LOVING LOCAL

ARTS + CULTURE

AAHPS - DRIVEN BY THEIR LOVE OF OUR CITY'S HISTORY

F R O M L A N D At

T O L E G A C Y

Let’s talk about what your land c an become.

Rooted in Love, Strengthened by Community

Love is often spoken about in grand gestures, but its truest form is usually found closer to home. It lives in the everyday choices we make, to show up, to support, and to invest in the people and places that shape our lives. Loving locally is not a trend; it is a commitment to community, connection, and shared growth.

When we choose local businesses, attend community events, or simply take the time to know our neighbors, we strengthen the foundation of where we live. These choices create a ripple effect. Dollars spent locally circulate back into schools, charities, and small enterprises. Relationships built locally turn into trust, collaboration, and resilience during both celebrations and challenges.

Local love is also deeply personal. It is the familiar face behind the counter, the business owner who knows your name, and the organizations that sponsor youth programs and sports teams, and causes that matter. These are not faceless transactions; they are partnerships rooted in mutual care and accountability.

In a world that often encourages speed and scale, loving locally asks us to slow down and be intentional. It reminds us that community does not happen by accident; it is built through consistent support and shared pride. Every act of local engagement, no matter how small, reinforces the idea that our towns and cities are worth investing in.

Within these pages, you’ll find stories that reflect the many ways love shows up in our everyday lives. We highlight articles that celebrate loving life as it is through connection, purpose, and gratitude while also honoring a feature on the Anna Area Historical Preservation Society (AAHPS), whose dedication keeps our community’s story alive. You’ll also discover creative and meaningful ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day, offering fresh ideas that go beyond tradition and encourage readers to share love thoughtfully, locally, and authentically.

As a publisher, I am continually inspired by the stories of people and businesses who lead with heart and purpose. Their dedication proves that love, when practiced locally, has the power to sustain, uplift, and unite us all.

Warm regards,

February 2026

PRESERVING THE PAST, ENRICHING THE FUTURE: THE STORY OF THE ANNA AREA HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY

In the heart of North Texas, where growth and progress continue to reshape communities, the Anna Area Historical Preservation Society (AAHPS) stands as a steadfast guardian of local history. Dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the rich heritage of Anna and its surrounding areas, the Society ensures that the stories, landmarks, and memories that shaped the community are not lost to time.

Founded by a group of passionate local historians and preservation advocates, the Anna Area Historical Preservation Society was created with a clear mission: to safeguard the cultural and historical identity of Anna, Texas, while educating future generations about the people and events that built the town. At a time when rapid development can sometimes overshadow historical significance, AAHPS provides a vital balance—honoring the past while embracing the future.

A COMMUNITY ROOTED IN HISTORY

Anna’s story is one of resilience, connection, and community spirit. From its early days as a railroad stop in the late 19th century to its evolution into a thriving modern city, Anna has long been shaped by the dedication of its residents. The Historical Preservation Society plays a key role in documenting these transitions, collecting photographs, artifacts, oral histories, and records that capture everyday life across generations.

Much of the Society’s work centers on ensuring that history remains accessible and meaningful—not confined to dusty archives, but alive in shared stories, preserved buildings, and public programs. Volunteers and members work tirelessly to research local families, maintain historical records, and assist residents seeking to learn more about their roots.

PROTECTING LANDMARKS AND LEGACY

One of the most visible efforts of the Anna Area Historical Preservation Society is its commitment to protecting historic structures and sites. These landmarks serve as physical reminders of Anna’s journey through time, offering a tangible connection to the past. Whether advocating for the preservation of historic homes, schools, or civic buildings, AAHPS works closely with city leaders, property owners, and preservation experts to ensure these sites are respected and maintained. Preservation is not always easy. Aging buildings require funding, maintenance, and community support. Through grants, fundraising efforts, and public awareness campaigns, the Society continues to champion the importance of saving these structures—not just for their architectural value, but for the stories they tell.

Preserving a city’s history honors the people, stories, and moments that shaped its identity. By protecting historic places and traditions, communities create a foundation of pride, continuity, and character. Understanding where we come from helps guide thoughtful growth, ensuring future generations inherit not only progress, but a meaningful sense of place.

