ecember: it's amazing how a month that is usually so cold can conjure up such feelings of warmth. The smell of pine that hits you the day after you put up your tree is one of my favorite things, along with putting the kids on my shoulders to put the star on the tip-top. A month to celebrate memories that have been made and those being made. Annual traditions among family (the 6 hour marathon game of Risk was always a favorite of mine) and friends are part of what makes this so special. December revolves around the idea of giving the best of what you have, be that time, food, gifts or money, and with so many amazing people in our lives and worthwhile causes to donate to, I wish I had more days spent in the December mindset of give first, ask questions later. I implore everyone reading to take time this month to appreciate the people who make your life, and the lives of others, better. Those who are selfless and who live in the December state of mind, no matter how cold it is outside, are a constant source of warmth and comfort to those around them.

Some Kind of Magic DÉSIRANT OFFERS THE ARTS TO ASHEVILLE ARTICLE EMILY GLASER | PHOTOGRAPHY AMELIA FLETCHER

Asheville Lifestyle | December 2016

hen George Vanderbilt envisioned the triumphant edifice that would become Biltmore Estate, it was threaded with French arts and influence, stained with his memories of Châteauesque-style French Renaissance abodes in the countryside. Architect Richard Morris Hunt laid out his extensive plans in the French style and infused them with a special kind of refinery, and Vanderbilt recruited French artisans and makers to complete the tasks within the home. Those French immigrants settled in our hills, influencing aspects of Asheville we all love today: French patisseries, delicate architectural flairs, our artistic soul and most recently the shopping experience at Désirant. Wrapping through several rooms of the historic building on Broadway, Désirant draws its unique, chic flair from our French history and many of its wares from the fields of France itself. VicePresident Brett Kruger embarks on cross-continental explorations, roaming the markets and antique shops of France to find finely-curated mementoes and antiques to sell in Désirant. Shopping at Désirant is reminiscent of a cross-continental exploration in itself. “That’s something you can tell about this place—it’s an adventure,” says Shelby Evans, Creative Director and General Manager of the boutique. Strolling the expansive rooms of Désirant (over 7,000 square feet of them) is like walking through the antiquated markets of the French countryside—you never know what surprise you’ll stumble upon. Local wares integrate seamlessly with handcrafted gifts from around the country and the world. Evans describes the store as part gift shop, part boutique. “It’s so eclectic, you could find gifts for five different people,” she says. Some of the items in the store embody that eclecticism, like the Carolbilt clocks; the artisan uses various vintage and antique parts collected through her travels. She loves to go antiquing, having always been inspired by small trinkets of different shapes and textures with which she makes her
clocks. She outfits her creations with feathers, an unintentional twist on the idiom “Time flies” that lends the clocks a whimsically soft tick that draws a smile from passerby. The clocks sit atop dark-grained tables and lightly-rusted shelves brought across the wide Atlantic from France, an iconic representation of Désirant’s ideals. Nearly every item in the shop also epitomizes the artistic intentions of the Désirant team. Take, for example, the new terrarium lamps from local artist Ricky Sellers. In an exclusive project designed for Désirant, Sellers builds delicate and verdant terrariums within glass-bulbed lamps, creating functional art. “The bridge I’m trying to make here is to give artists a vehicle for people to relate to their work in a functional way,” says Evans, who received her degree in fine arts with a concentration in sculpture. "Coming from an art background into a retail area, that really seems to be my job—to tell artists how their work is marketable and to create beneficial relationships; to allow people to live beautifully and to do the things they love.” Art is truly at the heart of Désirant. Co-owners and brothers Richard and Michael Krieger are patrons of the arts; when they discovered Asheville they fell in love with the city and the delicate artistic heartbeat that pumps at our center. They wanted to create a fine gallery, boutique and hotel, to invest in Asheville and fill a niche. Désirant upholds that artistic community they first fell for through their wares and aesthetic. Evans envisions the shop taking an even more artistic turn in the future, with windows serving as artist installations and possibly even an upscale bar to foster artistic discussions over drinks as part of the Désirant experience.
The artistic process and exploration define Désirant. “We’re not just here to make money, we have a lot more soul than that,” Evans explains. “And Asheville has a soul, and that’s why we belong here. A place that can sustain the arts like this place can has some kind of magic.”

