Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let home be a place where we build each other up and support one another. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our focus. Be truly present when spending time with our families instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do lists. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless of whether our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

For home privacy without sacrificing your home’s aesthetic appeal, Blindsmith, Inc. is here with the blinds and shadings for every room. Arvada locals, Lori and Jeff Lipker, are proud owners of a business that has been serving Arvada for nearly a quarter of a century. Blindsmith offers the full line of Hunter Douglas products featuring PowerView Motorization for whole-home automation, as well as cleaning and repair services for their loyal clients. In Lori’s professional and trusted opinion, the Hunter Douglas Duette® Honeycomb Shades are the most popular and preferred option among her clientele. They flaunt an energy-efficient design with a healthy selection of fabrics, colors, pleat sizes, and textures. Blindsmith is also popular for their Hunter Douglas Silhouette® Shadings, according to Jeff. He says they provide pleasingly soft light while keeping your privacy intact. The Silhouette® shades, as well as the Hunter Douglas Pirouette® and Luminette® shades, are all made locally in Colorado. For a minimalist aesthetic, the experts recommend roller and solar shades which add another layer of privacy to your living quarters. These shades come in two styles: screens and roller shades. Screens feature opacity ratings to let you customize how much light can be filtered. Roller shades come in either opaque or semi-opaque versions that tend to be more design-oriented with a sleek appearance. If you’re searching for shades with a soft fabric look while retaining the easy-to-use nature of traditional shades, look no further than Jeff and Lori’s Roman shades by Hunter Douglas. Blindsmith carries the Vignette®, Solera®, and Design Studio® Roman Shades, with plenty of fold styles, sizes, and fabrics depending on your style preference. Check out the Vignette® Roman Shades for an easy-to-clean option, and the Solera® shade has a design allowing for a warmer home during the cold months and cool evenings in the summer. Lastly, those with interior design at the top of their minds may sway toward the Design Studio™ Roman Shades for their wide selection of styles, use of luxury fabrics, and even a collection by renowned New York designer Rebecca Atwood. Blindsmith is also popular for its cleaning services. Customers can bring shades into the shop when they need a touch-up. The shades receive an ultrasonic cleaning in a tank with mild detergent, using temperature-specific fluid based on the type of shade. After the cleaning, washing, and rinsing processes, shades are hung up to dry in their natural form. Once clear of moisture, Blindsmith specialists bag them up for pick-up or delivery straight to your home. The staff at Blindsmith will even hang them up for you to ensure your window coverings are properly placed. Repairs are a major part of Jeff and Lori’s operation, as well, and they are carried out in the same fashion as their cleaning services. To repair your broken blinds or shades, simply drop

Once Blindsmith has finished the repairs, your blinds or shades will be ready for pick-up or returned in a prompt and timely manner. It’s no wonder the company’s online reviews are barely short of flawless. Blindsmith hosts a full showroom to give potential customers a feel for their products before committing to a purchase. All the shades available in the showroom come motorized, or powered, which adds a touch of modern convenience along with privacy depending on your choices. The Arvada couple says they have seen an uptick in demand for their services since the Marshall Fire in late 2021 and through the beginning of January 2022. They have cleaned a lot of blinds and shades caked in soot from smoke. As a small business operating within Colorado, the Blindsmith staff is more than happy to offer their supportive hand through these services. Since the duo offers a number of Hunter Douglas home products, with other items and services, it’s best to browse their website to get a feel for their shades, blinds, and automated solutions. On the morning of December 30, 2021, grass fires broke out in Boulder County. Two blazes were identified and named by authorities as the Marshall Fire and Middle Fork Fire, creating a horrific hurricane of flames, known together as the Boulder County Fires. Middle Fork was quickly contained, but the massive Marshall Fire caused tremendous, heartbreaking damage. A humid spring with above-average grass growth, followed by a hot summer and dry fall created treacherous conditions. Severe winds with gusts of 115 miles per hour rapidly spread the fire, engulfing homes and vehicles in Louisville, Superior and Boulder, leaving those communities deeply scarred. More than a thousand residential structures were destroyed, and several more were severely damaged. Less than twelve hours after igniting, the blaze surpassed the 2013 Black Forest Fire as the Centennial State’s most destructive. In response, Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency on the day of the outbreak, and evacuees had to wait in agony over the fate of their homes. PuroClean touches the lives of people who have been devastated by catastrophes. The company is a leader in property damage remediation, helping families and businesses overcome horrific setbacks caused by water, mold and fire. “We started getting calls on the 31st, the day after the fire, and we’ve done about 350 assessments since,” says
Chris Schatz, general manager and owner. Schatz is a former EMT and fire fighter with a degree in fire science. He has been at the helm of PuroClean Broomfield for two years. “We’re still getting calls related to the Marshall Fire, weeks later.” The PuroClean team is there when people are working to recover from some of the worst ordeals of their lives. “We moved a customer on a Saturday into a rental because of fire damage to his home, and he was very appreciative. We’re doing smoke remediation for him. We cleaned his contents and possessions and then helped him move,” Schatz says. “It took all day, and he was extremely thankful. My 18-year-old son helped, as well. There’s been a lot of gratitude for the restorative work we’ve done in response.” “Chris Schatz and the PuroClean team have been thoughtful, thorough, and patient, answering any and all questions we’ve had during this stressful time of smoke mitigation,” says customer Peggy Morgan. “We think so highly of him and his team. Having worked on a previous project with him, he was our first call, and we have since recommended him to others going through the same situation.” “We have customers who think very highly of us,” adds Schatz. “I’ve truly formed bonds with some of them. There’s been a lot of resounding positivity reacting to what we’ve done, in light of trials and tribulations.”

