In England, my homeland, we have an expression that “an Englishman’s home is his castle” – the place we can feel safe, secure, like the king of our own world. In these discombobulating times of change and choices, unrest and illness, it’s even more important we all have that homely retreat we can go to after work, running errands, or school, to feel at ease and like ourselves. And this issue is all about achieving that – making your home and garden calmer, cooler, prettier… somewhere you want to be, where your family love to spend time restoring and replenishing themselves, and where your friends can come and visit and create happy memories. We’ve gathered some of Austin’s best interior designers, art experts and builders together to show you how to do this – and we get a sneak peek into some beautiful local homes, too. I don’t know about you but looking around other people’s houses and apartments feels like such a treat – and a great place for ideas and inspiration. You’re going to want to grab a pen and paper as you go through this issue, I assure you! So why not sit back in the favorite spot in your home – mine is a reading nook I have, a bright yellow comfy sofa nestled under my book shelves – and treat yourself to half an hour off of your busy life with ATX Lifestyle magazine. Happy reading!

N IC K K NOWS A RT. . . A N D H AS MOVED FROM LONDON TO AUSTIN TO KNOW AND GROW MORE! ARTICLE BY SARAH IVENS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SKYLAR REEVES
Londoner Campbell recognizes Austin as the US' most dynamic, up-and-coming art city and wants to be part of its future
What made you move to Austin? First, on a personal level, back in early 2021, a redheaded Texan [fiancée Kelly Frye] introduced me to Austin, and I have been intrigued ever since. Secondly, from a professional point of view, Austin’s art scene is small, but with huge potential for me to grow my business, Campbell Art Advisory. What do you love about Austin from an aesthetic angle? It feels like the entire city is a charming, leafy suburb, even if you are a few blocks from Downtown. Ancient Live Oaks create a constant canopy over streets that are filled with a patchwork of homes of all designs. The architecture is varied: big bold contemporary boxes are nestled next to mid-century gems and sweet little Victorian cottages, each with their own identity. I suppose the adage ‘Keep Austin Weird’ is the thru line for this city and why so many people are moving here from all over the world. There is character and personality around every corner. When buying art, how do you find a treasure? There is no hard and fast rule for finding a treasured piece of art, that’s part of the joy of it. Whether it’s at a graduate show, an international art fair, or simply walking the streets of an unknown city, you can find treasures everywhere. However, from a non-emotional, rational analysis, to truly decide if a work will continue to be a treasure, I try to answer the following questions: 1. Aesthetic - Does it visually appeal to me now and will that appeal last? 2. Originality - Is the execution unique or is the message new?
10
I NSP IR E D BY | A RTS + CULTURE
3. Past and Future - Where did the artist study? What awards have they won? Equally, what shows do they have coming up, and where is their next residency? 4. Price - How is the work priced when bearing in mind all of the above? Only once I have assessed these can I determine how much of a treasure a work is. In terms of where to find these works, pre-pandemic I went to, on average, about 25 art fairs worldwide each year. Times have changed, and as a result of COVID-19, almost all artworks at fairs are now also represented online, so I don’t have to attend nearly as many. Instagram has also become a very useful resource where one can discover interesting talent. I try to share works I find interesting on a regular basis at my handle @CampbellArtAdvisory. Personally, my collection is totally eclectic, which I think is indicative of who I am as a person and the journey I’ve been on since I began collecting 16 years ago. Any upcoming trends in the art scene for 2022? We are going to encounter a continued blurring of lines between traditional roles of art advisors, auction houses, gallery exhibitions and primary and secondary market sales. Advisors will host more pop-ups, as I plan on doing this year around the US, and specifically within Texas. Auctions will expand their gallery arms. Mega-galleries will collaborate to take large private collections away from auction houses. No doubt, the art world is in an interesting state of flux.

