LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!!! Ah, welcome to the start of a new year! It’s an exciting time of renewal. A time to set new goals, embrace fresh opportunities, and dream about the year ahead. While looking ahead is exciting, I enjoy taking a pause to be grateful for all that has come, including this magazine and the meaningful connections it has created. This will be my last issue as publisher, and although the future has different paths for us it gives me a sense of pride in Arvada and an entire team of people I didn’t know a year ago to root for. How cool is that! To our partners who inspire not only me but our entire community, thank you for sharing your gifts and doing what you do best. I will always be cheering you on, wishing you the greatest success. And to our Arvada community, keep showing up for yourself, your family, and your loved ones. May 2026 be a year we continue to thrive and lift each other up. What a wonderful place to be! January is always an inspiring month, and we wanted this issue to be just that! From Lori Abbey’s insights on personal growth to Kenton Good’s powerful and holistic work with TaeKwon-Do at Radiant Martial Arts & Fitness, this issue was created with the goal of offering inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. On that note, we’ve also included tips from Nicole at Hydrate IV Bar to stay healthy this winter so you can feel your best while pursuing your dreams. As a father, I want to teach my children the value of chasing their goals, embracing new experiences (even if it ends with a different outcome than anticipated), and finding joy in the journey. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up and putting one foot in front of the other each day. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you! May this be your best year yet,

Lori Abbey shares insights on maintaining balance and advancing personal growth and goals

Lori says, “I believe it is hard to have a strong mind if you do not also have a strong body"

To take the best care of her clients, Lori Abbey of The Abbey Collection Real Estate Group understands that first, she must focus on her own well-being. Lori makes it a priority to constantly grow personally and professionally as well as ensure she stays active and attentive to her overall wellbeing. “Having a healthy balance is something that is very important to me and is something I’ve spent my entire life focused on,” says Lori. “I believe it is hard to have a strong mind if you do not also have a strong body; they really go hand in hand. I've noticed that when I'm feeling down or overwhelmed, if I go out, walk in nature, and move my body, it restarts my energy.” For Lori, self-care begins with a morning routine that is refreshing and sustainable. “Every morning, I do what I call pup cups and podcasts. No matter how cold or warm it is, I put the old senior dogs in the back of the car, let their heads hang out the window, and I go through Starbucks and get a pup cup for them,” shares Lori. “I pick a podcast, drive through neighborhoods, look at the mountains and trees, and let the dogs breathe in the fresh air. I start my day on a high note every single morning where I have learned something new and gotten the dogs some fresh air.” CONTINUED >

“I think setting goals and writing them down is incredibly important. If you write down your goals, you are much more likely to achieve them.” Later in the day, Lori’s go-to activity for being physically active and having mental renewal is getting outside and taking walks. “To me, part of the balance of being the person that I want to be is making sure that I'm giving back in different ways. I have rescued all my dogs, so getting outside is a beautiful lifestyle for them too,” she says. “I enjoy exploring all the different parts of Arvada like Patch Ridge Park, Majestic View Park, and the beautiful hiking trail next to Layden Rock. I also frequent local dog parks, especially West Arvada Dog Park, which I absolutely love because you're sitting right at the base of the foothills, get to look at the mountains, and sometimes watch the sunset and see the changing leaves.” One of the things Lori has recently started are sessions at Northwest Arvada Fit Body Boot Camp. Having an indoor, climate-controlled option for a workout means that on days when the weather is too harsh to get outside, she always has a place to get in a great workout. “It's a 30-minute class that is

14

M UST SE E | WEL L NESS

offered early in the morning and later in the afternoon, so you can either start or end your day on a great note,” says Lori. “In 30 minutes, they do a full-body workout and you're meeting neighbors in the area, so I love that it is both social and for getting your body moving.” Lori values having clear goals and maintaining steady focus on what she is working toward. Each year, she sets goals, revisits her mission and purpose, and creates a vision board. “I think setting goals and writing them down is incredibly important. If you write down your goals, you are much more likely to achieve them,” says Lori. “In addition to writing down your goals, it is important to write out your mission, vision, and values - both professionally and personally. There are so many decisions to make in a day that it's almost decision fatigue. If you are aligned with who you are and what you want from your life, however, it becomes easier to decide what things go on the calendar and what things to say no to.”

Lori says a key part of her day is getting outside for fresh air with her dogs.