a sweet Escape TR EEHOUSE VINE YAR DS OFFERS VINES, WINES AND VIE WS ARTICLE AUSTIN BENNETT
W
hen we arrived at Treehouse Vineyards, the first thing that hit me was the smell. The muscadine grapes lace the wind with a sweetness that's unmistakable, as Southern as tupelo honey—and as sweet, too. The second thing was the juxtaposition of the beautiful vineyard, spread across rolling, rural hills, and the neighborhood that surrounded it, a suburban setting with cracked streets and monotonous, ranch-style homes. How did we arrive at this surprisingly beautiful oasis in a sea of suburbia? My beautiful wife and I recently decided that we needed to take a night away from everything except each other. On the suggestion of our friend Peter Flann of French Broad Vignerons, we drove south to Monroe, North Carolina, a bustling little town on the crooked divide of the two Carolinian states. Here we found out retreat: Treehouse Vineyards. We were greeted by the unmistakably Southern charm of the owners Phil and Diane Nordan, and by a familial atmosphere that fosters relaxation and revelry. We began our stay with a tour alongside an amazingly diverse group of people. Phil taught us everything about the vineyard, from the grapes (viniferous) to the corks (the bark of the cork oak tree), all with great deadpan humor. The land that the vineyard sits on and oversees has been in Diane's family for 200 years. Her father Cyrus built the neighborhood that surrounds the 38-acre vineyard throughout the later half of the last century, which gives even more credence to the relaxed, familial vibe of Treehouse. The best part, of course, was when we got to taste the vino. As we began our tasting and learned the origins of the names of each of the wines, we dove deeper into the history of the vineyard. Phil first decided to plant grapes and establish a true vineyard in 2005 and harvested their first production grapes in 2010. With names like Her Way Cabernet (an Alana favorite) and Liquid Sunshine, it's fun to hear the stories behind how these wines got their names. 26
Asheville Lifestyle | December 2016
Following our tasting, it was time to check into our private treehouse. But “treehouse” doesn't really do this building justice. We were in a 1,000-square-foot, two story, well-appointed tree-mansion, built between four trees. The height of the house affords breathtaking views of the vineyard, especially from the wraparound porch and the second story master suite. We grabbed two rockers on the vineyard’s expansive patio and settled in with a fresh bottle of wine. While watching their two horses, Bailey and Seven, lazily stroll through the fields (and Bailey occasionally munch on a grape—he’s an excellent judge of when to harvest), we asked the staff where we should go eat that night. Their answer was as immediate as if I had asked the color of the sky: “Hilltop.” At Hilltop Fish Fare & Steak House, we were encouraged to meet the family who has owned the restaurant for decades and who continue to run its daily operations. Owner Spiro, a figure in the local community, built the massive restaurant, which was bustling and filled to the brim with merrily munching customers. After we ordered we noticed an older couple at the bar casually talking and rolling silverware. We asked our server (who was excellent, shoutout to Pineapple!) who they were, and she let us know they were the owner's parents and they came in often, just to help around the restaurant. In just one night, we met three generations of the restaurant’s family—it truly is a family business, run with passion and care. We returned to our treehouse full of delicious steak and fish. The weather that evening was as close to perfect as I can remember, with a cool breeze blowing the sweet air around us. We decided the wraparound porch would be where we enjoyed our wine that evening. Sitting on that porch, watching the sunset over the vines and smelling the sweet breeze, was not only a wonderful and surprising experience, it was exactly the escape we needed and one we’ll surely take again soon.

or two months every year, America’s largest and grandest home becomes a palatial, sparkling showcase of all things Christmas: dozens of trees decked in shimmering lights and handcrafted ornaments, hundreds of feet of redolent garland wrapped thickly around banisters and door frames and chandeliers, bright pops of fresh holly and poinsettias, and softly glimmering candles that cast a warm glow across visitor’s faces. Biltmore is our greatest destination, but during the holidays it becomes so much more as it transforms into a sparkling harbor of the season. Turning the Southern palace into a winter wonderland is no easy feat; in fact, the transformation involves four weeks of initial decorating, near-constant upkeep through the holiday months, and seven full-time designers supplemented with passionate seasonal help. And at the forefront of it all you’ll find Cathy Barnhardt, Biltmore’s Floral Displays Manager and progenitor and manager of Christmas at Biltmore. When Barnhardt began her work in the greenhouses of Biltmore nearly 40 years ago, Christmas at Biltmore was practically nonexistent; the estate had only been open through the holidays for a few years and they decorated sparsely with a couple trees and ornaments in the house’s main rooms. When Barnhardt’s boss instructed her to “do Christmas,” she never envisioned the process to come. Today, planning and executing Christmas at Biltmore is a year-round process. During the holiday season, Barnhardt and her team begin planning the season to come, walking through current displays and tossing around ideas, contemplating and conceptualizing extensive plans over a year in advance. Designers work through the summer crafting decorations for the Christmas to come. And when October hits, the season truly begins as the home undergoes its annual metamorphosis. “We decorate in layers,” Barnhardt explains as we step through a throng of gape-mouthed tourists who stand distracted by the already stunning Christmas displays. Barnhardt walks through the hallowed halls of the historical abode with homey confidence, greeting every employee with a personal quip and introducing her designers with sweet personableness. It’s obvious that this is her home.