AUSTIN PREMIER NANNIES
Founder Meghan Copler
12
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HOME + S E RVI CE S
THE NANNY MATCHMAKER Meghan Copler started babysitting as a teenager and quickly blossomed her babysitting business to 15 families. Fifteen years later she’s launched Austin Premier Nannies. “Working with children is something that always came naturally to me. I considered becoming a teacher, but prefer working with families one-on-one. We caught up with Meghan to learn more. What inspired you to start Austin Premier Nannies? From a young age it was my dream to run my own company. After years nannying and working with some fantastic agencies I knew it was something that I wanted to bring here to Austin. As much as I loved working with kids on a daily basis, I absolutely love helping families find their perfect nanny as well as helping nannies find their dream job. It’s incredibly rewarding! Do you do primarily place live in nannies? Full-time nannies? Babysitters? We do it all! We place live-in, full-time, part-time, temporary care, summer nannies, Newborn Care Specialists, babysitters and event sitters. How long in advance do you have to book a babysitter for a date night? Families can search, book and pay a sitter from our list of pre-screened babysitters directly through our website. It is possible to book day-of, but since our sitters are in
such high demand, we recommend booking at least 72 hours in advance. Can a Newborn Care Specialist help teach new parents the basics of caring for a newborn? Newborn Care Specialists are trained to help guide and educate parents with all aspects of newborn care. This most often includes setting up healthy feeding and sleep schedules, helping with breastfeeding and caring for the baby at night so the parents can get some proper rest. What makes Austin Premier Nannies unique? Having worked with all kinds of families from across the country and Europe, I have truly seen and experienced it all. This experience has given me a much deeper understanding of how different families operate and what they may be looking for in their nanny. All our caregivers are carefully screened and must pass strict employment requirements. They’re at least 18-years-old with a minimum of 3 years of childcare experience, are CPR/ First Aid certified and background checked. As a former nanny myself, I’m a huge advocate for the nannies being represented by my agency. I know I have done my job well when both parties are happy. Learn more at austinpremiernannies.com or email Meghan at meghan@austinpremiernannies.com.

Your Closet Concierge Founder Todd O'Neill
The White Glove Service a Well-Heeled Closet Craves
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HOM E S E RVI CE S
Often times even Texas-size closets can’t accommodate keeping us organized. Smaller – forget about it. After we’ve spent years reducing clutter inspired by Kon Mari and getting rid of something every time we get something new, Todd O’Neill has devised an alternate solution to keeping closet inventory down and your wardrobe organized, without having to give anything up that you may pine for later. Meet Closet Concierge, a white glove storage service for your clothes unlike any other on the market We caught up with Todd to learn more about the new service that currently has a fee of $55/month to pick up, photograph, inventory and store items until you need all of them (or just a single piece!) back at home. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START CONCIERGE CLOSET? The idea for Concierge Closet stemmed from trying to solve two fundamental problems: a lack of closet space and a lack of time. My wife Stephanie is the founder and owner of Estilo Boutique. During her 17 years of building her business she’s had customers who complain of not being able to find something to wear in their closets. As she provides them with their clothing needs, she’s also been asked to help them find more space in their closets or to help them pair their new clothing with their existing wardrobe. Since clothing and fashion in general are an artistic expression and extension of someone’s personality, customers tend to have a constantly evolving wardrobe, sometimes rotating because of seasonality or change in what they consider “essential.” Additionally, cleaning out a closet can be a time-consuming endeavor. WHEN DID CONCIERGE CLOSET LAUNCH? My co-founder, Chancy Kennedy, and I began working on this mid-2021 and the soft launch was in December 2021. Stephanie was the first beta customer, followed by a few loyal Estilo customers.
