LIFESTYLE LETTER
Celebrating Women I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who make life richer and more beautiful. Our wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives. And of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms. However, it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother-figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities; making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable. As I recall the women who have influenced me, my mother and maternal grandmother are a big part of who I am. I also think back to my third-grade teacher, Mrs. Harvey, who left a lifelong impression of genuine caring about her students. Above all, my wife has influenced me the most when it comes to caring, love, generosity and even in dealing with hardship. While it’s always important to support all of our local businesses and community members, this month being Women's Month is the perfect time to highlight the local women doing great things. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to our community’s women. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them. Thanks,

Karla & Co. MEET THE LOCAL BRAND DOING BIG THINGS ARTICLE BY ALEXANDRA JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID SHELLER
Karla Butvidas Karla Butvidas’ lights up when speaking about her clothing brand Karla & Co. The 35-year-old mother of two exudes genuine warmth and excitement, you just feel good around her. It’s no wonder her online t-shirt brand is wildly popular; it shares her same enthusiasm. In 2017 Long-time Cave Creek residents Karla and husband Bryan started the brand of affordable apparel and accessories from their home to have fun, be creative and most importantly represent Latino culture. Something very important to Karla who is Puerto Rican and says, “representing who we are brings more appreciation for diversity. Right now, I think many people aren’t aware just how much variety there is. Karla & Co. is a way to educate the people about Latino culture and breaking stereotypes.” Karla is the artistic force behind the line. Creating and designing digital imagery and text which are then printed on high-quality affordable t-shirts, hoodies, sweaters and sold online. The designs with fun tongue-in-cheek quips such as, I'm sorry, did I roll my eyes in Español? and empowering phrases like, Latina’s come in all shades have reached over 70,000 orders to date. It’s clear Karla & Co. has tapped into something special.

Pili Montilla and Karla Butvidas styled in Karla & Co. apparel.
“When One of Us Shines, We All Shine.”
What’s the secret to this success? Karla says it best, “we are all about spreading positivity, while representing and empowering people, especially those in the Latin community.” Karla & Co. is more than t-shirts. It’s a clever conversation between Karla and her audience. It is also a platform to engage in community outreach. In fact, Karla & Co. has recently partnered with ‘Latina’s in Tech’, a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect, support, and empower Latina women working in the tech sector. Through fundraising events LIT is able to provide resources, facilitate education, and foster the professional opportunities Latinas need to thrive, innovate, and lead in technology spaces. These exciting partnerships are a part of the vital force of the brand’s broader goal to expand into a global market. Which is why partnering with T.V. host, producer, podcaster, and all-around powerhouse Pili Montilla has been instrumental in driving the company into new corners of the Latina market. Pili’s is the brand ambassador and creative muse of sorts whose own unique style has influenced new colors, and designs. When asked about the value of such partnerships Karla says, “when one of us shines, we all shine.” The refreshing atmosphere of female collaboration is felt throughout the brand. From product designs, events, and a recent crowdfunding opportunity to invest in the growing company, Karla & Co. represents female empowerment at its best. Being a female-centered brand is very important to Butvidas the challenges that women and girls face, especially women of color, and envisions a world where they’ll have the opportunities, financial education, and freedom to pursue their dreams. Through creative design, community engagement, and collaboration Karla & Co. is a celebration of culture, women, and motherhood. Check out the full product line by visiting https://karlaandco.com, or follow @karla.and.co on Instagram to stay up to date on the latest events and ways to contribute.

