LOV I NG MONTGOM ERY COUNTY V IRGI N I A

WHERE COLLEGE TOWN CHARM MEETS THE MAGIC OF NATURE AND HISTORY. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY VALERIE SHEPHERD

As a busy mom looking for a quick getaway from Atlanta, it felt a bit unfair I was going without my college-searching son to Montgomery County, Virginia—home to Virginia Tech. What I was hoping would be a chance to experience a little energy, artistic creativity, history and a hike (or five), turned into experiencing the kind of place students and locals, as well as previous Hokies move back to because of its charm and allure. Tucked between the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains, this region isn’t just stunning - it’s full of everything for a revitalizing getaway. The minute you arrive, you can feel the heartbeat of a vibrant college town (think cozy cafes, antique shopping, botanical gardens) surrounded by natural beauty and a rich history.

The writer in her natural habitat - traveling!

So if you have a weekend (or more!) I highly suggest the following: WHERE TO SHOP If you’re a fan of unique finds, local charm, and Insta-worthy shots in every corner, then Montgomery County shopping has your name written all over it. In Christiansburg, Cambria Station Antiques and Old New River Books is a must-see. There’s a giant arch made of vintage books housed in a historical general store - it’s a treasure trove of vintage must-haves, rare books and amazing nostalgia. Over in downtown Blacksburg, Sugar Magnolia is about as cute as they come. It’s the kind of place where you can browse stationery and gifts that make your soul sing with an ice cream cone in hand—and yes, they serve that too as well as handmade chocolates! If there on a Saturday morning, Blacksburg Farmers Market is a visual and sensory treat! It checks all the boxes for buying and shopping local with a producer who comes from no more than 50 miles away. WHERE TO EAT Foodies, prepare to be wowed. From little cafes to star-worthy dining, Montgomery County knows how to feed you. Start with sushi and ramen at Hefun, in downtown Blacksburg, and for a laid-back lunch, head to Cabo Fish Taco, set in one of the town’s historic buildings but has amazing outside seating. Their “Banging Baja Tacos” are worth the trip alone. If you’re in for a rustic vibe with bold flavors, The Blacksburg Tavern offers Appalachian comfort food served in one of Main Street’s oldest homes (with gorgeous paintings!) Think out-of-thisworld fried chicken, brisket, and cornbread served family style. Round it all off with a short trip to The Blacksburg Wine Lab—co-founded by a Virginia Tech professor, it blends wine education with savory sips and stunning views of farm country.

perfect base for exploring the area and soaking up the college town energy. WHAT TO DO This region is packed with ways to get moving and be inspired. Start your day with a peaceful walk around Pandapas Pond or explore the miles of hiking and biking trails in Brush Mountain Park, a protected area of the Appalachian. Don’t miss the Hahn Horticulture Garden, a six-acre paradise on Virginia Tech’s campus, or a visit to the Moss Arts Center for art exhibitions and performances. History lovers will appreciate Historic Smithfield, which weaves together the stories of early America, and the Montgomery Museum of Art & History. And for something truly unique, time your visit to coincide with the Sinkland Farms Pumpkin Festival in the fall. With live music, local vendors, cows, games, art and giant pumpkins galore, there’s a reason why it’s ranked the top in the Southeast! WHEN TO GO Spring and summer bring vibrant greenery and perfect hiking weather but, in my opinion... fall steals the show! Think bright foliage, perfect weather, Hokie football, pumpkin patches and wine tastings in full swing or enjoying a scenic drive through the mountains. Puerto Vallarta for Grown-Ups

VILLA PREMIERE BOUTIQUE HOTEL ARTICLE BY DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

When it came to answering my body’s call for a relaxing getaway, I headed across the border via a direct flight to Mexico’s Puerto Vallarta, nestled along the Pacific Ocean coastline, destined for one of the standout resorts in the country, Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel. While Villa Premiere remains a consistent award-winning romantic getaway, I traveled alone still indulging in its hospitality, luxurious amenities, authentic cuisine and adultonly designation. Flying directly to Puerto Vallarta Airport in three hours and 45 minutes from Atlanta, it was another short 15-minute drive to my temporary escape. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by Villa Premiere’s open-air atrium, a refreshing flute of champagne, a chilled face towel, and complimentary five-minute shoulder massage. All the Villa Premiere’s 80 rooms and suites are positioned oceanside, complete with balconies. Upon entering my suite, I was greeted by a stocked bar, a spacious room with a marble floor, 42-inch smart TV, king bed and an overall contemporary vibe accented with local art including tropical wood furnishings. Sliding back clear glass doors, the private roofed terrace had a hammock, jacuzzi, a table for two and a gorgeous view of Banderas Bay with the resort’s outdoor amenities directly below. The 24-hour personal butler expedited a delivery of my selections from both the pillow and aromatherapy menus. Villa Premiere has numerous dining options. For breakfast, I made it a routine to eat the traditional Mexican breakfast treat, chilaquiles verdes, perfectly prepared at the casual, al fresco La Ceiba oceanside. I also dove into an afternoon pizza-making workshop using their woodfire pizza oven. Then there was the elegant-casual hybrid, La Corona, a restaurant where the executive chef flexes creative muscle with gourmet dishes for dinner before it turned into a classy cocktail bar in the evening. I frequented La Perla Cantina de Costa, thanks to the large LED