WHAT SETS CONCIERGE CLOSET APART FROM OTHER SERVICES? Self-storage and even white-glove storage services don’t have item-level images and classification of what’s in storage. We come to your house, pick up the items that you don’t need right now, professionally photograph and document them, properly store the items and make them available for you to browse and request individually for return at any given time. HOW ARE THE ITEMS STORED? HANGING UP? ON SHELVES? IN BOXES? I spent a significant amount of time researching proper care and storage of clothing. We’ve experimented with a variety of hangers as an example. I’ve observed the deterioration of padded dry cleaning hangers and the dimpling effect that a hanger can have on a garment stored over a long period of time. Depending on the type and color of a garment, we have different color hangers with different contours and grip to maximize the shape and integrity of the product. We have a labeling system for classifying the location of an item and perform quality assurance spot checks to continue to assess the health of an item. WHAT IS THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF CONCIERGE CLOSET? The storage aspect of Concierge Closet is definitely an entry point into a much broader market. As a retailer, I have an in-depth understanding of the process and data that’s available from the wholesale market through the retail market. However, after a product is sold to a customer, the use and maintenance of a clothing item is a bit of a black box to brands and retailers. We ultimately see ourselves as the solution for storage, maintenance, and disposition of clothing post-sale. Our current focus is the Austin market but with future expansion into other cities through a few feature channels and partnerships. Find them at conciergecloset.com.

TOP TEN RULES FOR MAKING A PICTURE WALL PRETTY Interior designer Audrey Scheck is here to help
AUSTIN INTERIOR DESIGN GURU, AUDREY SCHECK HELPS YOU CREATE A PICTURE PERFECT GALLERY WALL
ARTICLE BY AUDREY SCHECK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH IVENS
16
H OW TO | HOM E + D ESIG N
Start your design with a plain wall color but not crazy!
1. Choose a wall with enough blank wall space, and without too much distraction. Paint the wall a solid color or use a simple textural grass cloth wallpaper. Nothing too busy! 2. When choosing frames, go one of two ways: they should ALL match, or they should all be mixed up – lots of styles, shapes, sizes and textures, vertical and horizontal. Don’t, for example, use five white rectangular frames then put up one black square frame. It will look like a mistake. 3. If you are hanging frames on top of a furniture piece, art work
should stay narrow above the confines of the furniture. The furniture should ground the space for your gallery wall.
4. Always lay things out on the floor in a big open area before you start putting things on the wall - use the floor to play with the frames, to mix and match the colors and sizes. 5. Think of it like a jigsaw. Don’t stack items perfectly, or measure gaps between everything to be identical. Imperfections are interesting.
6. The subjects of art you’re choosing to hang on a wall need to be the same i.e., color photos from the same family photo shoot, or really mixed up – think vintage photos, a selfie, an illustration, a piece of framed 3D art. If it’s all the same medium apart from one piece it will look like an error. 7. Once you are happy with the general layout on the floor, take
some measurements, then take that rendering to the wall. Find the center point on your furniture piece and in your gallery design. Mark both with tape. Begin with the picture that falls at the center of the piece of furniture.
8. Measuring matters!
The finished wall
Generally, the center point should be at eye level, leaving enough space above the furniture piece to display your Tchotchkes. Books are great to display. Bigger Books lying flat are great at grounding your decorative items, while standing smaller books up helps break up space.
9. Use nails or mounting tape. You choose. Whatever works with your wall and your DIY skills. 10. Once it’s done, step back and take a look and mark sure there’s no symmetry – nothing should be at the same height or distance. audreyscheckdesign.com
TOP TIP:
In design in general, when putting anything on a wall, place your favorite item on the left because the eye goes there first naturally. Left to right is how we learned to read, and it sticks with us on all things visual.

