Stayin' Alive Dance Crew

At a busy gym nearby, members are pumping iron, taking stress-relieving yoga classes and doing what it takes to keep their bodies healthy. Behind the glass windows in one studio are senior women, bedecked in workout gear, skimming across the floor to “You Should be Dancing.” This is the Stayin’ Alive Dance Crew, a group made up of spirited and spry women in their 50s, 60s and 70s. They can hip-hop, get their groove on and, yes, they are having the time of their lives. “We start off by warming up to the hits we grew up on and it brings back great memories,” says Janette Hinton, one of three co-directors of the group who leads warm-up. “We try to mix our routines with current pop hits and remixes of some oldies. The music selection is a huge part of our routines.”

And so is the dancing. Their numbers are heavy on intricate arm moves and the steps, also complex, are knitted together with precision. At first, for dancer Connie Korb, 67, the memorization was demanding. “Thank God for videos,” she says. “I practice at my home. While I am dancing, I am very focused. I listen to the music and watch the instructional videos that are provided. It also keeps my mind sharp to remember all the choreography.” The Stayin’ Alive Dance Crew, which began four years ago, rehearses twice a week and has 43 members. They are a nonprofit organization that donates their time and talent to performances all over Atlanta - giving back to the community that has given them so much over the years. Last year, they participated in all the local Halloween and holiday season events in Atlanta, including the Little Five Points Halloween parade,

Scare on the Square at Colony Square, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s New Holiday Traditions, Festival of Trees, Christmas at Piedmont, and many more. The group features cancer survivors, one living with MS, teachers, an assistant principal, a veterinarian, nurses, dance and exercise studio owners. Performances have included: senior homes, charitable events, fundraising galas, professional sporting events, dance conventions, parades, and talent competitions. There are two groups: Mega and Crew. Mega is the beginner/intermediate group and practices once a week. Crew is the intermediate/advanced group. They practice two times a week with added rehearsals if needed, with up to four performances a month. Auditions are on January 8, where ladies will learn a combination and then perform it for judges.

Nature lovers, environmentalists, thrill seekers, and luxury destination travel enthusiasts all have a place to call home in Cancún. This fifteen-mile-long sand bar separates the Caribbean Sea from the Nichupte Lagoon. On the other side of the boulevard, crystal-clear waters and perfectly white sandy beaches await to recharge the spirits of all weary travelers. Snorkeling on the vibrant coral reefs and visiting MUSA, the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art, absolutely recharges the mind, body, and soul. It is an incredible workout! If you care to go a little further out of the city, Cenotes Zapote Eco-Tour awaits. Cenotes are natural sinkholes that expose cool, refreshing groundwater that is both invigorating and spiritually refreshing at the same time. There are over 6000 cenotes on the Yucatán, each one is unique and otherworldly. Floating or frolicking in the cool waters inside the

earth is the ultimate spa experience. There are zip lines or diving platforms at most cenotes and they are well worth experiencing. While it is nice to explore the “Hotel Zone”, I did not feel like I had to leave the hotel to experience fine international dining at its best! Sacbé Beach Shack, located in the adjoining Marriott property, was beyond belief. Situated directly on the sandy beaches beneath the hotel, the “beach shack” is a whimsically designed bar and dining room offering a perfect oceanside culinary experience. The freshest local ingredients were artfully combined to create a scrumptious offering that highlights regional Mexican cuisines. The mezcal lab experience with famed Master Mezcalier, Chef Benjamín Nava Vargas, was an unexpected treat and opened a door to a delicious understanding and appreciation of small-batch mezcals. Other JW Marriott Resort and Spa culinary treasures include Hana Polynesian Grill’s themed dining room. Perfectly crafty cocktails paired wonderfully with the authentic Polynesian Islands menu. The evening’s festivities were highlighted by a completely themed costumed troupe of singers and dancers performing time-honored Polynesian fire dances. While visiting, be sure to explore Kasai Izakaya, Club 91, and Bravo, a very fresh take on modern Spanish cuisine. And, when it feels like it’s time to leave the hotel again, check out Chambao Cancún. Just think of it as an interactive curated dinner theatre experience with pop-up music, dance, fashion, and acrobatic activations staged throughout the evening. Making Salads Sing

I think it’s safe to say that most of us are not pining away for salads during the winter months. To be brutally honest, cold weather and grey skies don’t make me crave lettuce. For most of us, winter meals bring thoughts of comfort foods like shepherd’s pie, coq aux vin, and French onion soup. Never has, “it’s so cold outside. I could sure use a delicious salad to warm me up,” been heard in any household that feels the grip of winter. Salad has not traditionally brought anyone comfort during a cold winter’s night.

Remember to celebrate what you like. Whether it's roasted butternut squash, mustard greens, or croutons, go ahead and add it to your salad!

