We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. Like most people, I sometimes fall into the trap of being too focused on work. I think a lot about the time and effort involved in everything I do, as well as the costs. It's easy to get bogged down putting our energy into the things we can easily control and those with the biggest financial or professional benefit. But the truth is life can be unfulfilling if we miss out on the little things that bring us joy. There's more to life than our offices and our laptops. We need to leave some room for exploring, learning, trying new things, going new places, and--dare I say it--getting a little lost once in a while. Losing track of time is a bit of a gift. Sometimes you have to venture out of your comfort zone to make a truly amazing memory. Those more unstructured and open-ended times lead to some of the most incredible experiences and friendships. Consider starting small, like perhaps limiting your screen time during certain days or hours, and plan at least one new and interesting thing a month for you or your family to try. An adventure doesn't have to be a big, wild vacation. It can be playing a new board game on the patio with the kids or with friends, walking on a trail you've never explored, or trying a bakery you've never visited. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. Consider prioritizing time away from your regular schedule of life, and lose yourself just a bit in a park or even a book. Make time for the things that truly matter in life. I'm giving you permission and a friendly reminder to--and I say this with warmth and best wishes--GET LOST! Happy April and enjoy your adventure!

Individualized attention and expertise enhance every customer’s experience at Arvada Triathlon Company. Arvada Tri and Arvada Bike Repair are both in the retail space on West 64th Avenue, and every staff member has a specialty–a sports emphasis that allows them to advise clients on the best footwear, bikes, apparel, accessories, nutrition and more. They specialize in triathlon gear, bike maintenance, training plans and recovery programs. Passionate triathlete Zach Simon is the owner of Arvada Tri, and he’s involved in every aspect of the business. He says Ralston Creek runs right behind the shop. “We do weekly group runs Wednesday nights starting at 6:15. The typical run is about four miles, but depending on the group, some want to go less or more.” It’s important to Zach that Arvada Tri provides everything triathletes need at affordable prices. Their experience is greatly improved by the right, quality sportswear and gear. “We have 40 people on our triathlon team, with people ages 26 through their upper 50s.” Both Zach and Dylan at the shop are USA Triathlon Certified Coaches, and they have two other coaches they work with regularly. Dylan also recently started offering one-on-one coaching at levels between $100 and $300 a month. CONTINUED >

“We really do everything for endurance athletes,” says Zach. “ We take care of runners, cyclists, swimmers, and the triathlete community, and we service any type of bike.” Arvada Bike Repair has triathlete bikes or TT bikes available, plus all the gear you need from helmets to bike computers. The shop carries Felt and Cervelo brands and does full tune-ups (multiple levels) as well as custom bike jobs including framework, builds and repairs. They have an extensive parts division, too. Mike is the bike service manager there, and Sunny is the bike fitter. In the bike studio, Sunny adjusts the bikes for the best efficiency. A one year membership for the triathlon team at Arvada Tri is $300. Members get a custom one-piece suit and access to the store’s recovery lounge with compression boots, vibration plate, oxygen, and foam rollers. Members get a store discount, access to a private Facebook page, team socials and workouts, and educational clinics on things like hydration and nutrition. Arvada Tri also has coached swims for members every week at the YMCA, and Heather is the store’s general manager and also the swim expert/ swim coach. Zach and his team work with athletes on race day nutrition, too, breaking it down to calorie and electrolyte intake. “My philosophy is you’re not unlocking your full race potential if you’re not considering all those things.” For runners, the store carries running shoes from On Cloud, Saucony and Altra, as well as race belts and apparel, plus they can do gait analysis. Zach explains, “We take a video of you running on the treadmill, and we can determine where your foot strike is and if you’re overpronating (when the foot rolls inward). Then we can recommend the best footwear for you.” Arvada Triathlon Company’s Instagram page @arvadatriathloncompany paints a picture of the spirit of the store. Whenever a person gets a new bike, the staff uses things like confetti cannons to capture the moment. “We love helping people get started and helping them take the sports to the next level.” If you’re thinking about becoming a triathlete, Zach says don’t be intimidated. “The multi-sport community is extremely inclusive. If you can swim, you can do a triathlon. You don’t need a huge financial investment, either. It’s a sport for everybody.”

