Happy holidays, friends As the holidays are fast approaching, we are gearing up for our holiday tradition of puzzling. We begin buying new puzzles that catch our eye during the year and save them up for the two weeks when my daughter, now 23, and I will clear the kitchen table and break out several new 1000-piece puzzles, usually knocking out between four and five been the holidays and New Years. Our puzzle nights consist of turning up the tunes, mostly 80s, with a good bottle of wine into the wee hours, while desperately searching for that “one” piece. Anyone who enters the house is dragged into helping out and enticed with some wine and our fabulous music, of course! My son, now 26, never understood how we could get so much enjoyment from doing the puzzles, but always joined us for a little while each year and found a few pieces while crabbing about it every time. Each year we crank through between four to six puzzles and then donate them to the senior living community where my dad used to live. Then begins the process of looking for new puzzles that look appealing to us during the year to save and start our fun tradition again the next year. I consider myself blessed to have been raised with combined holidays as a child. My father was raised Jewish and my mother was Irish Catholic. After marrying, my mother decided to convert to Judaism, but they found it important to celebrate both holidays with their five kids. Although raised Jewish, going to services at the high holidays and having a Bat Mitzvah, I adored the traditions my mother’s mother (Grams) would bring when she visited during the holidays. We had a tree, stockings going down the stairs, beautiful ornaments and I remember my mother cooking and baking every year. Often, Hanukkah would coincide with Christmas, and we would light the menorah, say our prayers, and be thankful we were a family. That’s really what my parents wanted us to remember and embrace: FAMILY. We lost our mom last year, but the memories and her recipes are still carried on. I cooked with her for years and baked my grandmother’s recipes. I’m thankful as the holidays are here that we can carry on those traditions of beautiful, decorated trees she would be proud of, lighting the menorah candles, prayers, and having our dad nearby to cook and bake just as she would have wanted. MOM’S CARROT SOUFFLÉ • 1 lb. carrots • 3 eggs • 1/3 cup white sugar • ½ cup melted butter • 2 tbsp white flour • 1 tsp baking soda • Dash nutmeg • Dash cinnamon Topping: • ½ cup cornflakes, crush them up by hand or in Cuisinart • 3 tbsp brown sugar • 2 tbsp melted butter • ¼ cup chopped walnuts Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook the carrots after peeling them (if not prepeeled) in boiling water until soft. Chop carrots in Cuisinart until in small pieces. Combine carrots and eggs in bowl, add sugar, butter, flour, baking powder, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix together and pour into 9” x 9” greased dish (I use a glass Pyrex). Make topping (my mom always adds more butter and cornflakes): Mix all ingredients for the topping. Make sure to crush up the cornflakes and chop up the walnuts. The new Roswell café, opened in partnership with Roswell United Methodist Church and located at 846 Mimosa Blvd., is the third location for Brewable. The other two locations include the Alpharetta Community Center and the lobby of Alpharetta City Hall. "This has been such a great opportunity for Brewable to expand into Roswell," said Brewable Board President Nicky Rudd. “Our mission is to provide an environment where our Brewistas can learn valuable skills and connect with others, and this new location allows us to reach even more adults with disabilities and demonstrates the value of inclusivity in our community." The sing-song greetings and choral affirmations of genuine warmth fill the air at the Four Seasons Bora Bora, along with calls from busy sea birds and melodic frogs. Hello is “ia ora na,” pronounced “yo’ rah nah,” with the accent on the first syllable, and, G, B,B A were you to score it. “Mau ru’ uru” is thank you, pronounced “mahroo-roo,” with the same melody. Men and women alike pitch their voices a bit higher, tilt their heads, and lift their eyes with every charming greeting, which begins as soon as the puddle jumper lands at the tiny Motu Mute Airport in Bora Bora. Fly to L.A., then to Tahiti (eight hours), and stay the night before the 50-minute flight over the bluest water to the French Polynesian island surrounded by atolls that host some of the world’s top hotel brands. Each sends a yacht to meet guests at the airport, for a fresh 15-minute cruise across the bay to the hotel’s dock. off your own private dock with a bright breakfast table set on your covered deck overlooking Mount Otemanu. A tomato-red tropical print tablecloth is the canvas for breakfast, delivered cheerfully in a traditional Polynesian canoe. The morning air is like silk, with a lithe breeze promising more of the same. The slow morning rush hour in the bay is on. Small quiet ferries deliver people to work, and fishing boats head out, hopeful. The lagoon is flat, ruffled by the occasional wake. I throw open the French doors from the king-bedroom suite and dive into the water, startling the neighborhood fish and rays. Later, we meander down the shady paths of the resort to the Te Mahana Spa. The pace is playful, yet peaceful. With breathtaking lagoon and Pacific Ocean views from twin infinity pools, the treatment begins with local juices and fruit, a foot massage, and then continues with rebalancing rituals starring indigenous ingredients like skin-smoothing, Tahitianblack-pearl powder and detoxifying algae sourced from the ocean. A full body scrub, massage, and hour-long soak in a coconut bath leaves us thankful and grounded. Days are spent lounging by the beachside pool, dipping into the warm clear sea, paddling across the still water and snorkeling with the resident marine biologist who helps us graft coral that will repopulate the lagoon. The Eskimos have thousands of words for snow. Here, there must be the same for blue water. Falling asleep, we left the doors open to watch the dark sky brighten with stars and a new moon. The only sounds at night are the electric carts bumping across the boardwalk, delivering night caps and sleepy guests to bungalows. The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.
