Where Memories Are Made

Home. Just four letters, yet it holds so much meaning. It’s our sanctuary, our foundation, and the place where life unfolds. Home is where we begin and end each day, where our lives take shape, and where our hearts find rest. While the specifics of what “home” looks like vary for each of us, its significance is universal.

Author Wendy Wunder captured it perfectly: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” With that in mind, this month’s issue focuses on what makes home special—from the warmth of shared meals and thoughtfully designed spaces to the people who bring it all to life.

Some of my favorite memories happen in the simplest moments at home — messy breakfasts, late-night conversations and laughs in the kitchen, and the comfort of knowing the people you love most are just down the hall.

This month, I had the privilege of connecting with local businesses and individuals who shape this community. Their stories highlight the creativity, resilience, and heart that make this area feel like home. We hope that as you turn these pages, you’ll be inspired to strengthen your connections—whether within your neighborhood, your city, or your own walls.

Many of our readers tell us they hold onto this magazine long after the month on its cover, treasuring it as a piece of home—whether as coffee table art or a source of inspiration. That’s a tradition we’re proud to uphold, and we remain committed to delivering the value you expect each month.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes. Here’s to making this March a celebration of the spaces and people that matter most.

Happy March!

Welcome Mirka Penn!

Arvada Lifestyle’s new Publisher brings fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose

As the new publisher of Arvada Lifestyle, Mirka Penn brings fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose to the magazine. “What excites me most is the opportunity to truly help people — to support local businesses, highlight meaningful stories, and build something that brings value to the community,” shares Mirka. “On a personal level, it’s incredibly fulfilling to do work that aligns with my values and to build something my family can feel proud of.”

Born and raised in Slovakia, Mirka has resided in the US for more than two decades, ten of those living in Colorado. “From the beginning, Colorado felt like home to me,” she says. “The changing seasons, the mountains, and the outdoor lifestyle reminded me so much of where I grew up. I love skiing and exploring nature, and the mountains have always been my sanctuary.”

Upon moving to Colorado, Mirka learned that the state has more mountains that peak at over 14,000 feet than any other state. This ignited a spark of challenge for Mirka, and she set out to achieve a lofty goal. “I remember telling my friend, a Coloradan, that I wanted to climb eight of them in one summer. He thought that was too ambitious,” Mirka explains. “I never said it out loud, but I decided to do it anyway. That summer, I climbed eight 14ers — some of them entirely

on my own. I started early in the mornings, carefully researched routes and weather, and followed through. That experience truly describes who I am: when I’m presented with a challenge and believe it’s achievable, I fully commit and see it through.”

For Mirka, family is the epicenter of her life. She and her husband, Ryan, have three daughters and they enjoy spending time together.

“Alongside our family life, my husband and I share many passions, from traveling and skiing to taking on home projects together,” she says. “We love building, renovating, and designing homes, and creating things side by side. We are truly best friends—able to share anything with one another—and that partnership is at the heart of everything we do.”

From the moment Mirka joined the Arvada community, she understood why so many people love to call this area home. “I’m meeting incredible people and families every day — people with big hearts who truly care about giving back and supporting one another — and I’m honored to become part of this community,” says Mirka. “It’s clear that people truly enjoy living in Arvada and feel connected to it in a meaningful way. That sense of belonging and loyalty reminds me very much of Slovakia and the way communities are rooted there.”

It is that deep sense of connection and community that Mirka believes is at the heart of Arvada Lifestyle. “For me, community involvement means supporting local businesses not only through storytelling, but through action, by choosing local vendors, venues, and partners whenever possible, as well as bringing people together with events, supporting local businesses, and sharing uplifting stories,” shares Mirka. “My hope is to create something thoughtful, inspiring, and meaningful — a publication that reflects the heart of this community. I can’t wait to meet our readers, hear their stories, and continue growing alongside them. I’m honored and humbled that this role came into my life and to be part of this community.”

As you see Mirka and get to know her better, say hello and let her know what you love most about Arvada and your favorite parts of reading Arvada Lifestyle each month!

Proudly serving Arvada and surrounding Denver Metro communities, the company is guided by its core philosophy: Envision. Create. Sustain.

Envision begins with understanding how clients truly want to live outdoors. That vision may be a peaceful backyard retreat for quiet mornings, a welcoming space for family gatherings that stretch into warm summer evenings, or an active landscape where children climb hand-selected boulders and play on vibrant green turf. It could be the vision to swim in a private family pool or explore in their handcrafted custom water feature. Sometimes, it’s simply the joy of stepping outside and knowing everything is beautifully cared for with their full-service maintenance package. Outdoor Lifestyles helps clients define and refine that vision, making the process clear, collaborative, and stress-free.