“A heartfelt commitment to safeguarding the stories, landmarks, and traditions that define the city’s enduring spirit.”

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

Education lies at the heart of the Society’s mission. AAHPS regularly hosts lectures, walking tours, exhibits, and special events designed to bring history to life. These programs invite residents of all ages to explore Anna’s past in engaging and interactive ways.

School partnerships are especially important. By collaborating with local educators, the Society helps integrate local history into classrooms, ensuring that students understand the significance of their hometown beyond textbooks. Oral history projects allow students to hear firsthand accounts from longtime residents, creating meaningful connections between generations.

Community events hosted by AAHPS often double as social gatherings, strengthening bonds among neighbors while celebrating shared heritage. From historical reenactments to heritage days and seasonal events, the Society creates opportunities for residents to come together around a common appreciation for their town.

VOLUNTEERS: THE HEART OF THE SOCIETY

Like many preservation organizations, the Anna Area Historical Preservation Society thrives because of its volunteers. These individual researchers, archivists, event planners, storytellers, and advocates—bring diverse skills and a shared passion for history. Their dedication ensures that projects move forward and that the Society remains an active presence in the community.

Volunteers often spend countless hours cataloging documents, restoring artifacts, and assisting visitors with genealogical research. Their efforts not only preserve history but also foster a sense of pride and ownership within the community.

“As Anna continues to grow, the role of the Historical Preservation Society becomes increasingly important. New residents arrive each year, drawn by opportunity and quality of life.”

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

As Anna continues to grow, the role of the Historical Preservation Society becomes increasingly important. New residents arrive each year, drawn by opportunity and quality of life. AAHPS helps bridge the gap between newcomers and longtime residents by offering a deeper understanding of the town’s roots and values.

Future initiatives include expanding digital archives, increasing accessibility to historical materials, and continuing advocacy for preservation-friendly development. By embracing technology and innovation, the Society ensures that history remains relevant in a modern world.

WHY PRESERVATION MATTERS

At its core, historical preservation is about identity. It answers the questions: Who are we? Where did we come from? And what lessons can we carry forward? The Anna Area Historical Preservation Society reminds us that progress does not require forgetting the past. Instead, honoring history enriches the present and strengthens the future.

Through its dedication to preservation, education, and community engagement, AAHPS serves as a model for how local organizations can make a lasting impact. Its work ensures that Anna’s story, shaped by hard work, tradition, and community spirit, continues to be shared for generations to come.

In preserving yesterday, the Anna Area Historical Preservation Society helps define tomorrow, proving that a town’s greatest asset is not only where it is going, but the history that brought it there.

Building the Perfect Bouquet

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.

USE THIS GUIDE WHEN ORDERING VALENTINE’S DAY BOUQUETS

Roses

LOVE & ROMANCE

Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.

Lilies

PURITY & FERTILITY

Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.

Tulips

PERFECT FOR DEEP LOVE

A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will complement the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.

A WONDERFUL COMPLIMENT TO A SPECIAL CELEBRATION

CLASSIC CHOCOLATEDIPPED STRAWBERRIES

Chocolate-dipped strawberries are an elegant yet simple dessert, perfect for Valentine’s Day, showers, anniversaries, or any occasion that calls for something special. With minimal ingredients and just a little time, you can create glossy, bakery-style strawberries that taste fresh, rich, and indulgent. This recipe focuses on proper preparation, smooth chocolate, and simple techniques to ensure beautiful results every time.

CHOCOLATE-DIPPED STRAWBERRIES

Ingredients

• 1 pound fresh strawberries

• 8–10 ounces high-quality chocolate (dark, milk, or white)

• Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, shredded coconut, or extra melted chocolate for drizzling

Directions

1. First, gently wash the strawberries and pat them completely dry with paper towels. Moisture will prevent chocolate from adhering, so take your time here. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

2. Next, chop the chocolate into small, even pieces. Melt it slowly

using a microwave in short intervals, stirring between each, or a double boiler over simmering water. Stir until smooth, glossy, and fully melted. Avoid overheating, which can cause the chocolate to seize and turn grainy.

3. Hold each strawberry by the stem and dip it into the melted chocolate, swirling gently to coat about two-thirds of the berry. Allow excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.

