With the changing seasons comes a difference in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages available in our area. We've had the pleasure of speaking with multiple chefs this month to see what they have planned for fall, and the culinary wizards in and around Arvada will not disappoint. Some of those chefs are also doing amazing work helping people in the community. We also have new ideas and recipes for you to try at home, whether you’re cooking for your family or entertaining guests. There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood kitchen table, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Food brings us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying great food is invaluable. Community Impact Forum on the Housing Conundrum

Arvada Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament

On August 19, 2022, the Arvada Chamber of Commerce hosted The Housing Conundrum at Revive Church. Attendees heard an overview of Community First Foundation’s Housing Study, plus updates on metro Denver housing challenges from a panel that includes Tyrone Adams (CEO, Colorado Association of REALTORS), Dieter Raemdonck (Lobbyist, Recht Kornfeld, P.C.), Senator Rachel Zenzinger, and Ryan Stachelski (Director of Community and Economic Development, City of Arvada).

The annual tournament featured 34 teams at West Woods Golf Club. The Adams County Government team finished in first place, led by Jim Siedlecki, Steve Uhl, Greg Bell, and Brian Biffle. In second place was the Colorado Home Realty team with Joe Seehusen, Matt Hudson, Brian Grace and Mike Cox. Professional Construction Services finished in third, with Lori Cupit, Dan Cupit, Chris Drake, and Josh Trujillo.

New Arvada City Manager The Arvada City Council has appointed Lorie Gillis as Arvada's next city manager in a unanimous decision. Current City Manager Mark Deven is retiring after 11 years of service to the community. Gillis has been Arvada's deputy city manager since 2014. Community, togetherness, and mutual support have created a bond among the businesses at The Square at Five Parks, and the glue that holds the group together is the locally-owned, property management company overseeing the complex, SFinvest. The Square at Five Parks is a carefully designed business complex built to serve the people who live at the Village of Five Parks. The Square is about convenience, style, art, great food and drink, and a sense of community–all within walking distance for nearby residents and a short drive for others. Even the open spaces between the five buildings on the property create an atmosphere of wonder with public art displays. Two courtyard areas feature bronze and stone sculptures, making it a lovely place to visit, as well as a great place to spend the day having a variety of experiences. The Square is across from The Depot, a building owned by the homeowners association for the Village of Five Parks. Everything is centrally located to make things easy and enhance the sense of connectivity. Fifteen businesses call the complex home, including restaurants, stores, and offices that provide medical, spa, pet care, and financial services. The Square also boasts nine loft apartments which all have open concept living spaces, private patios, wood floors, in-unit laundry, and access to other amenities. SFinvest is the family-run property management company behind The Square at Five Parks. William Sheridan is the president of the company and managing broker for The Square. Vice President of Marketing Brianne

Sheridan, is William’s daughter, and she is also the property manager for The Square. Brianne says the neighborhood hub is a cohesive, local shopping center. “We have a wonderful mix of businesses that truly serve the local area. Visiting the businesses at The Square is a surefire way to support local, small businesses and to find something everyone can enjoy.” SFinvest is a smaller property management company maintaining two complexes: The Square at Five Parks and the Broomfield Professional Campus. Brianne says much of their success comes down to the close relationships they develop with their tenants. “We put a lot of time and attention into the two properties, and we care about each and every one of our tenants.” SFinvest has been running the property in Arvada since 2020. “After we took it over, we updated the exterior paint, added new signage, upgraded all lighting to LED, and started a variety of other efforts and projects to make the property nicer for everyone,” says Brianne. SFinvest is also active with the Arvada Chamber of Commerce and donates regularly to local charities that serve the Arvada community. This month, Arvada Lifestyle is featuring the four food and beverage businesses in The Square: Marco’s Pizza, a.j.’s Deli, Jack’s & Steamers, and Five Parks Wine & Spirits. They are neighborhood staples frequented by locals, each offering unique tastes and products to entice you to try new things.

Jack and Athan Miller and their business partner, Scott Parker, opened Steamers coffee in 2007. In 2010, they expanded, launching Jack’s Bar and Grill and placing Steamers Coffee Shop in the same space. From the beginning, the owners were committed to hiring people with developmental disabilities, and at one point before Covid struck, they employed more than 70 people with developmental disabilities. Jack’s is known for its made-from-scratch dishes as well as some products you can buy for use at home such as A Different Kind of Jam–the restaurant’s line of gourmet specialty jams and jellies. They are all done in small batches, and Jack’s even works with other local companies on the flavors, such as a peach jam made with Stranahan Whiskey out of Denver.

