The Gentlemen's Issue

Dear Dad,

Thank you for always being there for me. I’m so grateful for everything you have done for me. Whether noticed or seemingly unnoticed, it’s always been appreciated.

From jamming to Tom Petty, Pink Floyd or Uncle Kracker in the truck to the super early breakfast dates now, I want to reiterate my appreciation for everything then and in-between. You have always been there for the sports games, never missing one and even coaching me through some. That was the coolest thing to me. You took time to play catch, taught me how to tackle, how to pass a soccer ball and no matter how many times I said, “One more,” you always rebounded the basketball. What really put a cherry on top for me was the raw, undivided attention and dedication to helping me. That’s what made it so very memorable.

You were always the late night pick up driver for every reason, from sports games, late skates, coming home from a friend’s house, or even mom’s if I was ready to leave. You were always a consistent and reliable go to for me.

More recently, having you as a passenger when I drove on family trips was so appreciated. I love our time just sitting around the fire or having you teach me how to build things with my hands. In some of my fondest memories we were working on cars—sometimes with things going as planned and sometimes dealing with really frustrating and difficult cars! Rust flying all around, using larger than needed tools—all of those automotive frustrations created an unbreakable bond.

I could go on and on, but despite being 1,107 miles away from you, you are one of my best friends, a mentor, a teacher, and my dad. From the bottom of my heart, I am thankful for everything you have taught me, given me, and done for me. I am grateful for your never-ending efforts.

For the rest of the dads and father figures reading this, we appreciate the little things. We remember them. Showing up and doing your best is not a small thing. Thank you for being a father figure.

Take some time this month and share your gratitude with your father figures. Let them know what they’ve done to make a difference in your life.

Arvada Chamber Announces Fundraising Accomplishment

The chamber has announced it has surpassed its $2.75 million investment stretch goal to support its regional economic strength initiative, Big Opportunities for Leaders To Deliver (B.O.L.D.) 2026. In less than a year, the chamber secured a mix of private, public and individual investments that will fund the initiative’s five year strategy to directly impact economic opportunities across Jefferson and Adams Counties, addressing challenges around talent development, housing, childcare capacity, and the business environment.

Chris started Stonebridge Builders around the end of 2005. “I wanted to create a business where people wanted to show up for work, were engaged, and felt valued.” The business started with house remodels and things like updating kitchens. Eventually, Stonebridge Builders started taking on larger jobs. As the company developed a strong reputation, architects became eager to collaborate with them, while Chris says they remain dedicated to working directly with individual homeowners, as well.

Covid took a toll on the company. “We pivoted and started focusing more on residential jobs.” Homeowners realized the importance of creating functional and comfortable spaces, leading the team to do a multitude of home upgrades including home offices, kitchen remodels, sound rooms, and basement refinishing projects. That adaptability and resilience during a difficult time allowed the company to continue growing and serving clients effectively.

Chris's favorite part of the job is connecting with clients and understanding their vision for their dream homes. “I love capturing the spirit of what they had in mind and working on the technical, problem-solving challenges associated with construction.”

Stonebridge Builders can handle just about any size job. They've done a lot of big commercial projects including work on the Two Twin Towers and large apartment complexes in Denver. The company collaborates extensively with multiple municipal housing authorities and nonprofits in the Denver metro area.

Mile High Behavioral Health Center has been a client for more than thirteen years. Stonebridge Builders is currently converting commercial space into housing units for the center. In fact, one of Chris' all time favorite projects was working on a shelter, through the center, for women who had faced domestic violence. “The women who were going to be living there made me a quilt and wrote thank you letters to our team. We were helping women get out of awful situations, and the quilt was just so touching and meant so much.”

A Family Approach

“What’s it like working with family?” I asked Andy and Ryan Roy, Westminster’s fatherand-son insurance duo. They simultaneously burst into laughter. It’s a unique working situation at 3R Insurance Agency, but in the end, it brings them together.

