What style are you dreaming of?
Greg and Elizabeth Glance love the mountains, and their life there together. The recently married couple sought to build a Craftsman style home that both reflected them as a couple and spoke to their love of nature, and of their mountain surroundings. The Glances appreciated Living Stone’s reputation as a green builder. “Green building was very important to us, and to our lifestyle” affirms Greg. “We wanted a home that was very energy efficient. We wanted to do our part to preserve the beauty of the place we love so much, and have always called home.”

AS A LIVE-IN NANNY TO MY NEPHEW AND A LOVER OF MY TWO CATS AND TWO DOGS, I FEEL A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THE STORIES IN THIS ISSUE. I've been an animal lover my whole life, and giving these sweet souls a spotlight is good for the heart. I hope it offers you some warmth as well, and if you're looking for a new companion, Brother Wolf is the best place to start. Read all about how they're rebuilding for the community on Page 18. And for those of you with children, why not take them by the shelter and let them take the dogs for a walk? And afterward, you can grab a scoop from Ultimate Ice Cream, the best summer treat with flavors for every palate. August is truly a magical time for adventures like these. It's that sweet, slow time between the hectic days of summer and the start of a new school year. It's a time to reflect, relax and enjoy simple pleasures before the air starts turning cool and we begin to retreat indoors for a season. So go out, make the most of it, and we'll see you again in September.

COMPASSIONATE DENTAL CARE IN GUATEMALA ARTICLE TRISTA PRUITT
IT’S NO DOUBT THAT RED MAPLE DENTAL HAS AFFECTED THE LIVES—AND MOUTHS—OF MANY PEOPLE IN ASHEVILLE. However, their efforts go beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains and into the humbled hilltops of Guatemala, where Dr. Shawna Hoffert and her husband, Steve, embarked on a mission to offer their services to those in a less fortunate area of our world. “It all started when I was a kid. My dentist did a lot of mission work, and I, as a Christian, decided that’s what I wanted to do as well,” Dr. Hoffert says. “Unfortunately, my dentist passed away at a young age from a heart condition no one knew he had. I had just gotten into dental school when he passed away and, of course, I went along with my plan to become a dentist.” As many can relate, life got in the way of Dr. Hoffert’s dream to do mission work. That is until October of last year when an opportunity arose to travel abroad and provide services for those in need. “I started an interesting continuing education program called Spear out in Phoenix. I had been going for a while when they mentioned they had a mission aspect to their organization. So I signed up and went down to the very first clinic they opened up.” It was in Peronia, about an hour outside of Antigua. So far, they’ve opened seven clinics in Guatemala. Spear supports the clinics financially, administratively and also with doctors traveling there to work for them. It was a perfect match for Dr. Hoffert.
“IT ALL STARTED WHEN I WAS A KID. MY DENTIST DID A LOT OF MISSION WORK, AND I, AS A CHRISTIAN, DECIDED THAT’S WHAT I WANTED TO DO AS WELL,” DR. HOFFERT SAYS.
“I saw the highs and lows of Guatemala during my commute between Antigua and Peronia,” Dr. Hoffert says. “You walk in the clinic in the morning, and it’s already full of about 50 people just waiting to be seen.” In a typical day, each dentist would see around 8 to 10 patients, and as they were treating them, Guatemalan students of dentistry would observe and ask questions. This is how the clinic continues long-term dental care, by allowing students to learn from U.S. dentists and raise their level of care to an American standard. At the end of the day, everyone’s mission was the same.

(CON TI N U ED)
“We were all there making an effort to keep these people healthy, and it was an honor working with such a trusting and loving population,” Dr. Hoffert says. She says they even made them a home-cooked lunch every day, and after clinic hours, they had the opportunity to explore Antigua. When asked if they’d be back soon, Dr. Hoffert seemed hopeful. “We’ll definitely keep doing mission work, but we’re looking at different locations now,” she says. For many people living in underprivileged areas, finding accessible and affordable dental care can be challenging. “If the local clinics couldn’t do the treatment, they’d refer patients to the hospital, and there’s such a great barrier for many of them to even get to the hospital. It was such a blessing for us to share our skills and let them be in their own home without having the burden of traveling far to find someone who can do that treatment,” Dr. Hoffert says. Because of this need, she’s eager to continue mission work where it’s needed. It wasn’t only medical treatment offered either. One of Dr. Hoffert’s favorite memories actually came from a woman who just wanted to be happier with her smile. “We had a lady who really wanted her front two teeth fixed just to look better. I spent over an hour doing composites on her front teeth to resurface them, basically giving her veneers. I remember when we were done she was just so happy. She said, ‘Wow I can’t believe you can make me look like this!’” To learn more about Dr. Hoffert and her practice, visit SmileAsheville.com.