televisions broadcasting sports, solid beer selection, elevated pub fare and relaxed atmosphere. The Chef’s Table staged directly over the water featured fivecourse dinners prepared in front of a minimum of six guests. A brief five-minute walk away, the city of Puerto Vallarta was loaded with attractions to explore. I spent half a day walking down the Malecon Boardwalk, lined with nightclubs, boutiques, restaurants, enlightening statues honoring the country’s history and street performers, including the captivating Papantla Flyers spiraling 130 feet in the air from ropes connected to a pole. I ended up strolling through Old Town’s cobblestone streets, lined with art galleries, markets and the iconic Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, aka la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, before heading back to the hotel. That evening, I had the pleasure of taking a sunset party boat tour to the highly lauded “Rhythms of the Night” event, consisting of an extravagant buffet dinner and outdoor stage show loaded with acrobatics, dancing and pyrotechnics. This all took place on the Las Caletas Cove, lighted solely by tiki torches. Think of an indigenous Mexican version of Cirque du Soleil taking place on a deserted island enhanced with lavish eats and drinks. It was amazing. Before leaving, I was sure to get a very necessary full-body massage at the Serena Spa to reward my morning workout sessions at the fitness center during my stay, while leaving the daily beachside yoga classes to the less flexibly challenged. Holding back tears as my taxi took me to the airport, I made a pledge this would not be the last time I treated myself to such an unforgettable vacation. The upcoming Festival De Cerveza Artisanal Brewmasters beer fest held just steps away from Villa Premiere in the fall could be the perfect excuse I need to return to that Honeymoon Suite. After reading this, wifey is guaranteed to be booking a ticket as well. PremiereOnline.com.mx JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/A L P HA R E T TA

The hotel has 160 guest rooms, featuring large flat screen televisions, free wifi, modern bathrooms and private balconies overlooking the Gulf and ground floor pool. West is Best The roar of the crowd tripled when a cowboy dripping in light blue leather charged into the ring at the West Yellowstone Rodeo. Grandstanding, he galloped clockwise around the arena, standing in his saddle, waving to rile up the folks in the stands to a fever pitch. A grinning woman holding an American flag fell in behind him, her face lighting up the night with hope and pride.

We watched the sunset from the hot tub overlooking the expansive mountain landscape, taking a daring (to us) cool plunge in the curvy pool. Honeymooners, families and friends gathered around the community fire pits, where conversation was available, but sinking into a deep Adirondack chair, staring blankly into the starry sky was perfectly acceptable. The west awaits at Montage Big Sky.

It’s rodeo season now through August, and there are four not far from Montage Big Sky, our choice for an Out West summer vacation. True to the Montage brand, which for me means impeccable service, above par dining and a menu of experiences, the resort is framed by Montana’s Spanish Peaks mountain range and located just 45 minutes from Yellowstone National Park. Offering ski-in, ski-out access in the winter, the list of hiking, horseback riding and adventuring on and near the property is long. We met up with Bailey, our adventure guide from New Zealand, who set us up for axe throwing and archery. Chucking an axe was really good therapy for my husband, as was the martini cart curated just for him, awaiting in our room later that afternoon. It’s the little things. That’s what Montage is all about.

Dubrovnik, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is a city that truly defies time. Enclosed within her ancient limestone walls, polished marble streets and baroque architecture, terracotta rooftops gleam against the backdrop of the deep blue Adriatic Sea. While the Old City’s beautifully

The most instagrammable outdoor pool in the world.

From casual cafes to Michelin Starred restaurants, Croatian cuisine blends Mediterranean flavors with local ingredients defining its rich culinary identity. preserved medieval grandeur draws adventurers from around the world; there’s a guarded elegance beyond its stone gates and the ever-watchful eye of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. Perched on the slopes, just steps from the UNESCO Old City of Dubrovnik, Hotel Excelsior was my quiet, yet luxurious sanctuary with a front-row seat to the Adriatic. From my sea-view room, I watched the morning sun spill across the walls of the ancient city and settle on Lokrum Island, just a stone’s throw away. I began my walk early in the morning as I climbed the walls high above the rooftops of the iconic Old City. The light cast a golden hue over the stone ramparts as the city slowly stirred to life. Below, narrow alleyways echoed with the quiet clatter of café conversation and shopkeepers preparing for a long, tourist filled day. From this height, Dubrovnik feels both intimate and grand, it is an architectural marvel framed by the sea and mountains.