The estate’s gift shop for the green-thumbed offers free, seasonal workshops. Through November and December gardeners teach the art of crafting winter wreaths and delicate, seasonal tabletop topiaries. CHRISTMAS AT BILTMORE DAYTIME CELEBRATION
Tour the estate and marvel at Barnhardt’s team’s incredible decorations, then stop in at one of the estate’s restaurants for special, festive menus, or try the winery for holiday wine tastings. CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS EVENINGS
Experience Biltmore as you’ve never seen it before. The house glows with the flickering light of fire, roaring in its dozens of fireplaces and glowing softly in candleholders placed on priceless furniture and in the sagging branches of Christmas trees. Live music sets the tone for nighttime explorers. CAROLERS IN ANTLER HILL VILLAGE
Saturdays and Sundays through the holidays bring an extra element of celebration to Biltmore’s Antler Hill Village with chirpy carolers. Five 30-minute sets begin at 3 p.m. in the picturesque village. Best enjoyed with a fresh bottle of vino from the winery. VISIT SANTA IN ANTLER HILL VILLAGE
Saturdays and Sundays also bring another seasonal surprise to Antler Hill Village: everyone’s favorite red-cheeked figure, Santa! Bring the little ones to Antler Hill Village where they can meet the man in red from 1 to 5 p.m. every weekend. 30

“We love that our guests get to see
something a little different every year, and we still get to create the feel of an era.” ~ Cathy Barnhardt
Between salutations, Barnhardt delves deeper into the process of transforming Biltmore. The layers she referenced begin outside of Biltmore, in their storage space. “We like to say we’ve got the biggest attic,” she says with a signature chuckle. Salvageable artificial trees are brought out of storage, fluffed and set in dozens of the property’s rooms. Designers begin upstairs, decorating their favorite rooms in special themed decor. The designs of each year’s decorations have two driving factors. First, the theme of that year’s Christmas at Biltmore; this year’s theme, Hearth and Home, draws inspiration from the renowned hospitality of the Vanderbilt family. As one of America’s richest and most generous families, the Vanderbilts would host gatherings for friends and employees alike, especially during the holidays, and Hearth and Home is designed to capture the very essence of their kindnesses. The second factor of the decorations hail from other factors of the family’s history. Each room has a motif that ties into the overarching theme and a story from the Vanderbilt’s past. This year, for example, the breakfast room draws inspiration from Edith Vanderbilt’s Bohemian leanings; decked in bright fuchsias and glimmering beads, chromatic lamps and rich colors, the seasonal decor taps into Edith’s fun-loving ways while still maintaining a traditional holiday ambiance. Because of the house’s Gilded Age design and extensive history, designers are able to pull inspiration from multiple decades, including the sedate decor of its Victorian beginnings and the more florid, Bohemian flounce of later decades. The decorations throughout Biltmore hearken back to memories of the family that made this house home so long ago. In George’s room you’ll find two blue spruces in honor of one of those sweet familial memories. One of his woodworkers who lived on the property sent his twin sons into the woods around the estate to find a tree; when the boys stumbled upon the perfect, manicured form of a blue spruce, they proudly chopped the tree and carted it home. The father immediately recognized the tree not as a wild seedling but a cultivated piece of the Vanderbilts’ land. When he brought his two guilty sons before the master of the home, rather than offer reprimand or reproach, George merely laughed and instructed the young’uns to enjoy the tree. It’s the kindness and hospitality of the Vanderbilts, remembered through stories like this, that inspire Christmas at Biltmore and especially this year’s Hearth and Home. At the forefront of the Christmas at Biltmore celebration is that sense of welcoming hospitality—especially for the estate’s modern-day guests. “We love that our guests get to see something a little different every year,” Barnhardt explains, “and we still get to create the feel of an era.” Visitors can marvel at intricate, hand-decorated displays year after year and always experience a completely unique version of Christmas at Biltmore. And even beyond its visitors, Biltmore embodies that generosity through the community by donating lightly-worn decorations to the local Habitat for Humanity, sagging poinsettias to employees and nearby churches, and extraneous ribbons and artificial flowers to neighborhood nursing homes for use in craft projects. Though this year’s motif may be Hearth and Home, its equally applicable to Christmas at Biltmore as a whole. Here, the true meaning of the holidays—of giving and sharing, of sparkling beauty and kindness that sparkles just as brightly—finds life. December 2016 | Asheville Lifestyle