The same owners who started Jack’s and Steamers decided to open a.j.’s Deli in The Square at Five Parks in 2021, utilizing a space they were already using as a prep kitchen and training area. The deli also employs many people with developmental disabilities. Co-owner Athan Miller says, “Some employees thrive in the fast-paced atmosphere of the restaurant at Jack’s/Steamers, while others prefer the slower, relaxed atmosphere of the deli. We find the right fit for everyone we hire.” Like Jack’s, Athan says the deli makes everything from scratch, concentrating on quality and using local ingredients and vendors. “We’re really proud to be part of the Five Parks neighborhood. It’s like a mini-city center in the suburbs.”

MARCO’S PIZZA

Owner Sam Nizam has more than 20 years of experience in the liquor business. He believes strongly in educating staff—both for responsible spirit sales and so they can guide customers to the best purchases for their tastes. “People have been so enthusiastic and appreciative of the investment we made in this community.” It’s a small store with more than 8,000 items, including unique products like alcohol-infused ice cream and local brews. “We get to know our customers by name, and we can special-order things for them, so they’re regularly available for purchase.” Sam is also working with vendors to plan fun tasting nights at the shop, so watch for those events! “Then we can introduce our customers to all sorts of new things.”

Marco’s is a staple in Arvada and a long-standing franchise with more than a thousand locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Steve Moberly is the Chief Operating Officer for La Tavola Hospitality Group which owns multiple Marco’s Pizza locations. He loves the neighborhood so much he resides in Five Parks. “It always has great energy, but that is from the people that enjoy and live in the area. I couldn’t pick a better place to reside and do business.” Marco’s gives back to the community with resources and charitable efforts associated with education and hunger prevention. The dough at Marco’s Pizza is made from scratch every day, and their cheese is never frozen. Marco’s is a long-time Arvada favorite for great pizza, subs, and unique pizza bowls.

Authenticity is everything to the staff of Teocalli Cocina, a Mexican restaurant with modern flair. “We offer culture, delicious food, and the laid back atmosphere in which everyone is welcome,” General Manager Jackie Ross says. Originally founded in Lafayette, the Arvada location opened its doors in February. Upon entering Teocalli Cocina, everything from the décor to the smell of the food tempts you to stay forever. Real plants adorn the restaurant while warm lighting adds to the inviting feel. Teocalli Cocina’s head chef, Julio Gaspar, says, “You don't want to leave as soon as you walk in.” Much of Teocalli Cocina’s authenticity comes from the experiences of Chef Julio. Raised in Oaxaca, Mexico, Chef Julio was first introduced to cooking by working in his mother’s restaurant by the beach. After leaving Mexico, Chef Julio worked at a variety of first-rate restaurants in the United States, from New York to the Malibu Pier in California. He attended culinary school for a short stint while in New York.

Chef Julio’s professional culinary experiences mesh with his background at his family’s restaurant to inspire his cooking at Teocalli Cocina. “I've been working with really good chefs my whole career. It’s a mix with everything, what I learned and what I knew already,” he says. Chef Julio makes an incredible, traditional mole at Teocalli Cocina. “People have told us it's the best mole they've ever had,” Jackie says. It’s just the right amount of sweet, spicy, and smoky. “It’s like we made it in Oaxaca. It’s a mole my mom used to make,” Chef Julio says. He uses chiles directly from Oaxaca that his brothers ship to him each month. The Arvada menu offers a vast selection of tacos, starters, enchiladas, and more. Start your meal with queso fundido or a pick-your-own salsa trio. For the main course, the carne asada tacos are a popular choice; they are packed with flavor and topped with hoja santa chimichurri, cheese crust, and smoked onion. My grandmother, who made the most amazing biscuits I have ever tasted, was my hero in the kitchen. She would labor all day on an amazing, comforting meal that we would gobble down in minutes. She used to say you can tell when a person cooks with love and from the heart. You feel it. You sense the passion and the intent, and my grandmother was right. Even before tasting his dishes, I sensed that same intent and heart from Chef Tajahi Cooke. Within a few minutes of conversation, I felt as though I had been given a gift. Chef Taj, as most folks call him, was born in Kingston, Jamaica and came to the U.S. when he was nine. His father was a tour manager for high-profile musicians, and Taj spent a lot of time on the road with his dad. “We used to come to Colorado, and I fell in love with the region. I dropped out of school when I was 18 or 19, unsure of what to do with my life.” Like many young people, Taj dabbled in lots of things. It wasn’t until he was sharing his grandmother’s recipes with his wife, Danielle, that he realized cooking brought him his true joy. Danielle told him, “You’re good at everything, but when you cook, you’re happy.” Taj tells the story of a party the couple hosted. He made what was supposed to be jerk chicken and habanero mash potatoes. “We had a gallon of milk, and that still didn’t