New home, new engagement, new chapters: Chris and Lauren have a lot to toast & celebrate
At Home with Chris Harrison and Lauren Zima BACHELORS NO MORE, CHRIS & LAUREN EMANATE LOVE, AND IT’S REFLECTED IN THE HOME AND LIFE THEY’VE BUILT TOGETHER
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURA MORSMAN, STYLED BY STEPHANIE COULTRESS O'NEILL
Chris Harrison and Lauren Zima bought their house in the summer of 2020 when it was just a slab overlooking a spectacular view. The former Bachelor host and Entertainment Tonight correspondent have since turned that land into not just a house, but a home built to fit their personalities, and with the help of the Kelle Contine Interior Design team, found décor to complete the character. Built from the ground up, everything is intentional, from the wine room (Chris’s favorite) and Spa-like primary bathroom (Lauren’s favorite) to the writing on the wall in the powder room, a media room with a wall of candy cannisters from Rabbet Labs filled with favorites from Jelly Bellies to M&Ms to their joint office and work by local artists telling stories on the walls throughout. We caught up with the couple, who got engaged in October after three years of dating, at their home on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon where sunlight spilled in through the copious windows, just right. I felt first-hand that their love is palpable as it radiated from the smiles when they look at each other, and we chatted about everything from Chris coming back home to Texas and why they chose and love Austin, to their home, love story and next chapters. “I always knew I wanted to eventually move back home to Texas. I’m from Dallas, my family is here and now both my kids will even be in college at TCU (I’m so proud!).” — Chris Harrison
What was the impetus or inspiration behind moving to Austin? Chris: I always knew I wanted to eventually move back home to Texas. I’m from Dallas, my family is here and now both my kids will even be in college at TCU (I’m so proud!). The question for me became if I would settle back home in Dallas. Since I was young, I’ve loved Austin, and when I knew my future was with Lauren -- that was the real deciding factor. I realized that I wanted us to start a life together somewhere neither of us had lived, to build our own unique memories, just with us. I took her to Austin and she fell in love with the city too.
with our builder, Heyl Homes, and the art hanging in it is a map of some of our favorite Napa vineyards. Lauren: My answer may be equally unusual, but it’s our main bathroom. I wanted it to be serene and bright. We picked a classic white marble with grey veining and added under-cabinet lighting to get that ‘escapist’ feel. But I love it most because it’s where we start and end our days together; we have some of our most personal talks and biggest laughs brushing our teeth in the morning, getting ready to go out for the evening or getting ready for bed at night.
What’s your favorite thing about Austin so far? Chris: My favorite thing about Austin is what’s always been my favorite thing about Texas - the people. I love being back home with good, fun-loving people…I would be remiss if I also didn’t mention the food, sunsets, music and now Austin FC. Lauren: The people, for sure. Everyone is so welcoming and so genuinely cares about each other. To be honest I had to get used to it!
When you’re at home, where do you spend the most time? Chris: Can I say the wine room again? In all seriousness, when the weather’s nice I love sitting outside. One thing I’ve gotten used to living in Southern California is being able to enjoy the outdoors. Our California room is comfortable, relaxing and has quickly become the spot where everyone likes to gather and enjoy a cocktail. Lauren: I also love that our den connects right to the California room; the den is just perfect for entertaining or relaxing. We wanted it to be a place where California and Texas met, which is why we chose these two stunning photos -- palm trees and a bull rider -- from Steve Wrubel, an amazing photographer out of Dallas. The couch is the perfect
What is your favorite room in the house? Chris: Am I allowed to say the wine room? Lauren and I love our wines and Napa is a very special place for us; it’s where we got engaged. The wine cellar was something special I added to the house myself, and I think it came out beautiful. We worked on the design

place to curl up together and watch movies, and everyone seems to love the candy bar! I wanted a really fun, different, “adult” way to make it feel like a movie theater in here, and Rabbet Labs made it possible and built this for us. It’s chic but playful!