Though everyone knows the hot toddy, its definitions are as mercurial as the shifting patterns of the season’s snowflakes. The history of the traditional cocktail, for example, is obscure; most posit the hot toddy hails from Scotland, where cold and damp temperabut others contend the drink’s origins lie in

Britain and their trade with India, where a

drink of palm tree sap—a toddy—could have translated to a European adaptation. Though the derivations of the toddy are shrouded in postulations, the ingredients list of the cocktail is positively undefined, completely malleable to the drinkers preferences and mood—and that’s what makes it such a great cocktail. “The best part of the toddy is its adaptability,” says Ben Johnson, bar manager at the Imperial Life, Table’s hip craft cocktail complement (you’ll find it up the marbled stairs when you open the door). The only rules of the ephemeral toddy are that it must contain a liquor (Johnson notes that literally any spirit will work), a sweetener, like honey or sugar, a warm base (hot water or tea are popular), and usually a citrus (’tis the season, after all). “Try it with bourbon, lemon, and honey—but try it with rum, or with cognac. Experiment!” says Johnson. Johnson shares one of his favorite toddies with us: a smooth blend of sherry, cognac and fresh grapefruit with a splash of creamy creme de cacao that will warm even the frostiest fingertips.

n life, most of us are lead by our eyes. It’s sight that leads us forward, onto new adventures and innovations. In a fitting correlation, Asheville Eye Associates is leading the way in Asheville’s healthcare community. We don’t just mean that Asheville Eye provides high-quality healthcare and innovative eye care to residents of Western North Carolina—that’s a given for this avant-garde practice—they do so much more. Asheville Eye is also at the forefront of a healthcare system that’s integrally tied to the community. “Our mission is to be the premier provider to all the residents of Western North Carolina and surrounding areas,” says Denise Fridl, Chief Performance Officer at Asheville Eye Associates, “and community is a huge part of us contributing to the residents of Western N.C.” That contribution to community is beyond sizable; it’s the very heartbeat at the center of what defines Asheville Eye. Their biggest event every year is their annual fundraiser. In 2008, when breast cancer struck close to home, Asheville Eye Associates wanted to do more to give back and to support a cause that was so dear to their personal community. So they arranged a huge fundraiser, culminating with the three-day Susan G. Komen Walk. Their efforts raised an astounding $20,000. Since then, they’ve chosen a new charity to support every year in their annual fundraiser. Years past have focused on charities that spotlight health and wellness in the community, like the Low Vision Center and the Guide Dogs Foundation, raising $15,000 to $20,000 every year. This year’s charity supported by their fundraising is Iron Girls, which helps adolescent girls navigate the troublesome waters of youth through exercise and mentorship. Local schools incorporate the program as an elective and bring girls into the gym during the school day, where they perform fun workouts and engage in classes on relevant topics like peer pressure and media literacy. “Because we have so many women who work for us, we’ve gotten really involved this year!” says Fridl. So involved that before the end of October they had already raised upwards of $25,000.
The Asheville Eye Associates team is constantly involved in other charitable acts beyond their fundraiser, especially through organizations that help the visually impaired. For example, they sponsor MARRS, or the Mountain Area Radio Reading Service, every year. MARRS broadcasts readings of popular newspapers, magazines and articles for local visually impaired community members. Asheville Eye also sponsors hearing devices at the Asheville Community Theatre, Flat Rock Playhouse and Asheville Symphony so that visually impaired playgoers can enjoy the show with spoken narrative guidance that tells them the physical actions occurring on the stage before them. Asheville Eye Associates is truly Ashevillian in their environmental awareness. They are currently the only medical practice in Asheville with solar panels, just one more indicator of their innovativeness in the local medical field. Though the Asheville Eye Associates’ contribution to community is physically evident in figures and dollar signs, the true evidence of their compassion lies in their actions.

