuttings and creating new life inspires mindfulness and contentment. Spider plants and succulents flourish all year round – or turn a bright windowsill into an indoor herb or tomato garden.
BRUSH WITH NATURE Using colours from nature in your home can create a home full of good vibes, so pick up a paintbrush on a dreary afternoon. Blue is peaceful and perfect for areas of relaxation, green - the quintessential colour of nature – promotes feelings of health and harmony in community spaces, while lavender is calming and restful, perfect for the bedroom. Forest Therapy: Seasonal Ways to Embrace Nature for a Happier You is out now.
Bring the joy you feel outside into your home this spring

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Meet the Austin architects who believe we can live beautifully in the present while protecting the next generation and beyond...
Pioneers of the Green Building movement, Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture have been devoted to providing comfortable, energy-efficient, high-performance architecture to central Texans for over 30 years.
Peter L. Pfeiffer, FAIA, President and Founding Shareholder of Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture fills us in on what they’ve achieved so far – and the things we should all be looking for in our next home. “As you look at the homes that are published these days, the vast majority of them repeat a trendy modern aesthetic that simply ignores the hot spring, summer and fall sun in our area, as well as in much of North America now thanks to climate change – including the discomfort and eye-strain that comes along with that, to say nothing of excessively high energy bills,” explains Pfeiffer. “They look trendy, but don’t live as well as they should, and I doubt they will be easy to take care of over the years, let alone the decades.
What is Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture's mission? To design highperformance buildings that are less expensive to operate and maintain, healthier to be in while still being comfortable and beautiful. ARTICLE BY SARAH IVENS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK ADAMS MEDIA

Life in Lost Creek in one of their designs
This is because the homes (and buildings) are not designed to shelter you very effectively from both the hot sun and the weather (rain). Such buildings may look trendy and cool but will get unnecessarily hot in the summer, be uncomfortable on a cold winter day, and their exterior finishes will fade, chip, get dirty and deteriorate. We approach things with our clients from a more mature perspective - we’ve been at this for over three decades now and seen at least three trendy styles come and go! We can achieve statement homes that provide luxurious living because they respond so well to the climate and climate change. They also become timeless. They look good with their proportional lines and massing, and are more comfortable inside. You live a better life, get sick less often, can enjoy glare-free reading with better use of reflected natural light, among many attributes. These homes have a more consistent temperature and humidity control from room to room, deal with sound and noise particularly well and last longer before the homeowner must invest in expensive maintenance. As a bonus, they tread very lightly on the environment – allowing the homeowner to live particularly well with a smaller carbon footprint. Finally, yes one can always invest in high-tech materials and solutions that ameliorate the negative effects of poor climate responsiveness by design – such as solar panels, Tesla batteries and other high-tech gizmos, but we see those as the ‘icing on the cake’ – fascinating things you add onto the solid foundation of a well-thought-out climate-responsive design.” For more information, go to barleypfeiffer.com

OFFICE FENG SHUI
Expert Beverly Biehl shares tried & true tips to Feng Shui your workspace
The Intuitive Interior founder says a Feng Shui misconception is most people think that a clutter-free home is ‘good Feng Shui.’ She says this isn’t necessarily true, but “by placing items in your space with intention and focus, you gain a feeling of power and control over your surroundings. Look at the stories of the stuff you surround yourself with. Do you still like what it is telling you?” Here she shares three Feng Shui tips people can incorporate into their office.
Instructions: 1/
Sit in the "Power Position." This means you have a solid wall behind you and aren't directly in line with the door to the room. If you are in a cubicle and can't avoid having your back exposed, drape a red sweater on the back of the chair to act as a STOP sign and add a small mirror to the side of your monitor to see who is coming up behind you.
2/
Avoid working in the bedroom. This is a space for sleep, snuggling and rejuvenation, not

watching TV or answering emails from your cell phone. If that is the only space for your home office, invest in a screen of some sort to block the view of your desk from your bed.
3/
Choose rounded corners for desks and avoid glass-top desks with metal legs. This combination increases the chances of opportunities "falling" through and can increase fatigue at the end of the day. Wood and wood-look materials are the best as they enhance growth and focus.
Beverly started studying Feng Shui in 2003 after completing treatments for breast cancer and a neighbor gave her a book on the Western version of Feng Shui as another way to get back to vibrant health. Learn more at TheIntuitiveInterior.com