Create is where professional expertise meets craftsmanship. Certified teams deliver the fit, finish, and attention to detail expected of premier landscape professionals, while preserving the personal service that keeps clients coming

back year after year. “We take great pride in knowing that we have many clients we have served for over 25 years,” the team shares.

Sustain focuses on ensuring each landscape continues to thrive long after installation. With engineering-driven planning, proper soil preparation, and climate-conscious plant selection, Outdoor Lifestyles builds for longevity and efficiency. Accredited designers and certified technicians install irrigation systems that reduce water use and long-term costs, while nursery experts carefully hand-select plants suited to Colorado’s ever-changing conditions. Every element is thoughtfully chosen to protect the investment and enhance the property over time.

As longtime Arvada residents, the Outdoor Lifestyles team understands the importance of giving back, staying connected to the community they serve, and supporting local nonprofits while caring for their clients. They also understand Front Range weather and the need for landscapes that feel natural, functional, and enduring. Clients often describe the experience as collaborative, thoughtful, and refreshingly personal, resulting in outdoor spaces they’re proud to share with loved ones and truly enjoy every day.

"Outdoor Lifestyles doesn’t just build landscapes; we create outdoor environments rooted in Colorado, designed for living, and built to last for generations."

MID-CENTURY WARMTH, REIMAGINED

There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.

Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.

“Tackling each space and room as its own story and concept is how to make a new space feel personal,” Manz explains. “But bringing it all together cohesively is always the challenge.”

Her solution? Warmth, intention, and a strong belief in the power of people. In new builds it can take years for a home to shed its newness. For this project, the goal was to fast-track that sense of belonging by layering in pieces with history and heart. Vintage market finds, local artists, and meaningful objects play a starring role throughout the home.

“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”

That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN JENKINS, AMANDA PROUDFIT

ENTRYWAY: A WARM WELCOME

The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.

Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.

MATERIALS:

Santa and Cole Tekió Light, Vintage Rainer Draumiller Chairs, American Leather custom couch in Bison Butterscotch, Flos Bellhop lamp, BZippy Vase, Plush Moroccan rug

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

In large rooms, architectural details like niches, built-ins, or material changes can create visual rhythm while giving meaningful objects a true home.

THE OPEN CONCEPT, REIMAGINED

The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.

“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”

A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.

MATERIALS:

Luca split stone pavers, Vintage Turkish rug, Plants, Virginia Sin Wall hook

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

An entryway doesn’t need to be loud to be memorable. Combine tactile materials with one or two meaningful elements to create an instant emotional connection.

POWDER BATH: SMALL ROOM, BOLD SPIRIT

If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.

MATERIALS:

Particular Tile in Satin Terracotta and Vanilla Bean, Arté Wallcovering Shards in Brick Red, Red travertine sink, Rachel Donath chunky mirror, Playful art work by Olivia Fields

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

Small spaces are ideal for experimentation. Mix patterns, finishes, and textures within a tight color family to create depth without overwhelm.

LOUNGE: A STUDY IN CALM AND DEPTH

Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings. Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.

MATERIALS:

Virginia Sin pendant light, In Common With sconce, Arté Oblong wall covering in Ochre, Particular Tile in Vapor, Custom sage velvet sofa, Plush Vintage Moroccan rug

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

When a room serves many purposes, let texture and tone create cohesion. A restrained palette with varied finishes keeps the space flexible and serene.

At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.

Magic of the A-Frame

Where architecture, nature and retreat align

Since I was a boy, I have always been fascinated by A-Frame cabins. Growing up in Oregon, we spent a lot of time exploring the towering old-growth forests around the base of Mt. Hood. The architecture of the A-Frame fits this landscape perfectly, rising among the 100-foot-tall spruce trees along the Zig-Zag River. Something about their sharp silhouette against the forest canopy lit my imagination. Ever since, my dream has been to build an A-Frame cabin nestled near a creek in the high Alpine forests of Colorado.

A-Frames are easy to spot. Their steep, triangle-shaped roofs grow from the ground like a tall spike. They were introduced by Austrian-born architect Rudolph Schindler, who in 1934 built the first A-Frame in Lake Arrowhead, California. The triangular structure lends itself naturally to remote locations, shedding snow easily and standing strong against mountain weather. Today, A-Frames can be found all over the US, especially near mountains and lakes, where their form feels most at home.

Originally designed as second homes, A-Frames have become extremely popular for short-term rentals.

Their appeal lies in the balance between vintage nostalgia and cozy mountain charm. Most A-Frames aren’t big, typically offering 1-2 bedrooms and a single bath. The steep roof pitch creates a volume of interior space not found in traditional log cabins, often with lofted sleeping.

