I love any opportunity to recognize the women who make my life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, girlfriends, mothers, sisters, friends, and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
With Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on our moms, but it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have all made an indelible impact on us. We're positively influenced by other family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring light into our lives and making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop locally and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to visit businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role as publisher of Arvada Lifestyle. I love connecting with and championing the best of the best.
There are so many amazing women in our community. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are cornerstones in our lives.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call, or get your kids to video chat with the women in your life who deserve recognition and thanks. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love and appreciate them.

“I love being able to see people obtain home ownership,” says Cleo Lewis, the founder of Central Park Mortgage. It’s a challenging market, but Cleo says she loves seeing families change their lives financially and be able to start building generational wealth. Cleo has three daughters. When her youngest was born, she decided to start her own business for more flexibility. “Clients always come first, but it’s also important to take care of ourselves and our families. You have to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help others.”
To those looking to find success in the industry, Cleo says “Work hard. Never give up, and every second counts. Be honest, and authentically show people you care about them. And most importantly, give back. You’ll get way more in return if you genuinely give.” That giving spirit extends through past programs Central Park Mortgage has developed guiding families from underserved communities through financial recovery and helping them become homeowners.
Cleo says, “It doesn’t matter what color you are or how much money you have. Work hard, and you can do it. Don’t let anything hold you back, including hearing nos. The next one might be a really great yes.”
Arvada City Manager Lorie Gillis has worked in finance and business operations throughout her career. She served as finance director for the City of Golden and chief financial officer for Jeffco Public Schools.
Lorie was deputy city manager for Arvada for eight years before being appointed the Arvada City Manager in 2022. “People are the best part of the job—the employees and the community,” she says. With the community facing a few tragic events in recent years, Lorie says, “Our entire employee base has been through a lot. It’s time for some healing and growth.”
Lorie has three adult children and two grandchildren. She credits a lot of her success to her supportive husband and family.
For young women looking to take a similar career path, Lorie suggests being open to learning, and bring your tenacity. “Don’t let things get in the way--make it possible. You have to power through challenges and changes to get to the good outcomes, so look for what makes you happy and what you’re passionate about doing.”
Karen Kristopeit-Parker is an Arvada native and a culinary rock star in Colorado. She’s in the Colorado Restaurant Association Hall of Fame and was the association’s first female chairman. Karen started at C.S. Goodberry’s in Arvada as a teenager, was the dining room manager for Mount Vernon Country Club, and was co-owner of the Fresh Fish Company and Proof NiteClub.
In 2021, the owners of The Butchery brought Karen in as general manager. “They really just let me run with it. I took three months to make sure we had the right team, so we would bring success to The Butchery.”
Education is one of Karen’s passions. She’s involved with the ProStart Program in Colorado for culinary learning, and she works with an apprentice—a young woman working at The Butchery in conjunction with the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation and the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Foundation. Karen says, “The restaurant industry is a lot of hard work, and you’ve got to have passion and grit to work in the field.”
When people come to The Butchery, Karen treats it like they’re coming to her home. “I want you to have an amazing, memorable experience.” Taking care of employees is a priority, as well. “They’re part of my family. We’re on stage together all the time, and we set the atmosphere for the entire experience. The Butchery has such a great vibe, and that’s the people.”

Alana Anzalone, Managing Partner of Anzalone Law Offices in Colorado, comes from a family of attorneys who have dedicated their adult lives to fighting for victims injured due to another’s negligence. As a woman and a mom she has built a practice rooted in balancing the compassion for the injured and the relentless fight for justice. Alana has been a Colorado Super Lawyers Rising Star since 2017 and a Top 40 Under 40 National Trial Lawyer since 2016.
It is a constant struggle for women to be seen as equal. “There are many things we cannot control, but what we can control is how we make our mark,” says Alana. “Prove yourself, and stay true to your word. Be great at what you do, and commit to continually learning. This creates credibility, and that can’t be taken from you.”