All laughs aside, working closely with each other has grown their relationship. “I think we think a lot alike. We have the same goals in mind, and we talk through things,” Andy says. They agree that it has matured their

relationship. “I think we see each other more as equals now,” Ryan notes. Ryan’s sister is also involved with the family business, working as an account manager. Andy’s wife helps out at the agency part-time.

Prior to starting 3R Insurance Agency, Andy grew up in construction and worked for a decade in trucking. Now, 3R Insurance is a thriving agency supporting the Colorado community. Ryan first got involved with the family business in 2002 before coming on full-time in 2017.

To 3R Insurance, business is personal, and not only because they are family. Insurance is their way of protecting the community. Unexpected disasters, from car accidents to house fires, can happen to all of us. The agency values knowing that their clients have security and peace of mind in case of an unforeseen event. Having proper coverage ensures that your property can be restored in case of loss. In fact, making that happen is what Ryan considers to be the most rewarding part of the business.

Back in 2021, the Marshall fire swept through Colorado causing astonishing destruction. In less than a day, nearly a thousand homes were engulfed in flames. Many people were unprepared to handle the sudden damage. Up to 80% of those affected were underinsured, according to Andy. Experiencing a natural disaster is distressing enough, and handling the aftermath while uninsured is all the more difficult. 3R Insurance wants to ensure that nobody is put in that position.

Last July, insurance became even more personal to the Roy family. “We are right in the midst of building our own home. We had a fire last July, and we are rebuilding our house. Fortunately, we have the proper insurance, but it has opened our eyes up even more to what the cost of rebuilding really is and the struggle it is for the insured on the claims side,” Andy said. He gained an even deeper understanding of just how important insurance is to the community.

The agency specializes in a comprehensive variety of insurance solutions including both personal and business insurance. On the personal side, they

Coming up with an accurate replacement cost for clients is paramount. The replacement cost is the price of replacing an asset at the present time, and it varies based on the qualities of that asset. Furnishings, finishes in bathrooms and kitchens, and more are all taken into account.

Factors like having a smaller home or a home with no basement could potentially lower the replacement cost.

Frequently, putting together the perfect insurance package means being flexible and working with that client’s personal needs and expectations. If a client has a smaller budget, Andy says, “We try to find some discounts or savings while making sure they still have the right coverages.” However, they also prioritize being upfront and honest when there is no room for 3R Insurance to offer better coverage or more support. Smoke and Spirits

Four years ago, Vernon Johnson and his wife, Cassandra, drove more than an hour, so Vernon could meet with some high profile Denver hospitality executives about a bar management position. Vernon had spent ten years working at restaurants in and around the Denver International Airport. He was no stranger to long drives and endless

work hours. His wife was completely supportive, but Vernon found himself wondering if he was ready to do that again. “I was wearing a suit,” he says, “I was ready, but something just didn't feel right. They offered me a great position at an amazing spot in Denver, and I just turned it down.”

Cassandra was downstairs waiting for Vernon after the meeting. “She was sitting in a booth and just looked beautiful. She'd saved me a bite of Bananas Foster.” He told her he'd turned down the position— largely because of a gut feeling.

That same day, Vernon found a job listing on Craigslist for a bar position at The Butchery in Arvada. He contacted them immediately. “I was still in my suit from the meeting, and I went right over to meet with the (previous) general manager of The Butchery. That was it.” He was hired as the lead bartender and mixologist, and within a day, he had redesigned the bar menu.

While working at the Gaylord Rockies Marriott by the airport, Vernon went through an extensive training with some of the best bartending trainers in the world. “I was able to train directly with some incredibly talented people,” he recounts.” One of those mentors was Ravin Buzzell who owns Bezel downtown. “We stayed in touch. He always took time to speak with me, compare ideas, and encourage me.” The two got together after Vernon had transformed The Butchery's bar program. “He told me, 'You've made it. You're here! You and me, brother, we're looking eye to eye now.' I wanted to make him proud. I really look up to him, and he's had a major impact on everything I've done.”