A-frames are well-suited for a dramatic wall of glass, pulling the outdoors inside and framing views of trees, snow, or starlit skies. The true magic of the A-Frame lies in its cozy, comforting interior— crackling wood-burning fireplaces, warm wall paneling, and hardwood floors that invite you to slow down.

A weekend spent in an A-Frame is ideal for outdoor exploration, quiet rest, and reconnecting with loved ones over a board game and a well-made cocktail. A-frames are the perfect weekend escape — you can experience the magic of the A-Frame just a short drive from Arvada in Winter Park, Colorado.

CHOCOLATE and WINE

The Key to a Successful Wine and Chocolate Pairing Lies in Finding the Right Combination of Flavors and Characteristics.

Pairing wine and chocolate together can be a delightful sensory experience that can elevate the flavors of both. While the concept of pairing wine with food is well-known, pairing it with chocolate may seem unconventional at first. However, when done correctly, it can create a harmonious balance where the flavors of the wine and chocolate complement and enhance one another.

Wine and chocolate have a lot of similarities to each other. Both contain flavanols (antioxidants) and polyphenols (compounds found in plant-based food) that are good for you and have anti-inflammatory properties. These characteristics affect flavor so it’s somewhat challenging to pair wine and chocolate together. The more polyphenols, the more pronounced the bitter taste.

For example, if you sip a delicious dry red wine alongside a hunk of dark chocolate, the wine will start to taste bitter and sour. The taste imbalance is coming from the heightened levels of flavanols (different types of tannin) found in both chocolate and wine that end up clashing against each other on your tongue.

While it might sound counterintuitive, a good rule of thumb is to pair a wine that is “sweeter” than the chocolate itself. “Sweet” doesn’t refer to dessert wines alone. In the wine world, the term “sweet” is often used to denote ripe, fruit-forward flavors in a wine. These characteristics provide a nice balance to the bitter flavors of cocoa.

Both wine and chocolate can have intense, dry flavors. In order to find the right balance, it’s best to choose wines that are a little bit softer and juicier than the chocolate you’re pairing it with.

We’ve done the footwork to find several wines that partner well with chocolate. Here are our guidelines for matching chocolate with wine and a few of our favorite wine and chocolate pairings. We hope you’ll try them and then get inspired to experiment and create your own.

TIP 1: MATCH SUGAR WITH SUGAR

When it comes to pairing chocolate and wine, you don’t want to strike a balance, you want to match sugar to sugar. Sweeter chocolate like white chocolate does better when consumed with sweeter wines and bitter chocolate like dark chocolate enjoys being paired with dryer wines. Think of it as matching sugar with sugar. A good rule of thumb is to always pair wines that are equally or slightly more sweet than the chocolate being eaten with it.

TIP 2: MATCH INTENSITY WITH INTENSITY

If you pair an incredibly delicately flavored dark chocolate with a full-bodied, heavy red, the intensity of the wine will destroy any of the subtlety that might have been present in the chocolate. The opposite is also true: strong-tasting chocolate will blow a delicate wine out of the water. Keep this rule of thumb in mind: light-flavored chocolates enjoy being paired with light-bodied wines and intensely flavored chocolates prefer being paired with full-bodied wines.

TIP 3: PAIR FLAVORS WITH FLAVORS

Wine and chocolate both carry their own intense flavors. If the chocolate contains other ingredients such as nuts, fruit, or caramel, consider how these flavors will play with the wine. This is especially helpful to remember when enjoying truffles with wine. To avoid creating a palate power play between the two, do your best to match fruity or floral chocolates with fruity wines like Moscato or White Zinfandel. Enjoy chocolate-covered nuts alongside a nutty wine like a Madeira or Marsala. Chocolate studded with dried cranberries might pair well with a fruit-forward red with berry undertones.

CREATING THE PERFECT PAIR

DARK CHOCOLATE

Bitter to semi-sweet dark chocolates, that are 50 to 100% cacao, have intense, bitter flavors, and earthy to fruity undertones. Match the intensity without adding more dryness by pairing these chocolates with full-bodied, yet fruit-forward wines.

Pairs well with:

Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Port, Merlot, Shiraz, Barolo

MILK CHOCOLATE

Milk chocolate is typically creamier and sweeter with flavors of brown sugar, vanilla, and cream. It requires a wine that is light to medium in body, with a ripe fruit character.

Pairs well with:

Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sweet Riesling, Ice-Style Wine

WHITE CHOCOLATE

White chocolate has a sweet, buttery flavor with notes of cream and honey. Sweet white and rosè wines help cleanse the palate of the rich flavors from white chocolate, as does sparkling spumante like Moscato d’Asti.

Pairs well with:

Sweet Riesling, Moscato, Semi-Dry Sparkling Whites, Gewurztraminer
