Similarly, today we're known as an enclave of wellness, creativity and progressive thinking on matters of environmental and social sustainability. Being ahead of the curve on the "eco" lifestyle will continue to make Asheville a national gem and draw more people here, a trend which we're excited to participate in. Our Best to You and Yours,

GIVING BACK
a bountiful harvest ARTICLE EMILY GLASER PHOTOGRAPHY AMELIA FLETCHER
THE LORD'S ACRE GIVES BACK IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE THERE IS PROVERB THAT’S BEEN UTTERED FROM THE MOUTHS OF CANNY PEDAGOGUES FOR CENTURIES: GIVE A MAN A FISH, AND YOU FEED HIM FOR A DAY. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. The statement rings true no matter how you twist the metaphor. For example: Teach someone to grow things in the dirt, to love the dry cracks of soil on their hands as they pull vegetables from the ground like so many multicolored gems, to savor the crisp bite of their labors, and you feed them for a lifetime. Such thoughts are the stimulants for local nonprofit The Lord’s Acre. “The intent of the original group was to grow food for our local food pantry,” says Susan Sides, Garden Manager and Program’s Director of the Fairview-based garden. The old adage (or at least the thought behind it) prompted the organization to do more. “Pretty quickly the board wasn’t happy with just giving food away. We had a lot of potential in our group, and we wanted to address the underlying issues that cause folks to need pantries in the first place.” So they decided to do something more. The core concept of The Lord’s Acre, she notes, is economic in nature. Many of Western North Carolina’s underprivileged residents are hungry, and while pantries are a great temporary solution, they only sustain rather than alleviate the greater problem. So The Lord’s Acre adjusted their endeavors to reflect broader intentions for change. By expanding their scope, The Lord’s Acre not only bolstered their economic impact, they also began to foster community. “We decided we wanted the group to create a place where anyone would feel welcome to come, so people can break down the barriers they have,” Sides adds.

GIVING BACK
(CON TI N U ED)
The Lord’s Acre currently has five arms, all of which intentionally amend community fracture and facilitate independence. They still donate produce to Food for Fairview, a local food pantry, as well as the Fairview Welcome Table, a free weekly lunch that stitches together different communities with threads of good food. A partnership with Green Opportunities Kitchen Ready program (which cultivates valuable kitchen skills in folks down on their luck so they can gain employment in local restaurants) familiarizes students with more exotic ingredients like edible flowers, ginger, and turmeric. The Lord’s Acre also donates produce to Bounty & Soul, which distributes the goods via free food markets, delivering nutrition and knowledge in one fell swoop. Finally, the organization hosts their own Share the Harvest Market, which encourages local gardeners to share their harvest alongside The Lord’s Acre. The Market returns to the parking lot next to the log cabin church just above the Fairview library on Thursdays from 11:30 - 1:00 in spring. But perhaps the way The Lord’s Acre gives back the most is through the land itself. Harried millennials, rowdy families, and composed retirees alike gather under the summer sun to plant, weed, harvest, and celebrate the green things that grow from the nonprofit’s grounds. Like muddy tinctures of old, it’s the dirt of The Lord’s Acre that serves as a healing bandage for our community. TheLordsAcre.org | 26 Joe Jenkins Road, Fairview

ECHOVIEW FARM & FIBER MILL'S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE DRIVE THE BACKROADS AROUND ASHEVILLE, AND YOU’LL FIND DOZENS OF IDYLLIC HOMESTEADS AND HOBBY FARMS—BUT NONE QUITE LIKE ECHOVIEW FARM AND FIBER MILL. It’s a venture born—like so many Ashevillian enterprises—of passion for this place we call home. After Julie Jensen roamed the Blue Ridge while taking her kids to and from Brevard’s Camp Carolina, she fell in love; years later, she settled on a small farm in Weaverville that gradually expanded, naturally evolving into what is now Echoview Farm. There you’ll find honeybees, a roost of chickens, fields of flowers and crops with natural dyes, and two small herds of fiber animals, alpacas and angora goats. Those fiber animals, and the industries around them, are what inspired Jensen’s second venture under a similar appellation: Echoview Fiber Mill. “As I got deeper into the communities around my interests here in WNC (farming and fiber), I kept hearing people say that there needed to be a mill like Echoview, and I listened,” Jensen explains of the impetus for the mill. “There was not a great regional outlet for fiber farmers, so I wanted to create that, but I also wanted to build something that reflected my aesthetic and values; the result has been full of surprises. The original intent of the mill was to have a place where fiber farmers could have their fiber turned into yarn for their farm shops. The business has evolved as we have been developing products that we market where we simply buy and use local fiber, and I think that in many ways this arrangement has worked better for both us and the fiber farmers as there is a lot less risk involved for everyone.” Echoview’s operations are wholly dedicated to sustainability. By working with Appalachian farms (and their own) and using local materials from renewable resources, the products they turn out—everything from luxuriously soft yarn in a rainbow of natural colors to chunky throw pillows to draping ponchos—are environmentally-friendly. Solar panels supply 50% of the electricity at the mill, and because everything is done in-house (most fiber goes from raw cut to finished product in one building), the carbon footprint of each item is negligible. Those products, as well as farm fresh eggs from Echoview Farm, are available in Echoview’s shop, a testament to beautiful minimalism (much like the enterprise itself). As spring unfolds in lush shades of green, we can’t help but ask: what’s next for Echoview? “I hope that we can continue to grow more dye plants at the farm for dying yarn at the mill, which is a big experiment for us,” Jensen says, adding that yak fiber might be another fun undertaking. But more than products, Echoview continues to be about place, and the people in it: “For the mill, we plan to continue to grow and foster a community of makers, and are really looking forward to expanding our team and our yarn lines,” Jensen adds. What started as a small farm has expanded into an influential hub or sustainability and craft, as Jensen continues to inspire the passion for our mountains that began it all.