Vernon loves bourbons and whiskeys. His signature drink at The Butchery is a Smoked Old Fashion. “It's a whole, table-side experience. One guest called it the Sizzling Fajitas of Cocktails.” But Vernon also has a passion for gin. “I love the versatility of gins. They're so complex. To make something harmonize that has so many notes is incredible.”

The bar staff at The Butchery wants guests to go on a journey while trying their unique cocktails. Vernon explains, “I want people to feel like while

you're here, you don't have a care in the world. I'm going to take care of you.” Vernon makes sure the bar and food menu compliment each other. “I eat all the food. I want to know the ingredients and how the chef prepares them. I also cater the bar menu around what I know the people in Arvada want.”

Vernon is especially proud of the team at The Butchery. “We're all very close. We're always offering new things to our guests while still providing consistency in our long-standing menu items people love.”

In recent years, the community has recognized Vernon's hard work and creativity. He was named Arvada Press Bartender of the Year for 2022. The Butchery also won Best Bar and Best Happy Hour, and Vernon was named a Hospitality Hero in December of 2022 by Arvada Report. “I just owe so much to my wife and my son, London. They've been my inspiration to do well.”

For anyone thinking about a career in bar management, Vernon advises, “Stay true to yourself. Bring your personality, and bring passion into everything you make.”

Rusty Nail

Some say an early form of this very basic and yet complex-flavored drink was first noted in 1937 in a tribute to the British Industries Fair. Since then, it’s gone through many variations but all focused on the simplicity of the cocktail with its earthy tones, slight sweetness, and manly effervescence. Develop your own, unique twist to this cocktail, but here is the original recipe.

Ingredients

• 1 ½ ounces Scotch whisky

• ½ ounce Drambuie Liqueur

• Lemon twist for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Combine Scotch and Drambuie over ice in a rocks glass. Stir well to combine, and if preferred, garnish with lemon twist. That’s it.

2. Sit back, relax, put your feet up, breathe in the aroma of the drink before taking a small sip, and then let your taste buds settle into the rich leather slipper of a cocktail that is a traditional Rusty Nail.

Candied Pecans

A rich and earthy snack

DIRECTIONS:

Candied nuts are a rich, hearty treat and a great pairing with a whiskey-based cocktail. They can also be a great addition to a cheeseboard or appetizer spread. It's an easy recipe and something you can make in less than half an hour. The nuts can be enjoyed on their own or added to salads, rice dishes, or desserts.

INGREDIENTS:

• 6 tablespoons brown sugar

• 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• A pinch of cayenne pepper or dash of Sriracha

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1 1/2 tablespoons water

• 2 teaspoons orange zest (optional)

• 2 cups (6 ounces) pecan halves

01. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, or use a silicone baking mat.

02. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, cayenne pepper, vanilla, water, and the orange zest (optional) to a medium skillet. Place the skillet over medium heat and cook, stirring often until the brown sugar melts into a bubbling sauce (about 1 minute).

03. Add the pecans and stir so that the brown sugar sauce coats them. Cook, stirring the entire time, until the pecans look candied and smell a bit nutty (2 to 3 minutes). As the nuts heat up, the sauce will

slowly coat them and become shiny. Watch closely so the nuts do not scorch.

04. Transfer the candied pecans to the baking sheet and spread them into a single layer. Allow the pecans to cool, and then break them apart if necessary before serving.

05. Store cooled candied nuts in an airtight container. They will last at room temperature for at least one week and in the refrigerator for several weeks.

06. These flavorful treats are a great gift for friends or a wonderful addition to bring to a party at a friend's house.

Tickets are on sale for the 2023 Taste of Arvada! The event is from 6:00-8:00 PM with VIP early access at 5:00 PM. More than 70 Denver Metro and Arvada restaurants, craft breweries and non-food vendors will be there. Restaurant and bar vendors will compete for prizes in their categories, voted on by attendees.