Alana has made it her mission to promote and support women to be leaders within her industry. Although Colorado tends to be more progressive than other states, Alana says female lawyers around the U.S. are still mistaken for the paralegal or court reporter and often expected to clean a conference room after a meeting. They are cognizant of their attire and, unfortunately, suffer harassment and pay discrimination. Through her work empowering other women to become more confident in their own practice and knowledge of the law, her observation is that the instances of discrimination are becoming less prevalent.
For Alana, it’s all about connections and caring about her clients. “I’m representing a human being, and it’s so important to get to know them and understand why their lives are negatively affected by whatever conflict caused them to be uprooted.”
Co-owners, Great Harvest Bread Co. in Arvada
From aerospace engineer to running a bakery, Micki Nelson has seen a lot of interesting workplaces and accomplished a great deal. Now considered retired , she is co-owner of the Great Harvest Bread Co. in Arvada with her daughter, Aimee Charlton. “I just love working with people,” says Micki.
Aimee was working in nonprofit management prior to owning the bakery, but she knew she wanted something different. “I prefer to work in people development. I love taking an organization to the next level and helping people grow.” The bakery has become a well-oiled machine with great management. Micki does the behind the scenes work including bookkeeping, office management, and logistics while Aimee is focused on catering and converting their POS system.
“Aimee does everything to move us into the future and grow,” says Micki, “And I make sure all the finances are straight and organized.” Micki says she loves what they’ve been able to build through the bakery. “We’ve
tripled our sales and developed an amazing group of employees and dedicated customers. It’s just a nice place to be.” The mother-daughter team had a 5 year plan to become a million dollar bakery, and they expect to hit that mark within the next 6 months.
Micki has dealt with a lot of difficulties in her career as a woman while also seeing amazing success. “I was the only woman in my engineering team. I was turned down by my favorite college, because I was told I’d be taking a job from a man who needed it to support a family—but not me.”
“Because of trailblazing women like my mom, we have more opportunities today,” Aimee says. She advises women to remember to support one another. “It’s important to mentor each other and not see others as competition. Cheer for each other’s successes.”
Micki ‘s advice to young women is, “Don’t worry about the risk, just do it.”
“When one of us is down, the other is there to pick her up,” says Aimee. “And that support means everything.”
Talnua Distillery is the first distillery outside of Ireland fully dedicated to making single pot still whiskey. The name Talnua comes from the Irish-Gaelic words talamh which means land and nua which means new. It’s representative of the distillery’s passion to bring an old-world style of distilling to America. The distillery opened to the public St. Patrick’s Day 2019.
Vice President and Co-founder Meagan Miller and her husband were inspired to start the distillery after experiencing single pot still whiskey during a trip to Ireland. They decided to develop their own American version of it. “We’re at a high altitude with a dry environment, which is very different than Ireland where it’s humid, and they’re at sea level.” Talnua is doing a project with an Irish distillery in which both companies will use the same resources and methods to make whiskey and then compare the results based on the different environments in which they were produced.
“My mentality has always been that I wanted to start a business of my own. Even when I was a kid, I tried to sell anything I could,” explains Meagan. For those considering a similar path of entrepreneurship, she advises, “The best thing you can do for your career is to work on leadership skills. Continually grow and learn, and be ready to stand up for yourself and your morals.”
Meagan especially enjoys empowering other women who work with her. “If they are facing a challenge, I always encourage them to ask for help. It’s okay to not know the answer. Don’t be afraid to ask.” She also recommends people starting their own businesses be open to hiring those who know the things you don’t. “We have an amazing team. The people you surround yourself with are crucial, and it’s that team we’ve built that has made us successful.”
Making a great cheesecake can be tricky, and not everyone has all the special pans and tools available to make it traditionally. Here's an easy-to-make, delicious cheesecake recipe anyone can do at home.