The medieval city unfolds like a living postcard. Once a formidable stronghold, the city’s ancient walls and battlements were built to protect against invasion. Vigilant sentries once patrolled the city walls, scanning the horizon from towering lookouts. Today, those same stone paths offer breathtaking panoramic views, as visitors walk in the footsteps of soldiers long passed, immersed in the centuries of history that linger in every stone. Dubrovnik’s rooftop world is no longer just a place of defense; it’s alive with vibrant cafés and open-air restaurants. It’s a place where cannon-studded walls now frame unforgettable sunsets, and every step tells a story. After a day of wandering Dubrovnik’s cobbled streets, alleyways and rooftops, I returned to Excelsior to sink into the spa’s Steam bath, Roman bath and Finnish sauna; melting away the remainder of the day’s fatigue. A swim in the luscious indoor pool felt as if I was floating between the centuries. CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/A L P HA R E T TA

Nikoleta, my amazingly talented massage therapist, artfully swept away the last of my lingering stresses and concerns. Staying at the Excelsior wasn’t just luxurious, it was deeply grounding, a graceful pause between discovery and reflection. My next adventure would take me to Ston, a historic town located about an hour’s drive north of Dubrovnik, famed for its medieval walls and salt pans. Nestled on the Pelješac Peninsula, it’s also renowned for oyster farming in nearby Mali Ston Bay, offering visitors rich history, natural beauty and unforgettable coastal flavors. Be sure to visit Bota Šare for some of the freshest seafood and perhaps what was the best oyster I have ever eaten. Nestled in the lush Konavle Valley just outside Dubrovnik, Winery Botaro delivers a truly authentic Croatian wine experience rooted in over 600 years of family tradition. Guests are invited to sample estategrown wines and house-made delicacies like local cheeses, cured meats and traditional sweets, offering

Santa Fe’s Forever Sky ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

Both slightly intimidating and entirely charming, Santa Fe resonated with me for weeks after my visit. I walked on Pueblo land where Native American communities have thrived for centuries and whose members were the first to set foot on that very land. I felt a pull and warmth that couldn’t be explained. Most people I talked to who live in Santa Fe believe in its magnetic attraction but wonder, “do we whisper or shout about it?”

The soaring peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountains just outside Santa Fe are silhouetted against dramatic sunsets, viewed from choice spots at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado. The luxury property with 65 intimate casitas sits on 57 acres of high-desert mountain landscape that seems to soak up the noise of the world. Each casita or suite has a wood fireplace, spa-inspired bathroom and private patio for contemplation and conversation. The resort’s onsite Adventure Center offers a myriad of custom family adventures and authentic cultural excursions led by in-house, local expert guides. The signature restaurant, Terra, provides sustenance and beautiful plates with indoor and outdoor dining.

From your casita at the Four Seasons, hike or bike the resort’s own trails to a vantage point where seven different Native American communities, or Pueblos, can be mapped. The Tesuque Pueblo is nearby, and we had an excellent meal at the Tesuque Village Market. Farming, art and a rich livelihood continue on this ancestral land.

H OT SP OT | ARTS + C ULT U RE

I stared into the eyes of the 24-foot bronze sculpture, the Apache Mountain Spirit Dancer, that dominates the outdoor plaza on Museum Hill, Santa Fe’s home to four world-class museums, as well as the Santa Fe Botanical Gardens. The Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum is in John Gaw Meem’s 1930 Pueblo-Spanish Revival Director’s residence. The father of Santa Fe Style, Meem, was one of New Mexico’s most influential architects. The collection at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indianis housed in an eight-sided building, a nod to the traditional Hogan homes used by the Diné (Navajo) people. The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture is home to over 70,000 artifacts from the Native Southwest. My favorite, the Museum of International Folk Art showcases toys and textiles from more than 100 countries, representing the largest international folk art collection in the world. Browsing the cases full of miniatures and art, I was reminded we all share common bonds: family, music, work, play and home.

For a charming in town stay, the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi is steps from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Sandstone walls, impressive hand-carved doors, sculptured stairways, bright guest rooms and polished staff members make the world-class retreat remarkable. Walk to the Georgia O’Keeffe to experience an intimate view of the legendary artist’s life.

EFFICIENT

EVIDENCE BASED

We want to see you twice a week for 30 minutes. For best results, strength train less, but strength train harder.

“I was not doing any sort of physical activity regularly before coming to Discover Strength. In the few months since I have joined, I have lost weight, fat, and gained muscle. All of their exercise physiologists have been super helpful and motivating." -Molly H. 4 1/2 years ago, I was working with a personal trainer for 50 minutes, 3 times a week. I started to dread going and couldn't wait for the 50 minutes to expire. Then I heard about Discover Strength and decided to give it a shot. My 30-minute Introductory workout was way more intense than the 50-minute workout I was doing. I was slightly skeptical that 30 minutes, 2 times a week would cut it but now, 4 1/2 years later, I'm still going strong, and in the best shape of my life. What's remarkable is that I'm still improving and increasing weights on most machines after all this time." - Kurt A.
