LIFESTYLE LETTER
Express Yourself!
September 2025 PUBLISHER
Dear Reader, Welcome to our Style Issue where we’re shining a light on the many ways people in our community express themselves through creativity, craftsmanship, and personal flair. Style shows up in a lot of ways—how we dress, how we design our homes, and even how we spend our time. It’s not just about looks; it’s about expressing who we are and what we value. The great thing about style is that it doesn’t need to follow any rules. It’s personal. It grows and shifts as we do. I love watching my children’s style change and grow along with them as I've seen them evolve from not caring, to having a sharp wit in what "looks good." Needless to say, I don't always agree. And that's part of the point! It’s how we put our stamp on the world, and when it’s done with intention, it has the power to make us feel confident in ourselves as individuals. In this issue, we’re showcasing style in a few of its boldest forms. From the craftsmanship of local businesses like Urban Exteriors and Arvada Flooring + Interiors, to the inspiring work of muralist Patrick Maxcy whose latest piece you’ve probably spotted on the side of Rheinlander Bakery in Olde Town. There’s no shortage of creative energy around here, we even feature a local style icon who shares the best fashion tips! One of the best parts of being in a community like Arvada is getting to see how style takes shape through the hands of hardworking people like our local entrepreneurs, artists, and neighbors who take pride in what they do and how they do it. As you flip through these pages, I hope you’ll feel that same appreciation. Maybe it’ll even spark a few ideas of your own! Here’s to living with intention and bringing your own kind of style to the table! All the best,

ART WITH HEART ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRICK MAXCY If you’ve strolled through Olde Town Arvada recently, chances are you’ve seen the bold, whimsical octopus mural splashed across the north side of Rheinlander Bakery. Created by muralist and gallery artist Patrick Maxcy, the vibrant piece blends ocean life with Colorado elements like monarch butterflies, forests, and western bluebirds—creatures you wouldn’t normally find side-by-side. “I love juxtaposing animals that wouldn’t normally coexist,” Maxcy says. “It creates a

visual story and makes people stop and ask questions.” The mural was commissioned after Maxcy won Arvada’s local mural festival last year. “I’d pitched ideas to Olde Town for years without much traction,” he recalls. “But when I won the festival, it opened the door to this larger opportunity.” Using only spray paint—aside from a few brush strokes on the background and butterflies—Maxcy completed the massive mural over the course of three days. “Spray paint is way faster, and it fits the scale of

murals like this,” he says. “I’ve been painting murals for years, but I picked up spray paint techniques more recently to expand what I could do on large walls.” For Maxcy, art is about more than aesthetics. “I want people, especially kids, to see something different and feel a sense of joy or curiosity,” he shares. That emotional connection even extends to the details: Maxcy hides small hearts in every piece as a nod to his family. “When I’m traveling for work, it’s my way of keeping them close,” he says. “There are at least two hidden hearts in this mural.” Bright, surprising, and heartfelt, Maxcy’s mural brings imagination to the streets and invites Arvada to look a little closer.

From everyday moments to lasting memories, so much of life happens at home with family and friends. When it comes to designing the interior of a home, it is important to create a space that not only meets the needs of each homeowner but also reflects their personality and style. Without a bit of expert advice, the choices and decisions can quickly become overwhelming, but the team at Arvada Flooring + Interiors uses their knowledge and training to make the process seamless and as stress free as possible. “We take great pride in our customer service and the fact that we take the time to train our staff so that they know what product will fit each individual's needs,” explains Liz Matovina, Business Manager and Accountant for Bear Claw Trading Company, the parent company of Arvada Flooring + Interiors. “If we don't know the answer, we find someone who does. We try to get our customers taken care of quickly and efficiently.” In Arvada Flooring + Interiors’ newly expanded showroom, customers can explore seemingly endless options to help design, build, or renovate indoor spaces. “We offer complete flooring, including carpet, hardwood, tile, laminate, and luxury vinyl plank,” says Liz. “Our showroom also features countertops, cabinets, plumbing fixtures, Norman blinds, and Benjamin Moore paint. Customers can buy directly or have us install any of those products.” The showroom includes a new Design Center for customers to work with an on-site designer, ensuring that any new products installed will be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. A full, working kitchen serves as a fun addition to the showroom and will be used for events and special treats for customers, including cookies each Wednesday from 3:00-5:00pm. The larger space also allows for collaboration with other businesses within the community. “We are excited to partner with several local businesses, Arvada Appliances and Arvada Vacuum, who are providing products to display in the showroom,” shares Liz. “We've also partnered with Mountain Hearth and Patio to install a fireplace in our new showroom.” Currently, Liz is seeing trends that focus on colors moving away from gray and beige and towards the use of earth tones. However, she stresses that a homeowner’s preferences and personal style usually take precedence over trends. “There are many things to consider when you're remodeling a kitchen or a bathroom in your home,” she says. “The modern trends may not fit your lifestyle, so you need to be comfortable and remember that it's a personal statement of who you are.”
20
H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN
During her time in the industry, Liz has experienced the evolution of products as manufacturers continue to meet the changing needs of the population. One is the continued integration of technology in appliances and the use of artificial intelligence. Other big changes relate to the durability of flooring in different situations and there are a few products Liz thinks are a solid choice for many Arvada residents. “In the flooring world, people like the look of wood and there are a couple options that they can use. They can do solid wood, engineered wood, or luxury vinyl plank, which looks like wood, but it's not wood,” she explains. “In Colorado, we highly recommend the luxury vinyl plank over the other two because of humidity, or the lack
thereof, in Colorado. Not having a stabilized humidity in your environment can cause your floor not to perform well if it's solid or engineered.” Another innovation for pet owners is the Shaw Pet Perfect line, which includes technology that allows pet hair to release from the carpet, making vacuuming easier, and has a protective layer between the fiber and the pad which protects the pad and subfloor from accidents. Expert insights on product technologies and trends are just one part of what makes Arvada Flooring + Interiors the best kept secret in Arvada. Stop by and see what is available in the newly expanded showroom at 11651 W 64th Avenue. For more information, visit thearvadaflooringcompany.com or call 303-424-7333.