“Chris Schatz and the PuroClean team have been thoughtful, thorough, and patient, answering any and all questions we’ve had during this stressful time of smoke mitigation.” - Peggy Morgan, Customer It’s clear Schatz is passionate about the high quality of his company’s sanitation and decontamination methods, and he stresses the concept of servant-leadership. “Our employees are trained and skilled. We empower them. I take it as a personal compliment whenever we’ve had a customer (say they) wish they’d simply called us first.” We asked Schatz what three values define PuroClean Broomfield. Schatz says, “Integrity, trust and image. Your business is nothing without integrity, and you’re going to get nowhere without trust. Your customers
have to have faith that you are going to do right by them. Finally, image: how we present ourselves to our customers is important for building any trust in the first place. We want to uphold a great standard, having our trucks immaculate and clean.” As a whole, Schatz says it comes down to putting people first. “The whole thing is, we believe in doing the right thing for our customers.” For more information, visit the PuroClean website at puroclean.com or call 720-773-3400.

Home Away from
Home CHICAGO 22
T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L
The Chicago River
For more than two decades, I have called Colorado my home. However, each time I return to Chicago, memories of my youth along with recollections from adult living in the city and suburbia resurface. No matter how long I reside elsewhere, Chicago will remain my home away from home. It is impossible to detach from the comfort level associated with one’s first few decades of life. When the plane’s landing pattern reveals the magnificent Chicago skyline, I often recall the plethora of notable places that no longer exist, along with the locations that have withstood the test of time. While Riverview Amusement Park, Fritzel’s, the Pickle Barrel restaurant and Second City in Old Town, Marshall Fields, and the Chicago Stadium have disappeared, most of the city’s major landmarks and attractions have endured. While some of these staples of Chicago remain vibrant, the neighborhoods surrounding these edifices have in most instances changed over time. This mixture of old and new reminds me that Chicago and its suburbs continued to evolve long after my family relocated. When my husband and I have returned to Chicago to celebrate family milestones, we have traveled with our adult children and our grandchildren. These multi-generational gatherings have allowed us to see Chicago through the next generation’s eyes. Their experience as Denverites traveling by airplane to visit a major American city is very different from my experience commuting by car or train into the city. Even though the 45–60 minute commute felt like an eternity as a child, I remember visits to the Art Institute, the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Shedd Aquarium, the Museum of Science and Industry, Grant Park, the Magnificent Mile, and the Field Museum. As young parents, we passed down these experiences to our four sons. As non-residents, our sons will slowly introduce these places to their children. Chicago’s towering skyscrapers are in a totally different league compared to Denver’s less impressive skyline. Growing up in suburban Chicago, I assumed that all cities had mega downtown areas filled with state-of-the-art museums, major sporting teams, and culinary treasures.

LIFE IN 2022 FAVORS A MOBILE SOCIETY WHERE PEOPLE HAVE MORE CHANCES TO RELOCATE AND TO TRAVEL.
Grandchildren enjoying the fish at Shedd Aquarium
Chicago Lincoln Park Zoo
Shedd Aquarium in Chicago
As a child growing up in the Chicago metro area, I never imagined the possibility of living elsewhere. Back in the 1960s, travel opportunities tended to be expensive and limited. When I attended the University of Colorado in the 1970s, most of my peers attended college in Illinois. College students often returned to their hometowns after graduation. Without the advantages of modern technology, letter writing and landlines were the main ways to keep in touch with relatives and friends. People were less inclined to sever family ties. Life in 2022 favors a mobile society where people have more chances to relocate and to travel. Home bodies continue to relish the safe confines of their familiar turf, while avid travelers are more open to stepping outside their comfort zones to explore distant places. But most would agree that if they return to a place where they once lived for an extended period,
there is a sense of security that does not evaporate. This inseverable attachment is rooted in the memories associated with the location along with the ability of going from place to place with minimal fear of getting lost. When travel involves negligible effort, you naturally feel at home with your situation. Disappointingly, the pandemic constrained our ability to visit Chicago as often as before. When we returned last spring, we spent most of the time catching up with family and friends. To accomplish this, we remained in the suburbs. The rekindling of in-person encounters added another layer to the home away from home feeling. It’s hard not to feel at home when surrounded by people who you have known for decades. The remainder of our time was spent walking around Highland Park, my childhood home, and driving in Northbrook,
the city where our children attended public school. While retracing steps, my thoughts were consumed by a constant barrage of past events and experiences. Each place was tied to a series of memories. After a week, I was ready to return to Colorado. On the way to O’Hare International Airport, the words from My Kind of Town popped into my mind. Frank Sinatra’s voice was singing the verse, “Each time I leave, Chicago is tugging at my sleeve.” Instead of agreeing with this outlook, I shook my head. Immediately, I recalled John Denver’s song, “I Guess He’d Rather Be in Colorado.” Like the subject of that song, I prefer Colorado. More than two decades after discarding my suburban Chicago existence for a life filled with Colorado sunshine and outdoor adventures, Chicago may be my home away from home but not where I call home.