The Arvada Chamber of Commerce has a 98 year history of serving the businesses and nonprofits in the community, and a lot has changed and evolved over the years. “When the chamber started, the community was just being founded, and over time, we’ve had to evolve to meet new community needs,” says President and CEO Kami Welch, who has been in the position for ten years. “We’ve gotten away from pageants, parties, and parades, and we now strive to be a catalyst for addressing the challenges and solving the problems our businesses face.” The chamber is a group of businesses, organizations, and local leaders fostering meaningful connections and developing the next generation of talent and leadership. The group’s work is to drive conversations, develop resources, and coordinate large-scale initiatives that businesses can’t tackle easily on their own. It’s about thriving as a collective. “We hope to elevate how people see and engage with the chamber,” says Kami. “We believe there is always room to serve our community better.” Chamber membership varies from $400 a year to sponsorship levels up to $20,000, and there are four key reasons to join. Membership allows your business or organization to: 1. Connect with the businesses and leaders of our local business ecosystem and belong to a community actively dedicated to your success. 2. Grow the potential of your business and your whole staff with member programs for marketing, leadership, healthcare, and professional development. 3. Receive business support, advocacy, and guidance on issues such as regulation, hiring, funding, health and safety, and more. 4. Impact the long-term health of our local economy by investing and engaging in solutions to challenges that impact all Arvada businesses.

Being part of the chamber over time carries greater benefits than a short-term commitment, according to Kami. “We often hear it's a long game. Being involved in your community has long-term impacts on your business, your employees, and your community as a whole. It's a commitment beyond just your business, but people do see direct benefits, as well.” Surveys through the chamber show that members see the long-term gains. “We rank exceptionally high for a membership organization,” says Kami. “A big piece of meeting the needs in Arvada is doing community assessments to see what the pain points faced by our businesses are. With that knowledge, we can better address those issues through our programming.” Finding qualified talent is the number one challenge. Inflation has also had a big impact on the businesses' ability to thrive and grow. There are also difficulties in the marketing space, and the chamber hears how regulatory restrictions influence success. The chamber does assessments every quarter to track trends. For instance, in 2021, mental health/burnout was number eight or nine on the list of challenges, but by the end of the year Kami says it was the number two concern. “It definitely caused us to pause. We worked with Jefferson Center for Mental Health to provide a variety of services for employers and employees.” One of the core values of the chamber team is to provide “wow” experiences. Seven staff members currently work at the chamber, and there’s a plan to have eight by the end of the year. The chamber has a brand new website that's live now with site visitors in mind. Kami says, “We're doing a wide array of work in the community, and we're working to improve how we communicate all those efforts and opportunities. We want people to understand how valuable this work is to Arvada.” Kami says what makes the Arvada Chamber different is the quality of local leaders involved. “They’re all

Tiki! But Not! DRINK RECIPE FROM MARMALADE LOUNGE AT CLEMENTINE’S SALON IN ARVADA

I love sharing exciting and interesting cocktails with our guests at Marmalade Lounge. This is the first bar in which I’ve built the cocktail program from the bottom up. One of the proudest moments in my life was seeing this vision come to fruition. I love watching Marmalade pick up speed and seeing people become obsessed with our drinks. I’m excited to spread all the love and delicious cocktails here in Olde Town Arvada. My inspiration for this cocktail is spring in New Orleans. I call it a Tiki! But Not! It’s not a full-on sweet sugar bomb of a tiki cocktail--which are great when I’m in the mood. It’s more of a refreshing, bitter tiki cocktail. It also has bourbon instead of rum which is a great twist.

ingredients: • • • •

2 ounces Four Roses Bourbon 1/2 ounce Angostura Amaro 1 ounce Passion Fruit Ginger Syrup 1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

instructions: Combine all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake. Pour all contents into a glass to serve. I recommend a large cocktail glass. Top with ice, and garnish with fresh mint and pretty flowers.