The Color of Confidence
ERICA MILLARD’S APPROACH TO PERSONAL STYLE ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL AUDETTE - THE TURQUOISE CAMERA
24
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y
When Erica Millard talks about personal style, it’s not just about the clothes. It’s about confidence, identity, and the joy that comes from seeing yourself in the mirror. Erica is the owner of House of Colour – Golden, a franchise that helps people discover the colors and silhouettes that make them feel like the best version of themselves. “We use 140 precision-dyed drapes to determine your ideal color palette,” she explains. “It’s all about harmonizing with your skin tone. When you’re in the right colors, you can look and feel your very best.” Each client is categorized into one of four color "seasons"— spring, summer, autumn, or winter—based on their natural coloring, undertones, and contrast levels. “Each season has 36 colors that work beautifully together,” she adds. “Once you know your season, shopping becomes easier, your wardrobe becomes more cohesive, and you start to feel more confident in every outfit.” In addition to color analysis, Erica offers a personal style service rooted in body geometry and lifestyle. “We take your proportions and personality into account. What do you want to say when
you walk into a room? How do you want to feel in your clothes?” she says. “It’s not about hiding or minimizing your shape—it’s about achieving balance and celebrating what’s already there.” Before launching her styling business, Erica spent years as a literature professor teaching online. “After COVID, I was burned out on the screen,” she shares. “I was turning 40 and craving something new. I found House of Colour, got my own analysis done, and thought—this is it. This is what I want to do.” For many of her clients, the process is a revelation. “We spend hours together in the studio,” Erica says. “There’s time to really understand who someone is and how they want to present themselves. It’s a journey, not a prescription. My job is to guide, not dictate.” One of the most empowering parts? Letting go of trends that don’t serve you. “People come in thinking something’s wrong with them if clothes don’t fit right. But it’s not your body’s fault—it’s the clothes. When you find your colors and styles, shopping gets so much easier and enjoyable,” she says. “You stop chasing the ‘universal flattering’ myths and start honoring what works for you.” CONTINUED >

Erica encourages clients to take it slow. “You don’t need to throw out your whole closet,” she laughs. “But when you do shop, look for pieces that are an 8, 9, or 10 out of 10. If you don’t want to do a happy dance in the dressing room, it’s not the right piece.” Above all, Erica believes in making fashion fun again. “This work isn’t about perfection,” she says. “It’s about discovering what lights you up—and giving yourself permission to show up that way every day.”

Experts on Exterior Style Jennifer Hess of Urban Exteriors shares trends, game-changing products, and what makes a big impact
Founded by John and Jennifer Hess in 2013, Urban Exteriors provides high quality materials and services to keep the exterior of homes and businesses looking and functioning great. Their team specializes in roofing, siding, gutters, concrete, and more for both residential and commercial customers.

An industry expert, Jennifer is the perfect person to share an update on the trends she is currently seeing, products that are making a big difference for homeowners, and tips on ways to make a big impact on the exterior of a home.
ROOFING:
“Black roofs are always popular because black can be paired with basically every house color. They are sleek, modern, and very versatile. People get nervous sometimes that with a black roof their electric bill will be higher in the summer, but the heat bill in the winter is lower. So here in Colorado, it evens itself out.” “There is still a draw for CeDUR roofs and concrete tile roofs, but a lot of people are going with Class 4, impact-resistant asphalt roofing shingles. It is one of those game-changers in the industry because they aren't easily damaged in hailstorms.
Customers also like standing seam metal accent roofs on their homes.”
SIDING:
“James Hardie siding is very popular. It's a fiber cement board that has a wood look, but it is versatile. It is durable, long lasting, low maintenance, and hail resistant. There are a lot of different, cool things that can be done with it that you don’t see with typical vinyl siding, like being placed vertically on a home. We also specialize in custom flashing to go with it that matches the color so that it's not just galvanized metal.”
DECKS:
“Customers love composite decking because you don't have to stain it every couple of years, and it requires less maintenance in general. There is also CONTINUED >

a product that can be installed under the decking that keeps the patio dry below called Trex RainEscape which is very popular.”
MAKING A BIG IMPACT:
“Painting your house gives the biggest bang for your buck every time. Depending on the budget, you can change out siding or add an accent wall or scalloped
edging. Changing the house color or the color of the gutters and front door also makes a big impact.” Beyond current trends, the team at Urban Exteriors works to find the best product to meet each customer’s needs and budget.