Making salads seasonal is the key to enjoying delicious greens all year round. The more exotic winter lettuces such as buttercrunch, mâche (lamb’s lettuce), and frisée are delicious, but should never replace old standards like romaine and arugula or everyone’s forever favorite salad green, spinach. Incorporate your favorite blend of winter lettuces with a choice of roasted root vegetables, pomegranate seeds, toasted pine nuts, dried fruit, late harvest oranges, beets, Brussels sprouts, and your choice of quinoa or farro, red onion or fennel. These fine ingredients combine to offer a seasoned salad for winter enjoyment. I’d even suggest a warm balsamic vinegar dressing with bacon, shallots tossed with the salad. Salads sing when there’s a chorus of different ingredients, all served at the peak of perfection, combined with a delicious dressing that marries the flavors. In winter, the peak of perfection can mean something as simple as an oven-roasted butternut squash, or a more elevated salad addition such as chevre chaud (a classic French brûléed goat’s cheese toast point). Just mixing in a

couple of warm ingredients can change the way you look at salad completely and elevate those mundane greens to the fantastic! Take a look at what’s around the produce aisle in your favorite supermarket and see what is seasonal. Cauliflower, broccoli, radish, red cabbage, and fresh parsley all make my short list of winter salad ingredients. As standalone ingredients, they are all terrific. You can coarsely chop them and mix them together with a few chickpeas and a warm lemon vinaigrette as a simple way to jazz up a chopped salad. Serve with warm roasted chicken breast or a few slices of flank steak and you have a hearty and healthy meal. Move away from the familiar and change up your ingredients. Rather than berries, try pomegranate seeds. Instead of walnuts, try pistachios or filberts. There are many varieties of radishes in most supermarkets this time of the year and I challenge you to seek out heirloom root vegetables such as golden beets or purple carrots. Jazz up your salads, and honor the season. Remember to think outside the salad box and invite new, fresh, and delicious ingredients onto your bed of lettuce.

1 cup mâche 1 cup arugula 1/4 cup feta, cubed 1/4 cup pomegranate seeds 1/4 red onion sliced 1/4 cup butternut squash cubed, roasted • olive oil and white wine vinegar • salt and cracked black pepper to taste

directions: Mix all of the ingredients and drizzle with olive oil and white wine vinegar. Add salt and cracked pepper to taste. Toss gently and serve with warm bread and butter.

Georgia native Aimee Copeland found herself fighting for her life after being diagnosed with a rare flesh-eating bacterial infection from a 2012 zip-lining accident. As the doctors did what they could to save her, they had to amputate both of her hands, one foot, and much of one leg. The road to recovery was a long one. As Aimee went through rehab, she realized that her old adventurous lifestyle had to change… or did it? New challenges made Aimee determined to find a way to still enjoy her true passion: the great outdoors. She started the Aimee Copeland Foundation, a cause that works to provide greater access to the outdoors to those with physical challenges. Recently, the foundation partnered with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to provide free, high mobility all-terrain track wheelchairs at 11 state parks, historic sites and a wildlife center. The initiative encourages those with disabilities to reconnect with nature and history, explore nature trails, go fishing and attend adaptive hunts. All-terrain track chairs are designed for use on more difficult types of terrain, to hit the trails and navigate through mud, water, sand and snow. Qualifying park visitors can experience a sense of freedom that can be difficult to have in an everyday wheelchair. All-terrain track chairs can be used for hiking, hunting, fishing and other outdoor education and recreational activities. The chairs are provided free to visitors who qualify, including those with Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, spinal cord injuries and lower limb amputations. The Alpharetta Big Peach Runners meet up, rain or shine, on the third Wednesday of every month at Jekyll Brewing. Don Hansen heads up the crew and says runners of all levels are welcome to join their group. With a built-in support network, a running club is a smart way to get your run in and strike up new friendships. Dress wisely for the cooler weather, with plenty of reflective clothing and even lights. Be safe and have a healthy new year!

ALPHARETTA CITY LIFESTYLE: WHEN DID THE CLUB START AND HOW HAS THE GROUP CHANGED OVER TIME? DON HANSEN: Big Peach Running Company has been in Alpharetta since 2010. One of the primary goals is to spread the “pedestrian active lifestyle.” There has been a run group out of the store since almost the beginning. Safety is the number one priority of the group and we don’t want to leave any runner behind, so we started a program where we would have each runner sign in and out. Every year we have a king and queen of mileage and reward those two individuals that run the most run group miles for the year. If any runner does over 200 run group miles, they get a complementary 200 mile shirt. Typically every year we have between 20-30 runners that get the shirt. Right now we are at around 150 different runners.

ACL: WHAT LEVELS OF RUNNERS RUN WITH YOU? WHAT DISTANCES DO YOU RUN? DH: We have all levels of runners. We have had runners that run with the elite team with the Atlanta Track Club, as well as beginners. What is cool about the group is that they all encourage each other. Our group has four primary routes that we run, ranging from a couple miles to a little over five miles.

ACL: DO YOU HAVE ANY SOCIAL EVENTS WITH THE CLUB? DH: Social events are a strength of the club. On special Saturdays, we go for a run and cook up a bunch of pancakes and bacon for everyone after the run. We’ve had potlucks, a Halloween run and an ugly sweater run. Manufacturers often have products or shoes they want to debut and come to the store to show them off. I see the group as a platform for the store to promote all things healthy. Most of the runners that come to group are seeking something. Some to stay in shape. Some to meet new people doing something they love. Some to find training partners to get to that next level. Whatever the intent, what I find is the best is that they all are so inclusive and supportive of each other. The fastest and the slowest. Young and old.

ACL: WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO POWER SNACKS DURING THE COLDER MONTHS? DH: I could go into a long discussion when it comes to power snacks. Everyone has their favorites. Some are minimalists and stick to some type of “Gu” product and some type of hydration. While others, ultra-marathoners for example, will include fried chicken and peanut butter and jelly. For simplicity, I guess a two-part answer here. During a run, I pretty much stick to what I use in the summer. Some type of “Gu” chomps and “Nuun” to drink. But after a run, there is nothing more satisfying than having a big stack of pancakes and bacon after a nice cold morning long run. Wash it down with a couple of cups of coffee.
