The sun is brighter, and the warmth of the season has us thinking about getting outdoors and finding new and exciting ways to experience our amazing community. For some, spring is all about gardening, which can be incredibly enjoyable, but that's not the only way to see growth. This month's theme is Explore. We encourage you to try a new adventure, sign up for something different, and maybe find a new passion as you step out of your comfort zone. an adventure for kids WITH CODE NINJAS ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CODE NINJAS ARVADA
It’s no secret that the digital landscape has taken the world by storm, be it the vast knowledge offered online or the influence brought upon by social media. Beneath it all lies a foundation of computer science, a rapidly growing career path and STEM field (science, technology, engineering and math) that children enjoy. Take it from Marie Rotter of Code Ninjas, an afterschool coding academy for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The main program at Code Ninjas, Create, is a drop-in program with no scheduled class times. This is helpful for working parents with hectic schedules that can’t fit into set time slots, as it can be stressful rushing to drop your children off at a specific time. Instead, children simply walk in and scan their membership wristband which correlates with their “belt,” log into their computer, and start their hour or two-hour long coding session. Much like a karate or taekwondo dojo, Code Ninjas identifies student “ranks” according to the belts that they hold with beginners starting with a white wristband. Throughout the Create program, children are encouraged to code through gamified education. In other words, Code Ninjas uses video games to teach children how to build their own video games in Java, C# and Unity once they reach higher belts.
The entire program takes between four and four and a half years to complete and serves as a foundational coding education. Eventually, students reach the Black Belt Program which requires them to build and launch their own games in the iOS app store, with their finished products available for parents to experience through an online portal. Code Ninjas offers monthly memberships and weekly packages of one or two hours, with the two-hour package being the most popular. They also hold 10 different themed camps based on Minecraft, Roblox, stop-motion animation, and even a Become a YouTuber camp, plus a number of social events from summer camps and birthday parties to a regular parents’ night out on Fridays. It’s a unique exploratory experience for children, because, unlike most tutoring centers, students genuinely enjoy attending. According to Marie Rotter, a franchisee who opened her own location off Wadsworth Boulevard at the end of 2019, “They don’t have to choose between being creative and learning something that will help them with their future career. They can do both with coding.” Visit the website for more information at codeninjas.com, or call Marie’s Arvada office at (720) 432-2799 to get your children’s coding education off on the right foot.

These owners of automotive shops agree, you cannot overestimate the importance of timely and proper maintenance.
rob osborn
A PPLEWOOD SERVICE CENTER The pandemic has left us with a shortage of new cars, and Rob says that means we need to keep our older vehicles running longer. Oil changes are crucial. Rob says. “It’s important to follow the recommended schedule for your vehicle. Without proper maintenance, your car can’t last or keep you safe.” Another overlooked maintenance step is replacing your cabin filter, known as the forgotten filter. “With all the smoke we’ve experienced in the last year with recent fires, it’s especially important.” And don’t forget to check your radiator hoses. “Most people don’t do anything about it until they’re on the side of the road.”

Used cars are lasting much longer now than 20 years ago but only if they’re cared for by their owners. “When it comes to maintenance, it’s a lot like child support. Pay a little now or a lot later.” Scott recommends getting your car looked at regularly by a trusted auto shop. Build a relationship with someone, so you know what might need to be addressed now or soon. “Oil changes are recommended every 3,000 miles, and all fluids are recommended every 30,000.” Scott also suggests a car fund through your bank. That way when big repairs crop up, you’re prepared.
“People’s vehicles tend to be their babies,” says Blake, “We hate to give them bad news about their babies. One of the biggest mistakes is not addressing things when they first pop up. That can create more expensive repairs.” Brakes are often overlooked. “If you are hearing noises, you should have it looked at immediately. Better to pay $100 now than $1,000 later.” Check your engine cooling system, too. Your antifreeze can become acidic over time which can lead to corrosion. Blake advises, “You want to make sure you know anything that might affect your safety or the safety of other drivers.”