CRUST INGREDIENTS:
• 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs or 9 -10 whole graham crackers, crushed
• 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
• 5 1/3 tablespoons butter, melted
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
FILLING INGREDIENTS:
• two 8-ounce packages of cream cheese, room temperature
• 2/3 cup granulated sugar
• 2 large eggs, at room temperature
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
1. Select a pie pan with an inside top dimension of at least 9 inches and at least 1 1/4 inch high sides. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2. To make the crust: stir together all of the crust ingredients, mixing until thoroughly combined. Press the crumbs into the bottom and up the sides of the pie pan, making a thicker layer on the bottom than on the sides.
3. To make the filling: mix together the room-temperature cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Mix in the eggs and vanilla, again until smooth. Use a mixer at low-medium speed to avoid putting too much air in the batter. To avoid lumps, soften the cream cheese first.
4. Set the pie pan onto a baking sheet, which makes it easier to move and also protects the bottom of the crust from scorching. Pour the filling into the crust.
5. To bake the cheesecake: place the cheesecake in the oven. Bake it for 20 minutes. Then add a crust shield or cover the crust with strips of aluminum foil. Bake for an additional 10 minutes (for a total of 30). A digital thermometer inserted into the filling
1 inch from the edge should read between 165°F and 170°F. The filling won't look entirely set in the center.
6. Remove the cheesecake from the oven and set the pan on a rack to cool. Then refrigerate it, covered, until ready to serve.
7. Store any leftover cheesecake in the refrigerator for several days or freeze.
OTHER IDEAS:
Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake —spoon seedless raspberry jam onto the top of the filling once it's in the crust before baking. Swirl around the top of the cheesecake, and bake as directed.
Fresh Fruit—top with fresh strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries for a fresh, light, and easy topping.
Chocolate or Caramel—drizzle caramel or chocolate sauce across the pieces of cheesecake after they are cut and plated. You could even get creative serving caramel popcorn cheesecake. Top your cheesecake with buttered, salted popcorn and pour caramel on top for an eye-popping, unique treat.

Raspberry Syrup Ingredients:
• 1/4 cup water
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup fresh raspberries
Martini Ingredients:
• 2 ounces vodka
• 1 ounce raspberry syrup
• 1/2 ounce triple sec
• 1/2 ounce lemon juice
• raspberries for garnish
Instructions
• For the Syrup—heat the water, sugar and raspberries in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and lightly crush the raspberries with a spoon. Pour through a mesh strainer and refrigerate until cold. It can be stored up to 2-3 weeks and can also be used for things like cheesecake and ice cream topping.
• Making the Martini—combine the vodka, raspberry syrup, triple sec and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and pour into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with some fresh raspberries. You can also top with a dollop of whipped cream or a fresh, edible flower.
Pro Tips:
• Fresh raspberries are best, but you can use frozen, as well.
• Don’t skip the straining process on your homemade syrup, or it will have lots of seeds.
Martinis are a super fun, romantic drink to make at home and enjoy with someone you love. They’re always best with homemade raspberry syrup, but you can also purchase raspberry syrup that’s ready to use.
• Place your martini glasses in the freezer for a half hour before serving.
Creating, connecting, and community are the core values that drive Alyssa Rossi, the owner of AdiLuna Boutique in Arvada. The store, previously known as Little by Little, has expanded. You can still find the wonderful products you've come to love for the littles in your life at the shop, but Alyssa is now also offering many new items focused on the bohemian chic theme for women.
With the expansion in products, Alyssa decided to change the name of the store at 5626 Olde Wadsworth to AdiLuna Boutique in honor of her daughter and Alyssa's own connection to the moon. “Adi is my daughter's name, and she's just the most amazing little human. Plus, I really connect with the moon's energy and how the moon signifies femininity.” Alyssa is bringing in unique clothes, jewelry, and home accessories and fostering a female-focused, empowering environment. “I've been working on what the store stands for—not just what we sell but how the community can come together here.”