BROTHER WOLF ANIMAL RESCUE 18
Asheville Lifestyle | August 2019
GETTING BACK TO THE ROOTS ARTICLE TRISTA PRUITT PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHAN PRUITT
“NORTH CAROLINA IS ONE OF THE WORST STATES IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY FOR THE EUTHANIZATION OF COMPANION ANIMALS. THERE IS SO MUCH WORK TO BE DONE.”
SAMMY Sammy is super sweet and loves to sit on laps.
BROTHER WOLF ANIMAL RESCUE HAS BEEN A STAPLE OF THE ASHEVILLE COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS. Hundreds of dogs and cats have found their forever home, and many families have fallen in love with their best friend because of BWAR. As widely known and loved as it is, however, Brother Wolf recently found itself in some financial trouble. Luckily for Asheville, Leah Craig has stepped up as the executive director, and she is working tirelessly toward getting the shelter back on track. Before she took the executive director role at Brother Wolf, Leah was the development director at the Nature Center, and she’s brought her experience to rebuild Brother Wolf into the organization it needs to be for the community. The focus is now shifting back to the adoption shelter and away from the proposed sanctuary farm in Leicester. “Unfortunately the organization had tried to grow so quickly in such a short amount of time that they had really taken on a project that they couldn’t afford,” Leah says. “We had to make really critical decisions in CONTINUED >

order to cut costs, and one of the biggest ones was to decide to sell the sanctuary. It was a very unfinished project, and nothing ever came to fruition.” With the pressures of a project as big as a sanctuary farm of their hands, Brother Wolf can now return their focus to the organization’s core mission: To build no-kill communities. “North Carolina is one of the worst states in the entire country for the euthanization of companion animals. There is so much work to be done,” she says. Just this year, Brother Wolf will affect the lives of about 10,000 animals. In order to do this effectively, it’s critical they cut costs where they can and reach out to the community to help during this time of rebuilding. “To me and many other people, it’s critical that Brother Wolf is here and able to run these lifesaving programs,” Leah says. “It is a difficult time in the organization’s history, but it’s also exciting because Brother Wolf will come out of this. We’ve already seen tremendous response from the public.” CONTINUED >

Leah is excited to help Brother Wolf get back to its roots, starting with a sharp focus on the shelter animals and staff. She also stresses how important it is for them to put best practices into place and to follow a standard. “We’re looking at putting best practices into place, like a budget. We’ve put a budget into place and created a leadership staff so we have multiple voices and multiple points of view when decisions are being made. We’re also forming a board, as any successful nonprofit should. We’re up to six board members, and we’re interviewing more. We’re also still looking for a lawyer and a CPA who feels passionate about animal rescue and is eager to get involved.” In the past, there were three Brother Wolf chapters, but as the organization is rebuilding, the other two chapters—one in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, and one in Virginia—will spin off into their own nonprofit so Brother Wolf can shift its focus entirely to the shelter. If you’d like to get involved, there is always a need for volunteers, fosters and, of course, financial assistance. Outward Hounds is a wonderful way to spend time outside with some incredible dogs, and fostering can be a short-term commitment for those able to take on an animal at home. “We’re rebuilding trust with the community and being as transparent as we can,” Leah says. “The only thing we know
C R E AT I N G Sanctuaries
to do is to tell the truth and ask the community to rebuild with us. We’re seeing a lot of donors and volunteers coming back, which is really rewarding. If anyone walked away from Brother Wolf in the past, for whatever reason, I really hope they give us another chance.” For more information, visit BWAR.org.

Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