4. If desired, immediately add toppings while the chocolate is still wet. Place dipped strawberries onto the prepared sheet and refrigerate for 20–30 minutes, or until set.

For perfectly smooth chocolate, make sure strawberries are completely dry before dipping—even a drop of water can cause chocolate to seize. Use high-quality chocolate for the best shine and flavor, and melt it slowly. For extra polish, let dipped strawberries set at room temperature for a few minutes before chilling.

5. Serve chilled or at room temperature. For best flavor, enjoy within 24 hours. Store leftovers in a single layer in an airtight container and avoid stacking to keep the chocolate smooth, shiny, and beautiful.

6. These strawberries pair well with champagne, coffee, or dessert wine. For variety, drizzle contrasting chocolate, sprinkle sea salt, or chill briefly before serving guests a polished, restaurant-style treat that feels festive, romantic, and irresistibly homemade. Enjoy making them together and sharing with a loved one.

CELEBRATING

LOVE SIMPLY

Creative ways to celebrate love and connection on Valentine’s Day

Meaningful gifts don’t have to be extravagant. Personal touches show effort and care, making even the simplest gift feel special. Consider:

• A handwritten letter

• A framed photo

• A favorite treat or homemade craft

• A playlist of songs that reminds you of your connection

Small gestures like these create lasting memories and show your loved ones how much you appreciate them.

Shared experiences often create the most meaningful memories. Try:

• A cozy dinner at home

• A scenic walk or outdoor adventure

• A fun activity like a cooking class or game night

• Revisiting a favorite spot together

The time spent connecting and laughing often matters far more than any physical gift.

Focus on being fully present:

• Put away phones and distractions

• Enjoy a quiet evening talking or watching a favorite movie

• Share coffee, conversation, and laughter Even small, intentional moments can become unforgettable memories.

1. THOUGHTFUL GIFTS THAT FEEL PERSONAL VALENTINE’S DAY GUIDE
2. EXPERIENCES OVER THINGS
3. QUALITY TIME, UNINTERRUPTED

4. WORDS THAT MATTER

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to express what you may not always say:

• Write a heartfelt note

• Send a thoughtful message

• Speak your appreciation out loud Honest, specific words often carry more meaning than grand gestures.

5. CELEBRATING FRIENDSHIP AND FAMILY

Love extends beyond romance. Show appreciation for friends and family by:

• Hosting small gatherings or shared meals

• Sending a thoughtful text or call

• Performing simple acts of kindness These gestures brighten someone’s day and strengthen important connections.

6. SELF-LOVE AND REFLECTION

Valentine’s Day can also honor yourself:

• Take time to rest and reflect

• Do something that brings you joy

• Practice gratitude and self-care

Treat yourself with the same love and attention you give others.

7.KEEPING IT SIMPLE AND REAL

Focus on authenticity rather than perfection. Genuine gestures, big or small, are what make Valentine’s Day truly special. When love is expressed sincerely, the day becomes less about expectation and more about meaningful connection!

City Manager’s Monthly Update

As winter continues, Anna shines with neighborly warmth and community spirit. February is a month of preparation and anticipation as we look forward to spring while staying mindful of seasonal changes.

First, let’s talk safety. With freezes still possible, we encourage neighbors to stay informed. Subscribe to weather alerts and other emergency notifications via Hyper-Reach, Anna’s official automated telephone notification system. It is the best way to receive timely updates about freeze warnings, severe weather and other urgent notices.

This is also a great time to remember the 5 P’s:

• People – Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with limited mobility

• Pets – Keep them warm and safe indoors

• Pipes – Insulate and drip faucets during freezes

• Plants – Cover or bring them inside

• Pools – Keep pumps running to prevent damage

Now for something fun. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 28th, and join us for the Easter Eggstravaganza. This festive day will feature egg hunts, photos with the Easter Bunny, bounce houses, a DJ, food vendors, and more. It is springtime fun for all ages. Full details will be available on the City’s website and social media channels. Do not miss it.

Thank you for being an active part of our growing community. Together, we are building a city that is safe, vibrant, and connected. Whether you are preparing for the cold or looking forward to spring, Anna is here to support you. Let’s make this season one of care, celebration, and progress.