affect it,” he shared, laughing. “But our friends kept eating it. The flavors were there–you just had to get past the heat." Taj says when he started giving himself wholly on a plate everything changed. So much of Taj’s inspiration comes from his grandmother’s cooking, such as her curry made from scratch. “I matched the flavors, and now we have the blend of spices in the family again.” Taj recreated the dish so well, when his father tasted it, his dad was brought to tears. Chef Taj went on to sell the curry blend under the brand Ms. Betty’s Curry. Danielle is originally from Colorado. The loving couple works together on many projects that help others. That desire to improve people’s lives is at the core of everything Taj does. It feeds his soul as strongly and as vitally as oxygen fuels his body. Taj is the chef at the BKFST Club in Freedom Street Social and consulting chef for the food hall. He’s also one of the owners of Chef Kitchen. Through the Chef Kitchen Residency Program, Taj says each appointed chef spends a month showcasing their unique dishes while receiving mentoring. “It’s about improving the industry and providing opportunities people might not otherwise have as chefs early in their careers.” Taj strives to use his success to positively influence the industry. “I think we can do more

with the voice and the attention we receive, to impact our community in beautiful ways.” Both Taj and Danielle learned from a young age that giving back is important. Taj’s grandmother, Betty, was a midwife in Kingston, while Danielle’s aunts often took in at-risk youth, becoming second parents to more than 30 teens who otherwise did not have a stable home situation. This will be the 4th year Taj and his team will provide meals for people at Thanksgiving through Ms. Betty’s Harvest Madsgiving. In partnership with the Salvation Army, this year’s goal is to provide 10,000 meals. Food isn’t the only way their efforts reach people. Taj’s mother went to prison for drug trafficking when he was seven, and the neighborhood kids were cruel and tormented him over it. To lift his spirits, every holiday, his uncle would give him a great haircut. “It changed my energy, so now we do that for others.” Two brothers help with the free haircuts each year–Joey Romero who is the barber for the Colorado Rockies and owner of Crisp Barber Shop in Lakewood and Louie Romero, the barber for the Denver Broncos and owner of Fade Barber Shop in Arvada. Taj says money is never the biggest motivator. “I don’t believe we should live in our community and profit from it without bettering it. I’m just a kid from Kingston, a kid from the streets that my village raised. Most franchises, whether they be fast food joints or bakery chains, are uniform in nature. When you walk into a McDonald’s or Panera Bread, you know what to expect. However, the Great Harvest off Wadsworth Boulevard is anything but uniform thanks to the franchise’s soulful Freedom Franchise model. This was a crucial selling point when Aimee and Micki, a mother-daughter ownership team, first looked at creating a community-focused business: “We didn’t previously consider a franchise, because we wanted to cater to our customers our way. It’s tough to do that with most franchise models, but Great Harvest allows for that personalization. We’ve always wanted to work together, so this is perfect for us.” The ability to run a franchise without sacrificing the soul of the business is what separates Great Harvest from the rest, allowing its owners to serve their community in a truly unique way. In Aimee’s case, the Freedom Franchise model lets her cater to people who not only love the clean, high quality ingredients that Great Harvest is known for but also allows for guests that have special dietary restrictions. As owners who are both gluten-sensitive, Aimee and Micki have created a line of breads, goodies and make-it-at-home products that follow their mission to “bake phenomenal bread.” Bread types and menu items from Great Harvest vary from shop to shop. Some owners install cafes or only do bread and cookies. At Aimee and Micki’s location, you’ll feel at home among local artistry, handmade tea towels, locally-sourced peanut butters, honeys, and mustards. “We had a house full of pinball machines and a garage full of brewing equipment,” Tori Miller says about the origins of the brewery she started with her husband, Ryan. Tori, a Colorado native, jokingly told Ryan he needed to “get them out of there,” and thus, SomePlace Else Brewery was born. Five years later, SomePlace Else Brewery remains a bustling, charming “brewcade” for the beer aficionados, trivia fans, and dog lovers of Arvada. SomePlace Else isn’t called a “brewcade” for nothing. Pinball and skeeball machines elevate the establishment with character, individuality, and, of course, fun. Skeeball, the most popular, only costs a mere 25¢. Beyond arcade games, the brewery hosts

