Hello friends,

My Aunt Sue Gay Davis (my namesake) was the epitome of Southern style. She was a school superintendent in Roanoke, VA and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. She painstakingly researched our family genealogy, tracing 13 lines back to the day our foremothers touched down on American soil.

She wore pencil skirts with crisp shirts tucked in and belted. Sensible pumps gave way to high heels for wedding receptions and parties. As a hostess, she made her guests feel important and seen. When my brother came out in the eighties, she embraced him in every way, showing compassion while she pushed herself to understand his bohemian lifestyle.

On my wedding day in 1988, she efficiently flitted around, insisting that one of the groomsmen (obviously hungover from the rehearsal shenanigans) go buy white tapers for the alter and a new pair of khakis before the ceremony.

Her recipe box was stuffed with neatly typed index cards for things like Society Punch, Hummingbird Cake, Easy Chicken Croquettes and Shout Hallelujah Potato Salad.

The pillows on her light blue damask sofa were changed out with the seasons, perfectly plumped and dimpled in an inviting way.

She and my mother (the little sister she cared for when their mother died early on) were very close and shared a love for all things tidy and a good conversation.

That's what style means to me. A well-rounded respect for beautiful things with an aptitude for efficiency and generosity.

My sister (right) wore one of Aunt Sue's cocktail dresses to my daughter's wedding in April. Along with my bestie and college roommate Nancy (left), I was surrounded by women with high style, inside and out. Enjoy this issue featuring people who make beautiful and functional design a priority.

Former San Francisco Giants player, Buster Posey and his wife Kristen at home

Former San Francisco Giants player Buster Posey, and his wife Kristen, originally from Georgia, moved to the area in 2022 with their four children to be closer to extended family following his retirement. When planning the interiors for their home, they wanted a relaxed refuge that brought in elements to pay homage to their California style. They needed a home for their family of six that was both functional and practical for their young children and out-of-town guests.

The Posey family partnered with Inman Interiors owner Lauren Wright who, along with lead designer Frances Perez, followed a four-step approach to design

and deliver a timeless California style with transitional pieces. The completed design included earth tones and soft blues with rich textures, weathered or white-washed wood furniture, and crisp white and beige walls to reflect the natural light of their home.

Understanding the family’s aesthetic is as important as choosing designs that seamlessly meet their daily needs. “We will ask a client to provide us with some inspirational photos or a Pinterest Board. While building a relationship with the client, we get to know their family, hobbies and interests to ensure our designs reflect the people that live in the space,”

says Lauren. “We can typically identify the design aesthetic they gravitate towards, including colors and textures.”

Lauren and Frances walk through the space with clients allowing them to share their favorite elements of the home and what they would like to change or keep. “This is also very helpful for our team to determine what style elements are important to them prior to designing a space,” says Lauren. As a mother of three children, she has a deep understanding of design functionality that blends with her ability to create a layered and collected space that is both warm and inviting.

The team at Inman Interiors swears by a four-phase approach. Lauren explains.

RESEARCH

Every project begins with a preliminary meeting (45-minute call) to chat about project needs, and budget, and determine if we are a good fit for one another. Then, a consultation meeting (1-hour visit to the job site) to discuss the client’s goals/needs, styles and inspiration, and any additional information. We take measurements and photos of the project and walk through our stepby-step process. Once our initial proposal is approved, contracts are signed, and the retainer is paid, we are able to turn our focus to visualizing and curating each element.

DEVELOPMENT

Next, we will begin sourcing visual inspiration and piecing together concepts. As our initial plans take form, we will create a customized presentation of finishes,

selections and design boards to help visualize the overall look and feel of the project. These selections will be entered into our system, at which point the client will have to approve the selections they would like to move forward with.

PROCUREMENT

Once the design of the home is finalized and selections are approved, we move on to sourcing. We like to partner with local makers like Ellenburg Chair Company. We have always valued their commitment to quality, custom, handmade furniture. The craftsmanship of the products goes above and beyond. I have many of the Ellenburg chairs and sofas in my own home!

INSTALLATION

This is the phase when the home finally comes to life! We schedule an installation day for our team to deliver furnishings, place them, and style them perfectly. To close out the project, we have a final walkthrough to get feedback. After we remedy any outstanding issues, we close out the project with a final meeting.

THE REAL LOOK APPROACH

Yanni McLean has mastered the art of subtle glam. As a part of her mission to instill confidence in fellow women, she opened The Real Look. The beauty studio aims to use cosmetology to enhance the natural beauty we exude instead of covering it up. Her talents and tools have only advanced since her first brick-and-mortar location grew roots in Alpharetta in 2022.

“A natural, effortless look has always been my style. I wanted my services to reflect that. I love helping my clients feel confident and beautiful,” says Yanni.

That sentiment was portrayed during my own experience at The Real Look. I dropped by Yanni’s studio at 6:00 p.m. (an hour after closing, but Yanni graciously accommodated my busy schedule) for a brow lift and lash extensions. I opted for “The Falsie Effect” lashes for a more natural look.

When I arrived, Yanni greeted me downstairs and led me to the salon, a small, peaceful space. The adjustable salon chair was the focal point of the room, with plenty of ways to situate yourself before Yanni gets to work— and trust me, comfort is a huge factor at play here since, depending on the service(s) you receive, you can spend upwards of two hours in the chair.

While holding still for so long seemed daunting, the time I spent in the chair was extremely relaxing. Plus, free snacks and drinks and the chair’s heat and massage features help make every visit one of rejuvenation. Yanni’s zen music choice even lulled me to sleep a few times as she glued my lashes on. Before I knew it, I opened my eyes and peeked at the new me in a handheld mirror.

The entire process was quick, painless and produced jaw-dropping results. My eyebrows, which have always been thin and somewhat lifeless, were thick, fluffy and even held a perfect shape on their own—no brow liner necessary! Meanwhile, my lashes looked natural yet noticeably longer and fuller. For weeks I got compliments on both features, yet I still felt completely like myself the entire time.

For me, the best part of the experience was the ease it brought to my morning routine. Yanni’s method truly accentuated the natural beauty I’d had all along. Not only could I skip out on mascara and brow liner for a few weeks, but I also found myself going makeup-free to places I wouldn’t have dared to in the past.

The Real Look offers a more extensive list of services beyond the two I

got, including brow henna (Yanni’s brow service of choice), natural makeup looks and lash lifts (similar to the brow lift, but for your lashes). Do note that all of these services require some upkeep, with touch-ups every two weeks to two months, depending on the service. Luckily, most touch-ups are significantly shorter than the initial service and can be a great way to invest in yourself and enjoy some uninterrupted me-time during a hectic week.

Kayla Johnson and Taylor Alvord at K&K Design Company dubbed this house, “Livable Elegance,” as their client wanted her home to reflect a highend family lifestyle. Whether hosting a pool party or managing the kids’ traffic after baseball practice, the homeowner wanted the house to still feel put together and inviting. With oversized black framed arched doors, Kayla continued the high contrast into some pieces of the living room while still keeping it light and fresh with bright features throughout the space.

Fall footwear from the runway

It might be September, but here in the south, warm weather has not left us yet. Warm woolens and cozy cashmere are still a few months away for our southern style sisters, but we can talk about shoes, the one thing we all need. During New York Fashion Week there were so many new options we haven’t seen in a while on the runways. Let’s take a look.

BALLET FLATS

Ballet flats are Parisian chic, but the newly updated version is straight off the runway from Italy! Slingback or full back, the flat trend is here to stay, like Prada’s white pointed-toe flats with leather flowers on the toe. Also in gray for fall.

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be. “We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
