Hello friends,
This is the perfect issue for me to do some bragging! It's our kids and pets issue, and I have both. And then some!
My husband Jim and I have three grown children, two beautiful grandchildren and three sassy cats. The newest member of the family is June Emily Sue Spearman, born June 21. Lucky for me, June and her brother Teddy (5) live just 20 minutes away. How I got this issue to the printer with all that cuteness is a miracle!
Speaking of marvels, my daughter Molly and her partner are moving to Atlanta after too many years in NYC. My son Patrick graduated from GSU in December, and is working in the film industry, living near Old Fourth Ward. How did I get so lucky to have all my kids near the roost? When we are all together, my heart swells.
The cats are Johnny, Tommy and Vito. And yes, they are gangsters, all rescues with big personalities.
I'm so very blessed to have a healthy family, humans who care deeply and are creative.
In this issue, you'll find stories about children and animals and people who are passionate about protecting and nurturing them.
At Alpharetta City Lifestyle, we're all about passion projects and giving back.
Enjoy this issue and do share your photos of the kids and pets in your life who make your heart swell. Tag us on Instagram or Facebook to share the love!
Have a great month and thank you for sharing our journey.
All my best,

WEBB BRIDGE DOG PARK IS THE NEW HOT SPOT.
KARYN SLOVIN
Poppy and her owner strike a pose in front of the new dog park.
Thanks to a generous donation from the Mulroy Family Foundation and the vision of Tim and Michele Mulroy and their rescue Golden Retriever Pebbles, Webb Bridge Dog Park features areas for large and small dogs, plenty of room for furry friends to frolic, and (of course) lots of trees. The area offers a natural aesthetic with its hardwood mulch flooring. Near the main entrance, there is a large silhouette of a dog where owners can place memorial tags for dogs who have passed, to share and preserve their memory. The Mulroy Family Foundation was founded in 2020 and is designed to give back to the local community by supporting worthy causes related to the environment, the sick, the young, and animals.

Volunteers are Purrfect
Furkids Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats, and Sadie’s Place, a no-kill shelter for rescued dogs. The Furkids team is dedicated to saving their local communities’ most at-risk animals, providing life-saving care, and then preparing them to be adopted into their forever homes. As a non-profit organization, their work would not be possible without the help of over 1,000 wonderful volunteers. Furkids is always looking for more people to get involved in their mission.
With locations throughout Metro Atlanta, there are many different ways that Furkids volunteers make a lasting impact. Volunteers play a part in every

step of the animals’ journey while in the program, from their first day in the shelter to their adoption day. Each volunteer is critical in helping heal homeless animals emotionally and physically until they are in a loving home. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, including youth volunteers.
What do Furkids volunteers actually do? A little bit of everything! Volunteers work with dogs by walking them daily, teaching them commands and good behavior, and simply getting their “zoomies” out! Keeping a sanitary environment in the shelter is also essential to maintain animal health and prevent sickness.
If you’re a cat lover - you’re in the right place! Caretakers help clean free-roam rooms and give the cats the affection they crave. There is also the Purrkids program, where volunteers work one-onone with shy or fearful cats to help their chances of adoption. Cat Shelter volunteer Rachel Clark says, “It’s evident Furkids is a safe, comfortable, and warm place for animals to land. I love my time there, and I love helping those precious babies.”
With roughly 1,100 animals in their care, Furkids couldn’t save as many lives as they do without their generous fosters. You too can help an animal in need by giving them a safe place to rest while they wait for their family. Furkids provides all the supplies needed to foster. All they need is a clean, safe, loving home!
There are plenty of volunteer opportunities outside the shelter, also. Furkids Animal Rescue has five thrift stores in metro Atlanta that provide over one-third of their operating budget.
Are you an animal lover who wants to make a difference in the lives of at-risk dogs and cats in your community?