In Lori’s experience, having personal and professional mission statements that align fuels motivation for progress. “If my mission is to both sell real estate and then use some of the money from that real estate to make the world a better place by saving dogs and serving underserved communities, then I'm more excited about doing real estate because I have a purpose. As I'm helping a client do something that is important to them, I'm also making the money that can serve my mission in life.” To support her goals and mission, Lori prioritizes finding opportunities for personal and professional development. “I read a ton of books, love to attend workshops, and always try to stay at the top of my game, both mentally and in my field,” Lori explains. “I really enjoy going to retreats, but there are so many different things that you can do. If you have an interest in something, Google it or ask ChatGPT to help you find a class online. There are so many free options on YouTube or with podcasts.” Lori also hosts retreats, teaches self-development workshops, and is in the process of writing a book, The 7 A's: From Chaos to Calm, to share the techniques she has learned to keep life well-balanced. Explore the holistic benef its of TaeKwon-Do with Kenton Good of Radiant Martial Arts & Fitness ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL AUDETTE

From a young age, Kenton Good developed a deep fascination with martial arts. As he encountered martial arts in various forms, the more his curiosity grew. One way was through video games. “In various arcades, there would be fighting games with characters and the movements of the characters,

“Having something that you can do to connect your mind and your body is great for people even into their later years, because it helps keep their mind sharp and their body healthy.” in particular the ways that they could kick and use their legs, was always really interesting to me,” shares Kenton. “The characters also had biographies that would play on the side saying this guy does Karate or Muay Thai or TaeKwon-Do, and it made me want to learn more.” Kenton began exploring different kinds of martial arts and found that TaeKwon-Do piqued his interest the most. Over the past three decades, Kenton’s early fascination grew into a lifelong pursuit. He continues to train in TaeKwon-Do and has devoted many years to teaching others. Through the years, he has experienced many different benefits of TaeKwon-Do. “I love how it connects you to your whole self. Clearly, it is a physical activity, and you learn about your muscles and your balance, but you also learn a mental focus about controlling your movement and

making it just right,” he says. “Beyond that, you learn about how you work emotionally when you're faced with a new challenge or situation.” It is his love for the holistic nature of TaeKwon-Do and the desire to share the art with others that motivated Kenton to partner with Brian Brown to open Radiant Martial Arts & Fitness. “Our mission is that we want to build good people,” explains Kenton. “TaeKwon-Do has tenets, or character traits, that we value including courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable spirit. We want our students to be able to demonstrate these tenets and show that every person deserves respect and dignity. These are things that we practice in class and are lessons that extend outward into life.” The newly opened studio offers traditional onehour TaeKwon-Do classes with an emphasis on CONTINUED >

personal instruction from experienced trainers. “We want to help our students set goals and achieve those goals. We will work with them wherever they are at and help them make small steps towards these successes,” says Kenton. “With TaeKwon-Do, there is always a new challenge, always another step you can make. So we have a path forward and something that you can say at the end of the day that you did and succeeded.” Training in TaeKwon-Do teaches kids how to control their body and exercise while they are focusing on a task. Adults find martial arts beneficial as a cardio workout, a way to learn and improve balance, and as an avenue to maintain the energy to move their body while keeping the mind fresh. For all ages, the benefits of TaeKwon-Do reach beyond the physical and mental aspects into the social sphere as well. “It is important to remember that we are social creatures, so being with people is important to our mental health. I love how training connects you with other people. The friends that you make in TaeKwon-Do and the camaraderie of training together are great,” says Kenton. “In this world with so many screens and an increasing feeling of isolation, especially among adults, studies show benefits to someone’s overall wellness when having a moderate level of intense training where you are making physical contact with another person such as with martial arts.” Radiant Martial Arts & Fitness cultivates an exciting atmosphere perfect for the whole family to come and participate in together. Classes are most appropriate for students who can focus for the hour-long classes, which in Kenton’s experience usually begins when kids are seven to eight years old. He has also trained with people well into their 80s and explains that there is no upper age limit for participants. “TaeKwon-Do and martial arts are such wholebody experiences,” he says. “Having something that you can do to connect your mind and your body is great for people even into their later years, because it helps keep their mind sharp and their body healthy.”

Being locally owned allows Kenton and Brian to work closely with students to match them with the right classes and make adjustments when needed. “We want classes to be flexible in order to accommodate your schedule. Our goal is to be able to work with you to get a class that suits you,” Kenton explains. “We are also excited to offer personal instruction from someone who has extensive experience and who is going

to care about your progress, care about you as a person, and help you accomplish your goals.” For more information on classes and opportunities through Radiant Martial Arts & Fitness, located at 8127 W. 94th Avenue in Westminster, visit www.radiantmaf.com, call 303-392-5370, or email radiantmaf@gmail.com. Kicking the Seasonal Slump

Nicole Poel’s Approach to Hydration and Health ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HYDRATE IV BAR

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Owners, Nicole and Kevin Poel