its own game of trivia every second and fourth Thursday of the month. Additionally, they draw a large crowd every Wednesday for a game of Euchre. Games give a twist on the traditional brewery, along with the fact that SomePlace Else is dog-friendly. Tori and Ryan have three dogs, themselves, and they encourage customers to bring their furry friends. Needless to say, the brewery prides itself on crafting delicious, high-quality beer. “We do a lot of small batches,” Tori says. A new beer is released every Friday, and a particular beer is never on tap for more than a couple months. One of the most popular ales is called Spock’s Brain IPA, a reference to Star Trek and a hint to the establishment’s quirky vibe. This best-selling ale, developed by current brewer, Alex, is hops-forward, juicy, and citrusy. Raspberry Cream Ale is another favorite of the SomePlace Else community. It features fresh raspberry puree; the brewery makes it a point to never use artificial extracts in their beer. SomePlace Else Brewery certainly is not limited to beer lovers. Hard seltzer is a great boozy option for those who are gluten-free or looking for a different flavor profile. They also offer local Happy Leaf Kombucha on tap in a variety of changing flavors for those who desire a completely non-alcoholic drink. Tori’s passion and inspiration for the brewery goes far beyond beer and games. “One of the things that is very important to us is to be involved in the community,” she says. SomePlace Else Brewery regularly throws fundraisers for a range of causes. They raised over $10,000 last year for charity. The brewery crafts special beers for causes and donates the proceeds. If you’re seeking an easygoing spot with great beer and culture, SomePlace Else Brewery is a must-visit. Pumpkin beer is coming out soon to celebrate the fall season, including a special pecan pumpkin flavor. Visit the brewcade on 6425 West 52nd Avenue in Arvada to try a pint, and play some games while you’re at it.

Pumpkin Smoothie Recipe It's pumpkin season, and that means everything from our coffees and pies to our candles will be releasing that amazing pumpkin scent. Here's an easy, healthy way to enjoy one of our favorite flavors of the season--a protein-infused pumpkin smoothie. There are so many fun variations of this drink, and you can choose to use protein powder or not, depending on what's best for you. I use sweetened, vanilla almond milk, but you can also use an unsweetened milk or milk substitute and toss in a sweetener of choice. I suggest using a high-speed blender like a Ninja, to make the drink extra smooth, but really any blender will do the job.

INGREDIENTS • • • • •

1 cup vanilla almond milk 1/3 cup pumpkin puree 1 banana 1 teaspoon peanut butter 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder (optional) • a handful of ice • a pinch of nutmeg • a pinch of cinnamon (+ extra to sprinkle on top)

INSTRUCTIONS Blend all ingredients together until the mixture is smooth. Serve in a glass and top it with whipped cream sprinkled with cinnamon. You can even throw some chopped pecans or toasted pumpkin seeds on top, if you like. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS • 8 ounces of @oshensalmon (skinned and cubed) • 2 tablespoons lemongrass root, minced • 1/2 cup shallots, minced • 1 tablespoon avocado oil • 1 1/2 tablespoons curry powder • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon Erythritol DIRECTIONS 1. Skin and cube the salmon 2. Toss all ingredients and salmon in a bowl until fish is evenly coated 3. Marinate for 1 hour 4. Brown on medium-high heat until crispy (rotate to make sure all sides are cooked evenly) 5. Serve with optional garnishes and sauces on-hand such as fresh cucumbers, tahini (I like @thetahinigoddess), or a peanut sauce. This treat can be eaten in nugget form or carefully put on satay sticks.
