We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. Admittedly, I sometimes fall into the trap of believing the things worth doing are those for which a calculation of time, effort, and investment can be made. In other words, low risk high reward activities. However, the truth is that is an unfulfilling way to operate. We must leave room for the unknown. For exploring, trying new things, being a beginner, and- dare I say it- getting lost. In those unstructured open-ended moments space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered, and trust to be built. I remember being on a motorcycle trip to Yosemite National Park with 40 other riders. It was a beautiful day for a ride with a planned lunch once we reached the destination. The day before, we ordered food from a deli and picked it up on the way the next morning. As we approached our lunch spot it began to rain so we quickly pulled into the park. With rain gear in hand, we proceeded to the benches to rest and eat. Yes, it was raining, and typically this would be a disaster. Instead, we leaned into the moment. It was hilarious, us rough-and-tumble guys sitting in our rain-soaked gear shoveling food in as fast as we could before that was soggy too. It became an experience and a story to relive that always gets a laugh. Recently, I've been reflecting on how to make space for more of these unplanned moments to occur not only in my own life, but my family’s as well. These days, on top of our busy schedules, there is an over-abundance of content and entertainment to get lost in- some good, some not so good. Which is why it seems ever more important to shut off the screens, put the phone on silent, and reconnect to each other and the uncalculated. Our hope is that this issue inspires you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule, to lose yourself on a trail, book that trip you’ve been thinking about, and make time for the things that matter most to you. Or simply play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! Happy April!

Spend the Day in the City NEW DISCOVERIES JUST AROUND THE CORNER Do you like to explore? To visit places you’ve not yet been? To look for hidden treasures? Exploring can come in many forms. A person could travel to a foreign country, search for gold, or explore places in one’s own city. For me, exploring involves shopping. Anyone who knows me can attest to that statement. I encourage you to head south and explore the valley. And let me be your tour guide. First stop is the Biltmore located at 24th Street, between Lincoln Dr. and Camelback Rd. It is my “old stomping grounds” and where I used to live. The Biltmore area has shopping, restaurants, hiking, a beautiful resort, and more. At the Biltmore Fashion Park, you can further explore in a store called “My Sister’s Closet” for high-end clothing at lower prices. It truly feels like a treasure hunt.

The second stop would have to be the outdoor shopping centers Kierland and the Scottsdale Quarter. My kids and I love to go there for lunch and shopping. It is so pretty, especially during the holidays, and often features live events as well as unique shops. It is a fun to see what new boutiques arrive and a great place for the small kiddos to play in the fountains on those hot days. Are you looking for more vintage finds? I have two places you can explore. One is a semi-annual event called “Junk in the Trunk”. It is located at West World in Scottsdale. Junk in the Trunk takes treasure hunting to the next level. Explore 120,000 sqft filled with vintage finds from across the country. With food trucks, live music, and shopping you simply can’t go wrong! The third destination is at 7th Ave and Highland, where you’ll find exciting vintage stores like, my favorite, Sweet Salvage. Looking to spruce up your yard with some yard art? Cave Creek is the place to be. Peruse through the outdoor stores or stop at a restaurant for some good food. My favorite is Tonto Grill. I hope you find some treasures on your exploration of the valley. And if you are hungry for a treat when you head back north, drive further north to Black Canyon City for a yummy slice of pie at Rock Springs Café. Arizona sees roughly 41 million visitors annually. With that kind of attention, there is no denying our state is a massive tourist attraction. While nonresidents clamor to see everything this beautiful state has to offer, sometimes, those of us year-rounders need a reminder why Arizona is sought after. Maybe it’s time to pack up the car and head north, south, east or west. Because adventure, views, lakes, mountains, and wildlife are right outside our doorstep. And April, known for the emergence of gorgeous wildflowers and butterflies, is the perfect time to get out and explore! Consider taking a scenic drive to the authentic old western town of Oatman, located just off famous Route 66. There you’ll be delighted with many wild free-roaming burros, almost like friendly ambassadors to this quirky town. If that isn’t exciting enough, Oatman also boasts a hotel, mining museum, and western gunfight shows staged for your entertainment in the town center. Everyone loves the Grand Canyon but, try a new approach and take the train from Williams to the south rim. This course traverses land you’ve probably never seen. Wild mustang herds, expansive prairie, then the emergence of the majestic canyon- one of the most exciting geographic experiences. Go often to the Grand Canyon and you will see something new every time. It is grand after all. On the way to Sedona, stop by the less-visited Montezuma Castle National Monument in the Verde Valley. This is a fascinating collection of well-preserved dwellings by the Sinagua people, occupied over 1,000 years ago.