Sue Coraggio Snape met Murphy (aka Edith Ann) while fostering dogs. “I couldn’t sleep one night and got online to look at dogs. Murphy needed a foster home and because it was 2:00 a.m., I was the first person to offer help,” she says. Sue was able to pick her up a few days later. Murphy was found on the street and had a TON of medical issues. It took three months until her heart, ears, eyes and skin issues were resolved. About 24 hours into fostering Murphy she came over and crawled on top of Sue and put her head on her neck. It’s been three years. “She’s loved us, cared for us and kept us on our toes. She is old, close to blind and pretty much deaf at this point. She is the sweetest, snuggliest, most well-behaved dog we’ve ever had in our home,” Sue says. Sue owns Leaf and Loaf - catering and personal chef services.
Basil, was part of a litter rescued from under a mobile home in North Georgia and was adopted from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter.
Chef Derek Dollar’s favorite herb is basil, so it was obvious that when he met the puppy they were meant to be together. Basil is a Chug, a Chihuahua and Pug mix. “He was just three pounds and the cutest little puppy,” Derek says. Derek is currently the executive chef and managing partner at The Mill Restaurant. He got his start in the restaurant industry at Rainwater in Alpharetta under acclaimed Atlanta chef Jay Swift. Todd Dae Kulper’s dog, Harry, is a Dalmatian mix who was adopted from a family in Southwest Georgia. His bestie is Zeus, Todd’s Ball Python, who was adopted from a snake breeder in Southeastern Atlanta. Harry likes running around and playing with people and other dogs. He loves taking car rides to visit family. Zeus enjoys watching TV and hanging out around the house and attending social events where he can interact with other people. Todd is the executive chef of Umi Modern Japanese and lives in the Alpharetta area.

GOING WITH THE GRAIN
Connecting to his viewers is key to George Charriez. He chooses figures that are easily relatable in today’s society. Body language also plays into the concept of each piece. Strong, confident stances are prevalent. He has explored different media and this month, shares his animal portraits created with pyrography. From his Blue Ridge, GA gallery, 4 Elements Art, George shares his process.
THE ART OF BURNING DESIGNS INTO WOOD HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME, TYPICALLY USING A HEATED METAL TIP. YOU ARE ONE OF THE FIRST ARTISTS TO USE AN OPEN-FLAME BLOWTORCH FOR THIS PURPOSE. BEFORE YOU BEGAN SHARING YOUR WORK ON SOCIAL MEDIA, THIS INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUE WAS VIRTUALLY UNHEARD OF. HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR UNIQUE PYROGRAPHY TECHNIQUE?
About 16 years ago, I was taking a break from painting one day and watched a documentary on America in the 1800s. The
documentary featured captivating photos from the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, and the Trail of Tears. These images were intriguing, not only for the stories they told but also for the sepia-toned, ‘burnt’ look of the photo paper. I discovered this effect was due to the natural oils on people’s fingers oxidizing with the ink and paper over time. This gave the photos a sense of history, as if the paper itself was telling a story of all the hands that had touched it over 160 years. Inspired by this, I wanted to recreate that look. While I could have used oil paint, I aimed for a more authentic, elemental aesthetic and decided to experiment with creating artwork using an open flame blowtorch.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE BLUE RIDGE AS YOUR GALLERY HOME?
I am originally from Newburgh, New York, but my family moved to Helen when I was in middle school. So, I am very familiar with the beautiful North Georgia mountains. After graduating high school, I attended Pratt

Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and spent time there studying and working as a professional artist. Years later, I relocated back to Georgia, where my wife Lauren and I made our home in Sandy Springs. We loved living there, but both of us longed to be more immersed in nature. Blue Ridge seemed like a natural fit for us with its breathtaking, inspiring beauty, convenient location, and wide variety of wonderful food and shopping.
George has been experimenting and creating art since he was a child. He attended SCAD and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY where he studied and experimented with multiple modalities which he still employs in his painting today. He worked as an illustrator and industrial designer in NY. Being involved in major campaigns and developing a great degree of proficiency in precise detailed techniques have positively informed and impacted his artistic career.
Through his intricate paintings, Charriez illustrates modern perceptions of the human condition, and he paints to inspire dialogue with his artistic commentary.
His paintings continue to be exhibited in multiple art fairs both nationally and internationally, and he has gained great attention and success over the past decades. Charriez paints every day and continues to create new imagery and explore deep ideas in his studio in Atlanta.