Chris, in the office he shares with Lauren, with a guitar signed by REO Speedwagon gifted to him by his assistant Karen for his 50th birthday
And I love your joint office! Lauren: One thing I love so much about Chris is that he always puts me first, and I’m always his partner in everything, automatically -- I never have to ask to be seen or advocate to be included. I noticed as we were looking at houses, some people would assume the office was for the man. Chris made sure everyone knew this was our office from the get go; the custom steel desk is built for two, for us to work opposite each other and with each other. Who did the designing? Lauren: We worked with our builder, Heyl Homes, and their in-house designer on the structure and finishes. They were wonderful and do everything with such attention to detail and quality. For the interiors, we met with several firms but chose Kelle Contine Interior Design to work with and Kelle and her team have been phenomenal. They made choosing all the interiors such a fun process and really listened to our taste while guiding us along the way. We felt so taken care of. One thing that was important to us was to include work from some local companies and designers, and they found awesome people. Do you have the same decorative tastes? Lauren: I’d call it a joy and a blessing to discover that we had pretty much the same taste in everything for the house. I don’t know how people go through this process if they don’t! Kelle Contine and her team would show us what they’d chosen for a room, and we would immediately have all the same reactions. Or maybe…Chris was just telling me we had the same taste in everything?? Chris: No, Lauren and I really do have similar taste in our decor. I guess you never really know until you jump into a project like this but from the get go we never disagreed. I give a lot of credit to the ladies at Kelle Contine. They really listened to what our overall theme was and made our decisions so easy. The entire process felt seamless. When you moved in together, did you have to make some compromises on furniture or décor that came with you? Chris: The only thing we’re debating is our art. Art is very personal to me and I look forward to filling our house with incredible art that Lauren and I find together.
Lauren: The problem is we were having so much fun filling the wine cellar, we kind of tabled the art. But isn’t wine art?! Chris, what was your first impression of Lauren? Chris: My first impression of Lauren was that she was an incredibly savvy reporter; smart, and quick-thinking. And I learned she would always give me a challenging interview, but I really looked forward to her interviews for that reason. You’ve given a lot of advice on love and dating, did you ask anyone for advice when dating Lauren - or before proposing? Chris: I definitely didn’t need any advice in dating or falling in love with Lauren, but then again she makes it pretty damn easy to love her. Despite what I do for a living, I am a fairly private person. I actually didn’t tell anybody that I was going to propose until I called her mom the day before for her blessing. It was important to me to make that call before I proposed, but I also really wanted this to be a surprise and a special moment for Lauren and I was so CONTINUED >

nervous about anyone spilling anything. I told her mom and my kids. You’ll have to ask her but I think I pulled it off. Lauren: I was totally surprised. Of course, in the three years we’d been dating, we’d had conversations about getting married, but we’d never discussed timelines or specifics. The proposal and the whole weekend were so romantic and Chris put so much effort into planning it all. My favorite thing though, and what surprised me the most -- was something I haven’t shared before. When he proposed he handed me a letter. As I started to read it, I realized that he’d been writing this letter for months as he planned the proposal. Parts of it were written in LA, many parts of it were written here in our house in Austin. It was all about our relationship, our evolution and how he knew it was right. Reading the letter, that’s when I realized what was happening and of course started crying. Have you started wedding planning? Lauren: Not at all! My sister is getting married here in Austin in April, so our focus is totally on their celebration until then. What is your best memory from years on The Bachelor? Chris: I’m incredibly grateful for my years on The Bachelor. That job will always hold a special place in my heart, as it changed my life. My best memories of the show have more to do with my family and personal life than the show itself. I think of all the amazing trips we got to take and the experiences I got to share with my kids. Whether it was swimming with sharks in Belize or eating chocolate tacos (what my kids called crepes) in Paris overlooking the Eiffel Tower, those are the moments
that stand out to me. And now my greatest Bachelor moment was meeting the love of my life, Lauren. I’ll never forget the day that changed everything for us, which happened while I was shooting one of our specials on the Warner Brothers lot. She was there covering it for Entertainment Tonight, and during a break in filming we ran into each other at craft services and had a very personal conversation that changed everything between us. Lauren: Well, the truth is, and I’ve never said this publicly -- I was trying to run into him. In an interview we’d done not long before that day, for the first time I’d sensed a different vibe from him -- that maybe he was flirting a little. So, I followed my gut and I went to grab coffee at crafty hoping I’d run into him. He was there getting tea. So luckily, fate was on our side. And caffeine addiction. Chris, what’s your next chapter professionally? Chris: Stay tuned, because the next chapter is going to be even bigger than the previous one. Lauren: One thing that’s connected us so much in our relationship is being in the same industry. We understand each other’s jobs, we’re both creative -- I’m really excited for what’s next. Any plans to write another book? Chris: Writing The Perfect Letter back in 2015 was an amazing experience and the book has been incredibly well received. I’ve thought a lot about if I’ll pen another book and if I do … will it be a continuation of The Perfect Letter or will I head in a different direction? Stay tuned! What are you most looking forward to in 2022? Chris: The Next Chapter!