As a small to mid-sized business, your growth is always on watch. Whether it be your yearly sales, the size of your network, or your rising client base, you don’t miss a beat. However, the same can’t often be said about the legal side of things. It can be difficult to keep up with evolving operating agreements, employee handbooks, and the necessary policies to stay compliant with state and federal regulations. Basecamp Legal is your local partner in Colorado for the legal steps that will keep you compliant, while clearing the path for the exploration of new opportunities for your business. Basecamp Legal provides white glove legal services to new companies looking to make the next step, and those which need help getting over certain legal hurdles. Adrienne Fischer, a Denver-based lawyer and mediator with Basecamp Legal, says, “(We are) a team of approachable attorneys, who provide solutions to growing companies.” Overall, their mission is to ensure that clients have their legal ducks in a row when revisiting contracts, trying to sell their business, or if they require assistance while raising funds from new investors. The company is primarily focused on supporting outdoor and growing companies and caters to a handful of technology companies, as well. Adrienne says Basecamp’s attorneys are legal guides who navigate their clients through difficult processes, especially fundraising, which a large number of companies find daunting. This is why Basecamp Legal walks clients through each step of the legal process, such as keeping you educated on appropriate fundraising mechanisms and making sure your agreements match your operations for regulatory purposes. The bottom line being: when growing businesses come to Adrienne and her Basecamp team to explore new opportunities, they know precisely what’s happening every step of the way. On the topic of exploring new opportunities, the firm also enjoys assisting with investor relations, not to mention branding projects and trademarks. Adrienne and her team have helped countless growing organizations make sure they have the proper foundation documents in place and that they protect their brands. Basecamp Legal can help you mitigate risk while you run your business. These are ways to protect your income generation as well. It’s a mix of protecting the blood, sweat, and tears that went into forming your pride and joy, while staying open to the exploration of new business opportunities and bringing on talent. Either way, Basecamp Legal is committed to mitigating risk and protecting your assets at all costs. One last-yet-crucial note from Adrienne is that this is a great time of the year for a legal health check-up if you own a business. This is to make sure that you have the basic foundation documents in place to take your organization to the next level and to do it legally. She uses the example of operating agreements, which should be updated as the business grows like most documents created for your business.

Operating agreements, employment agreements, and others are essentially “living and breathing documents” according to Adrienne, as they tend to change with gradual growth. Basecamp Legal can help with keeping those important documents up-todate as your business sees steady growth, along with helping out with areas of compliance. Many growing companies also forget to draft employee handbooks and set regulatory policies to comply with state and federal laws, and don’t see the little legal hiccups they’ve made along the way. If this sounds familiar, Basecamp Legal can ensure that your operating agreements are in order and that you’re maintaining the correct HR files, and they can assist in establishing a trademark if you’re launching a

new branding effort. Maybe you signed an operating agreement years ago, and it was never updated. All of this, according to Adrienne, is included in their legal health check-up. If you’re a small to mid-sized business owner in or around Denver, Colorado, don’t hesitate to reach out to Adrienne at Basecamp Legal for the legal expertise to explore new avenues of growth. Her team can also lend a hand if you require outside counsel for M&A transactions, trademarks, real estate financing and agreement, business formation, or technology law expertise. Visit basecamplegal.com to browse their full range of legal services for growing Colorado companies, or call Basecamp’s office at (720) 552-5348 to reach Adrienne and her team directly.

Experience the Deep Colorado: the Scuba Capital of the U.S. ARTICLE BY ALLISON BANKSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CORAL KEY SCUBA & TRAVEL
Fear can hold you back from trying something new and exciting, but with the right support and training, you can work through those feelings and maybe even discover a new passion. Colorado has more certified scuba divers than any other state in the U.S., according to the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA), and Freddy Halcomb has had something to do with that. As the owner of Coral Key Scuba & Travel
in Arvada, he and his team provide training for those interested in learning how to dive or snorkel. Freddy says scuba is actually easier. “You can go down and stay, rather than continually going up and down, which wears you out quickly.” Freddy knows what he’s talking about and has worked in the industry since 1995. He was the youngest certified scuba diver in California at 11 years old, and

the skill runs in his family. “My grandfather was the first human to dive down 500 feet. I still have the helmet he used to make that dive.” Freddy also used his skills to serve his country, while he was in special forces in the Navy. Students who go through training at Coral Key Scuba & Travel first attend classroom sessions, then pool lessons, and, finally, open water dives. It helps to know how to swim, but even if you don’t, the instructors can help you learn. “I had one woman who came in to take classes. She got to the first pool session, put on her gear, and when she went in the water she just sank right down to the bottom and stayed there.” The instructors dove down and retrieved her. “She didn’t know how to swim!” Freddy says. “Talk about no fear! That woman diving into the water with no idea how to swim was the bravest thing I think I’ve ever seen.” That being said, Freddy can make sure you do know how to swim and that you feel confident in the water. Coral Key Scuba & Travel takes clients on about six big trips a year in groups of 12-20 people, and they go to places like the Carribbean, Fiji, Cozumel, and Roatan to dive together and have a blast. “We can match you up with a dive buddy if you want to go on the trip by yourself, and we also have a lot of couples or friends who go together.” Scuba does take some adjustments. “Human beings have an instinct to not breathe when their faces are under water.” Freddy says it’s a natural response. “That is part of our training. We help people get over that all the time. They become confident and comfortable under the water. Then the fun begins!” The shop keeps a significant inventory. In fact, Freddy says Coral Key Scuba & Travel has more items available than any other shop in Colorado. “We generally

