DECEMBER IS A TIME TO REMINISCE... TO REFLECT ON THE YEAR WE’VE HAD Not many of us have been untouched by the changes and surprises, restrictions and difficulties of the last 12 months. Some of us will be happy to say goodbye to 2021 – me included. But amongst the tough times there’s been moments of love, fun and lightness too. fans in a sea of green on a Saturday, or bathing in beautiful blue-sky mornings at the top of Mount Bonnell, or sharing stories and sunset cocktails on the patio of Lutie’s and Honey Moon Spirit Lounge with dear friends, my family and I have found ways to soothe our jangling nerves and rattling brains. Connecting to Austin and my fellow imported or native Austinites has made everything feel a little easier. I cherish the good places and the good people, and have been so impressed by the strength and kindness I’ve witnessed in our community this year. I hope you can look back and find moments that have brought you joy, too. As Willie Nelson said, ‘there’s a freedom you begin to feel the closer you get to Austin,

YOU MENTIONED YOUR FAMILY ARE FROM THE MIDWEST, SO YOU’RE ANOTHER AUSTIN IMPORT. I was born in London, and believe it or not, Princess Diana was my daycare teacher. You know those famous photos of her when she was very young, with those children hanging off her? I was one of those children. I don’t remember her, and she was only Lady Di at the LALA’S LITTLE NUGGET MAKES ANYONE WHO WALKS

It’s stuck in a little, quiet strip mall on Justin Lane, and if you didn’t know it was there, you’re going to drive straight by it, but inside is this warm, holiday hideaway. Who’d have thunk it? I’d been a few times over the years as a patron before I got professionally involved with it, and it really appealed to my Midwest roots. My family are from Wisconsin and Lala’s reminded me of home, almost like I’d stumbled into a neighborhood bar set up in my grandma’s basement. IT OPENED IN 1972. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BUY IT? In 2015, when friends told us that the founder

Frances Lala was in ill health and looking to sell. We knew her bar still had an iconic part to play in Austin’s future, and a home in our community, so we got in there and negotiated the purchase.

Frances did with the money from the sale? She split it with her one longtime employee for her retirement. Frances sadly passed away about a year and a half later, but Lala’s is still the place she grew, a place where people can come to celebrate the best moments in life, recover from the worst moments in life, or to sit on their own at the bar and feel welcomed. We open every day at 4 p.m., and we switch on Jeopardy and the regulars who’ve been coming in since the early 70s shout answers at the screen. Then they make way for the new to Austin, younger crowd from about 8 p.m. onwards. In November and December, people line around the block past midnight to get in. Its fun to be discovered by a whole new group of people. CONTINUED >

HOT COCOA WITH EXTRA KICK
The second story is Frances’ husband left her right before Christmas, and she fell into a depression and didn’t come to work for a long time. Two or three months went by before she could get herself together to get back into the bar, and her staff, not knowing what to do, had left the decorations up, and they
+ 1 ½ ounces of Peppermint S chnapps or Cinnamon Whiskey + 1 cup of milk + 2 to 3 tsps . of cocoa powder
agreed it made the place warm and comfortable, cheering, so they stayed up. The final rumor is that for her first Christmas running Lala’s, she put a lot of decorations up, and when she took them down in January the place looked naked… so she put them straight back up again and decided it would stay that way forever. And even though it’s a nightmare to dust, those decorations have stayed ever since. They mean so much to our patrons, and have grown organically over the years. We could just go to Lowe’s and buy a bunch of decorations and

put them on the wall but that’s not the story of the bar. The story of the bar is the people who make it happen. Often when a family member passes away, our regulars come in with their mother’s nativity scene or their grandfather’s snow globe and ask to leave it there. Its flattering they choose to immortalize their loved ones in our crappy little bar. It means something reverberated in them that drew them to us, and made them want to become part of it. years is in the fabric of what makes this place so special.
The first one is the most well-known, that Frances’ son left for Vietnam right before Christmas, and she promised not to take down the decorations in the bar until he came home from the war. He never returned, so the decorations never came down. Hayes Carll wrote a song about it called Jesus and Elvis, and Kenny Chesney covered it and made it a top ten hit on the country chart a few years ago. It’s a really cool song about Christmas, representing Jesus the King of Kings and the velvet picture of Elvis we have on the wall here at Lala’s, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

A look of adoration and admiration John Paul reflects right back. “I dragged him here,” Eloise, a native Texan says of

getting California-born and raised John Paul to move to Austin decades ago and make it the place they’d call home and raise their children. “We looked the world over and we had a two-year-old son,” John Paul says, “And we thought, ‘Where do we want to raise him?’ It could have been anywhere in the world. We picked Austin for the community, you can’t beat it. It has some of the best schools in the nation, it’s family oriented and there are good family values here.” After decades here, their love for Austin (and each other) has only grown. Eloise says, “We love hiking the trails and the parks. We love being outside. And then, of course, the music festival. We love music. And I Iove the spirit of Austin. I just feel like everybody’s heart is in the right place here.” John Paul adds, “My favorite thing is that a week does not go by where Austin doesn’t provide a variety of things to do. In Austin you have your choices and you can get involved if you want to. A lot of our friends come through who are musicians, we could go out and see them or we can have an easy weekend and just go outside here (at home). There’s beautiful water, the dogs run around, you can sit back and read and you are someplace else, not in a big city. It’s a beautiful place. Made more beautiful by the life they’ve built there.

GIVING BACK
Gratefully
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