As winter settles here into Colorado, many people start to feel that familiar seasonal slump. Fatigue creeps in, headaches arrive out of nowhere, and energy dips just as the holiday pace accelerates. For Nicole Poel, nurse-turned-owner of Hydrate IV Bar, none of this is surprising. “Hydration is one of the biggest struggles people face this time of year,” she says. “Living at altitude in Colorado, we’re already playing catch-up. Add in the holidays... salty food, alcohol, travel, and our bodies just can’t keep up.” Nicole spent years working in the emergency room before opening Hydrate IV Bar with her husband, Kevin, a pharmacist. That medical foundation shapes everything she does now. “In the ER, almost everyone who walked through the door got a bag of fluids,” she explains. “Trauma, GI illness, pneumonia—it didn’t matter. Hydration helped people perk up, stabilize, and recover. Now I get to offer that same support on the proactive side of healthcare instead of the reactive side.” At Hydrate IV Bar’s warm, spa-like location, hydration isn’t just an afterthought, it’s a foundation for everyday wellness. As Nicole puts it, “Dehydration causes fatigue, headaches, low energy. People walk around thinking being tired all the time is normal, like it’s just a part of adulthood. It’s not. We’re not supposed to feel exhausted every day.” The coldest months are often when wellness routines start to wobble, which is why Nicole recommends a simple, sustainable approach. “If you can come in once a month for an IV, it helps keep your hydration and vitamin levels steady,” she says. “When you do it regularly, you start to feel the benefits long-term. Sleep improves, your immunity strengthens, you feel more energized.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / A RVA DA

25

Hydrate IV Bar offers a wide range of IV “cocktails,” each designed to support different wellness needs throughout the year. Among their most popular options is the Immunity IV, a winter staple infused with a double dose of vitamin C, zinc, and magnesium. This is ideal for anyone beginning to feel run down during the cold and flu season. For those training through the off-season, the Athletic Performance IV provides targeted support to enhance recovery and stamina. The Myers Cocktail blends eight essential vitamins and nutrients that help boost energy, improve sleep, and strengthen overall wellness. The Jet Lag IV is great for those traveling to warmer locations over the winter months. And for newcomers, the Recovery IV is a discounted introductory option frequently chosen by guests recovering from a GI illness or bouncing back from holiday indulgence. These are just a few examples of the many specialized IVs Hydrate IV Bar offers to meet clients where they are and help them feel their best, especially during the demanding winter months. “When you start to feel that tickle in your throat... the one where you think, ‘Oh no, I’m going down,' that’s the

26

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

exact moment to come in,” Nicole says. “If people can get an IV within that first 24 hours, they can often turn it around completely.” She’s seen it firsthand with her own family. “My four kids bring home every germ imaginable,” she laughs. “The second I feel that ache or scratchy throat, I’ll do an IV. Every time I’ve been able to catch it early, I either don’t get sick, or I get far less sick than I would have.” Nicole’s medical background also shapes how she talks to clients about supplements. “Oral vitamins aren’t regulated by the FDA, and they’re only about 30–50% bioavailable because they go through your digestive tract,” she explains. “With injections or IVs, the vitamins are 100% bioavailable. Your body gets exactly what’s listed.” For clients who are hesitant about needles or have tricky veins, Nicole reassures them. “We offer vitamin injections too. They do everything the IVs do, you just don’t get the hydration piece. A quick shot takes under a minute.” Her team uses vitamins sourced from 503B pharmacies regulated by the FDA. “There are a lot of eyes on the injectable products we use,” Nicole says. “Safety is a non-negotiable for us. Our tagline is ‘wellness from within,’ and we take that seriously.” To learn more about what Nicole and her team offer at Hydrate IV Bar, visit their website hydrateivbar.com.

ARTICLE BY APRIL SCHULTE-BARCLAY

Values Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment,

28

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Health

and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

Healthy, easy, and ready in minutes

Whether it’s a Green Smoothie or Green Juice, it’s my favorite way to get my fruits and veggies on the go!

EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE

Is there anything better than starting your day with a delicious, healthy, and energizing smoothie that is easy to make? I know mornings are busy, especially with kiddos, so I simplified my favorite green smoothie into a quick and easy recipe for you! Kickstart your morning with this Green Energy Smoothie packed with nutrients to give you natural energy to get through your day. Whether you need a breakfast boost, quick pre-workout fuel, or a refreshing snack- it’s the pick-me up you need. Smoothies are good on the go or as an after-school snack for kids to get their greens and ditch the candy. Smoothies are a great way to incorporate fruit and vegetables for those picky eaters and are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and hydration while giving a quick and tasty nutrient boost. While other fruit smoothies are delicious and nutritious, I love the Green Energy Smoothie because it is an easy way to sneak in those hard-to-get greens. Packed with spinach and nutrient-rich fruits, it gives you a boost of vitamins, minerals, and fiber in every sip. Even if you’re not a salad person, this smoothie makes it easy (and delicious) to get your greens. Working on hitting protein goals? Add your favorite protein powder to your smoothie. Just blend, sip, and enjoy. Your body (and taste buds) will thank you!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Add all ingredients to a blender 2. Blend until smooth and creamy 3. Pour into a glass & enjoy Power-Up Tips: • Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder for more fuel • Add avocado or flax seeds for more healthy fats • Add kale for extra greens • Add a handful of oats for extra fiber • Add fresh ginger or a juice from a lemon to enhance flavors • Swap coconut water for almond milk for fewer calories and more hydration Pro-Tips: • Prep your smoothies ahead of time. Add all ingredients to separate Ziploc bags for the week, freeze, and pull a bag out each day to blend.

GREEN ENERGY SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of your choice) • 1 handful fresh spinach • 1 small frozen banana • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple or mango • 1 tablespoon chia seeds • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