MOTHER DAUGHTER TRIP! ARTICLE BY TRACY VAN RAVENSWAY
“Kids grow up so fast!”, says every parent with a teenager. And it is true. I happen to be one of those parents with two teenagers, both much taller than me now. They do grow up so fast and the time seems fleeting. Soon they'll be off to college, out of the house, and I just want to soak in all the moments before it happens. One of our favorite things to do is take short one-on-one trips. I have a son and a daughter, and I must alternate trips with them, or I will definitely hear about it. And the mother & daughter trip is up next, so we are floating around ideas. Here are some of our top trips you may want to experience with your teens. So, buckle up! We are going on a ride- with the top down! There are two local trips I have taken one-on-one with my kids that are sure to please. The first was to the Enchantment Resort in Sedona, AZ. Talk about beauty! This is a great place for you and your teen. There are many activities offered at the resort, such as swimming, tennis, croquet,
and bocce ball. But my favorite bonding time was on the hike. We went to the top of the trail and reveled in the beauty of the vortex. With 4 hours of hiking, it gave us lots of time to catch up. Not a hiker? Neither am I. So, if I can do it, so can you. It is great for all levels of hiking experience, or lack thereof. Looking to stay even closer to the northwest valley? This last recommendation is one of our favorites that we frequent. Drum roll please... the Marriott at Desert Ridge! All I have to say is “lazy river” and you will be hooked. It is the best lazy river in town and a perfect opportunity to bond with your teen. Hours of relaxation in a stunning resort with your favorite person by your side- does it get any better? And if you are not a lazy river person, there are many other activities to indulge in. Our next mother & daughter trip will be a big one! We are planning a three-generation trip with my mother, sister, and daughter. Stay tuned for that one!

Open House with a Stylist Take a tour of this Southwest Contemporary home
ARTICLE BY ALEXANDRA JAMES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK BOISCLAIR
While I'm the editor for our beautiful new Anthem City Lifestyle magazine, one of my other passions is Interior design. Since starting my interior design business in 2018, I have learned from some of the best and created beautiful spaces. Allow me to share with you one of my favorites, aptly titled the Desert Legend Project. The new homeowners were looking for the perfect seasonal home. They instantly fell in love with the south-facing views from this North Scottsdale territorial house. The interior was another story. The existing palette was dark beige, red and turquoise, a popular pallete which anyone living in the valley long enough knows well. Barbed wire encircled the kitchen pendants, heavy rope ensnared the vigas, the kitchen island was wrapped in leather and embellished with bullets. The overall look was kitschy southwest. Our aesthetic goal was to preserve the southwest feel with a light touch. I wanted the home to be cohesive with the region while maintaining a modern look. The style is
20

Southwest Contemporary. The Southwest style can be many different things. It can be the neutral and simplified geometry of now; sort of Joshua Tree meets Greece with a mid-century twist. Yet, for the Desert Legend house, we wanted to find that sweet spot between desert contemporary and historical southwest. The challenge was to weave together old with new to imply the American southwest in a sophisticated non-theatrical language. To begin, we neutralized the foundational palette by painting the majority of the interior Alabaster white and staining the natural yellow pine vigas and latillas dark walnut. Everything immediately began to feel calm and spacious. Next, we replaced the original floor tile with solid Hickory planks in varied widths to create a craftsman look. From here, I was able to build everything on top of this well-defined base. Starting in the kitchen, I went with two-toned black and white color scheme to get that shock of white while remaining integrated with the style.
The soft-white perimeter cabinets infused a modern lightness while the distressed black island anchored the look adding handsomeness. Because the island is on the smaller side, we topped it with 4" of solid walnut lending an authoritativeness. Polished Dakar quartzite caps the perimeter cabinets for a touch of modern elegance while delightfully contrasting with the textural lime-washed brick back splash. The furniture styling for the common area became the personality of the home. Custom and vintage pieces blend for a truly unique display. The sofa and chairs are designed with hand-selected fabrics and constructed by the talented team at the Furniture Ranch. Leather, hide, ceramic, wood, neutral textiles, and pops of red and black present a rustic and inviting aesthetic. From start to finish all the details of this design came together to create a one-of-a-kind southwest home. The mix of materials, colors, and textures, all work together to present our Southwest Contemporary look. For myself, the best part of this project was witnessing the joy the renovation has brought to homeowners. I can say without a doubt, this work is about enhancing the lives lived within. A special mention to Citywide Builders who did an incredible job on the construction. And a big 'thank you' to the talented tradespeople who made this vision come to life: Master Marble, Affinity Cabinetry, Tabor Designs, Restoration Hardware, Ferguson Plumbing, Az Tile, Villaggio Tile, Bedrosians, The Furniture Ranch, and more. If you have any questions about this project or would like to schedule a consultation, please visit www.alexandrajamesdesign.com.