don’t have to order things for people. We can take you right to what you need. We don’t sell. We educate. Whether you know what you’re looking for or you’re still learning, we can help you find the gear that’s right for you.” A sign in the shop states Diving is passion in motion. Freddy says he enjoys watching people learn to love scuba diving. “If people stay in the sport, they’re going to care about the oceans and the animals in it like we do and want to join in protecting it.” Freddy and his instructors are just people doing something they love and sharing it with others. “We’re here to guide people, so they have an awesome experience.” You can learn more and sign up for training at coralkeyscuba.com or call 303-431-5911.

Conquering the
Cold The right protection for your hands

G E A R GU ID E | LOCAL SERVI CE S
ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HESTRA Although the weather here in Arvada will be warming up in the coming months, spring in Colorado has a tendency to wax and wane to lower temperatures on occasion. Furthermore, the cold winters year-by-year call for clothes that can effectively conquer the cold, especially when it comes to the gloves you wear. Whether your children require a pair of custom-fitted gloves to keep them comfortable, or your laborious handiwork calls for sturdy goat skin, Dino Dardano of Hestra Gloves has your outdoor solution. Hestra Gloves was founded in 1936 in Hestra, Sweden, when Martin Magnusson noticed a dire need in his country for high-quality gloves that would withstand harsh lumberjack work. Since its founding, Hestra has added four distinct product lines with varying functions: a line of ski gloves, a collection of sport gloves, a fashion line featuring prestigious leathers and cashmere linings, and Hestra JOB which is the company’s line of gloves designed strictly for hard labor. The Hestra organization is starting on its fourth generation of family owners with the Magnusson sons and grandsons now managing the company and Anton Magnusson acting as CEO. Hestra offers gloves for men, women, children, and a variety of sports including biking, running, skiing, hiking, and climbing. Their luxury line, or Dress collection, is full of premium leather, suede, cashmere, and knitted products. Maybe you’re searching for a pair of children’s gloves to prepare your young one for an upcoming camping trip, skiing excursion, or to simply keep their hands cozy on frigid school days. Whatever your need may be, Hestra offers glove sizing for all ages from infants and toddlers to juniors. You can find their children’s options in the Collections section of their website, which features a number of additional product lines for sports such as alpine racing, mountaineering, and cross country skiing, as well as seasonal fashion gloves such as “Sport Classic” and “Table Cut.”

“Quality is built into every product, whether it’s meant for adults or for children.” -DINO DARDANO
According to Dino Dardano of Hestra’s North American division, “Quality is built into every product, whether it’s meant for adults or for children.” He also highlights their Hestra JOB product line. This is a newer division that had strayed away from the needs of manufacturing workers. The company recently went back to its roots of making “gloves for working people” as they were originally geared toward lumberjacks. Since they revived their foundational working glove, the company has been quite successful in raising the bar on quality when it comes to work gloves that can stand the test of time. In 2004, Hestra Gloves began distributing their products to North American markets in Canada and the United States. It’s an international company that also caters to European markets, including the countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway, Germany, Sweden, and the UK, though a majority of Hestra’s staff resides in Arvada. This is

part of the reason why Dino relocated their operations from Golden to Arvada. They had an opportunity to build a new facility, and due to their love for the Arvada community, they plan on keeping their operations in Jefferson County moving forward. The company currently owns global factories in Hungary, Vietnam, and China. According to Dino, they’re a very vertical organization in terms of sourcing, design, and production. In other words, they control all assets of the value chain. Throughout their growth across Europe and North America, Hestra has made a name for itself as a maker of premium, top-notch leather gloves, and the company harvests materials from only the best sources. It’s also a sustainable organization, with the majority of its high end ski gloves featuring replaceable liners. Dino says the durability of the goat skin and cow hide used to make these gloves is so great the liners often wear out
before the shell. However, sustainability efforts are moot without spreading awareness. This is why Hestra educates its customers on the replaceable liners and encourages them to maintain their gloves to extend their life cycle and cut back on unnecessary purchases. If you’re on the hunt for a pair of hard wearing gloves that can conquer the cold, there are a handful of local outdoor shops in Colorado that carry Hestra products. Although online shopping has become the new normal, it’s suggested that you feel out the glove selection firsthand before committing to a purchase. You can find Hestra’s ski, sport, designer, and JOB products at Larson’s Ski & Sport in Wheat Ridge or at Powder7 and Bentgate Mountaineering in Golden. Stop by one of these local outdoor shops to try on a pair of Hestra gloves in person, or visit hestragloves.us to browse the options before adding anything to your cart.