One cool woman, owner Amy
How did you get into the pool business? I come from a construction family and always loved seeing things being built - going from nothing to something. After college at St. Edwards University, I worked for a home builder, then a commercial real estate company, then for Big Red Dog Engineering, now WGI, where I got to learn about all aspects of a project, including civil, structural and MEP engineering. I was responsible for marketing and then human resources. While my entrepreneurial itch was being scratched, I knew I wanted to be doing more… So you set up Tiny Pools! I wanted to target yards like my own former yard where we built the first Tiny Pool - small yards, with difficult access, tight code restrictions, power lines - you name it! We have to think critically and get creative to make these pools work for our clients in challenging locations. We are passionate about not only bringing Tiny Pools to difficult spaces but about the environment and water safety, for people and animals. My family lost a small dog to a pool drowning when I was younger, and I had also begun supporting the Austin non-profit Colin’s Hope on their amazing mission to prevent childhood drowning. So, as we were building our first tiny pool in my yard, I was also designing our patent pending sliding deck cover - a huge safety feature, and also an environmental one. It prevents evaporation in our hot Texas weather. Pools can wasteful and I feel strongly about building pools which are responsible to the space allowed. Bigger is not always better! You’re one of the few woman-owned construction companies in Austin. It’s no secret being a woman in the construction world is still somewhat of an anomaly. I have to work
harder and shout louder to be heard. But I believe women bring a different perspective to home design and construction: we communicate differently and maybe hear different pain points and desires than others might. Is getting a swimming pool tricky right now? We are still in the midst of what we call “pandemic panic” around home improvement projects. Everyone continues to spend more time at home; no one knows how much longer the world will be like this. Extreme winter weather like we had in February 2021 also impacts pool construction and trades that are able to build your pool. We live in Austin where it’s hot - lots of people want a pool, and not just from Tiny Pools! Pool building trades and materials are seeing a ton of inflation and vulnerability. There is so much demand that we are all having to predict and respond to in our pricing, construction timeframes, and more. But we need to cool down! We love Austin but it gets so hot! A pool is a big investment but one that brings family and friends opportunities to connect for years to come. Even though we get in the triple digits in the summer, being outside is a part of the Austin vibe - and a pool makes that possible! And now you might be reality television stars? We were so excited to be contacted by HGTV in early 2021 because they were interested in a potential show featuring Tiny Pools. We had several meetings and did some filming with them… we’ll see if it goes anywhere!

Spring is the season when colors return to nature and the same goes for fashion. Elevate your style and your mood by brightening your wardrobe with one of your favorite colors. For women, pink, purple, blue, and orange are all the new black for the spring season. Just like the spring sun: the brighter the better. Men should not shy away from color either. Rich or soft blue and pale shades of green add color to your look and mirror the weather outside. As the weather warms, “dress” it up. From minis to maxis, you have numerous choices that are both feminine and fun. Floaty floral dresses are reminiscent of spring’s floral blooms so be sure to include them in your spring wardrobe. Short sets are on-trend this season and create a complete look that’s comfortable and chic. Style it up with a pair of boots or keep it casual with sandals or sneakers. Spring is nature’s season of growth. Let your spring style show your confidence and personality.