Are You Covered the Way You Think You Are? INSURANCE TIPS WITH COUNTRY FINANCIAL
ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY
For many of us, insurance policies for the home, auto, and life are just more stacks of paperwork to sign and date. After hearing two local insurance agents’ sentiments on home protection, life insurance, and the recent Marshall Fire, those stacks of paper seem exponentially more important to review and fully understand. To break down what should be included in your insurance coverage, we talked with Andrea Romero and Katie Lorsbach of Country Financial. We started by asking them what the core role of insurance is. Speaking of the Country Financial Representatives, Andrea says, “(We) make promises to make you whole again and uphold that promise time and time again.” Their value proposition is to

ensure that their clients are properly covered, with a promise of high value to separate themselves from the stigma of cheap insurance providers. At Country Financial, Andrea and her colleagues understand that their job is to educate and make sure there are no gaps in coverage. Andrea and Katie recommend asking yourself whether you are properly covered, and they suggest doing insurance reviews at least once a year. Are there any gaps in your coverage? Is there enough dwelling coverage to rebuild? Are your valuables such as jewelry and guns covered? Are you aware of whether your auto insurance is full coverage or liability? These are the questions that so often push people to take their insurance seriously. Regarding life insurance, Andrea says it is always better to be prepared, rather than putting it off until you are already hurt or ill. She says, “You are never younger or healthier than you are today.”

She also mentioned the dependence on workplaces for health and life insurance rather than opting for the personal insurance route. Many Colorado residents who were displaced from their work throughout the pandemic lost their benefits along with their positions. That meant they had no life or health insurance in the face of a fatal event. With the instability of many businesses during these trying times, Andrea and Katie suggest you opt for personal insurance so that coverage is not dependent upon employment. The representatives at Country Financial understand that proper home coverage is not the same for everyone, which is why they host a number of coverage options to fit your personal needs. Take a look at Country Financial’s home insurance coverage levels on their website at countryfinancial.com, or give them a call at (866) 268-6879 to speak with one of their knowledgeable representatives.

WISDOM FROM A WEST + MAIN REALTOR
ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN MCNEIL
Since this is the Home edition of Arvada Lifestyle, we set out to ask a local realtor what it is that truly makes a house a home. Nicole Green is a realtor and broker associate with West + Main Homes, and our conversation with her evolved into a question of what combination of elements makes a home our own. Nicole says there are a couple of core components that lead us toward the “home sweet home” mentality: 1) the emotional response and comfort of a home and 2) the strength of the surrounding community. On the emotional side, a home is majorly defined by the inhabitants inside and how safe they feel living there. In this way, the community around you influences your comfort level. In a community as warm as Arvada, Nicole says her clientele of new couples, families, and pet-loving individuals are grateful to come home at the end of the day. She adds that now more than ever, our homes are our sanctuaries. We’ve been within our four walls for so long that many have either moved or renovated their living spaces in some shape or form in the past couple of years, due to the ongoing pandemic and the lockdowns which have followed suit. More and more people are deciding to work out of their home offices full-time, so the home is even more of an outward expression of who we are. From the decorations and furniture we love to precious artwork and color schemes, the house is ultimately defined by the residents inside. Nicole remarks how this is why we get so thrilled to invite our loved ones over for holidays, birthdays, or the Super Bowl. These occasions give us a chance to provide yet another reflection of who we are to the people closest to us. In terms of the community, Nicole makes the point that with most of us spending less time out and about, people are increasingly looking to their neighbors and community for that connection. It is a touching CONTINUED >

experience to walk around your neighborhood and kindly wave at your neighbors, confident that you’re all keeping a friendly eye on each other and maintaining a cohesive community. As you all know, Arvada is an extremely tight-knit pocket of Colorado with a culture-rich hub in Olde Town Arvada. Nicole mentions how her clients typically love the parades, farmer’s markets in the summer, and welcoming holiday atmosphere in the winter. For West + Main Homes, whatever will help their clients function happily and efficiently is what they strive to deliver, whether that’s a beautiful kitchen, a big yard, or a two-car garage. For realtors like Nicole, their job is not just to sell homes but to show families what a house could be. Regarding the vision for a home, Nicole says, “If the house has good bones, there’s always potential to make it your own. The important part is making memories and making it yours in the process.” As time passes and we settle into our homes, it’s apparent that the memories behind those front doors are what make a house a home. For inquiries regarding West + Main properties in Arvada and throughout Colorado, visit Nicole’s website at colecolorado.com or contact her directly at (303) 990-2094.