In our busy lives, the appreciation and practice of art can fall to the back burner. The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities fosters the artist in all of us, whether you’re new to art or a devoted creative. Without exaggeration, Arvada Center has a creative experience for everyone. If you’re looking to get hands on and uncover your own talents, explore Arvada Center’s classes. They offer a wide array of sessions, including musical theater, drawing, dance, and knitting, in multiple skill levels. Spring classes, from March to May, are offered in a variety of lengths. Some meet weekly for 8-10 weeks, and others are week-long sessions. Ceramics, run by Bebe Alexander, is a particular favorite with the community. After spring classes, summer camps begin in June. Similar to their regular classes, summer camps provide a space to learn and explore creatively in a variety of artistic disciplines. They are perfect for kids, allowing them to have fun while flexing their creative sides.

Introducing youth to the arts is a pillar of Arvada Center’s values–an especially impactful mission following the COVID-19 era during which many children’s art programs were forced to go dark. The center recently presented Charlotte’s Web, a classic story perfect for all ages. Arvada Center has a school programs division specifically to expose young people to theater and the arts. School groups find great value in attending the performances and participating in classes. The experience allows students to create memories while enriching their education with the arts. As part of their outreach program, Arvada Center’s teaching artists travel directly to schools in the Denver area, giving students creative experiences they might not otherwise be afforded. “Live theater builds empathy and helps you understand people who are not like you, which, particularly when you're young, is so important and wonderful,” notes Sarah Kolb,

Director of Marketing and Communications. Students can attend live theater performances, visit the art gallery, and learn hands-on about pottery, drama, dance, and more. The art gallery is currently featuring an exhibit called Art + Science which explores the connection between science and creative expression. The center's 10,000 square foot gallery space highlights living artists from Colorado and the western region, with about four public exhibitions a year. Attend a play at Arvada Center to have a wonderful evening while stimulating the extraordinary Colorado art scene. At the end of February, the center opened Our Town, an iconic American play by Thornton Wilder. Our Town is a cerebral and compelling look into the nature of life and family. Originally written in 1938, Arvada Center has revitalized it for modern audiences. floors are painted all in the Arvada Center, on par with the impressiveness of Broadway tours. Arvada Center has a unique position within the city. It was part of the City of Arvada until about seven years ago, when it became a nonprofit. “We have patrons and volunteers who have been coming to the Arvada Center for forty years, which is such a wonderful community of people to have,” Sarah says. Bruschetta Variations EASY AND FAST WITH ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES ARTICLE BY ALLISON BANKSTON

You just heard from several friends, and they're heading over to your house now! It's the perfect time to break out some of the random ingredients you have on hand and make some colorful, creative appetizers. We're starting with the concept of bruschetta but building onto it with lots of different items and flavors. All of these appetizers start with toasted baguette bread. Slice the bread into 1/4 inch thick pieces, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder and a little salt and pepper. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until lightly browned. FOR TRADITIONAL BRUSCHETTA TOPPING YOU'LL NEED: • 4 tablespoons of olive oil • 2 cloves of chopped garlic • 4 large tomatoes, diced • 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • a pinch of red pepper flakes • 1/4 cup fresh, grated parmesan cheese

INSTRUCTIONS: Heat the oil in a pan, and add garlic. Sauté until the garlic is softened. Remove from heat and toss diced tomatoes with the mixture. Add the salt, basil, and red pepper flakes. Let the tomatoes sit for 30 minutes. Spoon onto the toasted bread, and sprinkle with parmesan cheese.

SO MANY OPTIONS: Now take that same appetizer concept and see what's in your refrigerator now. Some other ways to top that toasted bread might be: 1. Slices of mozzarella, with folded salami, olives, and basil 2. Goat cheese as the base with slices of apple sprinkled with dill 3. Cream cheese layered under sliced cucumber, a dash of soy sauce, and finely chopped peanuts 4. Garlic hummus topped with avocado and sesame seeds The combinations are endless! Remember to keep it colorful and fun, and your guests will love it.