When you arrive at Sedona, you will be greeted by the famous and stunning red rock formations. You’ll weave into town on the busy roads with many tourists. Yet, what they might not know are the spots off the beaten path. Like the Briar Patch Inn, Indian Gardens Cafe, and the Pump House Station Urban Eatery and Market. If it’s stunning hiking and incredible geology you’re after, the Chiricahua National Monument might be the most incredible hiking and camping spot in the southeast corner of the State. There you will find hoodoos, which are rock columns and formations like natural pillars so unique they will leave you in awe. Mosey on up to Prescott and walk around the Courthouse Plaza, filled with shops, eateries, and plenty of events all year long. Visit the Hassayampa Hotel, where legend has it a resident ghost named Faith Summers roams the hallways and rooms at night. Although, not to worry, I have been to the Hassayampa many times and have never encountered her. If you haven’t spent much time in Flagstaff, spring is a great time to check it out- there might even be snow on the ground! Sip a cocktail at the historic 96-yearold Monte Vista Hotel which sits above an infamous and extensive tunnel system used for secret travel and suspicious activity during prohibition. From the hotel walk west on Aspen Avenue to the Lowell Observatory, where you can catch a glimpse of the solar system through the Clark Telescope. Whatever you are looking for, it is right here in Arizona. Dream. Discover. Explore.

Nestled among the rich landscape of the Sonoran Desert is an oasis for native wild animals. The Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center is open to the public and is a place of respite for injured, displaced, and orphaned wildlife. Their goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and release wild animals while educating the public on conservation and local wildlife. Animals who aren’t safe to return to their natural environment call Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center home and welcome you to come to say hello! The Conservation Center is currently located on 10 acres of private property in Scottsdale, with exciting plans to expand to a larger 25-acre facility as part of the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. When you visit the park, plan to spend two hours in the shade meeting a variety of native species including coyotes, bobcats, foxes, javelinas, hawks, owls, Sonoran desert tortoises, mountain lions, black bears, mule deer, coatimundis, and more. The Center’s tour guides are well-educated on the species and love to introduce people to the animals and share their stories. The Sonoran Desert is an especially spectacular place to celebrate Earth Day this year (April 22nd), as it is the most life-dense desert on the whole planet! The variety of unique plants and animals here is worth celebrating, enjoying, and preserving for future generations. The Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center is a non-profit organization that is able to rescue, rehabilitate and house native wildlife through generous donations and a dynamic team of volunteers who all share the same passion: saving wildlife, one life at a time. Is there a better way to explore than through food? Surely, no distance is too far for a savory top-tier dish. There are cities I will revisit just because there is a great eatery there. I still dream about the spring rolls from a noodle house in Victoria B.C. In fact, the last time I visited I departed the ferry downtown and went on foot directly to the restaurant practically following the aroma through the city. Not only will a great restaurant draw patrons from near and far, it has the potential to transform a city. It can put a city on the map so-to-speak and over time increase property values. Beyond the literal power of food, the sensorial experience is an adventure. The proper spice blend can transport you to

another region. An intoxicating aroma of a dish is able to take you back in time. Dazzling flavors will transform your mood and put a skip in your step. Phoenix metro has over the years made a name for itself on the culinary scene. For myself, whose family came to Phoenix in 1986, I’ve seen the food landscape completely change. From the familiar tried-and-true chains to independent artisanal haunts with delectable addicting culinary creations in every city. It’s exciting to see and experience. My list of new spots to try is always growing. Beyond the Valley Sedona, Prescott, and Flagstaff are also drawing a foodie buzz. Pack a bag, hit the road and make a day or weekend of it! 1. WHAT IS GRIND & GEARS AND WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN THEY VISIT? Grind and Gears is a one-of-a-kind bike shop, coffee shop and pit stop. We are unique because we are located in the town of Carefree on the south side of Cave Creek Road, a very popular bike path that leads way out to Seven Springs and beyond. So we built a back entrance and patio where cyclists can lockup their bikes and grab a drink or snack at our coffee bar. It’s a great place to rest, socialize, grab a quick tune up, and check out new gear. Whether you are a seasoned cyclist, looking for your first bike, or a day rental, we have everything you need. We take pride in our excellent service and quality products. Uniquely Grind & Gears is owned by Don and Lisa Little who also own and operate the local favorite Black Mountain Cafe. Both add a lot of value to our town of Carefree and the residents. The bike shop is an extension of the Littles’s hobbies and love of the local community.

2. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE BIKE TRAILS IN THE AREA. We are in the center part of a long very active cyclists ride route that runs along Cave Creek Road. And for mountain riders, we are right down the street from Browns Ranch, Spur cross trails, Apache wash trails, Cave Creek regional park trails.

3. ANY UPCOMING EVENTS PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT? We have started our Friday night Flyers event, which is a cyclist get together and ride. It’s a new event so all the details will come together. Essentially, it’s a group ride with like-minded active cyclists who want to ride together and share a few laughs and maybe a couple drinks.

When you think of Cave Creek you probably think motorcycles, saloons, and rodeos but there’s another vibe in town - the conscious healing kind. Amid the western shops and horse stables healing centers are popping up here and there not so much changing the landscape, but adding a new flavor to what we already love so much. One such business blazing this new trail is Holistic Hollow. Next to Mr. Gunz Firearms and Outlaw Lash & Brows, you’ll find Holistic Hollow Yoga Studio and wellness center. Motivated by a passion for teaching and healing, owner Nicole Haring opened the studio in 2021 with a monthly schedule of vinyasa yoga classes. Since then, the studio has gained a loyal following and is continuing to grow. They’ve recently expanded into a larger studio and started offering a wide range of services such as functional medicine treatments, workshops, and more!

Nicole Haring is a teacher, artist, and visionary with a mission to help people feel their best by providing tools to grow on their own. Wild Arizona Glimpse the Sonoran Desert Through My Eyes

There is a particular spot on the Agua Fria River where the water slips between narrow canyon walls, and you can hear water falling over stones. I have never met another person out there although I have seen footprints. You cannot get to this place with a motorized vehicle- you must go on foot. Over the past thirty-five years I have hiked all over Arizona’s peaks, valleys, and canyons. My adventures began as a young father when we purchased a home not far from Trail 100. At the time, I was a long-distance runner and in the early mornings, I’d slide on my running shoes and explore the desert. Over the next three decades, I ran every trail I could find. My adventures carried me to remote places often miles away from even a dirt road. I’d stop, listen in silence, look closely at my surroundings and burn the images onto my mind- knowing this must be what the old explorers felt. It was like finding a paradise without roads, cars, or technology. When I turned sixty and my knees gave out, the doctor said “osteoarthritis.” So, I exchanged my running shoes for hiking boots. Moving at a slower pace gave me a chance to notice details of the land: red-orange sunrises, old green saguaros, brown rocks, the beautiful shadows in a ravine. I searched for places found only on foot like a narrow canyon, a rocky peak, a tiny valley hidden by cactus. Along the way, I’ve met my share of wild animals. Over the

years I’ve crossed paths with rattlesnakes, coyotes, owls, and elk, yet never had any problems with them. Not once did I feel threatened by these animals because I knew that if I give them space and respect we would get along just fine. It saddens me now to see my beloved desert torn up by tire tracks and littered with bullet shells. Yet, over the years I’ve come to discover the desert is resilient- tracks wash away,

This primitive campground offers a scenic view of the San Francisco Peaks and dry camping in the cool aspen trees that surround Lockett Meadow.

Sycamore Canyon Wilderness encompasses the second largest canyon in Arizona’s red rock country and was designated a wilderness area in 1972.

The sun comes up and goes downwe don’t even think about it. Luckily there are incredible conservation groups like the Desert Foothills Land Trust which, at the end of 2022, in great partnership with

Maricopa County and the Town of Cave Creek conserved 30 critical acres from development. This property sits at the trailhead of the 2,200-acre Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. The Land Trust negotiated the purchase, and the Town and County provided the funds for it. The Town and County now own the land. And the Land Trust holds a conservation easement, ensuring its protection in perpetuity.

This is exciting news. The work that has been done means parts of this landscape that we all love so much will be preserved not just for a few decades, but forever. I, of course, won’t be around to witness this desert then but I sure am going to savor it now. It has been my privilege to explore this land and I am planning on doing it for as long as I can, especially at that wild and quiet spot on the Agua Fria.