Oil on Canvas from Sharp’s Collection
If you are not planning to ski Taos, spring and fall are the ideal seasons to visit this town at the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Moderate temperatures optimize your time to explore main attractions: the Taos Pueblo— the oldest continuously inhabited Native American community, the historic art scene, and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge National Monument. Taos is less than a five-hour drive from Arvada. While indigenous people have lived at the Pueblo for over 1,000 years, few settlers resided in Taos until the Taos Society of Artists was established in 1915, just three years after New Mexico achieved statehood. To this day, the town’s natural surroundings continue to attract artists. Like Santa Fe, art stores and small museums are ubiquitous.
TAOS PUEBLO While some prefer to wander around the Taos Pueblo, both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark, I recommend joining a group tour. Our guide used his personal experiences to discuss the Pueblo’s history and what it was like growing up in the community. After being surrounded by modern conveniences, I struggled to connect with the small number of indigenous people who choose to live inside the walled area living without electricity and indoor plumbing. One cannot help but admire the resiliency of these indigenous people who were continually besieged by outsiders. Our young guide’s parting words reflect his people’s inherent tenacity. “We are still here. We are culturally strong people who have preserved our culture and are willing to pass it on to the next generation.” Before planning a visit to this incredible place, please check the Taos Pueblo website. Festivals, special occasions, and COVID policies may restrict visitation times.
TAOS SOCIETY OF ARTISTS At the beginning of the 20th century, the Taos Society of Artists was formed by Bert Phillips, Ernest Blumenschein, Oscar Berninghaus, Joseph Sharp, E. Irving Couse, and Herbert Dunton. This artist colony lasted until 1927. Nearly a century later, the region remains a magnet for artists. Numerous museums highlight various aspects of the town’s history.
COUSE-SHARP HISTORIC SITE At the Couse-Sharp Historic Site, we stepped into the shoes of E. Irving Couse (1866-1936) and Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953) by learning their perspective on Native American art. Sharp is best known for his paintings of Native American subjects and his chronicling of the vanishing West. His works are housed in his first Taos studio, a converted chapel. From 1891 to his death in 1936, Couse created almost 10,000 photographic images of Taos Pueblo models. Sharp is considered the “spiritual father” of the Taos Society of Artists, and Couse was the organization’s president for the first five years. The Couse home is decorated with original furnishings and personal items. The studios are frozen in time. They appear as if the artist has simply taken a momentary break. This site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
TAOS ART MUSEUM AT FECHIN HOUSE Nicolai Fechin (1881-1955), a notable Russian born artist, is remembered as an award-winning 20th-century portrait painter as well as a painter of Native Americans and desert landscapes. He emigrated to the U.S in the 1920s when the situation in Russia was deteriorating. In Taos, he enlarged an eight-room adobe home into a magnificent 4,000 square foot house. When his marriage ended in divorce, the five-year project had not yet been completed. Nicolai left Taos with his daughter while his CONTINUED >

ex-wife stayed behind. When the home was completed, it had the first electric stove, oven, and refrigerator in town. Decades later, the Fechin home remains an incredible masterpiece, filled with a mixture of Russian, Spanish, and Pueblo architectural styles and Russian, Siberian, European, Art Deco, and Native American elements. In 1979, the Fechin house became part of the National Registry of Historic American Homes and the State of New Mexico Registered Cultural Properties.
RIO GRANDE GORGE BRIDGE NATIONAL MONUMENT The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge National Monument was established in 2013 during the Obama administration. At
that time, 97,000 hectares adjacent to the Rio Grande were designated as protected land. Lovers of bridges and nature will be pleased with the photographic images taken of the seventh highest bridge in the U.S. and the miles of trails running along the 800-foot gorge which reveal layers of volcanic basalt flows and ash. Had our trip been longer than a couple of days, we would have visited a few more historical sites. Here are a few other attractions to consider: Harwood Museum, La Hacienda de Los Martinez, the Governor Bent House, the Kit Carson Home and Museum, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, the Ernest Blumenshein House, and the Millicent Rogers Museum.
D I S C LO S U R E : The Waite Company hosted the Traveling Bornsteins stay in Taos. They received a complimentary stay at the Historic Inn, complimentary tickets for the trolley which included the tour of the Pueblo, and admission to the two museums.