The store was established four years ago but only recently changed its name and started broadening its products and customer base. Alyssa says it's been rewarding watching Arvada evolve and having amazing encounters with people who come into the store. She's hoping the space will be a place for community members to host events and network, using the shop in different ways. “We have our first women's event scheduled in May. We did a lot of that before Covid.” The plan is for the events in the future to be hosted by the store and a variety of others but all focused on community and uplifting women. A number of local boutiques have closed in the region recently, and there's been a gap in which local artisans and craftspeople have not had as many places to market their products. AdiLuna is working to fill that void. Alyssa says she felt it was her responsibility to make that happen. “I want people to know the store is different now and offering more. That growth is a positive thing. We want to be a resource—a collective of arts and products.”
Alyssa is an artist, as well. Her own personal art business is called Leading with Heart Art , and she sells her paintings in the shop and in other locations. Each of her paintings comes with a poem that Alyssa wrote. A good friend of hers makes handmade jewelry which is available in the store, and the same woman also does a really cool gift idea called Blind Date with a Book You purchase a book wrapped attractively with just some basic hints of what the book might be about, so the content, title, and author are all a lovely surprise. Alyssa is also working with the Denver Plant Lady. “We've started offering
really interesting plants, and it's brought the space alive with all the greenery.” Other products available include a CBD line through a company called Lichen and crocheted earrings from 4EdenRivers , as well as locally made hats for the whole family. “Everything kind of has that bohemian feeling,” explains Alyssa. “I have a lot of things that are comfortably chic.”
Candyl is another interesting company offering products at AdiLuna. The Denver business sells and curates candles but also does cordless, rechargeable diffusers that look like candles. A lot of diffusers appear rather industrial, but these are beautiful. Because they're rechargeable, you can put them anywhere.
When considering the space, Alyssa wants people to think of cohesiveness and togetherness. Contact AdiLuna Boutique at (720) 592-0144, or stop in and check out the new products as well as the same sort of wonderful items for kids that the shop has always made available. Whether you're looking for a gift or something for yourself, you'll likely find something just perfect!

Dani Everson is a mom of three, a wife, and co-owner of the three popular Clementine's Salons in the Denver region: LoHi, Aurora's Stanley Marketplace, and Olde Town Arvada. Dani and her husband, John, have three kids: Brandon (21), Kyle (nearly 12), and Huxley (8). Originally from northern Virginia, Dani, John, and Brandon moved to Denver in 2008. “We took a quiz online,” Dani says, “And it said we should move to Denver. My husband had been here before and loved it.”
The family has been extremely happy with the move. “Arvada feels like a small town while being a pretty decent sized city. I'm not a snowboarder or skier, but I feel like because there's so much of those outdoor activities, people are in a better space mentally.”
“You will always have more work to do, but by fueling yourself and your home/work balance, it will give you more stability and strength to push through the hard things.”
—Dani Everson
For any parent, after school activities are challenging. Dani's two youngest kids play tennis, and Huxley is getting into art. Brandon also played baseball all through middle and high school.
Dani attributes a huge part of the success of the business to her husband's willingness to be a stay-at-home dad. “He was selfless. When my career really started taking off, he stayed with Brandon while we built the salons. He didn't have an ego and saw the value in what we were building.” To be fair, Dani says it's a home with a lot of testosterone. They even have two male dogs. “I'm very outnumbered,” she says. “Sometimes I come home, and there might be chicken wings everywhere. But they are so happy.”
Finding a balance point is a work in progress for Dani. “When I only had Brandon, I could bring him everywhere, but once we had more kids and more salons, it became harder to turn off work at night.”
The key, according to Dani, is scheduling. She even schedules times she stops dealing with work while at home, which is hard. A business owner's work never really ends. After 20 years, she's finally taking weekends off with family. “I think it's about being there for all the regular things like their tennis matches and not getting distracted by work when I'm there. I'm trying to be more present.”
Dani's biggest advice for any mom building a business is to focus on scheduling and work-life balance from the start. “Schedule the things that are not fun to do sooner. Then they fall off your list faster and cause you less stress. You will always have more work to do, but by fueling yourself and your home/work balance, it will give you more stability and strength to push through the hard things.”
The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Take a Flower Arranging Class Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
Go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events.
A curated selection of the most intriguing upcoming events in our area.