rom the anticipatory hum of a purr to the all-out, pedal-down roar, there’s something about a Jaguar that makes your heart beat a little faster. With a growling engine and feline sleekness, the new F-PACE, a medium luxury SUV, is all Jaguar. “We designed the all-new F-PACE to be, first and foremost, a Jaguar,” says Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar. But it’s so much more than the wee convertibles of the automobile maker’s past. “The F-PACE is an all-weather Jaguar sports car, life-proofed for five people and their belongings.” The first thing you’ll notice about the F-PACE is its strapping silhouette, the very lines of which exude untapped power. Muscular rear haunches and an angular rear window reveal a spacious trunk area, perfect for storing sports equipment and Sunday’s golf bag. You’ll find Jaguar’s signature in the single-sheet body, thanks to the brand’s expertise in aluminum. Everything about the vehicle’s exterior whispers of the inherent athleticism of the performance SUV. And that’s truly what the F-PACE is—a performance sports utility vehicle, designed to get you and your four passengers to the ends of the Earth and your next adventure. But who said adventures had to be messy or minimal? The luxurious, spacious interior brings Jaguar’s meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship to a modern world. Slip into the available leather sports seats and experience slick comfort with 14 different adjustments, heating and cooling. And with the 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster, every bell and whistle is at your fingertips. Remember what we said about this being a decisively modern Jaguar? Progress Control controls the throttle and brakes, so the driver can concentrate on—and truly enjoy—the fun of steering. The advanced stereo camera delivers Autonomous Emergency Braking and a pedestrian detection to initiate full braking automatically, plus Lane Departure Warnings and Lane Keep Assist to help drivers avoid collisions. Of course, the F-PACE also offers blind spot monitoring and parking assist, but our favorite feature might be the Intelligent Speed Limiter, which can automatically increase or decrease the vehicle’s max speed depending on the local speed limit. Those modern touches continue far beyond the actual driving experience. The Jaguar InControl Touch infotainment system is standard in the F-PACE, and it’s as intuitive and modern as these systems can get. The navigation system is leagues above the piddly version you’ll find on your phone with turn-by-turn instructions that can show on the head-up display right before your very eyes. Features like Commute Mode memorize your route to work and automatically offer alternative routes in the face of congestion or traffic. Don’t forget that this is an SUV. It’s been tested at locations around the world, from the most frigid tundras to the driest deserts, to ensure every tire grips the road and offers you the thrill of an exhilarating, but always safe, ride. Both the 3.01 340 hp or 380 hp supercharged gasoline V6 engines with 8-speed transmissions offer four-wheel power and torque to get you across every highway and dirt road out there with oomph. With a polished and almost surreptitious aesthetic and a ruggedness prepared to take you anywhere, the F-PACE is all class, all comfort, and all Jaguar.

How to Make a Ribbon Wreath ARTICLE CATHY BARNHARDT
T
his is a great way to repurpose ribbons from past Christmases, making an elegant decoration for your holiday celebration. Coordinate colors with your Christmas theme or with your home’s interior design to create a festive and stylish seasonal design. Have fun and be creative!
YOU WILL NEED: • A 14” straw or Styrofoam wreath form found at floral and craft stores • Around 12 yards each of 4 different but coordinating ribbons of varying widths and textures • A chenille stem to make the hanger, found at craft stores (looks like a pipe cleaner) • About 50 to 75 fern pins, found at floral and craft stores (looks like a long staple or hairpin) INSTRUCTIONS: First wrap the entire wreath form with a wider and simpler length of ribbon. Attach one end of the ribbon to the back of the form with two of the fern pins pushed at a slight angle through the ribbon and into the form to secure (Fig. 1). Then tightly spiral the ribbon, overlapping slightly, and continue to wrap the form to cover, attaching the end with two more of the fern pins, securing tightly (Fig. 2). Next, twist the chenille stem around the wreath to form a hanger (Fig. 3). Now, create several bows of various ribbons, with the loops being about the same size. Leave the tie ends as single “tails” and cut the loose ends into a swallow tail. You may also create single loops and tails to fill in between bows (Fig. 4). Pin the bows and loops and tails onto the covered wreath form with the fern pins, pushing the pins through the center point of the bow or end of the loop and tail (Fig. 5). Continue adding bows and loops and tails until all but the back surface of the wreath form is covered. The closer the bows, the fuller and fluffier the wreath will appear, but don’t crowd them so much that the wreath looks stiff and tight (Fig. 6). Be sure to hang your wreath indoors unless you have used weatherproof ribbons (Fig. 7).