Loving Where Life Meets Purpose

Finding fulfillment through connection, purpose, curiosity, and community

There is a quiet kind of happiness that comes from loving who you are with, what you do, and the life you are building. It is not loud or flashy, but steady and grounding. It appears in those simple moments when you realize you are exactly where you need to be, surrounded by people and purpose that feel right.

Loving who you are with means valuing connection over perfection. It is appreciating the people who see you clearly, support your growth, and walk beside you through both ordinary days and life’s defining moments. These relationships do not rely on constant excitement to feel meaningful. Instead, they are built on trust, laughter, shared values, and the comfort of knowing you are not alone. When you love who you are with, joy is often found in simple conversations, familiar routines, and the deep sense of belonging that comes from genuine connection.

Loving what you do is equally powerful. Work, hobbies, and daily responsibilities shape so much of our lives, and fulfillment grows when those efforts align with purpose. Loving what you do does not mean every day is easy or ideal. It means recognizing the value of your work and taking pride in the dedication you bring to it. It is waking up motivated, knowing that what you contribute matters, whether you are building a business, supporting a team, creating something meaningful, or helping others along their journey.

Exploring new passions adds another dimension to that fulfillment. Life is not meant to remain static; curiosity keeps it alive. Trying something new, traveling somewhere unfamiliar, or stepping into a role that feels slightly uncomfortable can reignite confidence and excitement. New passions remind us that growth does not stop at a certain age or stage. They invite us to evolve, challenge ourselves, and discover strengths we didn’t know we had.

There is freedom in allowing interests to change. What once inspired you may no longer fit, and that is not failure; it is growth. Exploring new passions does not mean abandoning who you were; it means honoring who you are becoming. Each experience adds depth and perspective. Some passions become lifelong pursuits, while others simply offer lessons that quietly guide the next step forward.

Loving life also means loving locally and investing in your community. There is something deeply fulfilling about supporting the places and people that shape your everyday world. From small businesses and local organizations to schools, teams, and neighborhood gatherings, the community creates connection and shared identity. Choosing to love locally strengthens relationships, encourages growth, and preserves the character of the place you call home.

At the heart of it all is self-acceptance. Loving who you are with and what you do begins with knowing yourself. It means recognizing your worth without comparison and understanding that your journey does not need to look like anyone else’s.

When you accept yourself, you create space to choose relationships, work, and passions that truly align with your values.

Balance plays an important role as well. Loving life does not require constant productivity or achievement. It includes rest, reflection, and the ability to be present. Taking time to enjoy where you are rather than rushing toward what’s next allows gratitude to grow.

In the end, loving who you are with, what you do, and the passions you explore is about intention. It is choosing fulfillment over expectation and meaning over pressure. When life is guided by connection, purpose, curiosity, and community, it becomes something you don’t just live but genuinely love.

Emory Medina | Anna HS

It is with great pleasure to announce Emory Medina as the Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Month, as selected by the Anna Independent School District Athletic Coaching Team.

As a senior, Emory approaches her final year of high school with a thoughtful mindset and a clear sense of purpose. Biology is her favorite subject, as she enjoys learning about living systems and the science behind how the human body functions. Her favorite color is purple, which reflects her quiet individuality.

While she doesn’t have a favorite sports team and doesn’t spend much time watching television, she brings strong commitment and leadership to the activities she cares about most. One thing that might surprise people is that, beneath her calm and friendly exterior, she is an overthinker and more reserved than initially appears. That introspective nature helps her connect meaningfully with others.

This year marks her fourth season as a varsity softball player, a sport that has shaped much of her high school experience. On the team, she is known as someone who welcomes new players, helping them feel comfortable and confident as they find their place. Her leadership extends beyond the field through her involvement in Student Council and the National Honor Society, where she contributes to her school community in meaningful ways.

Among her accomplishments, earning a place in the Top 10 reflects her dedication to both academic and personal growth. Looking ahead, she plans to make her senior year as impactful and memorable as possible. After graduation, she intends to study neuroscience in college, with the long-term goal of becoming a scientist who helps people in need through research and discovery.

Congratulations to Emory and her selection as the February Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Month!