Some homeowners may have been skittish about the amount of work required to renovate the outdoor space at their new home. But, newlyweds Priyanka and Nick had a clear vision for their deck patio, walkways, outdoor kitchen and entire outdoor living space. Our dream was to create a place for making memories, hosting friends, and enjoying all seasons with our fur kids and future children. Archadeck, with Mark, Cinda, and their team, turned our vision

into a stunning and durable reality, making the entire process seamless. We’re thrilled with the beautiful outdoor space they’ve created for us.”
The house had an ancient, rotted, wood deck and an old concrete patio with cracks. Priyanka really wanted to create a space that would be great for her dogs, future kids and for entertaining their family. She wanted a peaceful space to enjoy a cup of coffee each morning or glass of wine in the evening.
Cinda and Mark Salazar at Archadeck Alpharetta spent hours with their clients then expanded the deck using sustainable materials that are low maintenance and will last many more years than wood. For the decking she chose Timbertech PVC decking that is cooler to the touch and very pet friendly. For the railing, she went with Timbertech Impression Rail Express aluminum railing. Low voltage lighting was added for a tranquil vibe in the evening.
For the front of the Alpharetta home, the homeowners wanted to create some curb appeal. The lot had a very large slope to the road with old, overgrown bushes. The Archadeck team removed those and built two levels of stone retaining walls adding a stone walkway for easy access from the street to the backyard. “We replaced the sidewalk from the driveway to the house with a nice stone walkway that leads to a garden and fountain area. This added a third space for relaxation and reflecting,” explains Cinda.
“This was truly a dream job and dream homeowners for us. They had a very clear vision of how they wanted to use the space and were open to suggestions we had for materials and design. It was a partnership of trust and listening for both sides, which is how we like to approach all of our projects.”

“I couldn’t have been happier with my decision to give Absolute Image Consulting a try, it has been by far my favorite place I’ve had over all my years. I find their hair systems to be top notch, the most up to date on the market, as are all the hair products that they offer. I can’t say enough good things about the company and staff.” - Client Testimonial
“My experience at Absolute Image completely changed my life. After suffering from hair loss since college, I’d also lost most of my self esteem and confidence along the way. The quality is truly astounding. They gave me my life back. They have me myself back. My only regret is not choosing this sooner and saving myself all those rough mornings in the mirror. If you’re considering hair replacement - do it.” - Client Testimonial

When our three kids were ages 7 - 13, we took them to Great Wolf Lodge (in the Midwest) and they ran amok among the three-story waterslides, lazy river and wave pool. They slept in a bunk room that looked like a tiny log cabin dropped into one end of our suite. We lost one pair of goggles, a flip-flop and a few hours of sleep, but all vowed to return. And, 20 years later, we did! This time, with a grandson in tow.
We took our grandson Teddy to the Great Wolf Lodge in La Grange and found not much has changed with the family resort chain's winning formula. You can access the water park any time after opening on your arrival day, until closing time on your departure day. There's a four-story water fort tree house, seven different slides - varying in elevation and curves, bars, ice cream, coffee, a taco bar, two sit-down restaurants, pizza and burger counters and evening activities for kids. I recommend reserving a cabana with seating, a mini fridge, towels, a TV, outlets and a bit of privacy. Not that the kids will spend much time there, but you can. Elsewhere at the resort, there's Topgolf, a climbing wall, mini golf, arcade and ropes course.
Stop in for some small-town shopping and explore historic downtown LaGrange. Charlie Joseph's serves up hotdogs and nostalgia from the c. 1920s diner. Wild Leap (with a recently opened taproom in downtown Atlanta) offers craft beer and pub food.
Long live summer!

TODD RICHARDS' CORNBREAD
School Night Side
I love this cornbread recipe and use leftovers (of which there are few) for making croutons for a Caesar salad. I met Atlanta chef Todd Richards years ago and his star continues to shine bright.
INGREDIENTS
• 2 cups (about 11 1/2 oz) plain white cornmeal (I've used yellow and it's denser)
• 2 cups (about 8 1/2 oz) all-purpose flour
• 2 cups (16 oz) buttermilk
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 8 oz (1 cup) unsalted butter, melted
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• 4 large eggs
• 1 teaspoon blended olive oil
• 1 oz (2 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 375F. Stir together the cornmeal, flour, buttermilk, sugar, melted butter, baking soda, salt and eggs in a large bowl.
2. Heat a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the oil, and tilt the skillet to spread evenly around skillet. Pour the cornbread batter into the hot skillet.
3. Bake the cornbread in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 40 minutes. Top with the softened butter.