PRETTY POM-POMS
PHOTOGRAPHY EVAN ANDERSON Using Echoview’s own locally-sourced yarn, Grace Gouin shares a project that’s fun for all ages: pom-poms! These trendy, happy-hued accents are perfect for adorning wee one’s bookshelves, party banners, or even next year’s Christmas tree. 1. Pick your yarns and colors based on the look you want to go for! Of course, we suggest using all-natural, eco-friendly yarns made right here at Echoview—but almost any yarn will do. 2. Grab your pom-pom making tool. We used the Clover Pom Pom Makers, but also highly recommend the Pom Pom tools made by Loome (Which we carry in our shop!). 3. For the Clover makers, you first need to open up the pom-pom making arms, and use your yarn to wrap around and around the colored arms of the pom-pom maker. Once you're done with the first side, you wrap the second side. You can use all one color, or change colors to create a pattern. 4. Once both sides are wrapped and the arms of the pom-pom maker are folded in so that it is closed, cut the wrapped yarn open using your scissors by snipping the yarn along the grooves between the arms on both sides of the pom-pom maker. Be careful to keep the pom-pom maker closed while you do this! 5. Once all your yarn has been snipped, take a single piece of yarn and tie it all the way around the pom-pom maker so that when you tie a knot, the yarn slides into the grooves of the pom-pom maker and pulls nice and tight. You'll want to tie the knot twice so that it is very secure! 6. After you've tied the knot tight, you'll open the arms of the pom-pom maker back up on both sides, and then grab the center pieces of the pom-pom maker and pull them apart. Your pom-pom will now be free! 7. If you like the shaggy look of the pom-pom then you can leave it as-is, but if you want to clean it up a bit just grab your scissors and trim, trim, trim. The more you trim the yarn, the rounder and more even your pom-pom will look. 8. You can take the long ends of the yarn you used to tie the pom-pom together and knot them at the top to make an ornament, or you can trim those short with the rest of the pom-pom. You can also thread a long piece of yarn with a large tapestry needle and then thread the long yarn through the pom-pom. Add more pom-poms to this long yarn to make a pom-pom garland! 20

DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK
The Iconic Ioniq ARTICLE WESLEY BROWN
MANY MAY TRY, BUT ONLY ONE CAR CAN TAKE THE TITLE OF THE MOST FUEL-EFFICIENT CAR IN AMERICA. That designation belongs to the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. Decked in a sleek, aerodynamic package, the Ioniq Hybrid’s form echoes its function, and the drag coefficient, or “Cd,” is a low 0.24. Under the hood you’ll find a Kappa 1.6L direct-injected Atkinson-cycle fourcylinder engine with an unrivaled thermal efficiency of 40%. The engine delivers an estimated 104 horsepower and an estimated 109 lb.-ft. of torque, so you don’t have to compromise get-up for green elements. The Ioniq is designed to stand out from the growing pack of ecofriendly vehicles with a dynamic and engaging driving experience, but the priority lies in delivering a cleaner means of mobility.
FRAME Where most cars use steel, the Ioniq employs aluminum for a lighter frame that’s more ecofriendly in its sourcing and longterm emissions.
MPG The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid offers an all-electric range of more than 29 miles, 119 MPGe in EV mode and