Desert Hills Land Trust MEET THE INSPIRING WOMAN DEDICATED TO PROTECTING THE NORTH VALLEY FOOTHILLS ARTICLE BY ALEXANDRA JAMES
Protected Land of the Sonoran Desert
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID SHELLER PHOTOGRAPHY
“We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” – Native American Proverb. This philosophy is the heartbeat of Vicki Preston’s work with the Desert Foothills Land Trust. The DFLT Trust is a nonprofit organization actively working to conserve land through acquisition and stewardship. Vital work that protects the beautiful local landscape we all love so much. Preston who joined the land trust in 2011 as the conservation director became the president and CEO in 2016. And with the help of members, volunteers, and stewards Preston has helped to permanently protect nearly 1,100 acres on 29 preserves. Notably, at the end of 2022, the Land Trust in great partnership with Maricopa County and the Town of Cave Creek conserved 30 acres from development starting at the trailhead of the 2,200-acre Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Preston always knew she wanted to work with nature. Growing up in Northeast Ohio, near the shores of Lake Erie, is when her love of nature began. After working for local groups such as, the Grand River Partners Land Trust in Northeast Ohio, Preston came out west and fell in love with the Sonoran Desert. “The work we do is forever. When we accept a gift of land or a conservation easement, we vow to protect and defend that property forever. In other words, the land we protect today will be there for the generations of tomorrow.” The Desert Foothills Land Trust relies entirely on generous support from individuals, foundations, and grants. Wild Horses Dragged Her Away MEET THE WOMAN WHO LEFT IT ALL BEHIND TO RESCUE MUSTANGS IN THE ARIZONA DESERT. Have you ever thought about totally changing your life and going for that thing that sets your soul on fire? This amazing woman has done just that. Crystal Field sold her salon in Portland, Oregon in 2022, bought 27 acres in Pearce Arizona, packed her things, and headed to the desert to start a horse sanctuary. Moksha Sanctuary is a place for displaced horses to regain some of their freedom.”It’s not the thousands of acres they deserve, but it’s something”, Ms. Field says of her new venture as Horse activist. The land is flat, wide, and filled with scrubby brush. To most, it would be less than ideal - but to horses, it is heaven. As a young girl crystal could not have anticipated where her journey would take her. She first learned to ride on her family’s farm in Utah where her father bought her and her sisters horses for a fun summer activity. It wasn’t until years later after traveling the world and settling in Portland that Crystal’s love of horses resurfaced with the spontaneous sight-unseen rescue of a young CONTINUED >

Arabian horse from a kill pen. A kill pen is a holding facility for horses prior to euthanasia. Had she not acted, it is likely, the horse would have been shipped to an overseas slaughterhouse, as is the fate of so many wild horses. Unfortunately, there is a long-standing conflict between cattle ranchers and wild horse conservationists with no clear solutions. And despite the Wild Horse and Burro act of 1971, wild horses are routinely culled or rounded up to be sold at auction where very few make it to a place like Moksha Sanctuary. There are currently 62,000+ wild horses sitting in holding facilities in horrific conditions. Not a fate Crystal was ok with. Ms. Field’s mission to save horses became clear after learning about the plight of so many wild mustangs. She now sits on 27 acres of raw land with 12 rescued horses and counting. Most of Crystal's rescued horses have been separated from their families, pass through multiple facilities and often arrive traumatized and diseased. Upon arrival at moksha sanctuary, the horses are held in a smaller pen to be evaluated and then treated appropriately. Once the horses have received treatment and are healthy, they are released to free roam on the land. This is when their personalities shine. Crystal says despite what these horses have been through, they slowly learn they are safe and cared for at Moksha. After gentling, many of the horses at Moksha will be adopted by qualified people able to properly train and care for them. Many will remain at the sanctuary to live out their days. And some might become horse ambassadors and healers when Moksha officially incorporates equine therapy retreats. To learn more about Moksha Sanctuary visit www.mokshasanctuary.com.
